ORCA Finally Gets Its North American Blu-ray Debut Thanks to Scream Factory!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE!
PREPARE TO BE TRAUMATIZED ALL OVER AGAIN WHEN YOU REVISIT ONE OF CINEMA'S GREATEST REVENGE TALES!

ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE is often lumped in with the slew of films that followed in JAWS' wake, and unfairly so because it has more in common with DEATH WISH than it does with Spielberg's eternal classic. ORCA has previously been released on (Region Free) Blu-ray by Umbrella Entertainment (read my review of that release HERE), so I'm guessing that this Scream Factory disc is basically a carbon copy as the only thing missing is the short 5-minute chat with Martha De Laurentiis. If you've been pining to revisit the dreaded "Orcabortion" scene in HD, well now is certainly the time to upgrade Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Sleek, intelligent, beautiful ... and hell-bent on revenge. Producer Dino De Laurentiis (KING KONG, RAGTIME) and director Michael Anderson (AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, LOGAN'S RUN) join forces to present the rousing action-adventure tale of ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE. It's the story of one powerful being against another: a strong, determined fisherman by the name of Captain Nolan (Richard Harris - UNFORGIVEN) versus an equally determined killer whale.

When the giant whale's pregnant mate is maimed and killed by Nolan, the whale seeks vengeance: smashing boats, attacking a seacoast village, and eventually luring his human adversaries to a final confrontation in the marine creature's own arctic turf. Charlotte Rampling, Will Sampson, and Bo Derek (in her feature film debut) also star in this seafaring epic brimming with nail-biting suspense and spectacular special effects!

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 82 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & 2.0 Mono

Extras:
  • Audio Commentary With Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin
  • Theatrical Trailer
Scream Factory's Blu-ray of ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and should cost between $23 - $26! Get yourself a copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

You Will Utter a PRIMAL SCREAM During the CHAOS of THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION!

DARK FORCE ENTERTAINMENT JUST RELEASED THREE NEW TITLES TO BLU-RAY FEATURING FUZZY EIGHT-LEGGED VOLKSWAGENS, DEADLY SPACE FUEL, AND A RIP-OFF OF "LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT!"

I'm more or less interested in two of these new Dark Force Entertainment releases Vault Dwellers: THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION (which was released on Blu-ray by VCI years ago and loaded with cool extras... that aren't on this release) and PRIMAL SCREAM, which is making its Blu-ray debut! As for CHAOS (which is based on "an original idea" by David DeFalco and Steven Jay Bernheim. HA!)... I already own LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT so I don't really need this pale imitation of Wes Craven's notorious film.

If any of these three titles have managed to pique your curiosity, then please continue onward to learn more about this trio of new Dark Force Entertainment Blu-rays fellow collectors of physical media!

CHAOS (2005)

Synopsis: Based upon "an original idea" from writer/director David DeFalco, CHAOS (which features the late Sage Stallone) follows two teenage girls on a mission to find drugs at a rave get more than they bargained for. One is sexually assaulted and they are both tortured in horrific ways. The attackers seek refuge in the home of one of the victims' parents, leading to a violent chain of events.

Disc Specs:
Unrated | Color | 77 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! HD scan of the original uncut 35mm negative with extensive scene correction!
  • NEW! Interviews with co-producer Marc Sheffler of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT and Stephen "Frankie" Wozniak!
  • Director and Producer Commentary
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
CHAOS is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold, and should cost approximately $18.00! If a cheap knock-off of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT sounds like a good time, pick up a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or directly from the DARK FORCE SUPERSTORE!

Cover art for Dark Force Entertainment's new Blu-ray of THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION!
THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION (1975)

Synopsis: After a black hole strikes, it opens up another dimension in a rural Wisconsin town, and soon there is an invasion of gigantic arachnids who crave human flesh. NASA scientists Dr. Vance (Steve Brodie - THE WIZARD OF SPEED AND TIME) and Dr. Jenny Langer (Barbara Hale) try their best to save humanity as a romance blooms between them. Meanwhile, local Dan Kester (Robert Easton - THE TOUCH OF SATAN) squabbles with his wife, Ev (Leslie Parrish), and has a dalliance with local bartender Helga (Christiane Schmidtmer).

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 80 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! HD scan of an original camera negative!
  • Giant Spider Music Video
  • Interview with Director Bill Rebane
  • Interview with Actor Robert Easton
While it may have a better transfer than VCI's previous release (which was featured in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio), Dark Force's disc lacks the great extras that populated VCI's 3-disc release! But seeing as how that set is currently out of print, this disc is the only way to watch Bill Rebane's notorious feature film, which had the distinct honor of appearing on one of the funniest episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000! THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION costs between $18 - $22, and can be obtained from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Cover art for Dark Force Entertainment's Blu-ray of PRIMAL SCREAM!
PRIMAL SCREAM (1987)

Synopsis: The year is 1993. Earth's fuel sources are rapidly decaying. A recently established top-secret government project regarding the deep space mining of a revolutionary new energy source is under way- independently financed and protected at any cost by a mysterious corporation who motives may not be as pure as the gullible public is lead to believe.

Code named: HELLFIRE, this new energy source in its stable form is 100% manageable - no fallout, no acid rain, no ill effects. In its unstable form, however, HELLFIRE is capable of igniting human flesh and completely disintegrating the body.

And Corby McHale is caught right in the middle... Up against the rich and ruthless whose power has no limit and who will do anything to protect their deadly secret. The closer McHale gets to the solution, the deadlier the game becomes!

Severin Films' AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION is Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 06/09/2020!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Hey Vault Dwellers! As I stated last week, June is NOT a great month for new releases, and will  be pretty light overall. Just look at this week's release slate for proof! That being said, this week's thin release roster actually contains a few hidden gems.

The controversial Universal/Blumhouse film THE HUNT is now available on DVD & Blu-ray disc, as are WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS, and THE DINNER PARTY.

Kino Lorber dropped their third FILM NOIR: THE DARK SIDE OF CINEMA collection, and Mill Creek floods the home video market with various new titles, including the highly anticipated double feature of THE H-MAN & BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, plus two 10-Film DVD sets (SWEATING BULLETS and A DEADLY PLACE).

But this week's champ is hands-down Severin Films. Along with DVD releases of THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH and CARNIVAL MAGIC, Severin finally unleashed their impressive AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION boxed set. Featuring thirty-two films and a slew of extras, this is likely the definitive release for the (almost) entirety of the late exploitation filmmakers' directorial career!

There's honestly not much else worth mentioning this week gang (just a bunch of direct-to-DVD junk and anime), but if you want to see the full roster, just scroll on down!

The Most Controversial Film of the Year is Here: THE HUNT is Now Available on DVD & Blu-ray!

Blu-ray cover for THE HUNT (2020)!
HUNTING HUMANS IS ALL THE RAGE IN THIS (NOT-SO) POLITICALLY CHARGED THRILLER FROM BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS!

I remember all the hoopla when the first trailers for THE HUNT hit the web, and I for one was more than ready to scope out this darkly humorous contemporary version of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. Surprisingly the film was shelved due to outrage caused by its perceived anti-conservative bent (which apparently isn't the case), and didn't get released in theaters until March of this year.

And then the global pandemic happened, theater chains shut down, and the film just didn't have enough time to find its audience. But now that THE HUNT is available on DVD & Blu-ray disc, those of us that missed it on the big screen can finally give it a look (if we haven't already rented it digitally that is)!

Synopsis: In this subversive satire, a group of elites gather for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites' master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, Glow), knows The Hunters' game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off one by one as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 90minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.39:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1
French & Spanish DTS 5.1 Surround Sound

Extras:
  • Crafting The Hunt Featurette
  • Death Scene Breakdowns Featurette
  • Athena vs. Crystal: Hunter or Hunted? Featurette
THE HUNT is now available on Blu-ray (and DVD), and should cost between $22 - $23!  You can order yourself a copy right now from either AMAZON or BULL MOOSE!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 06/02/2020 is the new 4K Ultra HD release of JAWS!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Welcome to June 2020 Vault Dwellers! Believe it or not, this month is going to be relatively light on new DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD titles! That being said, there will still be multiple new releases that are going to make your collective mouths water, and this week is no exception!

Scream Factory's only new title this week is WITCHES IN THE WOODS, their parent company Shout! Factory released TOKYO GODFATHERS and THE BLACKOUT: INVASION EARTH, and Severin Films' slightly delayed THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH has finally arrived on Blu-ray disc!

Kino Lorber Studio Classics released LET'S KILL UNCLE and THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE to DVD & Blu, Shudder's ONE CUT OF THE DEAD and first season of CREEPSHOW: THE SERIES are both readily available from most online retailers, as is Dark Sky Films' 1BR.

For those of you who dabble in collecting imports, there are several new titles worth mentioning: Powerhouse's Indicator label out of the UK just dropped new Region Free Blu-rays of NIGHT TIDE and SEE NO EVIL, while Australia's new [Imprint] label dropped stellar new Blus of I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE and the original THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (which is coming to the U.S. via Criterion in July)!

But the big title this week has to be Universal's new 45th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of Steven Spielberg's JAWS! Along with new packaging (which comes with a 44-page booklet and lenticular cover), the disc contains all of the previous extras from Univeral's previous Blu-ray release, and promises the best picture and audio presentation of this classic film yet!

There are still quite a few DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs I didn't mention, so be sure to scroll down to see the full list of new releases!

On June 2nd, Universal Gives JAWS a New 4K Release for its 45th Anniversary!

New cover art for Universal's 45th Anniversary 4K UHD of Spielberg's JAWS!
JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO STOP UPGRADING TITLES IN YOUR MOVIE COLLECTION: "JAWS" ARRIVES ON 4K ULTRA HD DISC!

I've owned JAWS in various formats over the decades (twice on VHS, twice on DVD, once on Blu-ray), played the video games, read the book (several times), reviewed and podcasted about Spielberg's iconic movie, and even took a fantastic "JAWS Tour" on Martha's Vineyard several years ago! I can quote JAWS almost verbatim, and have seen it in 35mm twice while chugging some Narragansett beer - needless to say, it is my favorite film of all time! Universal's last Blu-ray release of this Spielberg classic was a revelation - the film was color-corrected, cleaned up considerably, and given an amazing new audio track that made experiencing JAWS at home even more immersive! There was absolutely no way that this film could be improved upon.... UNTIL NOW!

Synopsis: When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, JAWS set the standard for edge-of-your-seat suspense, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the movie industry. Featuring an amazing cast, and an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, JAWS remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history!

Universal's 45th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K release of JAWS swims up and bites retailers on the ass on Tuesday, June 2, and should cost between $20 - $24! Instead, I'll focus my efforts on Arrow's three other new titles this week, which include BLOOD TIDE (starring James Earl Jones, and produced by infamous ISLAND OF DEATH director Nico Mastorakis!), WHITE FIRE (a heist flick starring Robert Ginty and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson), and Lucky MeKee's THE WOMAN! To learn more about these new Arrow titles, just continue onward Vault Dwellers!

BLOOD TIDE (1982)

Meanwhile a couple, Neil and Sherry, arrive on the island in search of Neil's missing sister, Madeline.

Written and produced by Nico Mastorakis - the man behind such genre favourites as ISLAND OF DEATH, THE ZERO BOYS, THE WIND, and many others - and directed by Richard Jefferies (screenwriter of SCARECROWS and TRON: LEGACY), BLOOD TIDE is a suspense-filled creature feature surging with blood, nudity, and beachside aerobics!

SCREAM FACTORY GIVES CARPENTER'S "ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK" SEQUEL A NEW 4K TRANSFER AND BONUS FEATURES!

While not all of John Carpenter's later works were up to snuff with the legendary films he shot in the 70s and 80s, I still have a soft spot for most of them, including the oft-maligned ESCAPE FROM L.A. Is it super cheesy? Absolutely. Is it a far cry from the classic original? Definitely. But dammit, despite the surfing, and the basketballing, and the hang-gliding.... it is still very much a Snake Plissken adventure at its core!

And now it's back in print and better than ever with Scream Factory's new Collector's Edition release, which contains a new 4K transfer of the film, plus numerous NEW cast & crew interviews! To learn more about this disc (which you're going to buy, even if you hate the movie) just continue reading fellow Carpenter fans!

Synopsis: Snake is back! Kurt Russell rejoins filmmakers John Carpenter and Debra Hill to do to Los Angeles what they did to the Big Apple in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK – with even more futuristic thrills and big action!

Into the 9.6-quaked Los Angeles of 2013 comes Snake Plissken (Russell). His job: wade through L.A.'s ruined landmarks to retrieve a doomsday device. Don't miss the excitement as Snake surfs Wilshire Blvd., shoots hoops at the Coliseum, dive bombs the Happy Kingdom theme park, and mixes it up with a wild assortment of friends and foes including Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, George Corraface, Cliff Robertson and Pam Grier. ESCAPE FROM L.A. is a "go-for-broke action extravaganza" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)!

On June 2nd, You Can Own the (Nearly) Complete Cinematic Works of Al Adamson!

A front glimpse of Severin Film's massive 32-film AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION Blu-ray set!
SEVERIN FILMS ASTOUNDS COLLECTORS WITH THEIR NEW BOXED SET OF AL ADAMSON FLICKS!

Note: There is an issue with Disc #8 in this set - Severin Films is working hard to get replacement discs out to those of you who already purchased this!

2020 has been an awful year: We've got widening political divides, a global pandemic, and have lost so many great artists & entertainers. And yet, this has been one of the most amazing years as far as Blu-ray releases are concerned. Criterion is bringing us an amazing BRUCE LEE COLLECTION, Arrow Video is bringing us all of the GAMERA films in one set, and then there's Severin Films' incredible 32-film AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION, which not only boasts (almost) the entire directorial filmography of the late exploitation filmmaker, but a feature-length documentary about his career plus numerous bonus features!

If you ordered from SEVERIN FILMS directly, you probably already have your set (like I do!) but for those of you who haven't ordered yet (likely because of its pricing), let's dig into this set and see if I can tempt you!

About this Set: Severin Films is proud to present the most comprehensive Blu-ray box set ever dedicated to the works of a single genre filmmaker with Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection, featuring 31 remastered Adamson films on 14 discs, plus trailers, audio commentaries, a 126-page book, the 2019 documentary feature BLOOD & FLESH: THE REEL LIFE & GHASTLY DEATH OF AL ADAMSON and more. Exhaustively compiled for the first time ever, Adamson’s ouvre spans a wild beyond belief world of bloody brains, vicious cowboys, naughty nurses, decrepit actors, sexy stewardesses, mad scientists, brutal bikers, Blaxploitation mayhem, kung fu killers and “scenes so SICK the Movies could never show them before!”

The life and career of B-movie maverick Adamson – known for such low budget classics as SATAN’S SADISTS, DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN and THE NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES (as well as his own grisly 1995 murder) – reveals perhaps the most bizarre career in Hollywood history!

FRANKENSTEIN and THE NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES, to his grisly demise, the Al Adamson story remains wild beyond belief in!

THE FEMALE BUNCH (1971): After a string of bad times with men, Sandy tries to kill herself. Co-waitress Libby saves her and takes her to meet some female friends of hers who live on a ranch in the desert. Grace, the leader of the gang, puts Sandy through her initiation and they get on with the real job of running drugs across the Mexican border, hassling poor farmers, taking any man they please, and generally raising a little hell. Congratulations! You made it to the bottom! This limited edition set from Severin Films is a real monster isn't it?! It basically has everything Al Adamson ever directed - All it's missing an X-Rated Western called LASH OF LUST, a film Adamson co-directed called DOOMSDAY VOYAGE, the new footage he shot for 1969's THE BEDROOM, and the intros and conclusions to 1982's CHUCK CONNORS' GREAT WESTERN THEATRE! Even with those omissions, this is probably the most comprehensive boxed set devoted to a film director that I have ever seen!

Severin Films is currently selling AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION for $170 (plus tax & shipping) on their site, and there are still some copies in stock! Otherwise, you'll have to pay more (approximately $235) and wait until Tuesday, June 2nd to procure a copy from other retailers, such as AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, and DIABOLIK DVD! I know this is a big decision to make as a collector gang, but don't wait too long to make up your mind, because this set is going to go fast! And once it's gone - IT IS GONE!
