Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Update: Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release of QUEEN OF THE RING has been pushed back to July 14th!

Another week means another stack of new discs to add to your collections Vault Dwellers! The release slate is pretty light with Kino Lorber ruling the roost with half-a-dozen new titles (several of which are making their debuts on 4K UHD), but there's a few other discs that may be of interest to you casual collectors and diehard curators of physical media! And if there isn't, well save your money because the next two weeks are packed!

MY PICK OF THE WEEK: DEATH SHIP (4K UHD) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics! This 2-disc set boasts a new 4K restoration of the film's theatrical cut (no such love for its extended version it would seem), plus a trio of new audio commentaries from several "film historians." All of the archival bonus features from previous releases seem to be included as well!

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Mondo Macabro's new 4K UHD of BOHACHI BUSHIDO: CODE OF THE FORGOTTEN EIGHT (previously only available through their website) is here! Along with an all-new 4K restoration from an original film negative, the disc contains two audio commentaries, new and archival interviews, and a theatrical trailer! Note: The Blu-ray release of this title arrives in early July!
  • The Criterion Collection brings Monty Python's LIFE OF BRIAN to 4K for the first time ever with a new 4K restoration supervised by director Terry Gilliam! Extras on this release include two feature-length commentaries, the 2007 making-of documentary, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage (shot on 8mm), and more! Also available on Blu-ray disc!
  • Obscure label Eclectic releases a 4K-restored 8mm double feature of David Markey's DESPERATE TEENAGE LOVEDOLLS and LOVEDOLLS SUPERSTAR! Bonus features include audio commentaries, deleted scenes & alternate takes, making-of featurette, trailers, and more!
  • Kino Lorber's other major releases this week include the Billy Zane pulp hero film THE PHANTOM (new director-approved 4K restoration, new director's commentary, new interviews), REMO WILLIAMS:  THE ADVENTURE BEGINS... (new 4K restoration from original camera negative, two audio commentaries, new interview with actor Patrick Kilpatrick, and numerous archival featurettes), and UFORIA (new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, new audio commentary, and theatrical trailer)!

Scream Factory Salutes Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD with a New 4K Restoration!!!

ROMERO'S FORMERLY UNDERAPPRECIATED ZOMBIE CLASSIC GETS AN INCREDIBLE 4K RELEASE ON JUNE 16TH!

You know, it's funny: A few months ago I was lamenting that Scream Factory's best days were seemingly behind them, as they've been focusing their efforts on putting out 4K UHDs of titles that were already in their catalog. (There's also been a lot of steelbook re-releases too! Ugh!)

And then they announced a 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition of DAY OF THE DEAD, a 4K UHD of a title that was already in their catalog...... and TOTALLY REDEEMED THEMSELVES!

Somehow the long-lost original interpositive for DAY OF THE DEAD was discovered last year by Radial Entertainment's Jeff Roland, leading to one of the most highly-anticipated physical media titles of 2026! My fellow collectors, the time is nigh to make a necessary 4K upgrade! But first, let us bask in the glow of the wonderful details of this upcoming 4-disc Collector's Edition!

Synopsis: In George A. Romero's third film in the saga of the undead, a small group of scientists and soldiers take refuge in an underground missile silo as they struggle to control the flesh-eating horror that walks the Earth above. But as tensions within the base reach their breaking-point, will the final battle for the future be fought among the living or have they forever unleashed the hunger of the dead?

Widely regarded as one of the most influential horror films ever made, DAY OF THE DEAD is the triumphant conclusion to George A. Romero's landmark Dead trilogy — the series that defined the modern zombie genre and forever changed the face of horror filmmaking.

The film stars Lori Cardille as the determined scientist Dr. Sarah Bowman, alongside Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato as the menacing Captain Rhodes, Richard Liberty, Jarlath Conroy, and Sherman Howard — whose portrayal of the domesticated zombie Bub remains one of the most iconic performances in horror history. Special make-up effects by the legendary Tom Savini pushed the boundaries of practical effects and set a new standard for the genre.

Over the years I've gone back and forth on which of Romero's classic zombie films I enjoy the most: NIGHT, DAWN, or DAY?! While I'm still inclined to choose DAWN as my absolute favorite, I respect the hell out of the eerie, and highly influential 1968 original, and have really come to love the third chapter in Romero's beloved zombie series!

I'm legitimately excited for Scream Factory's upcoming 4K restoration of, what I used to (foolishly) believe, was the weakest entry in the LIVING DEAD franchise! With its wealth of extras and cool packaging, you better believe that I'm going to make certain that this Collector's Edition of DAY OF THE DEAD will be proudly displayed upon a shelf, right next to my deluxe 4K (Second Sight) release of DAWN! I just need to pre-order it ASAP!

Speaking of which.... the new DAY will dawn on Tuesday, June 16th, and it will likely cost you somewhere between $40 - $50! So be like me and pre-order this awesome set right now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, GRUV, or ORBIT DVD!

STOCK YOU VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for the Week of 04/07/26!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!
Update: Street dates are an ever-changing thing. Turns out a few titles got pushed back another week or two, so I've updated this post to reflect that. Kino Lorber's DEATH SHIP is now dropping on April 14th and Visual Vengeance's new SAURIANS Blu-ray has been pushed until April 21st!

Hey gang! In an effort to streamline things from here on out, I've decided that I'm no longer going to separately list each week's Blu-ray and 4K discs. Instead, I'll just lump them all together and make a notation if the listed titles are 4K UHDs, which will make my life just a tad easier. With that being said, let's take a quick glance at what the boutique labels have in store for us this week!

MY PICK OF THE WEEK: Film Master's 4-Film MONSTER MAYHEM COLLECTION, which features new HD restorations of MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL, FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER, GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN, and THE BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS! This two-disc set also includes multiple featurettes, plus feature-length audio commentaries for each film!

    OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

    • Scream Factory has repackaged their previous DEER HUNTER 4K release in a shiny new Steelbook. If you already own the previous Shout Select release, then there's really no need to double dip.
    • Full Moon has remastered their classic sci-fi offering MANDROID, which is making its Blu-ray debut today. Sadly the disc is pretty bare bones - extras include some trailers and "Full Moon Video Zone" featurette.
    • The surprisingly mean-spirited Horror anthology V/H/S HALLOWEEN dropped today from Shudder. Bonus features for this title include a behind-the-scenes featurette, a deleted scene, a "Diet Phantasma" Commercial, and photo gallery.
    • If you're more in the mood for low-budget, indie, and/or shot-on-video fare, be sure to peep out the new stuff from SRS Cinema and Visual Vengeance!

THE GHOST GALLEON Sets Sail on 4K UHD on April 28th, 2026!

NEW VINEGAR SYNDROME SUB-LABEL 'BIZARRO,' BRINGS THE THIRD ENTRY OF 'THE BLIND DEAD' SERIES TO 4K UHD AT THE END OF THE MONTH!

Note: I am (now) fully aware that this title was already previously released to Limited Edition 4K UHD on Vinegar Syndrome's website a ways back! This press release is for the more widely-available "standard edition."

I try really hard these days to keep up to date on all things cinema-related (particularly anything to do with physical media), but real-life responsibilities keep diverting my attention away from the hobby I love so much. Which is why up until very recently, I didn't realize that Vinegar Syndrome brought another new sub-label into its fold, namely Bizzaro

In fact these guys are so new that this Blind Dead sequel 4K disc is only their second release (their first being A CANDLE FOR THE DEVIL)! Hopefully they catch on with collectors  because more Spanish Horror on Blu-ray and/or 4K UHD is never a bad thing!

Synopsis: A publicity stunt gone horribly wrong strands two bikini-clad models in fog-shrouded waters where they encounter a ghostly galleon—the floating tomb of the undead Knights Templar, the Blind Dead. When the models vanish without a trace, a desperate rescue party boards the eerie ship only to find themselves trapped in a supernatural nightmare entwined with satanic cult rituals. Haunted by the sound-hunting, eyeless Templar corpses, the survivors must confront ancient curses and a relentless, otherworldly evil that blurs the boundaries between life and death.

Featuring a captivating cast including Jack Taylor (PIECES, COUNT DRACULA), Maria Perschy (THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK), and Bárbara Rey (THE NIGHT OF THE SORCERERS), THE GHOST GALLEON (1974) is the third chilling chapter in the cult Blind Dead saga. Written and directed by visionary Amando de Ossorio, it melds atmospheric Gothic horror with a surreal, dream-like quality and unforgettable undead mythology. Acclaimed by genre devotees for its eerie mood, and widely regarded as the most surprising film in the saga, this 4K restoration from the original camera negative brings the legendary Templar knights back to life—fully uncut and loaded with brand new and archival extras, making it essential viewing for fans of Euro-horror and supernatural terror.

    Disc Specs:
    Not Rated | 90 minutes | Color | Region A (Blu-ray) / Region Free (4K UHD)
    Resolution - 1080p (Blu-ray) & 2160p (4K UHD)
    Aspect Ratio - 1.85:1 Widescreen
    Audio - Spanish & English DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0

    Extras:

    • NEW! 4K RESTORATION FROM THE ORIGINAL CAMERA NEGATIVE!
    • Original Spanish and English dub tracks, with newly translated English subtitles!
    • NEW! A Childhood Discovery: An appreciation by Diego López-Fernández, creator of El buque maldito fanzine!
    • NEW! A New Mythology in Spanish Horror: An interview with Sitges Film Festival director Ángel Sala on Amando de Ossorio's horror career!
    • NEW! Unmasking the Templars: An interview with FX artist and film historian Antonio Garcinuño!
    • Amando de Ossorio: The Last Templar — An archival documentary featuring Amando de Ossorio, Lone Fleming, Paul Naschy, and Jack Taylor, among other key figures of Spanish horror cinema!
    • Alternate English-language titles.

The Blind Dead series occupies a weird middle ground with yours truly. I love the unique concept of the sightless, undead husks of the film's evil Knights Templar rising from the grave (and riding zombie horses no less!!!) to feast on the blood of the living. But holy hell, the often lethargic pacing and constant use of slow-motion (which seems unnecessary seeing as how the zombie knights already move as fast as molasses), coupled with the almost hypnotic (and highly atmospheric) soundtrack by Antón García Abril makes these classic horror films a real chore to sit through sometimes.

That being said, as the proud owner of Blue Underground's old DVD set of the films, I'm very much excited that (most of) the Blind Dead movies are being lovingly restored in 4K! While I'm personally holding out for a new 4K boxed set of de Ossorio's iconic films (might be a long wait since the rights seem to be all over the place at the moment), don't let that stop you from adding this disc to your collection!

Bizarro's new restoration of THE GHOST GALLEON is currently slated for an April 28th street date, and should cost you somewhere between $32 - $50. Naturally you can order a copy direct from VINEGAR SYNDROME, but it is also available from AMAZON and BULL MOOSE. (Surprisingly, there isn't a listing at DIABOLIK DVD just yet. Hmmm...)

All Hail Lord Buckethead! HYPERSPACE is Coming to Blu-ray at the End of May!

TODD DURHAM'S OBSCURE SCI-FI COMEDY COMES TO BLU-RAY DISC ON MAY 26TH IN GLORIOUS 3D!

Almost a decade ago, I read online that a political candidate named Lord Buckethead was running for office in British Parliament. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. Even more so when I discovered that a.) he had run in previous elections, gaining more votes each time, and b.) was a character from an obscure STAR WARS parody called HYPERSPACE (aka GREMLOIDS, aka GREMLORDS)!

Utilizing Cinemageddon (an invite-only torrent site that is a legit treasure trove of cinematic oddities) I managed to snag a VHS-rip of the film and I kind of fell in love with it. But after my initial viewing of HYPERSPACE, I never got around to watching it again. In fact, I had admittedly forgotten about its existence until I saw it suddenly pop up on a list of Kino Lorber's upcoming Blu-ray titles! I legit did a double-take, and got super excited! Finally, the masses would get a chance to discover this forgotten gem and, as an added bonus, experience it in legit 3-D!

I'll admit that this title is a day one purchase for yours truly, but you may not be totally convinced. So let's take a closer look at Kino's upcoming disc to help you make up your mind!

Synopsis: HYPERSPACE is an irreverent, low budget '80s sci-fi comedy written and directed fresh out of film school by Todd Durham, the creator of the blockbuster HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA franchise. In his first starring role, Chris Elliott (GROUNDHOG DAY, CABIN BOY) plays Dr. William Hopper, a cocky UFO scientist on the trail of an evil Intergalactic Space Lord, who has unknowingly landed on the wrong planet, namely Earth in the rural South, where he bewilders the locals in his frustrated, hell-bent search for stolen radio transmissions and a space princess he had been pursuing. Will he and his alien minions meet their match when confronted by Hopper, some wily country folks, and the trigger-happy U.S. National Guard? Co-starring Paula Poundstone (INSIDE OUT).

Included, also in ultra-widescreen, is Durham's horror holiday short The Fright Before Christmas. After Mom & Dad drop off the kids at their sweet Grandma's house the week before Christmas, the children begin to get the feeling that somehow this holiday vacation may be a little different from previous yuletide visits.

HYPERSPACE and THE FRIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS are presented in both stereoscopic and anaglyphic 3D formats, as well as standard 2D!

    Disc Specs:
    Not Rated | Color | 90 minutes | Region A
    Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.39:1)
    Audio - TBA

    Extras:

    • NEW! 4K RESTORATIONS BY 3-D Film Archive!
    • The Fright Before Christmas (1983, 33min)
    • The Making of Hyperspace (75 min)
    • Isolated Music Track with Commentary by Composer Don Davis & Editor Bruce Stubblefield!
    • Vintage Pre-Show
    • Hyperspace Trailer
    • The Fright Before Christmas Trailer

So not only do we get multiple ways to watch the film, but it's the director's cut (which seems to run four minutes longer), and it comes with some cool bonus features?! Hell yeah! Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release of HYPERSPACE (and THE FRIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS) will be available from retailers on Tuesday, May 26th, and should cost somewhere in the realm of $20 - $25. You can pre-order directly from KINO LORBER, and eventually from other only retailers like AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, and DIABOLIK DVD! To get some idea of what you're in for if you purchase this disc, check out the German and Russian trailers for HYPERSPACE below!

Arrow Video Has T.U.R.T.L.E. Power! - The Original TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES TRILOGY is Coming to 4K!

Artwork for Arrow Video's upcoming TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 4K TRILOGY!
ARROW VIDEO BRINGS THE LIVE-ACTION TRILOGY TO 4K UHD ON DECEMBER 16TH WITH HOURS OF NEW BONUS FEATURES!

Having just seen the 35th Anniversary limited theatrical re-release of the 1990 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, I gotta say that not only does the film still hold up remarkably well, but it looks fantastic! And you bet your shell that I'll be making the upgrade to 4K, especially since so much behind-the-scenes footage has been discovered and likely to be included in this release!

If you already own these movies on Blu-ray (like I do), you may thinking "why do I need to spend more money on something that's currently in my collection?!" Well, the easy answer is you don't. BUT if you're a fan of these films and, more importantly, the characters, you probably won't be able to help yourself once you peep out the specs & extras! Let's pop open a manhole cover and take a closer look!

Synopses: A shell-shocking saga of mutants, martial arts and New York mayhem, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy brought comic book grit, practical effects wizardry and pizza-fuelled fun to a generation of moviegoers, helping turn four sewer-dwelling brothers into global pop culture icons.

Launching in 1990 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, director Steve Barron's gritty, high-energy adaptation of the underground comic became a box office phenomenon, fusing martial arts action, streetwise humor, and the groundbreaking animatronics of Jim Henson's Creature Shop

The 1991 sequel The Secret of the Ooze is an irresistibly fun second slice: a deep-dive into the turtles' origins where new mutant foes Tokka and Rahzar are thrown in the mix... double the stakes, double the pizza!

Rounding out the trilogy, 1993's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III sends the heroes in a half shell back to feudal Japan in a time-travel adventure full of samurai showdowns, ancient legends, and comic chaos.

Restored in glorious 4K and packed with extras, this radical set celebrates the legacy of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael in one of the most iconic franchises of the era, blending innovative effects, comic-book heart, and early '90s attitude.

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 12/03/24!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!
Hey gang! My apologies for failing to post last week! Between traveling for the holidays, and a rigorous work week leading up to Thanksgiving, I unfortunately didn't have the time to share this past week's new Blu-ray & 4K releases! But now I'm back (and nearly a week late) with the newest batch of discs that you just might want to add to your collection!

The biggest "surprise" this week is that Disney's deluxe 4K steelbook releases of their most recent Marvel and STAR WARS fare (listed below). With the current glut of streaming platforms and the limited digital availability of some films and TV series, it's nice to see that "The House of Mouse" is still catering to us collectors! (Here's hoping NetFlix pays attention and follows suit at some point!)

Speaking of steelbooks, there's a LOT of them out this week: 20th Century Films' ALIEN: ROMULUS (a film that I found to be frustratingly disappointing), MPI's HATCHET COLLECTION (originally a Dark Sky Films' website exclusive - comes with a new hour-long documentary), Paramount's GALAXY QUEST (new 4K restoration, Dolby Atmos audio, & featurette) and PULP FICTION (new fancy packaging, lobby cards, and other "junk"), Universal's 20th Anniversary Edition of SHAUN OF THE DEAD (new 4K restoration, Dolby Atmos audio, & 20th anniversary featurette), and Scream Factory's (now triple-dipped) PUMPKINHEAD

Aside from a new 4K restoration made from the film's original negative, the only thing to set this release apart from the ones that came before it is its bad-ass cover art! (I've seen a lot of folks complaining about it online, but I think it looks absolutely savage!) As for extras, nothing new has been added, but at least the wealth of the bonus features from previous releases have been ported over, including: a feature-length commentary, a tribute to director Stan Winston, a five-part making-of documentary, cast & crew interviews, and more!

Other discs of note: Dark Sky Films' RIPPY (a killer zombie kangaroo epic starring Michael Biehn - available on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD), Universal's THE WILD ROBOT (a heartfelt animated feature that everyone seemed to love), Scream Factory's 4K of THE GIFT (lots of bonus features, plus Katie Holmes topless in 4K!), and Severin Films' HARD WOOD: THE ADULT FEATURES OF ED WOOD (4 feature films, some with soft and hardcore cuts) and THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES (now separate from their Ray Dennis Steckler set)!

As always, there are plenty of new releases I didn't mention so be sure to scroll down to take a peek at the full roster of new Blus & 4Ks!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 11/19/24!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Welcome! Welcome one and all to the first Stock Your Vault post since umm.... January?! Egads! Well in a (some would say a vain) attempt to get back into the swing of things, your friendly neighborhood Vault Master is here to share good tidings of new physical media releases on Blu-ray and 4K UHD! And this week is absolutely loaded with fantastic titles from all of your favorite boutique labels, so strap in and brace yourselves for pure awesome!

While there are a lot of Blu-ray and 4K titles to be excited for, I'd have to say the two most highly-anticipated ones are Toho's GODZILLA: MINUS ONE and Universal's 40th Anniversary release of THE TERMINATOR! The Oscar-winning MINUS ONE offers up a gorgeous 4K presentation with various audio tracks (including a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD English dub!), featurettes, and trailers. Even upon release day, I honestly still don't know if the bonus features have English subtitles - I guess I'll find out when I pick up a copy in the near future! Also, as of my posting this, it would seem that the Limited Edition Steelbook is completely OOP, which absolutely sucks, because it's the only way to get a copy of GODZILLA: MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR.

THE TERMINATOR comes fully restored in 4K with a DolbyVision/HDR presentation of the film, plus a Dolby Atmos audio track option! The disc includes a handful of featurettes ported over from previous releases, as well as seven deleted scenes! I've read a few reviews about this disc and it is getting rave reviews for the quality of the restoration, so I do believe it is time for me to upgrade from my old Blu-ray disc!

Other releases worth noting are: Warner Bros.' 4K of BLAZING SADDLES, Shout! Studios' fantastically expensive 4K collector's sets of THE DARK CRYSTAL and LABYRINTH, Kino Lorber's 1,000 CONVICTS AND A WOMAN (which is #20 in their Kino Cult line), Universal's SPEAK NO EVIL (which is apparently a worthy remake of the bleak original), and Arrow Video's limited editions of TOMIE (which is part of their recent love affair with J-Horror films), and A SIMPLE PLAN.

There's dozens of other new discs out today so be sure to scroll on down to see the full list fellow collectors!

GODZILLA: MINUS ONE Stomps Its Way to Blu-ray & 4K UHD on November 19th!

COMPLETE YOUR GODZILLA MOVIE COLLECTION THIS NOVEMBER WITH TAKASHI YAMAZAKI'S OSCAR-WINNING KAIJU FILM!

I've been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a kid, and I can't begin to tell you how amazed I am at the longevity that this frequent harbinger of doom/defender of Earth has enjoyed. It's hard to believe that Godzilla has been a global pop-culture icon for seventy years!!!

And though I am fairly content with the increasingly fun and crazy "Monsterverse" movies currently being cranked out by Legendary Films, you have no idea how thrilled I was to see GODZILLA: MINUS ONE on the big screen last year. I mean hell, just seeing that Toho logo come up on the screen was enough to elicit a feeling of pure joy from yours truly!

I loved MINUS ONE enough to warrant a second theatrical viewing on the big screen, and watched in awe as it raked in a shocking amount of money at the global box office, was nominated for, and won, an Academy Award, and broke records on various streaming platforms, including NetFlix! And now, after a very long wait, GODZILLA: MINUS ONE is arriving on all physical media formats this November, which is great news to fans who failed to snag the (now OOP) Limited Edition 4K/Blu-ray set that Godzilla.com's Store offered up earlier this year!

Synopsis: In the waning days of World War II, Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a surviving Kamikaze pilot, and a squad of plane engineers stationed on Odo Island, are attacked by a gargantuan monster. Years later, Shikishima teams up with a large group of military veterans to finally take down the (now nuclear-powered) monster known as Godzilla.

So I've got good news and bad news about these upcoming physical media releases Vault Dwellers. First the good news: Both the Blu-ray and 4K editions of GODZILLA: MINUS ONE seem to be identical to their Japanese counterparts (though I still have no idea if the bonus features will contain English subtitles), and as an added bonus, it appears that there is indeed an English audio dub of the film! The bad news is that if you really want to own a copy of GODZILLA: MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR, you'll need to snag the 3-Disc Limited Edition Steelbook, which as of my posting this seems to be sold out everywhere! (What?! NOOOOOOO!)

The street date for GODZILLA: MINUS ONE is (tentatively) November 19th - the Blu-ray should cost about $25, the 4K should be approximately $30 - $35, and the steelbook should price around $30 - $50! You can order the standard edition Blu-ray from AMAZON or BULL MOOSE, and the standard 2-Disc 4K UHD from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD. As for the coveted 3-Disc Limited Edition Steelbook, it is listed as sold out at Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, Deep Discount, Movies Unlimited, and Gruv. So unless Toho decides to do another run, your only choice is to overpay one of the many scalpers over at eBay.

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 01/30/24!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Hey gang! I'm back with another weekly dose of Blu-ray & 4K releases! But before I get into the good stuff, I just want to announce that Arrow Video's Limited Edition THE CONAN CHRONICLES 2-Film set has been pushed back until February 20th! However, the standalone Limited Edition releases of both CONAN THE BARBARIAN and its sequel (on both 4K & Blu-ray) are available to own right this very minute!

The final week of January 2024 was absolutely loaded with great releases from all of your favorite boutique labels - so if you are trying not to spend money on new discs, I urge you to look away now! Haha!

Severin Films kicks things into high gear with 4K releases of Frank Henenlotter's BAD BIOLOGY, NIGHTMARETHE PSYCHIC, and their multi-film DANZA MACABRA: VOLUME 2 boxed set which features CASTLE OF BLOOD, JEKYLL, THEY HAVE CHANGED THEIR FACE, and THE DEVIL'S LOVER!

Vinegar Syndrome's 4K UHDs of D.A.R.Y.L., eXistenZ, FATAL GAMES, and THE PROPHECY trilogy are now available, CUTTING CLASS arrives on 4K UHD for the first time thanks to MVD, and Deaf Crocodile's new restoration of the Czech film THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS has arrived on Blu-ray disc! And, as stated above, Arrow Video's CONAN THE BARBARIAN and CONAN THE DESTROYER are now available as well, in gorgeous limited editions!

Numerous Vinegar Syndrome partner label titles hit the mainstream today as well, including Degausser Video's REDNECK ZOMBIES (one of my all-time favorite shot-on-video gems), Umbrella Entertainment's bonkers Ozploitation classic SONS OF STEEL, AGFA's TAKE IT OUT IN TRADE and THE VIOLENT YEARS, SCRAPBOOK (from Saturn's Core), and many more! I should also mention that Eli Roth's surprisingly fun THANKSGIVING is also out on Blu-ray this week, courtesy of Sony Pictures!

As you can see, there's a lot to love this week, but (seeing as how Arrow fumbled the ball) the coveted title of "Pick of the Week" goes to Kino Lorber Studio Classics' new Special Edition of THE BOOGENS! Lovingly restored in 4K, the film gets two audio commentaries, a featurette with creature creator William Munns, multiple trailers, and reversible cover art (and slipcover)! Not too shabby for what was once a forgotten film!

As always, there are numerous titles I didn't mention, so be sure to scroll down through the list below to take in the pure majesty of this week's slate of new Blu-ray and 4K discs!

On January 30th, Journey to THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS!

DEAF CROCODILE'S NEW RESTORATION OF THE CZECH ODDITY ARRIVES ON BLU-RAY WITH SOME GREAT BONUS FEATURES!

Vinegar Syndrome's partner label Deaf Crocodile has been doing a stellar job of restoring obscure cinema from around the world (e.g. SOLOMON KING, SAMPO, et al.), and one of their latest titles is a little Czech number called THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS. Loosely based upon a Jules Verne novel, this difficult-to-categorize film has been given a great release from the fledgling boutique label. Along with the much-touted restoration, there's also a pretty good number of bonus features included on this release! Let's pull out our collective magnifying glasses and take a closer look at this one Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: A unique and almost indescribable mix of Gothic fiction, steampunk gadgetry (designed by Czech animation wizard Jan Švankmajer), slapstick comedy and romantic opera, director Oldřich Lipský's wonderfully bonkers delight has elements of THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS, Terry Gilliam, Mel Brooks and "The Benny Hill Show." Based on an 1892 Jules Verne novel The Carpathian Castle (which partially inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula), the film follows Count Teleke of Tölökö (Michal Dočolomanský) on the trail of the count's lost lover, opera singer Salsa Verde (Evelyna Steimarová) – only to discover she's been abducted by fiendish Baron Gorc of Gorceny (Miloš Kopecký), whose castle home is filled with the bizarre inventions of mad scientist Orfanik (Rudolf Hrušínský).

Littered with puns, sight gags and non-sequiturs – "Later, in Werewolfston", an invented dialect, a detached golden ear for eavesdropping, a staff topped by an enormous TV eyeball – MYSTERIOUS CASTLE was the third fantastical film from the team of director Lipský and writer Jiří Brdečka after their much-loved musical western spoof LEMONADE JOE (1966) and their detective/horror satire ADELA HAS NOT HAD SUPPER YET (1977), both major Czech cult hits. (Note that actor Miloš Kopecký and Jiří Brdečka worked on the supernatural anthology PRAGUE NIGHTS, also released by the Národní filmový archív, Deaf Crocodile, and Comeback Company.)

    Disc Specs:
    Not Rated | Color | 98 minutes | Region A
    Video - 1080p (1.37:1)
Audio - Czech LPCM 2.0 (w/ English subtitles)

    Extras:

    • NEW! Restoration of the film by Craig Rogers for Deaf Crocodile!
    • NEW! Video interview with Czech film critic and screenwriter Tereza Brdečková on her father, Jiří Brdečka, writer of MYSTERIOUS CASTLE. (In English)
    • NEW! Essay by film historian and expert on Eastern European cinema Jonathan Owen
    • NEW! Audio commentary by Tereza Brdečková and Czech film expert Irena Kovarova of Comeback Company.
    • Two eerie and stunningly beautiful Jiří Brdečka animated short films:
      • Vzducholoď a láska (Love and the Dirigible) (1948, 9 min.)
      • Třináctá komnata prince Měděnce (Prince Copperslick aka Prince Měděnec's Thirteenth Chamber) (1980, 9 min.)
    • UNIVERSUM BRDEČKA (2017, 84 min., dir. Miroslav Janek) - A feature length documentary on the life and career of filmmaker, animator, screenwriter and illustrator Jiří Brdečka, covering his childhood, his work as a screenwriter with Jiří Trnka, Karel Zeman and Oldřich Lipský, and his own acclaimed work as an animator and director. In Czech with English subtitles.

Reviews seem overly positive about the film itself (Blu-ray.com's review called it a "laugh riot"), and the restoration work done by Deaf Crocodile is reportedly top-notch, so this is looking like another win for them! For titles like this, I typically adopt a "try before you buy approach" these days (especially with the skyrocketing price boutique Blu-ray releases) but if you've been keeping pace with Deaf Crocodile up to this point, and enjoy eccentric international cinema, this will definitely be a must-own for you! THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow (January 30th!) and should cost between $21 - $30! Order a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, VINEGAR SYNDROME, or directly from DEAF CROCODILE!
