No Judge. No Jury. No Appeals. No Deals. Get the New Special Edition Blu-rays of DEATH WISH 4 & 5 Today!

Cover art for Kino Lorber Studio Classics' Special Edition of DEATH WISH 4: THE CRACKDOWN!KINO LORBER STUDIO CLASSICS RELEASES THE FINAL TWO INSTALLMENTS IN THE INCREASINGLY INSANE "DEATH WISH" FRANCHISE TO BLU-RAY DISC!

Along with Chuck Norris, Charles Bronson (aka "the other Chuck") was a major staple of Cannon Films fare, as well as numerous action films and Westerns! But his most famous role was likely vigilante Paul Kersey from the DEATH WISH series.

Initially a proud conscientious objector, Kersey begins meting out his own brand of justice on the crime-riddled streets of New York City after the murder of his wife and sexual assault of his daughter. Bronson's character would then swiftly evolve into a one-man army that took on entire street gangs and drug cartels by the series' end!

Some of you may already own previous DEATH WISH 4 and 5 Blu-rays (both sequels have previously been released by MGM and Umbrella Entertainment) and may want to skip out on these new Kino discs. But if you have two empty spots by DEATH WISH, DEATH WISH 2, and DEATH WISH 3 on your movie shelves, it's time to fill in those gaps!

DEATH WISH 4: THE CRACKDOWN (1987)

Synopsis: Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson), who is no stranger to vigilante justice, is pulled back into the underworld of Los Angeles when the daughter of his new girlfriend, Karen (Kay Lenz - WHITE LINE FEVER, HOUSE), dies after an overdose of crack cocaine. Intent on seeing justice served, Paul goes after the kingpin who ultimately supplied the crack. As he hunts down the kingpin's minions, Paul starts taking out a large part of the city's drug-dealing population on a violent killing spree.

It doesn't seem like any effort was made to do a new 4K transfer/restoration of this film, and the sparse extras appear to have been ported over from Umbrella Entertainment's Blu-ray double feature. So if you already own this movie, feel free to make a hard pass. But if you're a completionist that is lacking this sequel, and you don't mind spending $17 - $20, then grab a copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from KINO LORBER!

She accepts but is soon assaulted by a thug (Robert Joy - AMITYVILLE 3D, MILLENNIUM, THE DARK HALF), causing irreparable disfigurement.

The thug is an associate of Olivia's ex-husband, mobster Tommy O'Shea (Michael Parks - THE EVICTORS, NIGHTMARE BEACH), who is terrorizing Olivia in an effort to discourage her from testifying against him. When the coercion gets worse, Kersey takes a ruthless stand and vows to hunt O'Shea down.

Cover art for Arrow Video's Special Edition Blu-ray of APPRENTICE TO MURDER!
RALPH L. THOMAS' THRILLER COMES TO BLU-RAY FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH A NEW 2K TRANSFER AND EXTRAS, COURTESY OF ARROW VIDEO!

Until recently, I had never even heard of APPRENTICE TO MURDER, which is apparently based upon a true story. Penned by Allan Scott (DON'T LOOK NOW) and starring Donald Sutherland (who is never bad, even if the movie is), Chad Lowe, and Mia Sara, this Norwegian-American-Canadian co-production definitely sounds like it is worth a look! If any of that caught your interest, then continue onward to learn more about this film and its new Blu-ray release!

Synopsis: In early twentieth-century Pennsylvania Dutch Country, young Billy Kelly (Chad Lowe - HIGHWAY TO HELL) falls in with a charismatic "powwower" or folk magic healer, Dr. John Reese (Donald Sutherland - DON'T LOOK NOW, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS), shunned by the rest of the community for his non-conformist beliefs. Together, they investigate the mysterious sickness that is blighting the area, which Reese believes to be the work of a sinister local hermit. But as the plague spreads and the wide-eyed Billy falls ever deeper under Reese's spell, are they doing God's work or the Devil's bidding?

Also starring Mia Sara (LEGEND) and featuring a powerhouse performance by Donald Sutherland – reunited here with DON'T LOOK NOW screenwriter Allan Scott – APPRENTICE TO MURDER is a chilling and unforgettable tale of the macabre that blurs the lines between conventional notions of "good" and "evil".

Beginning in Buffalo, New York, during the 1880s, CRIMSON PEAK stars Mia Wasikowska (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, STOKER) as Edith Cushing, an aspiring writer who is haunted by the death of her mother. Edith falls in love with seductive stranger Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston - THOR, THE AVENGERS), who whisks her off to Allerdale Hall, his baronial, yet dilapidated English mansion built upon a mountain of blood-red clay. Here Edith meets Lucille (Jessica Chastain - ZERO DARK THIRTY), Thomas' sister who at times seems hostile and jealous. As Edith struggles to feel at home in the imposing residence, she gradually uncovers a horrendous family secret and encounters supernatural forces that will help her discover the terrible truth behind CRIMSON PEAK.

Special Edition Blu-rays of AND SOON THE DARKNESS, THE MIND BENDERS, & SUDDEN TERROR Now Available!

Blu-ray cover art for Kino Lorber's Special Edition of AND SOON THE DARKNESS!
VANISHING TOURISTS, MIND CONTROL, AND POLITICAL ASSASSINATIONS HIGHLIGHT KINO LORBER'S LATEST TRIO OF BLU-RAY TITLES!

While I love everything coming from Scream Factory, Arrow Video, Vinegar Syndrome, Severin Films, and other labels, I've gotta say that I've probably picked up more new discs from Kino this year than anybody else! And speaking of Kino, they've just brought three obscure UK thrillers to Blu-ray, with gorgeous new 4K remasters! AND SOON THE DARKNESS shows you what could happen when you don't use the buddy system when bicycling through France, THE MIND BENDERS is a Cold War-era thriller about a Doctor subjecting himself to sensory-deprivation experiments, and SUDDEN TERROR follows a young Maltese boy that's being hunted by a pair of assassins! If any of that sounds interesting to you, then continue reading!

AND SOON THE DARKNESS (1970)

Synopsis: Two young British nurses bicycling through the desolate French countryside. A mysterious stranger on a lonely stretch of road. The women become separated and soon after, one of them disappears. Now the remaining girl, alone and frightened, begins an increasingly desperate search for answers among the strangely uncooperative locals. Where is her friend? Was there a murder? And as the darkness approaches, is the killer now stalking her?!

Pamela Franklin (THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE) and Michele Dotrice (THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW) co-star in this unsettling shocker directed by Robert Fuest (the DR. PHIBES movies). AND SOON THE DARKNESS remains a favorite of thriller fans for its sexual menace, sinister style and one of the most quietly chilling final twists in ’70s British cinema. Original story and screenplay by Brian Clemens (SEE NO EVIL) and Terry Nation (THE HOUSE IN NIGHTMARE PARK) with top-notch cinematography by Ian Wilson (THE CRYING GAME, BELOW).

But when his friend Dr. Henry Longman (Dirk Bogarde - ACCIDENT, MODESTY BLAISE) suspects that the death may have been the result of brainwashing, he decides to prove his theory by subjecting himself to sensory deprivation. Can the doctor resist the experiment’s sadistic side effects… or will he fall under the control of THE MIND BENDERS?

Mary Ure (WHERE EAGLES DARE) and Wendy Craig (THE SERVANT) co-star this classic 1963 sci-fi thriller directed by Basil Dearden (DEAD OF NIGHT, THE MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF) that went on to influence Ken Russell’s mind-bending ALTERED STATES. Written by James Kennaway (TUNES OF GLORY) and beautifully shot by Denys N. Coop (BILLY LIAR) with a rousing score by Georges Auric (THE WAGES OF FEAR).

SUDDEN TERROR (AKA EYEWITNESS - 1970)

Can Ziggy convince anybody that he is telling the truth before the psychotic cops are able to hunt down and murder the only eyewitness?

This is no ordinary boy-who-cried-wolf story. Legendary director John Hough (TWINS OF EVIL, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE) packs SUDDEN TERROR with plenty of tense style, stunning locations and startling violence. Susan George (STRAW DOGS), Lionel Jeffries (THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT), Jeremy Kemp (THE BLUE MAX), Peter Vaughan (Game of Thrones), Peter Bowles (THE OFFENCE) and Tony Bonner (QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER) co-star in this shocking and terrifying suspense-thriller featuring music by legendary British art-rock bands Fairfield Parlour and Van der Graaf Generator.

Arrow Video's Got "Daddy Issues:" TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN Comes to Special Edition Blu-ray on October 8th!

Cover art for Arrow Video's Special Edition of TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN.
A YOUNG WOMAN SPIRALS INTO PROSTITUTION AND DEPRAVITY IN STANLEY H. BRASLOFF'S EXPLOITATION CLASSIC!

Leave it to Arrow to dredge up an obscure exploitation film from the 70s and not only give it a 2K restoration, but load it up with tons of new special features! TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN seems like a darker take on the EMMANUELLE-style story of a young woman discovering/exploring her sexuality. Personally not my cup of tea, but if that sounds titillating to you, then continue reading onward Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Psychological trauma and aberrant sexuality abound in this twisted 1972 tale of a young woman whose severe daddy issues send her on an unforgettably bleak downward spiral.

Yearning for the love of her absentee father, Jamie inhabits an infantilized world surrounded by toys, including those which her wayward pops bizarrely continues to send her. Unable to consummate her new marriage with dashing colleague Charlie, Jamie's chance encounter with aging sex worker Pearl leads her into the murky world of prostitution where her most disturbing erotic fantasies begin to play out.

Grim, quirky and strangely affecting in equal measure, Stanley H. Brasloff's TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN is a truly one-of-a-kind effort from the heyday of the American exploitation independents, which builds to a haunting and devastating climax that lingers long after the credits roll.

MOTORCYCLING MADMEN AND VENGEFUL BOUNTY HUNTERS HIGHLIGHT KINO LORBER'S LATEST RELEASES!

I watched NIGHTMARE BEACH A looong time ago, under its alternate title of WELCOME TO SPRING BREAK, but I don't remember much about it. (Doesn't the killer electrocute victims with his motorcycle or some such nonsense? I seem to recall that.)

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE is a Rutger Hauer action flick that I've overlooked somehow. Watching "The Rut" take on KISS' Gene Simmons (who plays a terrorist in the film) sounds like it'll be a real hoot! Both films have been remastered (in 4K & 2K respectively), and come with audio commentaries and interviews! Continue onward for the full scoop on these discs Vault Dwellers!

NIGHTMARE BEACH (1989)

Synopsis: From Umberto Lenzi, notorious director of such Euro-sleaze classics as PARANOIA, SEVEN BLOODSTAINED ORCHIDS, SPASMO, EYEBALL, and CANNIBAL FEROX  comes NIGHTMARE BEACH (aka WELCOME TO SPRING BREAK), a shockingly gory tale of a madman in a motorcycle helmet who is taking out young co-eds all over the sparkling sands of South Florida during Spring Break.

Now Available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video: Special Editions of HELLRAISER, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, and IN THE AFTERMATH!

Cover art for Arrow Video's Special Edition of Clive Barker's HELLRAISER.
POST-APOCALYPTIC WASTELANDS AND VISITORS FROM HELL AWAIT YOU IN ARROW VIDEO'S TRIO OF NEW BLU-RAY RELEASES!

HELLRAISER and HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II (previously available in Arrow's now out of print SCARLET BOX) are easily two of the greatest Horror films of all time. As the years have gone by, I've gained an even larger appreciation for both films. (The other HELLRAISER sequels? Well.... not so much.) IN THE AFTERMATH is a film I am not familiar with at all: It's apparently a repurposed anime (1985's ANGEL EGG) that was edited together with new live-action footage shot by director Carl Colpaert. The result is a unique, and "hauntingly beautiful" post-apocalyptic tale! All three of these releases are available today - read onward to see if they're worth adding to your growing collections Vault Dwellers!

HELLRAISER (1987 - SPECIAL EDITION)

Synopsis: “Stephen King was once famously quoted as saying, “I have seen the future of horror… his name is Clive Barker.” That future was realized in 1987 with the release of Barker’s directorial debut HELLRAISER.

Based on his own novella The Hellbound Heart, Barker’s HELLRAISER sees Larry (Andrew Robinson) and his wife Julia (Clare Higgins) move into their new home, unaware that something evil lurks beneath the floorboards of the dilapidated house – something that wants human blood…

Introducing the world to the iconic Pinhead and his sadistic band of Cenobites, HELLRAISER became an instant genre classic upon release and remains one of the most frighteningly original visions in horror.

HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II (1988 - SPECIAL EDITION)

Having escaped the clutches of Pinhead and the demonic Cenobites, Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) awakens to finds herself detained at the Channard Institute, a hospital for the mentally ill. But her torments are far from over the chief doctor at the institute is determined to unleash the powers of Hell to achieve his own twisted ends.

IN THE AFTERMATH (1988 - SPECIAL EDITION)

Synopsis: Following in the footsteps of Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich, Roger Corman protégé Carl Colpaert (THE CREW) made his directorial debut by combining repurposed excerpts from a foreign film in this case, Mamoru Oshii s (GHOST IN THE SHELL) spellbinding 1985 anime ANGEL'S EGG with new live-action footage shot in America. The result is IN THE AFTERMATH, a haunting post-apocalyptic vision like no other.

In a radiation-soaked wasteland, two surviving soldiers, Frank and Goose, search for essential supplies amid the rubble. After a violent confrontation, Frank is haunted by visions of an angelic young girl holding a giant egg, herself a refugee from another world altogether. Could the egg be the key to saving both their worlds?

A unique mash-up of 1980s B-movie nuclear paranoia and hauntingly lyrical animation, IN THE AFTERMATH is presented in a stunning new restoration that highlights Oshii's visionary genius and Colpaert's low-budget ingenuity.

On December 18th, Arrow Video Celebrates Ed Hunt's BLOODY BIRTHDAY!

ARROW VIDEO'S SPECIAL EDITION RELEASE OF THIS MINOR HORROR CLASSIC BOASTS A NEW 2K TRANSFER AND LOADS OF NEW EXTRAS!

I have heard about BLOODY BIRTHDAY from numerous friends, but I have yet to actually sit down and watch it. And once I do, I believe that I'll invest in Arrow Video's new Special Edition, which looks to be a notch or two above Severin Films' 2014 BLOODY BIRTHDAY Blu-ray! Let's take a closer look!

Synopsis: THE BAD SEED meets HALLOWEEN in this deliciously twisted early '80s slasher offering directed by Ed Hunt (THE BRAIN) and starring the always lovable Lori Lethin (RETURN TO HORROR HIGH, THE PREY).

Debbie, Curtis and Steven may seem cute as buttons. But their angelic facade conceals the wicked, murderous streak given to them having all been born under the same solar eclipse. With the grown-ups around them blissfully unaware of their little darlings' homicidal tendencies, the evil brats begin to bump off the adults one-by-one. By gun. By arrow. By cake. Bye-bye!

Mixing the killer-kid subgenre with elements of the then-booming slice-and-dice movie, 1981's BLOODY BIRTHDAY shocks and appalls with its scenes of young children shooting, strangling and bludgeoning their way through the local population. They sure don't (and can't!) make 'em like this anymore.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 85 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - Original Uncompressed mono audio

Extras:
  • NEW! 2K restoration from original film elements!
  • NEW! Audio commentary with director Ed Hunt!
  • NEW! Audio commentary with The Hysteria Continues!
  • NEW! Interview with actress Lori Lethin!
  • NEW! Bad Seeds and Body Counts – A video appreciation of Bloody Birthday and the killer kid sub-genre by film journalist Chris Alexander!
  • Archival interview with producer Max Rosenberg.
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Reversible sleeve featuring newly commissioned artwork by Timothy Pittides!
  • First pressing only: Collector's booklet featuring new writing by Lee Gambin!
Arrow's Special Edition Blu-ray of BLOODY BIRTHDAY will be available at all Blu-ray retailers on Tuesday, December 18th and should cost between $22 - $28! Order yourself a copy now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

STUDENTS FROM DR. HERBERT WEST'S ALMA MATER ARE ATTACKED BY A DEMON IN THIS OFT-OVERLOOKED H.P. LOVECRAFT HORROR TALE!

I recall seeing THE UNNAMABLE when it came out on VHS back in the day, but I barely remember much about it. (Other than the strange fixation/crush I had on Alyda Winthrop, the film's murderous antagonist from Hell.) I haven't revisited THE UNNAMABLE since then, but when I do, I'm going to make sure I watch Unearthed Films Special Edition Blu-ray!

Synopsis: College students from Miskatonic University who retreat to an early 18th-century mansion for a weekend of lust are stalked by a fatalistic female in this horror film taken from a story by H.P. Lovecraft. The demon delights in tearing the limbs off her human victims to carry out a centuries-old family curse. Bloody graphic violence and nudity is combined with some campy comedy.
