Vault Master's Collector's Corner: My Small CAMP ARROW VIDEO PART II Sale Haul!

Vault Master's Collector's Corner Logo

After taking advantage at various sales from Kino Lorber, Shout! Factory, Severin Films, Vinegar Syndrome, and Amazon, I declared that I was absolutely 100% DONE collecting Blu-rays for a while. And then Arrow Video unleashed their second annual CAMP ARROW VIDEO PART II sale... Hundreds of Arrow titles have been reduced in price at their UK shop, and also over at Zavvi (which is doing a Buy One Get One deal on many discs as well!), Diabolik DVD, and Grindhouse Video! The sale ends on July 26th, so take advantage fellow collectors!

Despite spending an exorbitant amount of money throughout June, I broke down and snagged seven titles from Arrow's website (many of which were Region Free), including: BLOOD TIDE, THE CHILL FACTOR, ONE CUT OF THE DEAD (HOLLYWOOD EDITION), SCARED STIFF, THE SLAYER, TREMORS (standard edition 4K UHD), and WHITE FIRE!

I shared a few photos of my latest Arrow acquisitions over on my Instagram feed - you can view them below!

I saw BLOOD TIDE many years ago after I purchased a bargain-bin DVD of the film which featured a heavily-edited cut that looked like it was mastered from a VHS tape. Now this mostly forgotten creature feature has been lovingly restored in 4K and comes complete with a new director's commentary and interview with Writer/Producer Nico Mastorakis! Joy!

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD recently became a favorite of mine after I saw it on Shudder. If you managed to survive the first half-hour (power through it - trust me!), you'll be treated to an oft-hilarious movie that is full of heart. This release comes with a spin-off film (ONE CUT OF THE DEAD IN HOLLYWOOD) plus a variety of bonus features not found on the standard releases!

TREMORS is a perennial favorite and easily one of the best monster movies ever made! I couldn't help myself and made the (some would argue) necessary upgrade to the new 4K release, which boasts absolutely gorgeous picture and sound, plus an impressive number of newly created special features!

As for the rest, I have never seen THE CHILL FACTOR (2K restoration, new commentary and interviews, VHS workprint, et al.), SCARED STIFF (2K restoration, new audio commentary and making-of documentary, et al.), THE SLAYER (new 4K restoration, audio commentary, isolated score, making-of documentary, et al.), or WHITE FIRE (new audio commentary, new cast & crew interviews, et al.) Just from the description on the back of these discs I'm certain that I am in for quite a ride!

To see what else I've added to my ever-growing movie collection, be sure to scope out my Instagram! To keep up to date on new and upcoming genre titles on Blu-ray and 4K UHD, definitely be sure to follow The Vault on Facebook and Twitter as well!

Until next time Vault Dwellers, continue bulking up your collections to help keep physical media alive in an increasingly digital world!

Wanted on Blu-ray: DEADLY FRIEND

Rated R | Color | 91 minutes
My memories are a bit fuzzy when it comes to Wes Craven's DEADLY FRIEND, but I remember catching it on cable when I was fairly young. I recall sneaking downstairs to the living room late at night to watch something on the "big TV," but I'm not sure if this film was the reason for that. Regardless, I was excited to be watching DEADLY FRIEND because at that time I was a fledgling Horror fan that had discovered various other Craven films including SWAMP THING, THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS, and SHOCKER. (Thank you TNT's MonsterVision!)

Looking back, I didn't find DEADLY FRIEND particularly scary, but I do recollect being absolutely floored when Anne Ramsey's head exploded during the film's notorious "death by basketball" scene, and becoming smitten with Kristy Swanson. Oddly enough, my most vivid memory of watching this movie for the first (and now that I think of it, last) time was my reaction at the end: I wept. In retrospect I'm not really sure why, but I guess it was because I thought it was really sad that the lead character lost everyone close to him despite his best intentions? Maybe? I don't exactly know.

What I do know is that we are nearing the 35th anniversary of DEADLY FRIEND's theatrical release (October 10th) and Wes Craven's troubled production still has yet to make the leap to Blu-ray disc! But I have a strong feeling that will change sooner rather than later, seeing as how this title has garnered a decent cult following over the past three decades. And with all of the boutique labels raiding studio vaults these days, it's only a matter of time before DEADLY FRIEND finally gets an upgrade!

Synopsis: Based upon Diana Henstell's novel Friend, DEADLY FRIEND focuses on teenage science whiz Paul Conway (Little House on the Prairie's Matthew Labyorteaux). He and his mother (and his overprotective robotic creation B.B.) move to a new neighborhood, where he befriends the pretty girl next door, Samantha Pringle (Kristy Swanson). The two teens rapidly become close, until a series of unfortunate events occur: B.B. is gunned down by Elvira, the cranky/crazy basketball-stealing old woman that lives across the street (portrayed by Mama Fratelli herself, Anne Ramsey) and Samantha is thrown down a flight of stairs by her abusive father.

Matthew Labyorteaux and B.B. the $20,000 robotic marvel!
A young Michael Bay brainstorms on future film projects with his pal Bumblebee.

Unable to deal with losing the girl he loves, Paul swipes Samantha's comatose body from the hospital (before she's taken off of life support) and installs B.B.'s microchip into her brain. This somehow resuscitates Samantha, who acts oddly robotic (because B.B. is apparently in the driver's seat) and is eager to dole out some punishment to those that have wronged her. After murdering Poppa Pringle (Harry Marcus) exploding Elvira's skull with a basketball, and tossing a bully to his death, Paul's cyborg construct begins showing signs of regaining her humanity. But it's too little too late, and this dark love story builds to tragic end for both of its main characters.
Availability: After bombing at the box office, DEADLY FRIEND came to VHS in January of 1994 where it started to build a following. After VHS died off, the film would then be released to DVD in September of 2007, then in a 4-Film set with SOMEONE'S WATCHING ME!, EYES OF A STRANGER, and THE HAND in 2012. There was also a reissued standalone DVD release in 2020. The movie is also available to stream instantly on Amazon Prime Video. There's also a region free Spanish Blu-ray that may or may not be a bootleg.

Current Rights Holder: Warner Bros., so there is a slight chance that DEADLY FRIEND could become part of the Warner Archive Collection at some point! However, if I was a betting man I'd put my money on Scream Factory, seeing as how they've released SOMEONE'S WATCHING ME!, EYES OF A STRANGER, and THE HAND on Blu-ray already. Fingers crossed!

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • Two cuts of the film: The theatrical version and a "director's cut" that removes the gory moments and restores the deleted scenes and the original ending.
  • A new 2K or 4K transfer of the film!
  • Original mono audio plus (maybe) a newly created 5.1 surround mix.
  • New audio commentary featuring cast and crew, OR a "film historian" like Troy Howarth or Lee Gambin!
  • A new Making-of Featurette or Documentary chronicling DEADLY FRIEND's bumpy path from page to screen, OR some new cast & crew interviews with screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, stars Kirsty Swanson and Matthew Labyorteaux, and/or special f/x artists Peter Albiez and Lance Anderson.
  • Archival interviews with director Wes Craven.
  • Deleted & Extended scenes
  • BD-ROM content: The original novel of Friend that the film is based on.
  • Poster & Stills gallery
  • Theatrical trailer

Kristy Swanson newly back from the dead in DEADLY FRIEND.
Makeup around eyes = killer cyborg.
DEADLY FRIEND was Wes Craven's first studio film, and he shot it during a particularly rough patch in his life: His marriage was ending, he was booted from directing both BEETLEJUICE and SUPERMAN IV (in retrospect, the latter wasn't such a bad thing), and became embroiled in a baseless lawsuit. Even with all that going on in his life, Wes so badly wanted to direct a non-Horror film which is why he leaped at the chance to bring FRIEND (formerly ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, A.I., and eventually DEADLY FRIEND) to the big screen.

But his original vision never had a chance. Wes added a gory nightmare-sequence to the film at the behest of producers, which got great reactions during a test screening. After that, Wes was told to add more blood and guts to the film, and to replace his ending with one that was conceived by Mark Canton, the then President of Warner Bros. Then, after committing to upping the film's body count, Craven had to battle his old nemesis the MPAA, which saddled DEADLY FRIEND with an X-rating until numerous cuts were made. (Yeesh.... what an absolute nightmare the entire ordeal must have been for Wes.)

Back in April 2014, fans of the film started a petition at Change.org (which has sadly only garnered 100 signatures) in an attempt to convince Warner Bros. to release a director's cut. Needless to say, it didn't do the trick. So here's my plea to the powers that be at the WB (and Scream Factory... perhaps?): Please breathe new life into this film! Delivering a director's cut is likely a tall order, so even if you just do a high-def restoration of the theatrical cut with some decent bonus features, I think fans will be somewhat sated. And if you won't do it for the people who adore it, then at least do it to honor the memory of Wes Craven and let his spirit rest a bit more easily. The ball's in your court Warner Bros.

For a more in-depth look what went on behind the scenes during the making of DEADLY FRIEND, I highly recommend the following video from JoBlo.com:

No One Is Coming To Save You: CENTIGRADE Now Available on DVD & Blu-ray from Scream Factory!

Cover art for Scream Factory's new Blu-ray of CENTIGRADE!

Loosely based upon multiple accounts of people being trapped in their vehicles by snow, CENTIGRADE attempts to do for vacationing in Norway what Adam Green's FROZEN did for skiing. Shot in sequence inside an ice cream freezer with two half-starved leads, director Brendan Walsh wanted this film to feel as realistic as possible. But did his efforts create a good film? The only way to know for sure is to pick up a Blu-ray (or DVD) copy of CENTIGRADE now that it is currently available to occupy that teensy bit of empty space in your ever-growing Scream Factory collection!

Synopsis: Inspired by real events, this harrowing film follows a young American couple, Matt and Naomi, as they travel through the Arctic mountains of Norway. After pulling over during a snowstorm, they wake up trapped in their SUV, buried underneath layers of snow and ice. As if the stakes aren't high enough for the pair, Naomi is eight months pregnant as they contemplate how to escape their frozen prison.

With few resources, a dwindling food supply, and nothing but time, the couple endure mounting tension, blame, and personal secrets bubbling to the surface. Matt and Naomi realize they must work together to survive in a crippling battle against the elements, hypothermia, disturbing hallucinations, and plunging temperatures reaching far below zero. Will they make it out of this alive?

Rated PG-13 | Color | 88 minutes

While many of you reading this were introduced to Andrew Dice Clay through his stand up (gotta love those dirty nursery rhymes), or perhaps his lead role in THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE (which earned him a Razzy Award for Worst Actor!), my first brush with "the Diceman" was in the mid-90s when I caught BRAIN SMASHER... A LOVE STORY late one night on Cinemax.

Suffice it to say, I was looking for ahm.... other entertainment on that particular cable channel that fateful night, but what I found turned out to be so much better! In BRAIN SMASHER, Andrew Dice Clay is a nightclub bouncer who ends up battling ("We are NOT") ninjas to rescue a beautiful model  and stop a martial arts madman from becoming (possibly) immortal! Directed by Albert Pyun (ARCADE, CAPTAIN AMERICA), this fun little romantic Action-Comedy quickly became a personal favorite in my early teenage years, but just as quickly vanished once the VHS-era came to a close.

We're now heading towards the 30th anniversary of this low-budget gem, and it still hasn't had a DVD release here in the United States (though it did briefly pop up on NetFlix around 2012), and doesn't seem to be high on anyone's list for a Blu-ray debut. So once again I find myself fighting the good fight and taking up the cause for a movie that deserves more love!

Synopsis: An adventurous botanist discovers a rare (and legendary) red lotus flower and mails it off to her supermodel sister Samantha Crain (Teri Hatcher), in Portland, Oregon. Hot on the trail of said lotus (whose petals can allegedly imbue anyone who eats them with special powers.... or immortality... or... something...) is a clan of murderous Shaolin monks (in Kato masks) who can catch bullets with their bare hands and hate being called ninjas!

"For the one millionth time: We are NOT Ninjas!"
With the monks hot on her heels, Samantha runs for her life and into Ed Malloy (Andrew Dice Clay), a nightclub bouncer dubbed The Brain Smasher. Not one to ignore a pretty face, the trash-talking, wise-cracking Ed is dragged into the chase and uses his innate ability to brutally knock people out to protect the beautiful Samantha. As Ed and Sam flee from the tenacious villains, they start to develop feelings for one another. Will their blossoming love survive the kung fu onslaught of the power hungry murder monks?! The only way to find out is to watch BRAIN SMASHER.... A LOVE STORY... if you can find a copy that is.

Availability: This movie has been out of print in the U.S. since it's (straight to) VHS release in the late-1990s. While is has received DVD releases in Australia and the UK, BRAIN SMASHER has never enjoyed a wide release. If you want to check out this film, you can order a DVD-R from VHSPS.COM for $15 or watch a VHS-rip on YouTube HERE.

Current Rights Holder: This may be an easy one to figure out Vault Dwellers - follow me down this little rabbit hole, won't you? BRAIN SMASHER was released by Vidmark Entertainment, a company that was created in 1984 to distribute films internationally. In 1988, they started producing their own movies, starting with the unexpectedly profitable DEMONWARP, and would eventually (by 1991) change over to Trimark Entertainment, which later merged with Lionsgate less than a decade later. Therefore.... unless Albert Pyun somehow got the rights to the film, BRAIN SMASHER is still with Lionsgate. So if you really want this movie on Blu-ray, you know who to bother first!

Teri Hatcher as Samantha Crain in BRAIN SMASHER... A LOVE STORY!
And for those of you still wondering... "they're real and they're spectacular!"

Blu-ray Wishlist:

  • A new 2K (or 4K) transfer made from the original camera negatives.
  • Multiple audio options (i.e. Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1)
  • Director's commentary with Albert Pyun! Would be cool to have Andrew Dice Clay sit in on this as well!
  • Interviews with cast & crew: Primarily Andrew Dice Clay, Teri Hatcher, Albert Pyun, Tim Thomerson, Yuji Okumoto, and maybe one or two of the film's many stunt coordinators.
  • Making-of-Featurette
  • Theatrical trailer & VHS Promos

BRAIN SMASHER... A LOVE STORY is a time capsule from the portion of my life when I was making that awkward transition from child to teenager, and was one of the numerous cult gems I discovered as my love of cinema grew with me. While it certainly isn't some long-forgotten classic that the world has unjustly ignored, Albert Pyun's little direct-to-video production is a lot of fun and deserves to be seen by more people - it's on the cusp of being a cult classic I tell ya! So if I've ignited your curiosity, or dredged up fond memories of this film, then please spread the word around and maybe, just maybe, we can convince the powers that be at (I'm assuming) Lionsgate to give BRAIN SMASHER a new shot at finding its audience!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 02/16/2021!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 02/16/2021 is Image Entertainment's ARCHENEMY!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors and welcome to another edition of the News Vault's weekly STOCK YOUR VAULT! I'm know I'm super llate in posting this (sorry!) but hey, better late than never right? This past week was a bit light on new titles but as is typically the case, there are some definite gems you may want to add to your growing collections!

Full Moon Pictures brought THE HAND THAT FEEDS THE DEAD to DVD & Blu-ray, Image Entertainment gave RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE its physical media debut, and HBO dropped season one of LOVECRAFT COUNTRY on DVD & Blu-ray disc!

Well Go USA's lone release this past week was THE SWORDSMAN, Lionsgate released FEAR OF RAIN and THE VERY EXCELLENT MR. DUNDEE (the latter should be a real treat for all you Paul Hogan fans out there), Paramount debuted GOOD BURGER on Blu-ray disc, and Kino Lorber once again makes a show of force with the largest number of Blu-ray releases, including JETSONS: THE MOVIE, THE UNDERNEATH, THE UNSEEN (distributed on behalf of Scorpion Releasing), and SLITHIS (in conjunction with Code Red)!

Honestly, there wasn't really a big/important Blu-ray release this week, so I had a tough time choosing my "pick of the week." I settled on Image Entertainment's new Blu of ARCHENEMY starring Joe Manganiello because it sounds interesting, and because Joe recently liked a tweet of mine when I promoted the film a week or two ago. (Thanks Joe - you rock!)

There are some titles I haven't yet mentioned (like the new Limited Edition "Titans of Cult" 4K Steelbook of PACIFIC RIM) - to peep them all out just continue scrolling down! You might find a few things you want but I'd personally suggest saving your money because much more worthwhile releases are on the horizon!

Vault Master's Collector's Corner: Just Added the HAMMER 20-FILM ULTIMATE COLLECTION to My Blu-ray Shelves!

Welcome back to Vault Master's Collector's Corner gang! Today I just wanted to share one of the newest additions to my collection with ya'll - Mill Creek Entertainment's awesome 20-film Collection of Hammer flicks! This 10-disc Blu-ray set offers up a little bit of everything from classic Hammer Horror (e.g. THE GORGON, CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB) to swashbuckling adventures (e.g. THE PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER, SWORD OF SHERWOOD FOREST), and comes with a 12-page booklet, multiple audio commentaries, and several featurettes & retrospectives! Peep out a few pictures of it below from my Instagram feed!

The following films are included in the collection.
Note: Titles with a * next to them have audio commentaries.

  • THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1963) *
  • THE GORGON (1964) *
  • THE SNORKEL (1958) *
  • MANIAC (1963)
  • DIE! DIE! MY DARLING (1965)
  • SCREAM OF FEAR (1961) *
  • CASH ON DEMAND (1961)

Deep Discount mistakenly placed this Blu-ray set on sale for $20 (and at one point even less) a while back and didn't honor the price for most of their customers. (Many of us got an apology and a $5 coupon code.) However, I lucked out because I found the set marked for $30 on Amazon through Deep Discount days later - this time the order went through! Currently, the cheapest you can find Mill Creek's 20-Film HAMMER ULTIMATE COLLECTION is $45.99 - snag a copy now from AMAZON or BEST BUY or wallow in regret!

That's it for the moment Vault Dwellers, but stay tuned for more new content and be sure to follow The Vault on Facebook and/or Twitter to keep up to date on sales, limited time offers, and great deals on Blu-ray and 4K discs!

Now on Blu-ray: An Unspeakable Terror, Hidden in Darkness Awaits You in THE UNSEEN!

Blu-ray Cover for Scorpion Releasing/Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of THE UNSEEN!

Before directing SAVAGE STREETS featuring Linda Blair, and the fourth FRIDAY THE 13TH sequel, Danny Steinmann cut his teeth as a Horror director with 1980's THE UNSEEN. I never even knew this film existed until three years ago, when I saw it in 35mm during one of Exhumed Films' 24-Hour Horrorthons. And though I haven't seen it since I would gladly give it another look, so I'm stoked that it is once again readily available on Blu-ray disc! Never heard of it? Well then keep reading Vault Dwellers to see if this might become a new addition to your Blu-ray collection!

Synopsis: A TV reporter (Barbara Bach - THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE) and two friends head to Solvang, California, to cover a Danish festival. When a mix-up at the hotel leaves them stranded without rooms, the girls accept the invitation of a friendly museum owner to board at his farmhouse. But what the women don’t know is that something is living in the basement – something unspeakable. Their stay soon becomes a horrific nightmare when they encounter THE UNSEEN!

The film stars Stephen Furst (NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE, MIDNIGHT MADNESS), Sydney Lassick (CARRIE, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST), Lelia Goldoni (FACES, BLOOD BROTHERS), Douglas Barr (TV’s The Fall Guy, DEADLY BLESSING), and Karen Lamm (TRACKDOWN). Herbert R. Steinmann (DAWN OF THE DEAD) presents this original story by makeup legends Stan Winston (PUMPKINHEAD) & Thomas R. Burman. Co-written by Kim Henkel (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) and directed by Danny Steinmann, witness the horror with a brand new 2K scan of the original negatives!

Code Red Respawns SLITHIS on Blu-ray Disc!

Blu-ray cover for Code Red's SLITHIS!

SLITHIS (aka SPAWN OF THE SLITHIS) came across my radar decades ago when, you guessed it, I found a copy at a local video store! While it didn't quite blow me away back then, I admit that I enjoyed it a helluva lot more when I saw it in 35mm with a crowd at a pre-Covid film festival! (Sigh... those were the days...)

After decades of being forgotten, SLITHIS debuted on DVD in 2010, and finally arrived on Blu-ray disc 2017, when it was released as a limited edition title with a really cool slipcover! But now, four years later, the amphibious creature born of radioactive sludge has returned to occupy a spot in your movie collection! If you're a fan of films featuring men in rubbery monster suits then you'll definitely want to pick this one up Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Finally, nature unleashes its revenge! From the pollution of our nuclear waste came the killer we cannot destroy. Our worst nightmares come to life with the terrifying, scaly monster – SLITHIS! First this nuclear mutant killed household pets near the canals of Venice, California. Now it preys on old couples and a homeless rotund man sleeping in the public men’s room! In the tradition of JAWS, two outcasts, a teacher and a Jamaican sea-hunter, will take on the horrific monster to stop the slaughter! This mud monster creature is something out of those 50’s classics we love!

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 86 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

  • 2017 2K Scan of the Original Camera Negatives!
  • Theatrical Trailer
Code Red's Blu-ray re-release of SLITHIS should cost between $18 - $23 and is currently available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold! Get yourself a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or RONIN FLIX!

Note: The film is Rated PG, but I distinctly remember there being some brief female nudity, particularly when the creature attacks a horny couple on a boat. I mention this to not only give you more incentive to own SLITHIS, but to also give those of you with kids a heads up!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 02/09/2021!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 02/09/2021 is Scream Factory's Steelbook of MY BLOODY VALENTINE!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!
Yowza! It's been a few months but the Vault Master is back on the scene with the first STOCK YOUR VAULT post of 2021! As I continue to learn the ins and outs of parenthood and work a full-time job as a "essential worker" during a global pandemic, I'm hopefully going to find a little more time to devote myself to creating new content here and at the main site. It'll be a while until I get back to a regular update schedule (if there ever was such a thing for yours truly), but I'm eager and energized to get back to work! Speaking of....

This week is chock full of cool titles from a variety of your favorite Blu-ray labels gang! Full Moon Pictures released BEACH BABES FROM BEYOND (a staple of the olde Skinemax era) and TOURIST TRAP (this time allegedly UNCUT) to Blu-ray disc, Arrow Video's lone release is THE EL DUCE TAPES, and Well Go USA released the action-packed JIANG ZIYA to both DVD & Blu-ray!

Kino Lorber Studio Classics is a force to be reckoned with these days and has multiple new releases out this week, including WINGS OF THE HAWK (in 3D!), MAN OF THE EAST (starring Terrence Hill), THE HILLS RUN RED, SO EVIL MY LOVE, and THE SUSPECT! Also out this week are Troma's HONOR KILLING, re-releases of Code Red's Blu-rays of DEVIL'S EXPRESS and the DEVIL TIMES FIVE, Dark Force Entertainment's BLUE MONKEY (aka INSECT) and double feature of THE BLACK DRAGON and ENFORCER FROM DEATH ROW, and VCI's flagship luchadore Blu-ray release, SANTO IN THE TREASURE OF DRACULA (the "Sexy Vampire Version" - remastered in 4K!).

Even with all that good stuff, I'm giving my "pick of the week" to Scream Factory. Along with their DVD & Blu-ray release of SPUTNIK, they've just dropped a nice shiny Limited Edition Steelbook of the slasher classic MY BLOODY VALENTINE! While it is just a fancy repackaging of the previous Collector's Edition of George Mihalka's Canadian fright flick, I dig the new artwork. Plus I'm giving extra bonus points because they took the time to release it just before Valentine's Day - I love when a company makes a small effort like that!

There are plenty of other new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs out this week - to see the full roster just continue scrolling Vault Dwellers!

Vault Master's Collector's Corner: The 2-Disc Solution - You Don't Have to Ditch Those DVDs After You Upgrade to Blu-ray!

 Vault Master's COLLECTOR'S CORNER Logo!

Hiya Vault Dwellers! After a long (and sort of unintended) hiatus, your friendly neighborhood Vault Master has returned with an all new column here at the News Vault! While I fully intend to get back to weekly Stock Your Vault posts, and plan to rejuvenate our fallow Wanted on Blu-ray column (as well as write up some new reviews, lists, and articles at the main site), I've decided to add a new segment to the News Vault archives that focuses on showcasing my newest physical media acquisitions, as well as discussing how I maintain and present my ever-growing collection!

To kick things off, I would like to share a little trick I picked up years ago concerning my extra DVD copies of films that I've since upgraded to Blu-ray or 4K disc. I know lots of people either give their old DVDs away, or sell/trade them in for a few bucks, or even toss them in the trash, but I typically don't. Why? Well for several reasons:

  • Sometimes the DVD actually has more bonus features than the Blu-ray release (e.g. JACK BROOKS: MONSTER SLAYER) which boggles my mind. If you're a person that is all about the extras, you may feel compelled to keep two copies of a movie on your shelf, just so you can enjoy an audio commentary or making-of featurette that wasn't ported over to the Blu-ray/4K release.
  • If you're the type of person that (foolishly) lets other people borrow your movies, the DVD is great to have in case you lend out a film to someone who hasn't bothered upgrading to high-definition just yet. (i.e. Your parents or grandparents.)
  • If you happen to run a website and want to include screen captures from the film to flesh out reviews or articles, you cannot take "screen grabs" from a Blu-ray disc! (Literally. They are designed that way.) While there are ways around this, it is just plain easier to pop in the DVD to acquire any desired screencaps.

So let's say you fall into one of those very specific categories and decide to keep both your DVD and newly acquired Blu-ray - what should you do with your DVD? Space is a luxury that many of us collectors do not have: Our shelves fill up quickly and having two copies of the same film is kind of hard to justify. While I have seen some collectors toss out cases and stash their discs in a giant CD binder (blasphemous but great for saving space!) I believe my solution to this issue will be far more attractive to those of you who prefer to display your cinematic treasures.

Two-Disc Blu-ray Case

Yep. That's it. A 2-Disc Blu-ray case! They can be easily obtained online (buy some HERE from Amazon) and can be purchased one-at-a-time or in various increments (e.g. ten, twenty-five, or even a nice even hundred!) All you have to do is pop both discs into one of these bad boys, slip in the Blu-ray cover art and you will have successfully created your very own two-disc Special Edition release!

I've been doing this for over six years to save space, make certain that I have ALL of the special features possible, and obtain screencaps for my reviews. The only downside is that I'm stuck with a pile of empty DVD & Blu-ray cases, as well as a stack of DVD cover art. While it is good to have spare cases on hand (sometimes a movie's trip from the warehouse to my mailbox is a rough one), I have absolutely no idea what to do with the leftover DVD slipcases. They are currently stored in a small binder under my desk because I can't bring myself to throw them out, so if any of you reading this can think of something cool to do with them, I am all ears!

To wrap things up: If you want to donate, sell, or trash your old DVDs that's perfectly fine - don't let me tell you how to run your life (or your collection). But if the mere thought of doing so pains you, you've got the "2-Disc Solution" to fall back on! Thanks for reading Vault Dwellers and be sure to stay tuned for more new content as I try to get things back on track here at the News Vault!
