SCREAM FACTORY GIVES ROGER CORMAN'S CULT CLASSIC THE LOVE IT TRULY DESERVES WITH THEIR NEW BLU-RAY DISC!
Though I've owned THE WASP WOMAN for decades (it's on one of the many bargain-bin DVD sets I've procured over the years) I've never actually sat down and watched it. That may be about to change now that Scream Factory has unleashed their new Blu-ray of the film that contains TWO versions of THE WASP WOMAN, plus new extras!
Synopsis: Roger Corman, king of the cult classics produced and directed this cult classic, and even makes an uncredited appearance as a doctor in the film. Susan Cabot (SORORITY GIRL) plays Janice Starlin, whose cosmetic company has started to lose sales because its marketing relies on her own once-impressive but now aging beauty.
The eccentric Dr. Eric Zinthrop (Michael Mark) develops an enzyme extract from royal wasp jelly, which rejuvenates Janice, with one tiny little side effect: It turns her into a monster! Written by frequent Corman collaborator Leo Gordon (THE TERROR, THE TOWER OF LONDON), this chiller co-stars Anthony Eisley (THE NAKED KISS) and Barboura Morris (A BUCKET OF BLOOD).

NICOLAS CAGE SEEKS BLOODY RETRIBUTION IN THE NEWEST FEATURE FILM FROM PANOS COSMATOS!
While I didn't love it as much as other folks did, I will say that MANDY is definitely worth a look. It has a dreamlike quality to it, is frequently atmospheric, and a definite step up from the director's previous effort, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW! MANDY has already garnered a devoted cult following after its limited theatrical run and Video on Demand release, and is sure to gain more fans now that it is out on Blu-ray disc!
Synopsis: Pacific Northwest. 1983 AD. Outsiders Red Miller and Mandy Bloom lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand, Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.
The film was directed by visionary filmmaker Panos Cosmatos (BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW) and co-written with first-time screenwriter Aaron Stewart-Ahn. Mandy features the final score of the late renowned Oscar-nominated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (SICARIO, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING).

STUDENTS FROM DR. HERBERT WEST'S ALMA MATER ARE ATTACKED BY A DEMON IN THIS OFT-OVERLOOKED H.P. LOVECRAFT HORROR TALE!
I recall seeing THE UNNAMABLE when it came out on VHS back in the day, but I barely remember much about it. (Other than the strange fixation/crush I had on Alyda Winthrop, the film's murderous antagonist from Hell.) I haven't revisited THE UNNAMABLE since then, but when I do, I'm going to make sure I watch Unearthed Films Special Edition Blu-ray!
Synopsis: College students from Miskatonic University who retreat to an early
18th-century mansion for a weekend of lust are stalked by a fatalistic
female in this horror film taken from a story by H.P. Lovecraft. The
demon delights in tearing the limbs off her human victims to carry out a
centuries-old family curse. Bloody graphic violence and nudity is
combined with some campy comedy.

LONG OUT OF PRINT, STEPHEN KING'S SOLO DIRECTORIAL EFFORT FINALLY MAKES ITS WAY TO BLU-RAY IN THIS DELUXE VESTRON RELEASE!
MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE may not be the greatest thing to bear Stephen King's name, but the film does have two things going for it: It's the ONLY movie ever directed by King (who was on a steady diet of cocaine at the time) and the only film (to my knowledge) that has an all AC/DC soundtrack. For years, this bad boy was only available on VHS or DVD, but Stephen King's ridiculous tale of mankind's machines retaliating against their creators is finally getting the love it deserves!
Synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate battle of man vs. bloodthirsty machine in this terrifying Stephen King classic! For three horrifying days, the Earth passes through the tail of a mysterious comet. The skies glow an eerie green as humanity waits to see what the fallout will be. But what they imagine is nothing like the nightmare the find - the comet's magnetic fields cause all the machines on Earth to suddenly come to life and terrorize their human creators in a horrific killing spree. Now, it's up to a small group of people trapped in a desolate truck stop to defeat the killer machines - or be killed by them!

Though Stephen King and Emilio Estevez are noticeably absent from the special features, that is still an impressive number of new extras for this release! MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and currently seems to go for $35 - $40! (Ouch! ONE OF THE GREATEST HORROR ANTHOLOGIES OF ALL TIME GETS GETS AN IMPRESSIVE BLU-RAY RELEASE!
When I heard the news of this release my first reaction was bittersweet Vault Dwellers, because all I could think was "Man, Jimmy Harris would've went wild for this!" My pal, the late Doc Terror, adored CREEPSHOW - it was his favorite Horror movie. So I for one will be picking up this new Scream Factory Blu-ray, not just because I enjoy the movie on its own merits, but also because I want to feel some sort of connection to a good friend that was taken from us all far too soon.
Let's take a closer look at this beast of a Blu-ray, shall we?
Synopsis: Five creepy tales are strung together by a framing story involving a young boy being punished by his father for reading the gruesome, titular comic book. "Father's Day" tells the tale of a family patriarch exacting beyond-the-grave revenge on the daughter who murdered him. In "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill," a Maine hayseed is overtaken by a meteor-based plant growth. A cuckolded husband exacts watery revenge on his cheating wife and her lover in "Something to Tide You Over." A hairy beast in a box is used for nefarious purposes at a university in "The Crate." Finally, in "They're Creeping Up on You," a wealthy, arrogant New Yorker with a fear of germs has a disturbing run-in with cockroaches during a blackout.

UNCORK'D ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES A NEW VIGILANTE ACTION FLICK WITH AN EERILY FAMILIAR LEAD ACTOR!
When I first saw the trailer for DEATH KISS, I thought I was bearing witness to some sort of amazingly effective digital trickery. However, the truth is even crazier because the lead star, Robert Kovacs, is a dead ringer for the late (and very great) Charles Bronson! Regardless of the quality of the movie, I want to see it just because it contains a Bronson-clone!
Synopsis: A vigilante with a mysterious past goes to a crime-infested city and
takes the law into his own hands, at the same time protecting a young
mother and her child.
Written and directed by Rene Perez (PLAYING WITH DOLLS: HAVOC), and filmed in Northern California, DEATH KISS stars Robert Kovacs (who has gained attention for his uncanny resemblance to a certain well-known action star), Daniel Baldwin (JOHN CARPENTER’S VAMPIRES), Richard Tyson (KINDERGARTEN COP, TWO MOON JUNCTION), Eva Hamilton (horror fest fave RUIN ME), Stormi Maya, Leia Perez, Reese Austyn, and Sam Story.
Stills & Trailer: (Click on images to enlarge them.)
DEATH KISS is now available to stream instantly at AMAZON and various other On Demand services. It will get a DVD release on December 4th, which will include a trailer, director's commentary, and possibly more supplemental material. To keep tabs on all things DEATH KISS, visit the film's Official Facebook Page! For more info on this film and future Uncork'd Entertainment titles, go HERE.

TWO HAMMER HORROR CLASSICS COME TO BLU-RAY JUST IN TIME FOR THE HALLOWEEN SEASON!
UPDATE (10/16/2018): THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA has been pushed back until November 13th!
It's been a long time since I've laid eyes upon THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA so I can't really comment on that film. However, DRACULA A.D. 1972 is fresher in my mind, and while it's not one of my fave Hammer titles, it's still a pretty solid movie. Though it sort of peaks with the duel between Dracula and Van Helsing at the beginning of the film, there's plenty of eye candy (e.g. Caroline Munro!) to keep your interest in this one!
DRACULA A.D. 1972 (1972)
Synopsis: London’s become a small town for a handful of jaded psychedelic-era hipsters. But Johnny Alucard has a groovy new way for his pals to get their kicks. A certain ritual will be the living end, he insists. And if you still wonder where Johnny’s coming from, try spelling his last name backwards. Dracula is raised into the modern era in this Hammer Studios shocker that’s “quite well done” (John Stanley, Creature Features).
Christopher Lee dons the cape for the sixth time and seeks out fresh victims. As archnemesis Van Helsing, fellow horror legend Peter Cushing clutches a vial of holy water and edges within throwing distance. Their harrowing battle royale is not to be missed. In fact, it’s the living end!

While I'm happy to see this film get an all new transfer, I'm disappointed in the lack of extras (Yeesh, not even a trailer?), even more so because this disc is going for $19 - $22! While I'd suggest waiting for a price drop, if you simply must add this Hammer title to your collection, you can order it now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!
THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA (1973)
Synopsis: A dying man’s report of a ritual black mass stirs Britain’s security
chief into action, and a mansion filled with young vampire girls is soon
discovered. And this is but the first twist in a labyrinth of horror.
Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee pair up for the final Hammer Dracula
in this follow-up to Dracula A.D. 1972.
In this go-round, the Count
(Christopher Lee, naturally) follows a more pulpish, super-villainous
playbook, posing as a millionaire industrialist alive and well and
living in London while secretly brewing up a batch of super-plague in a
quest to destroy the world.
Mixing Satanists, spies and sci-fi, the film
makes viewers glad that Peter Cushing is on hand to solidly anchor the
more outré elements as the effortlessly expositioning Dr. Van Helsing.
Lee, in turn, has more dialogue as Dracula than was the norm, and
ratchets up the evil to the nth degree. Joanna Lumley (Absolutely
Fabulous) costars. Also known as COUNT DRACULA AND HIS VAMPIRE BRIDE.

ARROW VIDEO GIVES TERRY GILLIAM'S SCI-FI CLASSIC A NEW COLLECTOR'S EDITION BLU-RAY!
UPDATE (10/10/2018): The street date for this title has been pushed back until October 30th!
While I have enjoyed many of Terry Gilliam's films (including MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, JABBERWOCKY, and THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN) I must admit that I've failed to see 12 MONKEYS since its release back in 1995. It's definitely on my "list" (i.e. an ever-expanding index of films I need to watch), but the opportunity to sit down and watch it has never presented itself. Now it looks like I'll have to remedy that now that Arrow's given this film some much-needed TLC.
Synopsis: Following the commercial and critical success of THE FISHER KING, Terry
Gilliam's next feature would turn to science fiction and a screenplay by
Janet and David Peoples (BLADE RUNNER, UNFORGIVEN) inspired by Chris
Marker's classic short film La Jetée.
In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the
"Army of the Twelve Monkeys," destroying much of the world's population
and forcing survivors underground.
In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce
Willis - DIE HARD) is chosen to go back in time and help scientists in
their search for a cure.
Featuring an Oscar-nominated turn by Brad Pitt (FIGHT CLUB) as mental
patient Jeffrey Goines, 12 MONKEYS would become Gilliam's most
successful film and is now widely regarded as a sci-fi classic.

UPCOMING INDIE HORROR SPOOF REPLACES MICHAEL MYERS WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!
I recently received a bit o' press about Richard Lowly's PRESIDENT EVIL, a parody of John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN. The big twist here is that the killer is disguised as President Donald J. Trump, and wields a butcher knife emblazoned with the stars and stripes!
Film Synopsis: Days before the November mid-term Elections, three young girls who are a Muslim, Mexican, and Haitian, are stalked by a deranged killer dressed as the POTUS. PRESIDENT EVIL stars Jose Rosete (The Walking Dead:Red Machete), Christian Hutcherson (Dark), and Johanna Rae (PSYCHOS) and was directed by Richard Lowly (APOCALYPSE RISING), who co-wrote the film with Gregory P. Wolk.

PRESIDENT EVIL does not yet have a poster or release date, so stay tuned for updates as I receive more information about this upcoming film! In the meantime, be sure to visit the Official Facebook page and website for behind-the-scenes photos and more!
CENOBITES, HAUNTED HOUSES, AND POST-APOCALYPTIC LANDSCAPES AWAIT YOU IN UMBRELLA'S NEW OCTOBER RELEASES!
Yowza! North American labels have been bombarding us with tons of new titles this month already, and our friends in Australia are upping the ante as well! This month, Umbrella brings the first three HELLRAISER films to Blu-ray (as if you didn't own them in some format already), and gives NEXT OF KIN a deluxe release under their Ozploitation Classics line with a new 4K transfer, and loads of extras!
Umbrella's Beyond Genres label continues to shine with their latest addition of THE QUIET EARTH, which has just received a new HD restoration, and newer genre fare comes to DVD, including OUIJA HOUSE and LOST GULLY ROAD. To find out more about the titles I've just mentioned, and to see the list of Umbrella's other new October titles, continue onward!
* Also due out on November 11th is Umbrella's Ultimate Edition of George A. Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD. Though I already own the Anchor Bay and Scream Factory releases of this title, I have to admit that the Umbrella release is pretty tempting. I'm guessing this release uses the same audio and video from previous Blu-ray releases, and is loaded with special features!
* Umbrella has announced a handful of their December titles, but the one that stands out for me is FROG DREAMING, which has been described as a GOONIES-style children's adventure film, about a pair of kids that go on a journey to seek a legendary aquatic creature.
THE ADVENTURES OF BARRY MCKENZIE (1972)
Synopsis: Reviled by the critics! Adored by fair-dinkum Aussies! In this fan-bloody-tastic classic, Australia's favourite wild colonial boy, Barry McKenzie, journeys to the old country accompanied by his Aunt Edna Everage to take a Captain Cook and further his cultural and intellectual education.
Faster than a rat up a drainpipe, Bazza heads for Earls Court to catch up with a bonzer bunch of ex-pat bastards - and from there rampages through London, cracking tubes, parking the tiger, pointing percy, flashing the nasty, and handing out knuckle-sandwiches to the unsuspecting Poms - who wouldn't even know a tram was up 'em 'till the bell rang!
Barry Humphries, Barry Cocker, Spike Milligan and Peter Cook star in this groundbreaking flick that captured Bazza's celebrated yawn in glorious technicolor and put the Oz fillum industry on the map!

Synopsis: Scientist Zac Hobson (a powerhouse performance by Bruno Lawrence of Frontline) awakens to discover that he may be the last man on earth. Homes, highways and entire cities are deserted, every living thing has disappeared. Frustrated and plagued by megalomaniacal visions, Zac stands on a balcony and grandly addresses an 'audience' of cardboard standups (from Queen Elizabeth to Bob Marley), declaring himself "President of this quiet Earth."
But Hobson soon finds he may not be alone.
Receiving huge critical acclaim, and winning of 8 New Zealand Film Awards, this compelling sci-fi thriller has been rightly compared to the Twilight Zone for its chilling portrayal of a barren, post-apocalyptic world from which there is only one means of escape.
