On Vacation - Updates shall resume on July 28th!

The Vault Master is ON VACATION!
2020 has been a rough year gang, especially for those of us who were briefly hailed as "heroes" and "essential employees." My initial vacation plans were dashed due to the continued spread of Covid-19 (no Labatt Blue, hockey, maple syrup, moose, or Mounties for this Yankee hoser), but an alternative getaway has been planned, and in less than 24 hours, I will be gone. That of course means that there will be zero new content both here and at the main site.

However, in between afternoon naps, some light binge-drinking, and tasty meals, I'm sure I'll be able to make a few brief appearances over at the Vault's Official Facebook Page. I may even fire off a few tweets on Twitter, and share a few pics on Instagram.

So until I return, please be safe Vault Dwellers! Wear masks, wash your hands, stay away from other humans, and watch lots of aquatic-themed horror flicks, Summer Camp slasher movies, and eco-horror epics featuring man-eating sharks, grizzlies, warthogs, octopi, worms, crabs, slugs, and everything in between!

Get Scream Factory's New Collector's Edition Blu-ray of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE Today!

Mark Maddox's gorgeous cover art for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE!
SCREAM FACTORY GIVES HAMMER HORROR FANS A DEFINITIVE BLU-RAY RELEASE OF DON SHARP'S CLASSIC VAMPIRE FILM!

While I already own Universal's 8-film HAMMER HORROR COLLECTION on Blu-ray (which contains KISS OF THE VAMPIRE), I have to admit that Scream Factory's Collector's Edition re-releases of the Hammer films contained in that set have become extremely tempting. With multiple bonus features, new HD transfers, and Mark Maddox's fantastic artwork on their covers, I find myself glancing at those new Hammer Blu-rays more and more frequently - it's only a matter of time before I finally cave and start adding them to my collection.

Speaking of which, Scream's new KISS OF THE VAMPIRE Blu-ray is out of this world! Featuring a new 2K scan of the film (which is featured in two different aspect ratios), new and archival extras, and an alternate TV edit of the movie, this is definitely a must-have release. I mean damn.... look at that cover art! It's just plain gorgeous!

Synopsis: Lost on the way to their honeymoon, a young couple stumbles upon a mysterious family of vampires and their unspeakably evil leader. When a wrong turn leaves newlyweds Marianne and Gerald Harcourt stranded in a remote Bavarian forest, they have no choice but to accept the hospitality of the hypnotic Dr. Ravna, distinguished lord of a nearby castle. Ravna uses his "children" to lure the newlyweds to his lair, and soon they are plunged into a nightmare of horror and deception from which there may be no escape. Their only hope is Professor Zimmer, who calls upon an ancient ritual in a desperate attempt to destroy the vampires and free Marianne from Ravna's power

While not one of my favorite Hammer titles, I still very much enjoy KISS OF THE VAMPIRE and am impressed by the amount of effort put into this release! With two cuts of the film, multiple commentaries, the TV edit, and new featurettes, I'd be more than willing to snap this up and place it proudly on the shelves with my other Scream Factory discs! KISS OF THE VAMPIRE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and should cost between $23 - $29! Get a copy right now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! And now, thanks to the efforts of Massacre Video, this long lost gem is can continue to build up a cult following!

BRACE YOURSELVES FOR THE DEFINITIVE RELEASE OF BRUCE LEE'S COMPLETE FILMOGRAPHY, CONTAINING SEVEN BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED KUNG FU CLASSICS!

And now, for the first time ever, you can own the complete collection of the films that helped propel Bruce Lee into perpetual superstardom: THE BIG BOSS (aka FISTS OF FURY), FIST OF FURY (aka THE CHINESE CONNECTION), WAY OF THE DRAGON (aka RETURN OF THE DRAGON), and ENTER THE DRAGON! This set also contains GAME OF DEATH and GAME OF DEATH II, plus hours of new and archival bonus features, including six audio commentaries, interviews, and more! Join me now fellow Bruce Lee fans, as I take a closer look at this stellar set from The Criterion Collection!

THE BIG BOSS - Criterion Blu-ray
DISC #1: THE BIG BOSS (AKA FISTS OF FURY - 1971)

Synopsis: Enter a legend. Bruce Lee’s return to the Hong Kong film industry after a decade in America proved to be his big breakthrough, launching him to superstardom and setting a new standard for kung-fu heroics. In THE BIG BOSS, he commands the screen with his gravitas and explosive physicality in the role of a Chinese immigrant working at a Thai ice factory and sworn to an oath of nonviolence.

When he discovers that the factory’s ruthless higher-ups are running a secret heroin ring and offing their own workers, his commitment to pacifism is put to the test. With his undeniable charisma and fluid, lightning-fast martial-arts style, Lee is a revelation, blazing across the screen with a speed and power the likes of which had never been seen before.

DISC #2: FIST OF FURY (AKA THE CHINESE CONNECTION - 1972)

Synopsis: Bruce Lee is at his most awe-inspiringly ferocious in this blistering follow-up to his star-making turn in THE BIG BOSS, which turned out to be an even greater success than its predecessor. Set in 1910s Shanghai, FIST OF FURY casts Lee as a martial-arts student who, after his revered master is murdered by a rival dojo of Japanese imperialists, sets out to defend the honor of both his school and the Chinese people, with his fatal fists as his weapon of choice. Elevating Lee to a hero of near folkloric proportions, this historical revenge fantasy blends its stunning action set pieces with a strong anticolonialist statement and a potent dose of the fierce cultural pride that the actor embodied.

The Criterion Collection's WAY OF THE DRAGON Blu-ray!
DISC #3: WAY OF THE DRAGON (AKA RETURN OF THE DRAGON - 1972)

Synopsis: After the back-to-back triumphs of THE BIG BOSS and FIST OF FURY, Bruce Lee was given the chance to write, produce, and direct his third outing as a martial-arts superstar. He used the opportunity to add a touch of goofily entertaining comedy to the typically action-driven proceedings in THE WAY OF THE DRAGON, which finds him playing a rigorously trained martial artist who travels from Hong Kong to Rome to help his cousin, whose restaurant is being threatened by a gang of thugs. Reaching new heights of physical virtuosity, Lee unleashes an astonishing display of nunchuck-swinging, fly-kicking mayhem, all culminating in one of his most breathtaking fights: an epic gladiatorial death match with Chuck Norris in the Roman Colosseum.

DISC #4: ENTER THE DRAGON (THEATRICAL CUT - 1973)

Synopsis: At the height of his stardom in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee was called to Hollywood to make the film that, perhaps more than any other, defines his legacy. His electrifying fighting style and the deeply personal philosophy that guided it received their fullest expression yet in this thrilling tale of a Shaolin fighter who goes undercover to infiltrate a treacherous island presided over by a renegade monk turned diabolical criminal mastermind.

Released just days after Lee’s tragic death, ENTER THE DRAGON went on to become his greatest international success and one of the most influential action movies ever made, with its famed hall-of-mirrors finale bringing together the physical and intellectual dimensions of his artistry in one dazzling set piece.

DISC #5: GAME OF DEATH (1978)

Synopsis: Released five years after Bruce Lee’s death, this eccentrically entertaining kung-fu curio combines footage from an unfinished project directed by and starring Lee with original material shot by ENTER THE DRAGON director Robert Clouse to create an entirely new work that testifies to the actor’s enduring place in the pop-culture imagination.

Using stand-ins, doubles, and archival footage to compensate for Lee’s absence, GAME OF DEATH follows a martial-arts movie star who, when he is threatened by a cutthroat crime syndicate intent on controlling his career, must take his skills from the soundstage to the streets. It all builds to an exhilarating climax that is pure Lee: a tour de force of martial-arts mastery in which the legend himself, clad in an iconic yellow jumpsuit, fights his way up a multilevel pagoda, with the towering Kareem Abdul-Jabbar among his formidable opponents.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 06/30/2020!

Egads! Between late hours at the day job, almost weekly doctor appointments (I can't believe I'll be holding a miniature version of myself in my arms in about two months), and a recent mental health weekend, I haven't had much time or energy to devote to The Vault. So here I am playing catch-up yet again with a double dose of STOCK YOUR VAULT action!

06/30/2020
On the final day of June 2020 there wasn't a whole lot to get excited for: Kino Lorber flooded retailers with multiple new titles on Blu-ray, including TEN LITTLE INDIANS, NOT FOR PUBLICATION, NARROW MARGIN, WILD PALMS, and SCENES FROM THE CLASS STRUGGLE IN BEVERLY HILLS, while our pals at Vinegar Syndrome delivered Blu-ray releases of THE IMMORTALIZER and PATTY HEARST.

MVD's Marquee Collection boasted a new Collector's Edition Blu-ray release of SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO, Shudder's TERRIFIER made its Blu-ray debut, and Frolic Features dumped a bunch of double-feature DVD sets (listed in their own section below)! For obvious reasons (mainly out of my love for the recently deceased Ennio Morricone) Scream Factory's Blu-ray of ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE was my pick of the week!

To see the full list of June 30th's roster of DVDs & Blu-rays (plus THIS week's far better list of new releases), be sure to scroll on down!

ORCA Finally Gets Its North American Blu-ray Debut Thanks to Scream Factory!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE!
PREPARE TO BE TRAUMATIZED ALL OVER AGAIN WHEN YOU REVISIT ONE OF CINEMA'S GREATEST REVENGE TALES!

ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE is often lumped in with the slew of films that followed in JAWS' wake, and unfairly so because it has more in common with DEATH WISH than it does with Spielberg's eternal classic. ORCA has previously been released on (Region Free) Blu-ray by Umbrella Entertainment (read my review of that release HERE), so I'm guessing that this Scream Factory disc is basically a carbon copy as the only thing missing is the short 5-minute chat with Martha De Laurentiis. If you've been pining to revisit the dreaded "Orcabortion" scene in HD, well now is certainly the time to upgrade Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Sleek, intelligent, beautiful ... and hell-bent on revenge. Producer Dino De Laurentiis (KING KONG, RAGTIME) and director Michael Anderson (AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, LOGAN'S RUN) join forces to present the rousing action-adventure tale of ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE. It's the story of one powerful being against another: a strong, determined fisherman by the name of Captain Nolan (Richard Harris - UNFORGIVEN) versus an equally determined killer whale.

When the giant whale's pregnant mate is maimed and killed by Nolan, the whale seeks vengeance: smashing boats, attacking a seacoast village, and eventually luring his human adversaries to a final confrontation in the marine creature's own arctic turf. Charlotte Rampling, Will Sampson, and Bo Derek (in her feature film debut) also star in this seafaring epic brimming with nail-biting suspense and spectacular special effects!

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 82 minutes | Region A
