Fred Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD is one of the few films from my childhood that has held up to my adult scrutiny - honestly I think I love it more now than I did then. In fact, I just watched it the other day after putting it on for two of my visiting tween nieces. They seemed to like what they saw... in between the moments they weren't glued to their phones or fussing over their baby cousin.

And now, the ultimate companion piece to THE MONSTER SQUAD is here with the Blu-ray release of Andre Gower's WOLFMAN'S GOT NARDS, a feature-length documentary about the making of the film and it's gradual rise from a box-office flop, to a full-fledged classic with a massive fan-base! The disc seems to be bare bones, but I truly do not care and cannot wait until this upcoming Halloweekend to inject this massive dose of nostalgia into my eyeballs!

Synopsis: When it was released in 1987, THE MONSTER SQUAD was deemed a failure by critics and was, according to the box office, a film no one cared about. But over the last three decades, word of mouth has turned this sleeping hit into a cultural phenomenon.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Scream Factory just re-released PUMPKINHEAD in a beautiful new steelbook, Universal released their latest entry into the "graboid" franchise, namely TREMORS: SHRIEKER ISLAND, and the Shudder original SCARE PACKAGE just made its debut on DVD & Blu-ray!

Shout! Factory delivered two new Studio Ghibli steelbooks for PRINCESS MONONOKE and MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, Unearthed Films' delayed Blu-ray of THE UNTOLD STORY is now available, as are THE OWNERS, SPREE, and the second season of NOS4A2. And for you BACK TO THE FUTURE fans, don't forget to upgrade to the new 4K ULTIMATE TRILOGY (which is available in both a standard edition and a limited edition gift set with collectible mini-hoverboard)!

This week's big winner simply has to be Kino Lorber Studio Classics. I keep joking that Scream Factory has become the new Anchor Bay because they keep re-releasing certain titles with new packaging and/or transfers - case in point, their new steelbook of PUMPKINHEAD. Originally released by Scream Factory as a perfectly acceptable Collector's Edition back in September of 2014, this beloved creature feature has been given a noticeable video upgrade, contains all of the previous Blu-ray's special features, and comes housed in a beautifully-designed Steelbook case! Whether you already own this film on Blu-ray yet or not, you have to admit that this is definitely pretty damned enticing! Let's take a closer look, shall we?

Synopsis: When a group of teenagers inadvertently kill his only son, Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen - ALIENS) seeks the powers of a backwoods witch to bring the child back to life. But instead, she invokes "Pumpkinhead" – a monstrously clawed demon which, once reborn, answers only to Ed's bloodlust. But as the creature wreaks its slow, unspeakable tortures on the teens, Ed confronts a horrifying secret about his connection to the beast – and realizes that he must find a way to stop its deadly mission before he becomes one with the creature forever. Everyone Knows a Machine Can't Kill... Except the Machine! KILLDOZER Makes Its Big Blu-ray Debut on October 20th!

 

JERRY LONDON'S MADE-FOR-TV CULT CLASSIC GETS A NEW 2K TRANSFER AND BONUS FEATURES FROM KINO LORBER!

Well chalk up yet another film that I never thought would never get a proper Blu-ray release! Though I missed out seeing it back in 1974 (mostly because I was born in '83), I eventually saw KILLDOZER maybe a decade ago thanks to a bootleg obtained at a horror con and... it was kinda neat! And now this made-for-TV cult classic will be widely available for all to see thanks to the efforts of Kino Lorber Studio Classics!

The film has received a brand new 2K transfer (meaning it will look a thousand times better than it did when it first appeared on television in '74!) and contains some great new extras featuring director Jerry London! If you're a KILLDOZER fan, then just stop here and order a copy ASAP. But if you need a little more of a push to add this one to your collection, then read onward Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: A small construction crew battles the ultimate assassin in the cult classic KILLDOZER. Stationed on a small island off the coast of Africa, six men find themselves terrorized when a ruthless life-form takes over a bulldozer and then sets off on a killing rampage. Despite limited fuel, the renegade machine methodically hunts down the men one by one in a full-throttle drive to death. Buckle up and hold on tight in this turbo-charged thriller! Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Hey gang! Welcome to another late edition of The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT column! Work and parenthood have been seriously messing with any and all attempts to get new content up, but I'm working my way through it. And while I did miss out on posting last week's new DVD & Blu-ray releases, I just couldn't skip another week because there's a lot of awesome stuff out this past Tuesday!

Arrow Video dropped new Blu-rays of Kevin Smith's MALLRATS and the Japanese sci-fi oddity WARNING FROM SPACE, Kino Lorber Studio Classics' delivered a stellar Special Edition Blu of DEEPSTAR SIX and a new steelbook of RAWHEAD REX, and Mill Creek Entertainment brought the Jack Nicholson psychological thriller THE PLEDGE, and yet another Ultraman series to Blu-ray, namely ULTRAMAN R/B!

Kino Classics teamed with Something Weird Video for a double feature of TEST TUBE BABIES and GUILTY PARENTS, both REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and DISTRICT 9 made their 4K Ultra HD debuts, and DC/Warner Bros. finally released BATMAN: DEATH IN THE FAMILY! But it is clearly Scream Factory who won big this week Vault Dwellers!

Along with the release of TERROR IN THE AISLES and a new steelbook of MOTEL HELL (featuring a new 4K scan and cool artwork!), Scream's big claim to fame was the release of all twelve FRIDAY THE 13TH films in one huge set! While there have been problems reported, this is still a very impressive release from Scream Factory! The first four films have been remastered in 4K, there are theatrical and extended cuts of the original film, JASON GOES TO HELL, and the 2009 remake, dozens of new (and archival) audio commentaries, cast & crew interviews, behind-the-scenes featurettes, documentaries, plus a legit 3D version of Part 3!
