Vault Master's Collector's Corner: I Finally Completed My Vestron Video Collector's Series Blu-ray Collection!

Hey gang! It's been a busy year for yours truly, and I apologize that I sort of vanished back in February. I've been picking up a ton of overtime at work, and am otherwise occupied with trying to raise a now (almost) three-year old son, which doesn't leave much time for writing about movies, let alone watching them! While I'm hoping that this post is the start of my latest comeback, don't be too surprised if new content remains sporadic for the next, oh I don't know.... fifteen years or so?

As an avid collector of physical media I currently have two issues plaguing me: I don't have a lot of shelf space in my current residence (which I've found a temporary solution for) and I don't have the same amount of expendable income that I once did (let's face it, kids are expensive and rent isn't cheap these days). This has forced me to cut back and be a little more conservative with my purchases. And while I have long given up on on my fool's errand of trying to own the entire catalogs of boutique Blu-ray labels like Arrow Video, Scream/Shout! Factory, and Vinegar Syndrome, I recently decided to go for a far more obtainable goal as a Blu-ray hoarder: To complete my collection of Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series' releases!

To date there have been twenty-nine titles released under this label (with number thirty making its way here as of my posting this!), and up until recently I was missing half of them. While many of the later Vestron discs are very reasonably priced (everything released after MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE has been around $12), the first seventeen Blu-rays still remain in the $25 - $30 range. For that reason, I've continued to shy away from filling in those noticeable holes on my Vestron shelf.... until I received a text message from Diabolik DVD!

This alerted me to their current Vestron sale where most titles are marked down to $15.99! Seeing the opportunity to fill the remaining gaps in my collection I ended up grabbing nine Blu-rays from Diabolik! (Whoops!) Then I immediately opened up the Amazon app on my phone and searched for the remaining titles, most of which were incredibly cheap (except for GOTHIC, which is still fairly expensive), and I was done! I DID IT! I COMPLETED MY VESTRON COLLECTION SUCKAS! Oh wait.... no. No I didn't! DOH!

Shortly after my brief moment of triumph I realized that I was still missing ONE disc - #10, THE UNHOLY! Unfortunately for me, that particular title quietly went out of print! While this isn't typically a huge deal, I quickly discovered that I couldn't find a single Region A copy of the movie anywhere! (And apparently I'm not alone.)  In the end, I managed to procure a Region B copy of the UK Vestron release on eBay. Though it doesn't really fit the aesthetic of the other Vestron discs, I can now confidently say that I own the entirety of Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's series Blu-rays! WOOHOO!

I am very much looking forward to seeing what other titles Lionsgate digs up, and I really hope they keep that awesomely low price point as well! I'm not sure what else they have on the docket, but some possible future Vestron releases could include: 976-EVIL 2, BIG MAN ON CAMPUS, ALIEN WARRIOR, C.O.D., AMERICAN DRIVE-IN, DOORMAN, FEAR (1990), FUNLAND, FUTURE-KILL, DEVIL DOG: HOUND OF HELL, HIDER IN THE HOUSE, THE HUNTERS OF THE GOLDEN COBRA, JENNIFER (1978), NEON MANIACS, PAINT IT BLACK, STRANGE INVADERS, THE MANIPULATOR, THE NIGHT STALKER (1986), and/or THE POWER (1984)! And that's barely the tip of the iceberg of the hundreds of teen sex comedies, Horror flicks, and exploitation films that were released decades ago by the long defunct Vestron Video

That's all for now gang - hopefully you'll be seeing more of me around these parts in coming months! Although I'm not creating much new content these days, I'm still fairly active on social media! To see what other new titles I've added to my collection be sure to follow me on Instagram! For updates on upcoming Blu-rays, new trailers, and fun memes, be sure to follow the Vault on Facebook! Learn Who Made Who With Vestron Collector's Series' New Blu-ray of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!

LONG OUT OF PRINT, STEPHEN KING'S SOLO DIRECTORIAL EFFORT FINALLY MAKES ITS WAY TO BLU-RAY IN THIS DELUXE VESTRON RELEASE!

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE may not be the greatest thing to bear Stephen King's name, but the film does have two things going for it: It's the ONLY movie ever directed by King (who was on a steady diet of cocaine at the time) and the only film (to my knowledge) that has an all AC/DC soundtrack. For years, this bad boy was only available on VHS or DVD, but Stephen King's ridiculous tale of mankind's machines retaliating against their creators is finally getting the love it deserves!

Synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate battle of man vs. bloodthirsty machine in this terrifying Stephen King classic! For three horrifying days, the Earth passes through the tail of a mysterious comet. The skies glow an eerie green as humanity waits to see what the fallout will be. But what they imagine is nothing like the nightmare the find - the comet's magnetic fields cause all the machines on Earth to suddenly come to life and terrorize their human creators in a horrific killing spree. Now, it's up to a small group of people trapped in a desolate truck stop to defeat the killer machines - or be killed by them!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 98 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & 2.0

Though Stephen King and Emilio Estevez are noticeably absent from the special features, that is still an impressive number of new extras for this release! MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and currently seems to go for $35 - $40! (Ouch! That is super expensive - unless you've got money to burn, you may want to hold off on buying this one for a while Vault Dwellers!) Order your copy now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

The Vestron Video Collector's Series Adds GOTHIC AND CLASS OF 1999 to its Catalog on January 30th!

MARY SHELLEY GETS HIGH, AND KILLER CYBORGS MASQUERADE AS TEACHERS IN LIONSGATE'S NEWEST VESTRON TITLES!

I've been really happy with the Vestron Video Blu-ray label since they kicked things off with BLOOD DINER and CHOPPING MALL. Their latest additions are definitely making me nostalgic: I've never seen GOTHIC, but its cover sure brings back some memories of my neighborhood's old mom & pop video store.

However, I have seen CLASS OF 1999 several times. This bizarre followup to CLASS OF 1984 is cheesy in all the right ways and has an awesome end credits song (Come the Day by Midge Ure)! Though the price of these releases typically scares me away, I do look forward to adding these titles to my growing collection.

GOTHIC Synopsis: 1816. A sprawling villa in Switzerland is the setting for the night of the “Haunted Summer,” when five famous friends gather around an ancient skull to conjure up their darkest fears. Poets Lord Byron and Percy Shelley; Shelley’s fiancée, Mary Godwin; Mary’s stepsister, Claire Clairmont; and Byron’s friend, Dr. John Polidori, spend a hallucinogenic evening confronting their fears in an orgiastic frenzy of shock lunacy that later inspired Mary Shelley to write the classic FRANKENSTEIN and Dr. Polidori to pen THE VAMPYRE, which became the basis for the creation of DRACULA. One fateful evening, two legends were born, in Ken Russell’s GOTHIC.

Not Doctor Who, but an incredible simulation.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 87 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • Audio Commentary with Lisi Russell, in conversation with Film Historian Matthew Melia!
  • Isolated Score Selections and Audio Interview with Composer Thomas Dolby!
  • Interviews with Actor Julian Sands, Screenwriter Stephen Volk, and Director of Photography Mike Southon!
  • Theatrical trailer
  • TV Spot

GOTHIC comes to Blu-ray on January 30th as the 13th title in the Vestron Video Collector's Series and will run you about $25 - $30! Order yourself a copy now at AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

CLASS OF 1999 Synopsis: The time is the future, and youth gang violence is so high that the areas around some schools have become “free fire zones” into which not even the police will venture.

When Miles Langford (Malcolm McDowell), the principal of Kennedy High School, decides to take his school back from the gangs, robotics specialist Dr. Robert Forrest (Stacy Keach) provides “tactical education units.”

These human-like androids have been programmed to teach and are supplied with weapons to handle discipline problems. These kids will get a lesson in staying alive!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 99 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

I'm super glad that Stacy Keach didn't make like a banana and split during production!

Extras:
  • Audio Commentary with Producer/Director Mark L. Lester!
  • Interviews with Director/Producer Mark L. Lester and Co-Producer Eugene Mazzola!
  • Interview with Screenwriter C. Courtney Joyner!

On January 31st, Lionsgate's Vestron Collector's Series releases THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM and PARENTS on Blu-ray!

JANUARY 31ST MARKS THE BLU-RAY DEBUTS OF "THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM" AND "PARENTS," COURTESY OF LIONSGATE'S VESTRON COLLECTOR'S SERIES!

I've been a Scream Factory fan for a while now, and have just recently begun digging into Arrow Video's catalog. But Lionsgate's Vestron Blu-ray label hasn't quite caught on with yours truly just yet. It's not that I don't like the titles they are releasing (I made sure to grab CHOPPING MALL and the WAXWORK double feature as soon as they were available), but the cost of each release is well... a bit expensive.

Still, they have been doing a bang-up job on all their cult Blu-ray releases, and I look forward to playing catch-up when I get some more expendable income! And now I'll have two more cult faves (that I haven't seen!) to add to my growing list of discs that I plan on adding to my collection.

THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM
Synopsis: James D'Ampton (Hugh Grant) returns to his country castle in England. Legend has it that James' distant ancestor once slayed the local dragon- a monstrous white worm with a fondness for the sweet flesh of virgins. The young Lord dismisses the legend as folklore, until archaeology student, Angus Flint, unearths a massive reptilian skull and the ancient worship site of a pagan snake god on James' property.

When James' virtuous girlfriend, Eve (Catherine Oxenburg), suddenly disappears, he and Angus set out to investigate the foreboding cavern said to be the worm's lair where a centuries-old mystery begins to uncoil.

Lionsgate is one of the few major studios that is still keeping the Horror genre alive in theaters these days. And while I can't say I'm happy with everything they put out (I'm not), I will say that they've done us Horror fans a solid with some stellar DVD and Blu-ray releases for numerous cult titles. Because of Lionsgate, we have legit releases of long-lost faves like THE GATE, ALLIGATOR, and THE WRAITH. They've also done a stellar job on giving some major TLC to other genre classics like  EVIL DEAD 2, THE MONSTER SQUAD, and MY BLOODY VALENTINE.
