FANTASTIC PLANET (1973)

Synopsis: Rene Laloux's mesmerising sci-fi animated feature won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and is a landmark of European animation. Set in a distant world, the FANTASTIC PLANET, where tiny humans, or Oms, are kept as pets by large alien creatures, the Draags, the film travels through a strange and beautiful world. Soon, one Om absconds with a Draag knowledge device, using the tool to foment a wild Om uprising against his captors.

Inspired by the Russsian invasion of Czechoslovakia in the late '60s, Laloux's breathtaking vision immediately drew comparisons to Swift's Gulliver's Travels and PLANET OF THE APES. Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki (PRINCESS MONONOKE, SPIRITED AWAY) due to its political and social concerns, epic imagination and groundbreaking animation techniques.

After being rejected by his mother once again when all he wanted was love, he seeks vengeance and kills the family who cast him out.

The most complete version of 1925's THE LOST WORLD is now available on Blu-ray!

REDISCOVERED FOOTAGE AND AN ALL-NEW 2K TRANSFER MAKE THIS BLU-RAY THE DEFINITIVE RELEASE OF THE LOST WORLD!

Out of the handful of silent films I've sen, THE LOST WORLD is easily my favorite. It is arguably one of the most important movies in cinematic history, and for the longest time has only been available in bargain-priced public domain DVD releases that contained the abridged 63-minute cut of the film.

Then in 2012, Image Entertainment released a 93-minute "restored version" of THE LOST WORLD. Though the quality of the transfer left a little to be desired, it was amazing to see a half-hour of never before seen footage! And now, we have a whopping 110 minutes of THE LOST WORLD to gawk at, thanks to Blackhawk Films, Lobster Films, and Flicker Alley!

Synopsis: True to its title, the 1925, 10-reel version of The Lost World effectively disappeared from circulation in 1929 all known positive prints destroyed a move by First National Pictures to help clear the way for another creature film utilizing special effects and Willis O Brien's cutting-edge animation techniques: KING KONG! For more than 80 years, only abridged editions of THE LOST WORLD remained in existence... until now!

Follow Professor Challenger, played by the inimitable Wallace Beery, as he and a crew of curious explorers embark on an expedition in search of a mythical, prehistoric plateau in South America. Along for the adventure are eminent scientist Summerlee (Arthur Hoyt, the director s brother), sportsman Sir John Roxton (Lewis Stone), journalist Ed Malone (Lloyd Hughes) and Paula White (Bessie Love), whose father disappeared on the same plateau. The party is not there long before the lost world of the jungle begins to reveal its secrets: a primitive ape-man, a Pterodactyl flying through the air, a massive Brontosaurus feeding upon the trees, the vicious Allosaurus, and many more monstrous beasts of the Jurassic age.

Flicker Alley, Lobster Films, and Blackhawk Films are thrilled to present the world-premiere Blu-ray edition of Arthur Conan Doyle's THE LOST WORLD, the most complete version of the film ever released! This visually stunning 2K restoration, accomplished by Lobster Films, features newly-discovered scenes and special effect sequences, incorporating almost all original elements from archives and collections around the world. Renowned silent film composer Robert Israel contributes a new and ambitious score, performed by a full orchestra in 2016!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color (tinted) | 110 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Audio - LPCM 2.0 (Orchestrated music only.)

Extras:
  • Audio Commentary: Feature-length audio essay by Nicolas Ciccone, amateur filmmaker and film historian.
  • Deleted Scenes: Restored outtakes from a 1925 original nitrate transfer of THE LOST WORLD.
  • R.F.D., 10,000 B.C. (1917): Short film directed by Willis O'Brien for producer Thomas Edison.
  • The Ghost of Slumber Mountain (1918): Short film written and directed by Willis O'Brien in a new 2K restoration by the Dinosaur Museum.
  • Creation (1930): Unfinished film directed by Willis O'Brien that nonetheless convinced Merian C. Cooper to hire O'Brien for KING KONG.
  • Image Gallery: Featuring original production, exhibition, and promotional materials.
  • Booklet Essay: "The Lost World: Secrets of the Restoration" by Serge Bromberg of Lobster Films.
The reviews are in and this restoration of THE LOST WORLD is a definite must-have! It boasts the longest, and most complete cut of the film, a beautiful new transfer, a newly orchestrated soundtrack, and a fantastic array of extras! You can order it now from AMAZON or BULLMOOSE! The price is a bit steep, but in this case, the pricetag seems warranted!

THE ILLUSTRATED MAN and INNOCENT BLOOD are Comign to Blu-ray on September 19th!

THE WARNER ARCHIVES COLLECTION  RELEASES TWO HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER CULT TITLES TO BLU-RAY NEXT TUESDAY!

Confession time Vault Dwellers: I have never seen THE ILLUSTRATED MAN or INNOCENT BLOOD. Maybe that's not such a big shocker in regards to the 1969 anthology film based upon the works of Ray Bradbury. But as a fan of John Landis' work, I should have seen INNOCENT BLOOD at some point in time! And now I can!

THE ILLUSTRATED MAN (1969)
Synopsis: Rod Steiger plays the tattoo-covered title role in this fascinating vision of doom and danger based on the classic short story collection by futurist Ray Bradbury. Robert Drivas portrays a good-natured drifter who can't tear his eyes away from Steiger's freakish illustrations. And Claire Bloom is the mysterious seductress who created the "art" that curses its bearer – and comes to life in a nightmarish trio of tales.

Two spoiled children turn playtime into slay time (from The Veldt). Shipwrecked astronauts wander across a planet cursed by The Long Rain. And loving parents choose their children's fate when the end nears (from The Last Night of the World). Every one of THE ILLUSTRATED MAN's pictures tell a story. And every story ends in terror!

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 103 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • Vintage Featurette - Tattooed Steiger
  • Theatrical Trailer
THE ILLUSTRATED MAN will be available for purchase on Tuesday, September 19th! You can order a copy of this long out of print title now (on DVD or Blu-ray) at AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

INNOCENT BLOOD (1992)
Synopsis: This ghoul just wants to have fun! She also wants an occasional bad guy to sink her fangs into – because she never, ever takes INNOCENT BLOOD!

Anne Parillaud is Marie, a vampire who imperils Pittsburgh when she fails to kill off one of her victims, mob boss Sal Macelli (Robert Loggia). Sal realizes what a lucky stiff he is: A vampire with deadly powers! If Marie and her undercover cop boyfriend (Anthony LaPaglia) can't stop the mobster's new "family" of goons, Pittsburgh will be the pits.

As in his AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, director John Landis saw in Michael Wolk's script many "possibilities to be outrageous" – and transforms them into outrageous screen reality! With more than two minutes of never-seen-in-the-US footage, INNOCENT BLOOD is ready to drain you like never before!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 115 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • Newly remastered transfer of the film with additional footage!
  • Original Trailer
INNOCENT BLOOD makes its long-awaited Blu-ray debut on Tuesday, September 19th! Though it would have been nice to have two versions of the film on one disc (along with some interviews, featurettes, or even a director's commentary), I guess we can't complain too much, since this is the first time many of us will be seeing the longer cut of John Landis' vampire flick! You can currently order this title from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Celebrate He Who Walks Behind the Rows With Arrow Video's Special Edition Blu-ray of CHILDREN OF THE CORN!

ON OCTOBER 3RD, ARROW VIDEO GIVES "CHILDREN OF THE CORN" A MUST HAVE SPECIAL EDITION RELEASE!

CHILDREN OF THE CORN has always been one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations, and it still holds up relatively well over three decades later. (The nine followup films... haven't fared as well.) So naturally I'm pretty stoked for this Arrow release, which boasts a ton of extras, and an all new 2K transfer of the film!

Synopsis: From the mind of celebrated horror author Stephen King, the man behind such classic terror tales as The Shining, Carrie and It, comes one of his most chilling offerings yet: CHILDREN OF THE CORN.

A young couple on a road trip find themselves lost in the back roads of rural Nebraska, eventually winding up in the seemingly abandoned town of Gatlin. But the town is far from empty as the pair soon discover that it's inhabited by a twisted cult of murderous children thirsty for another blood sacrifice...

Adapted from King s eponymous short story first published in 1977 and starring Linda Hamilton (THE TERMINATOR) and Peter Horton (Thirtysomething), CHILDREN OF THE CORN has gone on to spawn one of the most enduring horror franchises of all time.

Disc Specs:

Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & DTS-HD Master Audio Mono

Synapse Films offers up a double dose of Creepers on Blu-ray!

"THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA" AND DARIO ARGENTO'S "PHENOMENA" (AKA CREEPERS) NOW AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY FROM SYNAPSE FILMS!

I haven't seen PHENOMENA in years so I'm excited for Synapse Films' 2-disc release! I am also quite curious about THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA, a new documentary about the making of THE CREEPING TERROR, which gained cult status after appearing on Mystery Science Theater 3000! Both titles are now available, so be sure to scroll down to learn about them before you add them to your personal collection!

THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA (2014)
Synopsis: A creature is haunting the streets of Los Angeles, waiting for the cover of night to stalk innocent young girls. Hungry for fame and fortune, it's fueled by a demonic rage ready to devour anyone attempting to hinder its becoming the most powerful entity in Hollywood. While sometimes called A.J. Nelson, this demon is more commonly known as Vic Savage. This is his story...

In 1964, Vic Savage made THE CREEPING TERROR with a microscopic budget verging on the non-existent. Quickly earning a reputation as the worst movie ever made, it tells of the arrival of an unconvincing alien life-form (a shambling carpet creature made of plastic tubing, wire and soap) that devours its picnicking, dancing and guitar-playing victims. Much like the infamous Ed Wood, Savage managed to pull off a variety of schemes to convince an honest producer to invest in what he promised to be "the biggest monster movie ever made."

Told through re-enactments and containing shockingly true stories of many of the actual people involved with the production, Pete Schuermann's THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA is the funny and ultimately terrifying saga of the making of THE CREEPING TERROR, and a disastrous portrait of a talentless artist who ultimately succumbs to his own self-destructive behavior.

Starring Josh Phillips in the larger-than-life performance as Vic Savage, and Jodi Lynn Thomas (AMC's PREACHER) as his unsuspecting wife Lois, THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA pays vibrant tribute to an inglorious chapter in the history of genre cinema, incidentally exposing one of the most unimaginably radical antitheses of the Hollywood dream.

Disc Specs:

PHENOMENA (1985)
Synopsis: The young Jennifer Corvino (played by Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly, in one of her first film roles) is sent to a private Swiss academy for girls where a vicious killer is on the loose, brutally murdering students. Jennifer is a gifted girl with the strange ability to communicate with insects, and Dr. McGregor (Donald Pleasence, John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN series, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK) enlists her to help locate the killer.

Jennifer finds herself in a bizarre murder plot with maggots, mutants, and razor-wielding chimpanzee mayhem! Can she uncover the killer's identity before becoming a victim herself?

Daria Nicolodi (TENEBRAE) and Fiore Argento (DEMONS) also star in this strange, unique and gory film from Italy's Master of Horror, Dario Argento. PHENOMENA also features fantastic soundtrack music from progressive-rock favorite Goblin, British Heavy Metal masters Motörhead & Iron Maiden, Andi Sex Gang, Bill Wyman and Simon Boswell!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 306 minutes (accumulated run-time of all three cuts) | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.66:1)
Audio - English 2.0 DTS-HD and Italian 2.0 DTS-HD.

Extras:
  • THREE different cuts of PHENOMENA, all available in high-definition for the first time ever in one collector's edition package!
  • Audio Commentary Track on PHENOMENA (110-minute version) from Argento scholar and author, Derek Botelho and film historian, journalist and radio/television commentator, David Del Valle!
  • DARIO ARGENTO'S WORLD OF HORROR Documentary. A fascinating look at the early films of director Dario Argento, including PHENOMENA, SUSPIRIA, DEMONS, DAWN OF THE DEAD, INFERNO and many more! Containing candid interviews and awesome behind-the-scenes footage, DARIO ARGENTO'S WORLD OF HORROR gives us a look into the mind of Italy's Master of Horror and is an essential viewing experience for all Argento fans.
  • Interview with Andi Sex Gang.
  • PHENOMENA International Theatrical Trailer.
  • CREEPERS U.S. Theatrical Trailer & Radio Spots.

THE SPELL has been cast, and A DARK SONG sung by Scream Factory!

SCREAM FACTORY GIVES HORROR FANS SOMETHING OLD AND SOMETHING NEW WITH THE ADDITION OF "A DARK SONG" AND "THE SPELL" TO THEIR MASSIVE CATALOG!

Once again, the powers that be at Scream Factory have delivered more genre films that I am totally unfamiliar with, and that's a good thing! Black magic and chubby girls with special powers await those of you brave enough to pick up either of these releases!

A DARK SONG (2016)
Synopsis: "Two broken souls. An unholy alliance." Grieving Sophia (Catherine Walker) despairs over the tragic loss of her murdered son. Desperate to somehow make contact with the boy she has lost, Sophia believes her prayers are answered when she crosses paths with the reclusive Joseph (Steve Oram, Sightseers).

An expert in the occult, Joseph reluctantly agrees to aid Sophia through a series of dark and forbidden rituals in order to bring her child back to the world of the living. Pushed to their physical and psychological breaking points, Sophia and Joseph make a disturbing descent into the most depraved corners of black magic.

The debut feature from rising horror auteur Liam Gavin, A DARK SONG sustains an air of quiet, creeping dread, tensely building towards a confrontation with evils unknown to our earthly bounds.

THE SPELL (1977)
Synopsis: "Her thoughts cast a deadly spell of terror!" 15-year-old Rita lives in an ordinary town, attends an ordinary high school and wants to lead an ordinary life … but Rita is far from an ordinary teenager. Overweight and self-conscious, Rita (Susan Myers, JAMES AT 16) is the victim of cruel teasing by many of her classmates.

Only her mother (Lee Grant, DAMIEN: OMEN II) and her gym teacher (Lelia Goldoni, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) seem to understand her. But their understanding is not enough to contain the rage that wells up within Rita. And when it does, the rage causes a supernatural power inside of her to take over.

Those who are against Rita begin to die. There seems to be no way to stop the terror once Rita has cast her spell.

This terrifying television film from 1977 also stars James Olsen (AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION), Helen Hunt (TWISTER) and was written by genre writer Brian Taggert (VISITING HOURS, POLTERGEIST III, and OMEN IV: THE AWAKENING).

Trailer Round-Up: GERALD'S GAME, HAPPY HUNTING, INSIDIOUS 4: THE LAST KEY, & THELMA.

Egads! It's been nearly a full year since our last Trailer Round-Up post! There's just been so much news pouring in daily that we haven't been able to keep up with previews for the latest genre films! So to (hopefully) get back on track, here are four new trailers for upcoming releases about kinky games gone wrong, demonic possession, psychic powers, and hunting the "most dangerous game!" Scroll down and peep 'em out Vault Dwellers!

TRAILER #1: GERALD'S GAME
Release Date: September 29, 2017 (Premiering on NetFlix!)

Carla Gugino stars in this adaptation of a Stephen King novel. A married couple goes to a secluded getaway to spice up their love life. But mere moments after being handcuffed to the bed, Gugino's hubby has a heart attack, leaving her trapped, and alone, with no way to escape. (To be honest, if I was about to do the deed with Carlo Gugino, I'd probably have a heart attack too!) Will she die of dehydration, starvation, or will she be killed and devoured by a stray dog? Find out in three more weeks!

TRAILER #2: HAPPY HUNTING
Release Date: September 22, 2017

Warren Novak (Martin Dingle Wall) is a chronic drunk that is suffering from alcohol withdrawal. When he drifts into the town of Bedford Flats, he ends up getting hunted for sport by the twisted townsfolk! As he fights to stay alive, Warren also has to keep the DTs away by ingesting any booze he can find, as the film "builds to a blood-soaked, live-or-die showdown deep in the desert!" I'm definitely keeping my eye out for this one! Scope out the trailer below and get excited gang!

TRAILER #3: INSIDIOUS 4 - THE LAST KEY
Release Date: January 5, 2018

Truth be told, I haven't watched any of the INSIDIOUS sequels, but I'm happy to see that Lin Shaye has become a central character after her appearance in the original film. The fourth installment in the franchise pits Shaye's parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier, against a presence that is haunting her family's home! To save everyone, she'll have to cross over into the spiritual realm to deal with the key-fingered tormentor once and for all. If you're a fan of the series, watch the trailer below and get excited!

TRAILER #4: THELMA
Release Date: September 17, 2017 (In Norway. U.S. release TBA.)

This artsy, romantic sci-fi tale from Norway focuses upon the titular character, who discovers that she has special powers. I'm not sure what her abilities are, or if they are supernatural in origin, but I'm pretty sure they kick in because she's experiencing a sexual awakening (puberty) and feels guilty that she is falling in love with a member of the same sex. Regardless of what the actual plot is, the movie looks interesting, and seems worth a look. Watch the trailer below to make up your own mind, then wait for it to come out... later this year perhaps?

That's it for this installment Vault Dwellers! Be sure to check back soon for more trailers, as well as updates on other upcoming genre films and Blu-ray releases!
