NEW HORROR ANTHOLOGY OFFERS UP FIVE NEW TALES OF THE MACABRE FROM SEVERAL LEGENDARY DIRECTORS!
I've probably said this before in a previous post, but I am a huge sucker for Horror anthologies - It just feels like you're getting more bang for your buck! And what really caught my eye with NIGHTMARE CINEMA (other than Mickey Rourke as "The Projectionist") is the talent behind the camera!
Synopsis: In this twisted horror anthology, five strangers are drawn to an abandoned theater and forced to watch their deepest and darkest fears play out before them. Lurking in the shadows is the Projectionist (Rourke), who preys upon their souls with his collection of disturbing films. As each reel spins its sinister tale, the characters find frightening parallels to their own lives.

NIGHTMARE CINEMA comes to DVD & Blu-ray on Tuesday, September 3rd, and is relatively cheap: It should only cost between $12 - $14! Though it appears to be a bare bones disc, the price is right and word on the street is that it is actually pretty decent. However, if you're still on the fence then watch the trailer below. If that convinces you, order a copy of NIGHTMARE CINEMA today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!
August 2019 is coming to end, but it is leaving us with a nice little treasure trove of new titles on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD disc! I hope you still have some expendable income left after your Summer vacations Vault Dwellers, because you're gonna need it!

UPDATE (09/06/2019): Rumors of a possible Blu-ray release of this title from Severin Films were the result of a miscommunication in a recent Shock Waves podcast.
Also just learned today that Universal Pictures owns the rights to THE LAST SHARK lock, stock, & barrel. And so, the wait for a legit release continues....
THE LAST SHARK (aka GREAT WHITE, aka L'ULTIMO SQUALO) never got a chance to be fully embraced here in the U.S. Released briefly in the Summer of 1982, THE LAST SHARK was quickly pulled from theatrical distribution after turning a profit being deemed too derivative of JAWS.
And as we get closer to its 40th anniversary, I strongly feel that the time is right to lift Universal's ban on THE LAST SHARK so that it can finally find an audience! And what better way to reintroduce this lost film to a new generation than to give it a Blu-ray release that features a new HD restoration and oodles of extras about the making of the film, its infamous legal battle with Universal Pictures, and the growing cult following THE LAST SHARK has generated since then!
Synopsis: A Great White Shark stakes a claim off the coast of Port Harbor, and threatens the annual regatta and the reelection of Mayor William Wells. After maiming and devouring several victims, author Peter Benchley err... Benton (James Franciscus - THE VALLEY OF GWANGI) and shark hunter Ron Hamer (Vic Morrow - HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP) go after the finned fiend, leading to an explosive climax!
Plus a guest appearance by The Marlboro Man.
Availability: For a film that's been banned, it is remarkably easy to see THE LAST SHARK these days. You can watch it on YouTube or Amazon Instant Video (with Rifftrax Commentary even!), and there are several cheap DVDs floating around the web (like THIS ONE and THIS ONE) though their legitimacy is questionable. The only (allegedly) legit DVD release was back in 2015 from now defunct label called RetroVision Entertainment who put out a limited run of 500 copies. They announced that they were going to bring THE LAST SHARK to Blu-ray about a year later, but it never materialized.
Current Rights Holder: THE LAST SHARK was distributed by Edward L. Montoro's Film Ventures International (henceforth FVI), a company that produced and released multiple cult and exploitation favorites like GRIZZLY, THE DARK, PIECES, VIGILANTE, HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW, MUTANT, and others. The lawsuit with Universal unfortunately helped sink FVI and during the bankruptcy proceedings that followed, Montoro took a million bucks and vanished. But who has the rights now? The short answer: Damned if I know!
In 1984 FVI was purchased by the INI Entertainment Group which is no longer an active corporate entity. However, former INI President Irv Holender started a new company called Multicom Entertainment Group Inc. in 2010, which has a large library of films including the vast majority of FVI's titles. Though THE LAST SHARK isn't listed on their website, there's a slight possibility that Mr. Holender could retain some sort of say in distribution if the film's banned status were to change?
UPDATE: Universal owns THE LAST SHARK. This was told to me by Hudson
Horror Show's Chris Alo a while, but officially confirmed today by David
Gregory from Severin Films. If you want this to get a Region A Blu-ray release here in North America, then you best start hammering Universal on social media with polite requests, pleas, and/or demands!

New 4K or 2K restoration from best source available!

Though I own RetroVision's out of print DVD, and have even seen a 35mm print of THE LAST SHARK (thanks to Exhumed Films!), it would be supremely awesome to own this lost piece of cinematic history on Blu-ray disc! While I don't have high hopes, Scream Factory's recent Blu-ray releases of SCREAM FOR HELP and PROPHECY have proven that we should never say never!
Hey gang! Summer is coming to a close but there's still no end in sight to the weekly stream of physical media being released by all of our favorite labels! While this week's release slate is a bit on the light side, there are still plenty of new discs that you'll want to add to your collections!

MAD SCIENCE, DUELING LEGENDS, AND PREHISTORIC MONSTERS ARE ON THE MENU IN KINO LORBER'S LATEST TRIO OF BLU-RAY RELEASES!
I've gotta admit that Kino Lorber has really been doing a stellar job of bringing overlooked, unknown, and forgotten classics to Blu-ray over the past several years! And their latest batch of new Blu-ray titles is no exception! I've never seen 4D MAN, but it sounds like a great supervillain origin story, while BILLY THE KID VS. DRACULA was something I watched (and typically snoozed through) on late night TV when I was a kid! And DINOSAURUS! has long been a favorite "dinosaur on the loose" flick of mine so naturally I'm super stoked to upgrade from my old Image DVD of the film! Let's take a closer look at these three new Kino titles, shall we?
4D MAN (SPECIAL EDITION - 1959)
Synopsis: Two brothers, scientists Scott and Tony Nelson, develop an amplifier which enables a person to enter a 4th dimensional state, allowing him to pass through any object. Scott experiments on himself and discovers that each time he passes through something he ages rapidly. He begins killing people, sucking out their life energies and regaining his youth as a result. It falls to Tony and Scott's girlfriend, Linda, to try to put a stop to his murderous rampage.

DINOSAURUS! (SPECIAL EDITION - 1960)
Synopsis: Alive with thrills that started a million years ago! From legendary producer Jack H. Harris and director Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr., the team behind sci-fi classics THE BLOB and 4D MAN, comes this cult fantasy-adventure starring Ward Ramsey, Paul Lukather and Kristina Hanson.
Building a new harbor off the coast of a Caribbean island, an American engineer (Ramsey) sets off a blast on the ocean floor that uncovers the frozen bodies of a Brontosaurus, a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Neanderthal Man. The dinosaurs are hauled ashore by the construction crew, who are unaware that the giants are still alive. Struck by lightning during a fierce tropical storm, the monsters awaken and prowl the island jungles!
Also restored to life is the caveman (Gregg Martell), an amiable brute who joins the island boy Julio (Alan Roberts) in a series of wacky misadventures. A merry grab-bag of sci-fi, action and comedy, Dinosaurus! features stop-motion dinosaur animation by the legendary Projects Unlimited effects team (THE TIME MACHINE, The Outer Limits). Beautifully shot in Scope by the great Stanley Cortez (SINCE YOU WENT AWAY, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER).

Not sure about adding these new releases to your collection? Then let's take a closer look!
FORBIDDEN WORLD (1982 - LIMITED EDITION STEELBOOK)
Synopsis: The seed is planted ... the nightmare grows. On planet Xarbia, an experimental life form known as "Subject 20" has been created by an elite group of scientists in hopes of preventing a major galactic food crisis. However, instead of prolonging life, Subject 20 is destroying it, and the organism poses a double threat because it constantly changes its genetic structure. Mike Colby, a bounty hunter, is called in to investigate. Suspecting that the scientists are keeping something from him, Colby soon discovers why ...

I'm not a gigantic fan of FORBIDDEN WORLD personally, BUT if I was I would snap this release up in a heartbeat. "ALICE, SWEET ALICE" AND ITS PRECURSOR, "DON'T LOOK NOW" BOTH GET STELLAR NEW BLU-RAY RELEASES!
Though things were briefly touch and go for a few weeks, Arrow Video succeeded in bringing Alfred Sole's oft-overlooked ALICE, SWEET ALICE to Blu-ray for the first time, and it is a fantastic release! Also out today is Studiocanal's 4-Disc Collector's Edition of Nicholas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW, which includes a 4K Ultra High-Def Blu-ray disc and soundtrack CD! Both releases boast a TON of extras and are guaranteed must-haves - let's take a closer look, shall we?
ALICE, SWEET ALICE (1976)
Synopsis: A young Brooke Shields meets an untimely end in this religious-themed proto slasher par excellence from director Alfred Sole.
On the day of her first communion, young Karen (Brooke Shields) is savagely murdered by an unknown assailant in a yellow rain mac and creepy translucent mask. But the nightmare is far from over. As the knife-wielding maniac strikes again and again, Karen's bereaved parents are forced to confront the possibility that Karen's wayward sister Alice might be the one behind the mask.
Bearing influences from the likes of Hitchcock, the then-booming Italian giallo film and more specifically, Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW, ALICE, SWEET ALICE is an absolutely essential – if often overlooked – entry in the canon of 1970s American horror.

On a cold, bright autumn day in Suffolk, England, a little girl in a red mackintosh drowns in a pond – the daughter of John and Laura Baxter. Trying to recover from the tragedy, the couple arrive in Venice, Italy, where John has been commissioned to restore a church.
In the eerie atmosphere of the lagoon city in winter, they encounter two strange sisters. Laura is suddenly released from her grief when one of them, a blind psychic, tells her that she is in contact with her dead daughter. Angered and skeptical, John carries on with his work, but witnesses an unsettling vision of his own: a little girl in a red mackintosh disappearing into the Venetian alleys.
As Venice and his fate closes in on John, illusion, reality and sudden terror spiral the story to its grotesque climax, as the design in director Nicolas Roeg’s mosaic becomes unforgettably clear.

Greetings Vault Dwellers! As we say goodbye to July 2019 (damn these Summer days are just flying by, aren't they?) we get a really fond farewell from several of our favorite genre labels.
Kino Lorber Studio Classics brings the Vic Morrow vehicle TARGET: HARRY to DVD & Blu-ray disc, Well Go USA takes us to THE ISLAND, Warner Archive brings WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? to Blu-ray, and Arrow Video UK gives SCHRAMM a new (Region B locked) Limited Edition release.
Vinegar Syndrome has a really strong lineup this week featuring four titles I am completely unfamiliar with (which is never a bad thing), including MASCARA, THE PINK LADIES, PLAY DEAD, and HELLMASTER. But that all pales in comparison to Scream Factory's newest additions to their impossibly huge catalog.
There's also a slew of cult and exploitation double feature DVDs out now from Frolic Features, plus a small number of new titles on DVD and Blu-ray disc. To see the full roster, be sure to keep scrolling!
