Terror Beyond Belief! Synapse Films' Standard 4K Release of Dario Argento's TENEBRAE is Now Available!

Cover art for Synapse Films' new 2-Disc Special Edition of TENEBRAE!

SYNAPSE FILMS' 2-DISC EDITION OF "TENEBRAE," IS A MORE WALLET-FRIENDLY WAY FOR FANS TO OWN THEIR BEAUTIFUL 4K RESTORATION OF DARIO ARGENTO'S MUCH-CELEBRATED GIALLO!

Back in July of this year, Synapse Films released a Limited (to 8,000) Edition 3-Disc set of TENEBRAE, which included the recreated 90-minute UNSANE cut, as well as a collectible booklet, a double-sided poster (featuring the Italian and Japanese poster art), and a half-dozen double-sided lobby card reproductions! However, the price-tag on that bad boy was pretty hefty, starting at $65 or higher depending on the retailer! Thankfully, Synapse has made their fantastic 4K restoration of the film far more attainable with this new 4K/Blu-ray combo, which retains all of the bonus features (save one) from the limited edition release! If TENEBRAE is your Argento film of choice (personally, my favorite will always be DEEP RED) and you somehow don't own it, or are looking to upgrade from DVD or Blu-ray, then this 2-disc set deserves a spot in your collection!

Synopsis: Italian horror master Dario Argento elevates the giallo genre to new heights with 1982's TENBRAE, a darkly humorous and notoriously grisly murder-mystery that many consider to be one of his finest works. Now, Synapse Films, in conjunction with Arrow Video makes this gory suspense classic available in a new 4K restoration! American mystery author Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa, DEATH WISH II) comes to Rome to promote his newest novel, Tenebrae

A razor-wielding psychopath is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. As the mystery surrounding the killings spirals out of control, Neal investigates the crimes on his own, leading to a mind-bending, genre-twisting conclusion that will leave you breathless! Co-starring John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, NIGHTMARE BEACH), Daria Nicolodi (PHENOMENA), John Steiner (CALIGULA), and featuring beautiful cinematography by Luciano Tovoli (SUSPIRIA), this stunning all-new 4K restoration includes hours of extras!

Arrow Video Brings Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 and Aldo Lado's WHO SAW HER DIE? to Blu-ray on September 17th!

Blu-ray cover for Arrow Video's Limited Edition Blu-ray of Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2.
A MOTOCROSS TEAM BATTLES CANNIBALS IN THE DESERT & JAMES BOND TRACKS A KILLER IN THE CANALS OF VENICE IN ARROW'S LATEST RELEASES!

I'm a big fan of Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES, and yet, I've never seen it's sequel (even though I own the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release). I plan on changing that in the near future though - the dog flashback sequences alone seem worth the price of admission! And I'm still a neophyte when it comes to giallo films, which means I've never laid eyes on WHO SAW HER DIE? A Venetian murder mystery with George Lazenby sounds too good to pass up! If you're as curious as I am about these two new Blu-ray titles, then continue reading for a closer look!

THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 (1985)

Synopsis: The hills are once again alive with the sound of screaming in Wes Craven's hugely entertaining follow-up to his own groundbreaking 1977 film THE HILLS HAVE EYES. A motocross team on their way to trial a new super-fuel head out across the desert lead by Rachel, who, unbeknownst to the rest of the group, is a survivor of the cannibal clan which menaced the Carter family several years before.

Opting to take an ill-advised shortcut across the desert, the busload of youngsters drive straight into the path of the remnants of Rachel's demented cannibal kin - the menacing Pluto, and a hulking, blood-hungry brute by the name of "The Reaper." Made by Wes Craven immediately prior to his smash-hit A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 diverges from the grim tone of its predecessor in favour of fun action-horror thrills and spills replete with mutants, motorbikes, and - oh yes - dog flashbacks!

Blu-ray Cover for Arrow Video's WHO SAW HER DIE? directed by Aldo Lado and starring George Lazenby.
WHO SAW HER DIE? (1972)

Synopsis: Former Bond star George Lazenby (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, THE MAN FROM HONG KONG) headlines this classic giallo directed by Aldo Lado (SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS, NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS) - as compelling for its haunting atmosphere, twists and turns as for its parallels with another great Venetian horror/thriller - Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW.

Sculptor Franco Serpieri (Lazenby) welcomes Roberta (Nicoletta Elmi - DEEP RED) - his young daughter from a failed marriage - to Venice, unaware that a disturbed child-killer is stalking the city's canals. When Roberta's body is found floating face-down in the river, the lives of Franco and his estranged wife Elizabeth (Anita Strindberg - THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL) are ripped asunder. Desperate for vengeance, Franco turns detective in a bid to track down his daughter's killer, and in the process unearths shocking evidence of depravity and corruption which implicates some of the most respected figures in Venetian society.

Released at the height of the giallo boom, this gripping mystery thriller boasts some of the most iconic names associated with the genre on both sides of the camera. Co-starring Dominique Boschero (THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE) and Adolfo Celi (THUNDERBALL), and featuring one of the all-time greatest scores from maestro Ennio Morricone (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?), WHO SAW HER DIE? thrills anew in its high definition debut!

Cover art for Arrow Video's Blu-ray of ALICE, SWEET ALICE!
"ALICE, SWEET ALICE" AND ITS PRECURSOR, "DON'T LOOK NOW" BOTH GET STELLAR NEW BLU-RAY RELEASES!

Though things were briefly touch and go for a few weeks, Arrow Video succeeded in bringing Alfred Sole's oft-overlooked ALICE, SWEET ALICE to Blu-ray for the first time, and it is a fantastic release! Also out today is Studiocanal's 4-Disc Collector's Edition of Nicholas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW, which includes a 4K Ultra High-Def Blu-ray disc and soundtrack CD! Both releases boast a TON of extras and are guaranteed must-haves - let's take a closer look, shall we?

ALICE, SWEET ALICE (1976)

Synopsis: A young Brooke Shields meets an untimely end in this religious-themed proto slasher par excellence from director Alfred Sole.

As the knife-wielding maniac strikes again and again, Karen's bereaved parents are forced to confront the possibility that Karen's wayward sister Alice might be the one behind the mask.

Bearing influences from the likes of Hitchcock, the then-booming Italian giallo film and more specifically, Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW, ALICE, SWEET ALICE is an absolutely essential – if often overlooked – entry in the canon of 1970s American horror.

Cover of Studiocanal's Collector's Edition of DON'T LOOK NOW!
DON'T LOOK NOW (1972)

Synopsis: Starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, this is a brilliant adaptation of a Daphne Du Maurier short story. On a cold, bright autumn day in Suffolk, England, a little girl in a red mackintosh drowns in a pond – the daughter of John and Laura Baxter. Trying to recover from the tragedy, the couple arrive in Venice, Italy, where John has been commissioned to restore a church.

In the eerie atmosphere of the lagoon city in winter, they encounter two strange sisters. Laura is suddenly released from her grief when one of them, a blind psychic, tells her that she is in contact with her dead daughter. Angered and skeptical, John carries on with his work, but witnesses an unsettling vision of his own: a little girl in a red mackintosh disappearing into the Venetian alleys.

As Venice and his fate closes in on John, illusion, reality and sudden terror spiral the story to its grotesque climax, as the design in director Nicolas Roeg’s mosaic becomes unforgettably clear.

Beware of THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE - Now available on Blu-ray Disc!

RICCARDO FREDA'S OBSCURE GIALLO GETS A NEW 2K RESTORATION AND EXTRAS COURTESY OF ARROW VIDEO!

I am a neophyte when it comes to giallo films, but I'm always willing to give them a watch. (Argento's DEEP RED remains my all-time favorite, just in case you were wondering.) That being said, THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE (which is a totally bad-ass movie title) sounds like something I'd love to see! And thanks to Arrow Video, we can all experience this oft-forgotten giallo for the first time in crystal clear HD!

Synopsis: One of several 'animal-in-the-title' cash-ins released in the wake of Dario Argento's box-office smash THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE is a gloriously excessive giallo that boasts a rogues gallery of perverse characters; violent, fetishized murders, and one of the genre's most nonsensical, red-herring laden plots (which sees almost every incidental character hinted at potentially being the killer).

Set in Dublin (a rather surprising giallo setting), IGUANA opens audaciously with an acid-throwing, razor-wielding maniac brutally slaying a woman in her own home. The victim's mangled corpse is discovered in a limousine owned by Swiss Ambassador Sobiesky (Anton Diffring - WHERE EAGLES DARE) and a police investigation is launched, but when the murdering continues and the ambassador claims diplomatic immunity, tough ex-cop John Norton (Luigi Pistilli - A BAY OF BLOOD) is brought in to find the killer…

Benefiting from a sumptuous score by Stelvio Cipriani (NIGHTMARE CITY, DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS) and exuberant supporting performances from Valentina Cortese (THE POSSESSED, THIEVES' HIGHWAY), and Dagmar Lassander (THE FRIGHTENED WOMAN, THE BLACK CAT), THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE is a luridly over-the-top latter-day entry in the filmography of acclaimed director Riccardo Freda (CALTIKI: THE IMMORTAL MONSTER, MURDER OBSESSION). An archetypal giallo from the genre's heyday, Freda's film is presented here in a stunning new restoration with a host of newly produced extras!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 96 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English & Italian DTS-HD Master Audio Mono

Extras:
  • NEW! 2K RESTORATION FROM THE 35MM CAMERA NEGATIVE!
  • Original English and Italian soundtracks, titles and credits.
  • NEW! Audio commentary by giallo connoisseurs Adrian J. Smith and David Flint!
  • NEW! Of Chameleons and Iguanas - A newly filmed video appreciation by the cultural critic and academic Richard Dyer!
  • NEW! Considering Cipriani - A new appreciation of the composer Stelvio Cipriani and his score to The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire by DJ and soundtrack collector Lovely Jon!

SEVERIN FILMS BRINGS SERGIO MARTINO'S CLASSIC THRILLER, AND A MASSIVE 3-DISC DOCUMENTARY & TRAILER COMPILATION TO BLU-RAY DISC!

I've only dipped a toe into the giallo sub-genre over the years, so I am not nearly as excited as some of you may be for this pair of new Blu-rays. That being said, I've been meaning to watch more Italian cinema, and I'm a sucker for a good trailer compilation, so I'll probably be adding these to the mighty Vault collection at some point! Arrow Video Brings THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE & DOOM ASYLUM to Blu-ray on July 17th!

SLASHER AND GIALLI FANS WILL DEFINITELY WANT TO OWN ARROW VIDEO'S LATEST SPECIAL EDITION BLU-RAYS!

Chalk up two more great Arrow releases for films that  I'm not super familiar with. I'm a fan of some of Sergio Martino's other films (e.g. THE GREAT ALLIGATOR, ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN), and I do enjoy the occasional giallo film, so THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE is a must-see for yours truly! And I love slasher movies in general, so I'm definitely interested in DOOM ASYLUM as well! Continue reading Vault Dwellers to find out more about this duo of stellar releases!

THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE (1971)

Synopsis: One of the major consequences of Western Europe s post-war Economic Miracle was the proliferation of international travel. Eager to tap into audiences desire to experience the glamor of the jet set lifestyle, the popular filmmakers of the day rushed to make the most of the exotic locales at their disposal.

Arguably no other giallo captured this trend as vividly as The Case of the Scorpion s Tail. The film begins in London, where Lisa Baumer (Evelyn Stewart - THE PSYCHIC) learns that her husband has died in a freak plane accident. Summoned to Athens to collect his generous life insurance policy, she soon discovers that others besides herself are keen to get their hands on the money and are willing to kill for it.

Meanwhile, private detective Peter Lynch (George Hilton - THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH) arrives to investigate irregularities in the insurance claim. Teaming up with a beautiful reporter, Cléo Dupont (Anita Strindberg - YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY), Lynch resolves to unearth the truth... before he too ends up on the wrong end of the murderer s straight razor.

The second giallo by genre master Sergio Martino (TORSO, THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR), THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL combines stunning views of Athens and the Greek coastline with brutal bursts of violence, a typically tangled script by Ernesto Gastaldi (DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS), and a cast overflowing with Euro cult talent, including Alberto de Mendoza (A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN), Janine Reynaud (Jess Franco's SUCCUBUS) and Luigi Pistilli (A BAY OF BLOOD).

DOOM ASYLUM (1987)

Synopsis: If you thought SEX AND THE CITY 2 was a stomach-churner, you ain't seen nothing yet! Long before playing one of Carrie Bradshaw's best gal pals, actress Kristen Davis found herself up against an altogether different kind of horror in 1987's DOOM ASYLUM: a riotous mix of gore, gags and goth girl groups galore!

When a group of horny teens wind up on the grounds of a creepy abandoned asylum, they think they've found the perfect place to party. Little do they know that inside the building's crumbling walls lurks a freakishly deformed maniac, driven to madness by the tragic loss of his fiancée in a car accident. With an array of grisly surgical tools at his disposal, it's only a matter of time before the youngsters begin meeting various splattery ends at the hands of the ghoulish Coroner.

Helmed by director Richard Friedman (SCARED STIFF, PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERIC'S REVENGE), and also starring Penthouse Pet of the Year 1988 Patty Mullen (FRANKENHOOKER), DOOM ASYLUM combines outlandish gore and a wise-cracking villain to create one of the most wildly entertainingly blood-spattered slashers of the late '80s

Along with their Blu-ray of BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (available in Limited and Special Editions), Arrow need only release FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET to complete the "Animal Trilogy."

Synopsis: Following the success of his debut feature, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as ''nine times more suspenseful'' than its predecessor, was THE CAT O' NINE TAILS.

When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arno (Karl Malden - PATTON, ONE-EYED JACKS), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute's scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus - THE VALLEY OF GWANGI, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperiled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis - CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE), Franco's young niece, may also be in the killer's sights…

This second entry in the so-called ''Animal Trilogy'' found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (IL SORPASSO) and Rada Rassimov (BARON BLOOD), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by Academy Award Winner Ennio Morricone (THE HATEFUL EIGHT, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, Sergio Leone's "Man with No Name" Trilogy), THE CAT O' NINE TAILS remains one of Argento's most suspenseful and underrated films.

Malden and Franciscus are a crime-solving team in THE CAT O' NINE TAILS!
