Media Blasters Quietly Debuts ZEIRAM 2 on Blu-ray Disc!

Cover art for Media Blasters' new ZEIRAM 2 Blu-ray!

Acting as a followup to IRIA: Zeiram the Animation, ZEIRAM was a fairly decent live-action Japanese sci-fi flick that relied heavily on practical effects. The sequel (which I used to have on a bootleg VHS tape) upped the ante a bit, and to my knowledge, has never received a legit DVD release here in the States.

So imagine my surprise when I discovered that ZEIRAM 2 arrived on Blu-ray disc this past Tuesday through Media Blasters' Tokyo Shock label! This new disc contains both English & Japanese audio options and offers up a handful of special features, all at a relatively low price! Now if they'd just release the original ZEIRAM to Blu-ray, I'd be all set!

Synopsis: Upon successfully completing another important mission, the beautiful alien bounty hunter Iria returns to Earth. Along with her computer, Bob, and her assistant, Fujicrow, she is assigned a new android partner. Unfortunately, residing inside the android is the most cunning and evil combat life form known in the universe- a vicious Zeiram unit! When the android is damaged during combat, Zeiram emerges from hiding and begins to terrorize Iria and her comrades and soon becomes a serious planetary threat that must be stopped at all costs!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 107 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (?)
Audio - English & Japanese

  • The Making of Zeiram 2
  • True Story! - 82 Days with Amemiya Family
  • Zeiram 2 trailer

ZEIRAM 2 is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and should only cost between $14 - $16! Add this oddball Japanese sci-fi actioner to your collection today - order yourself a copy from AMAZON or BULL MOOSE!

Cover art for Mill Creek Entertainment's INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES: THE COMPLETE FILM SERIES Blu-ray set!

In 1943, Universal Pictures obtained the rights to adapt six tales from the then popular Inner Sanctum Mystery radio plays into feature-length motion pictures. Starring the late Lon Chaney Jr., these six tales of murder and intrigue remained largely forgotten. But with every "boutique" label raiding the vaults of the big studios these days (e.g. Kino Lorber Studio Classics' Film Noir collections and Scream Factory's Universal Horror Collections), it was only a matter of time before someone dug these up - and that someone turned out to be Mill Creek Entertainment! Now all six Inner Sanctum Mystery films have made their Blu-ray debut and come complete with a number of great special features including audio commentaries, interviews, and an hour-long documentary, and some super cool digital extras! You'll have a hauntingly good time with horror icon Lon Chaney, Jr., as he gives timeless performances in these spooky feature-length films:

Calling Dr. Death (1943) - A doctor is not sure if he murdered his wife and has his nurse try to find the truth by hypnotizing him.

Weird Woman (1944) - While on a trip, a professor falls in love with an exotic native woman who turns out to be a supernatural being.

Dead Man's Eyes (1944) - When an artist is blinded, an operation to restore his sight depends on another person willing to donate their eyes.

The Frozen Ghost (1945) - A stage mentalist and a discredited plastic surgeon are involved in mysterious goings-on in an eerie wax museum.

Strange Confession (1945) - Flashbacks reveal the events leading up to a man's revenge on the racketeer who took advantage of his wife.

Pillow of Death (1945) - A lawyer in love with his secretary is suspected of suffocating his wife, among others.

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 09/15/2020!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 09/15/2020 is Vestron Video Collector's Series Blu-ray of LITTLE MONTERS (1989)!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers and welcome to your weekly dose of all things DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K disc related! Sorry I'm a little late in posting last Tuesday's new titles - it's probably going to be the new norm until I get my son "Action" Jackson on a more normalized sleep schedule. (Ah yes. Sleep... those little slices of death... how I miss them.)

This past Tuesday Kino Lorber Studio Classics released THE GHOST BREAKERS and THE CAT AND THE CANARY to Blu-ray disc, Arrow dropped their Blu of JESUS SHOWS YOU THE WAY TO THE HIGHWAY, Scorpion Releasing unveiled their new Blu-ray of DEF-CON 4, and Warner Bros. gave RED DWARF: THE PROMISED LAND its North American debut!

For you tokusatsu/kaiju fans, Mill Creek released yet another Ultra-set to Blu-ray featuring both UTLRAMAN GINGA and ULTRAMAN GINGA S, MVD Marquee Collection gave the forgotten DAHMER a nice Collector's Edition release on both DVD and Blu-ray, and Paramount released a 5-Movie STEPHEN KING COLLECTION, which features PET SEMATARY and its 2019 remake, SILVER BULLET, THE STAND (TV Mini-Series), and for the first time ever, THE DEAD ZONE featuring Christopher Walken!

But this week totally goes to Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series label, which has returned with a vengeance after remaining quiet for almost a full year! Vestron kicks things off with new Blu-ray discs of LITTLE MONSTERS (1989) and Cronenberg's SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN). Both movies come with slipcovers and a slew of new (and archival) extras, and amazingly both releases are surprisingly cheap, which is great news for us collectors!

To see the full list of this past week's new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HD discs, just keep scrolling Vault Dwellers!

The Vestron Video Collector's Series Finally Returns With Two New Titles: LITTLE MONSTERS & SHIVERS!

Cover art for Vestro Video Collector's Series' Blu-ray release of LITTLE MONSTERS!

Rejoice for Lionsgate's Vestron label is back with two really solid titles! LITTLE MONSTERS has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid - I've always felt that it was a spiritual successor to NIGHTBREED. And speaking of David Cronenberg.... SHIVERS is the other new Vestron release this week! I've never seen it (I plan on rectifying that this weekend) but I'm definitely looking forward to this early body-horror tale that sounds like a mixture of NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and RABID! Both new Blu-ray releases come with a variety of new special features (including audio commentaries and cast & crew interviews) and are remarkably cheap - you'd be a fool not to add them to your collections ASAP Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Brian (Fred Savage - THE PRINCESS BRIDE, THE WIZARD) isn't scared of the monster living under the bed. On the contrary, when he gets to know the wild-eyed boogeyman, Maurice (Howie Mandel - WALK LIKE A MAN, voice of Gizmo in GREMLINS), the pair become fast friends. During the night, Maurice takes his young charge into the netherworld of monsters, where they have a great time making mischief in the lives of sleeping children. But Brian's opinion of Maurice and his freewheeling lifestyle changes when he discovers that he himself is turning into a monster.

Disc Specs:

  • NEW! "Monsters Big & Small" – An Interview with Special Makeup Effects Creator Robert Short!

  • "Making Maurice" – Vintage Footage of Howie Mandel's Makeup Transformation
  • Vintage EPK & VHS Promo
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Still Gallery
LITTLE MONSTERS is now available on Blu-ray and is shockingly cheap: The introductory price is between $13 - $15! That amazes me because of all the new extras included with this release, and also because all of the previous Vestron titles were in the $20 - $25 range! So relieve this (somewhat traumatic) late 80s children's classic today and get yourself a copy from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Cover art for the Vestron Video Collector's Series Blu-ray release of David Cronenberg's SHIVERS!

Synopsis: After a scientist living in a posh apartment complex slaughters a teen girl and kills himself, investigators discover that the murderer had been carrying on experiments involving deadly parasites. Roger St. Luc (Paul Hampton - WOMEN OF THE PREHISTORIC PLANET, HIT!), a doctor living in the building, and his aide, Nurse Forsythe (Lynn Lowry - THE CRAZIES, THE CAT PEOPLE), then realize that the parasites are on the loose, attacking fellow tenants. And those who become hosts turn into erotically obsessed maniacs who pass the bugs on through violent sex.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 88 minutes | Region A

The Vestron Blu-ray release of SHIVERS is also currently available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and goes for between $13 - $15! Again, this price point is mind-blowing considering previous Vestron title pricing, plus the number of new extras created for this release - I really hope this is a continuing trend! Get your copy of SHIVERS now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Cover art for Scorpion Releasing's new Blu-ray of DEF-CON 4!

DEF-CON 4 doesn't seem to get mentioned much these days, and yet this film's theatrical one-sheet is easily one of the most memorable, and iconic pieces of art from the long-lost VHS rental era. I never got around to watching this movie back in the day (though I definitely perused the VHS sleeve numerous times in my youth) so I'm excited to see it finally get a Blu-ray release here in the U.S.! (Prior to this disc, it was released by Arrow Video in a Region B-locked release.) The film has been newly remastered in high-definition, contains a handful of special features, reversible cover art, and comes packaged in a collectible slipcover, which should excite some of you collectors! To get the full details of this new release, read onward!

Synopsis: Three astronauts, Tim Choate (THE FIRST TIME, GHOST STORY), Kate Lynch (MEATBALLS), John Walsch (BODY PARTS), in a secret spaceship lose all contact with the ground and observe what appears to be a nuclear exchange between the USA and Russia! Two months later, the spacecraft’s guidance system is mysteriously reprogrammed, forcing the crew’s return to a vastly changed Earth, where they encounter crazed cannibals, paranoid survivalists, and a sadistic despotic ruler! Hang on tight, DEF-CON 4 is a sci-fi survival thriller that will leave you breathless!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers! Sorry for the lack of news posts lately, but it has been a crazy couple of weeks here at Vault HQ! The Vault Mistress and I welcomed our son into the world back on August 27th during a lengthy hospital visit. Long story short: There were medical concerns for momma, so they tried to induce labor. Our kid didn't want to come out, so the doctors had to go in.

And now, two weeks later, I'm trying to settle into my role as a parent as I return to my normal schedule at the day job, and somewhere in between all of that, I'll be devoting any little bit of spare time I have left to maintaining this blog and main website. Wish me luck gang, because I am definitely going to need it!

But enough about me: Ya'll came here to find out what's new on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD disc! Well, there's honestly not a lot to get excited about this week Vault Dwellers, but as always, there's a handful of titles worth adding to your growing collections!

Along with a slew of Frolic Pictures triple (and double) feature DVDs (scroll down to see the entire list of them), DC/Warner Bros.' SUPERMAN: MAN OF TOMORROW, and a 60th anniversary edition Blu-ray of PSYCHO, there isn't much else to really shine the spotlight on, except for Universal's new THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK CLASSICS COLLECTION. This four film set features 4K restorations of REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO, (two different cuts of) PSYCHO, and THE BIRDS - naturally each disc comes with a variety of special features.

That's all the news that's fit to print - if you want to see the full roster of this week's new releases, just scroll on down Vault Dwellers! And please bear with me as I navigate this new (anxiety-riddled) world of fatherhood - my presence may be sporadic for a while!

Peter Cushing Battles the Daleks in Kino Lorber's Two Newest Blu-ray Titles!

Cover art for Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS!

I have yet to really delve into the realm of Dr. Who, but I am familiar with the vast majority of actors who have portrayed the character over the decades. But imagine my surprise years ago when I attended a 35mm film festival and got a rare chance to see DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS on the big screen, featuring Peter Cushing as the titular sci-fi hero! And now this oft-forgotten film, and it's followup, DALEKS' INVASION EARTH 2150 A.D., are available to own on Region A Blu-ray disc thanks to the efforts of Kino Lorber Studio Classics! Both films appear to feature the same transfer and extras as their Region B counterparts, however, the audio track for DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS has been newly restored, and now features dialogue, sound effects, and music that has been missing from previous releases! Whether you're a "Whovian," or a Peter Cushing completist, you'll definitely want to add these two flicks to your collection ASAP!

Synopsis: Screen legend Peter Cushing (THE SKULL, THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, MADHOUSE) plays everyone’s favorite Timelord, and having invented the TARDIS, a strange machine capable of traveling into other dimensions, the Doctor and his three young accomplices set forth on a quest through time and space. Their journey takes them into the dark, undiscovered depths of the universe and to the planet of Skaro, a primitive world devastated by nuclear war and populated by two warring species: a peaceful tribe known as the Thals and a life form heavily mutated by radiation, encased in protective machines... a merciless force of destruction known as the Daleks!

Now fully restored, DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS, directed by Gordon Flemyng (THE SPLIT, GREAT CATHERINE), was the first big-screen film adaptation of British TV’s most iconic sci-fi hero, and was the first time Doctor Who was ever seen in color! Screenplay by Milton Subotsky (THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE), based on the original BBC TV serial by Terry Nation (The Avengers).

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 83 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)

For the future of planet Earth now belongs to the Daleks, a destructive army of alien invaders who have turned the human race into cowering slaves. Meanwhile deep within the London Underground a group of resistance freedom fighters are planning an attack.

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 08/18/2020!

The B-Moview News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo.
Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 08/18/2020 is Arrow Video's 4K Limited Edition of FLASH GORDON!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers! Once again I find myself falling behind on my duties as I inch ever so closer to fatherhood - my apologies! So let's not waste any more time and leap right into this week's list of awesome Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD titles!

Shudder brings both PREVENGE and season one of their CURSED FILMS series to DVD & Blu-ray, Scorpion Releasing gives DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR its Blu-ray debut, and the indie kaiju parody NOTZILLA arrives on DVD & Blu-ray disc!

Scream Factory adds yet another Hammer Horror title to their catalog, namely FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL, Kino Lorber Studio Classics drops numerous classic war films onto Blu-ray disc (e.g. THE RED BALL EXPRESS, RAID ON ROMMEL), as well as THOSE WHO DESERVE TO DIE, and Paramount gives us a 4-MOVIE THRILLS & CHILLS COLLECTION that contains the PET SEMATARY remake, A QUIET PLACE, CRAWL, and OVERLORD! (Not too shabby a set eh?)

But Arrow Video destroys all of the competition this week with their Blu-ray releases of PITCH BLACK and THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, their mighty GAMERA: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION Limited Edition set, and their awesome new 4K Ultra HD release of FLASH GORDON! The Gamera set is ridiculously impressive and loaded up with all twelve films, comic reproductions, and books about Japan's other famous monster! The only reason I didn't make it my pick of the week is because the Region A release is (shockingly) SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE! (Word is, another run is in the works, but it'll be a "standard" release with just the films. Stay tuned for more details!)

Therefore, Arrow's FLASH GORDON 4K wins the week with its outstanding audio & video presentation, and hours of extras including: cast & crew interviews, archival commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, original endings, documentaries, 35th anniversary reunion featurettes, easter eggs, and more!

To see the entire roster of this weeks new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HD discs, just keep on scrolling my friends!

TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE Comes to Blu-ray on August 25th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's upcoming Collector's Edition Blu-ray of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE!

I've always been a big fan of horror anthologies because I've always felt that you get more bang for your buck, and honestly, TALES is probably one of the better ones I've seen! Often eclipsed by the likes of CREEPSHOW, CREEPSHOW 2, TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, and BODY BAGS, it's great to see TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE finally getting a little love!

All previous archival extras are included in this release (along with new cover art), as are a new audio commentary and a brand new feature-length making-of documentary! (Woohoo!) I'm pretty excited for this release, but I'll have to hold off on picking it up for a bit. But don't let that stop you! If you love horror anthologies and have somehow missed out on this one, then by all means give it a look! For more details on this upcoming Scream Factory title, read on fellow collectors of physical media!

Synopsis: To keep from being eaten by a modern-day witch (Deborah Harry - VIDEODROME), a young paperboy weaves three twisted stories to distract her. In "Lot 249," a vengeful college student (Steve Buscemi - FARGO) resuscitates an evil mummy to teach unsuspecting student bodies (Julianne Moore - KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, Christian Slater - THE WIZARD, Mr. Robot) a lesson in terror. Then, "The Cat From Hell" is a furry black feline who cannot be killed … he may have nine lives, but those who cross his path are not so lucky. Finally, in "Lover's Vow," a stone gargoyle comes to life … to commit murder. In this classic cult favorite, fear comes in threes!

TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE is yet another film that has been rescued from Paramount's vaults by Scream Factory! Here's hoping this trend continues because I have a short-list of movies I'd love to see released over the next year (e.g. EXPLORERS and KING KONG '76). If you're ready to add TALES to your collection you can order now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY - it should cost between $25 - $28!

Cover art for MVD Rewind Collection's new Collector's Editio Blu-ray of MIKEY.

I've never seen MIKEY before (though I recall perusing the VHS cover a few times way back in the day) but I am super stoked to see that SPLIT SECOND (once a candidate for our WANTED ON BLU-RAY column) has finally made the leap to Blu-ray disc! Both films of these blasts from the past have built up a cult following, and gotten a lot of love from MVD Rewind Collection: MIKEY gets a brand new feature-length making-of documentary, while SPLIT SECOND gets a new 4K restoration plus hours of new cast & crew interviews! Want the full details of each? Then keep on reading Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: In the year 2008, the cops are better armed than before, but nothing has prepared them for this. Swift, sharp-clawed and deadly, something moves among them on the streets, in the alleyways, on the rooftops, tearing out human hearts and devouring them. Maverick cop ''Harley'' Stone (Rutger Hauer - BLADE RUNNER, BLIND FURY, THE HITCHER) lost his partner to the beast, and now it looks like his girlfriend Michelle (Kim Cattrall - MANNEQUIN, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA) is next on the killer's list.

Even in the future, there aren't guns big enough to stop the creature's deadly force, but Stone has no choice. Teamed with rookie detective Durkin (Alastair Duncan - THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), Stone must stalk the edge of his own sanity if he is to destroy the rampaging Evil on the outside and banish the very real demons within . . . STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 08/04/2020!

The B-Movie News Vault's Stock Your Vault Logo!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 08/04/2020 is Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of THE SOUL COLLECTOR.
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Yikes! It's almost been a month since my last post - sorry about that gang! After vacation I kind of took a little more time to recharge the ole batteries and catch up on some reading (currently polishing off Matt Ruff's Lovecraft Country) and movie/TV show watching (I just recently saw STARMAN for the first time in its entirety and blasted through HBO's The Outsider in three nights).

But between work (which has never stopped being crazy busy since the pandemic started) and the imminent birth of my son [Action] Jackson (a mere thirty-eight days away) I can't guarantee that I'll be updating regularly for a while. But hey, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. For now let us ignore our uncertain futures and focus on this week's new DVD & Blu-ray titles!

This is a relatively light week for new releases Vault Dwellers, so I would strongly consider saving what expendable income you have on what's coming later this month. But if you can't fight the urge to spend money, there are a few titles worth picking up. Shudder brought the remake of SATAN'S SLAVES to DVD & Blu-ray, Shout! Factory released SWALLOW and a limited edition Steelbook of PROMARE, and the first season of HBO's His Dark Materials arrived on both DVD & Blu-ray disc this week.

Arrow Academy gave TOTO THE HERO its Blu-ray debut, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics unleashed a trio of Blu-ray sets celebrating the films of Tony Curtis, Audie Murphy, and Carole Lombard. As the remainder of this week's release slate is made up of anime and direct-to-DVD junk, I settled on Scream Factory's lone release (on DVD & Blu-ray) of THE SOUL COLLECTOR for my pick of the week. This South African horror tale has gotten some decent reviews and sounds intriguing - sadly the disc is bare bones.

To see the full roster of this week's slim pickins, just continue scrolling!

On Vacation - Updates shall resume on July 28th!

The Vault Master is ON VACATION!
2020 has been a rough year gang, especially for those of us who were briefly hailed as "heroes" and "essential employees." My initial vacation plans were dashed due to the continued spread of Covid-19 (no Labatt Blue, hockey, maple syrup, moose, or Mounties for this Yankee hoser), but an alternative getaway has been planned, and in less than 24 hours, I will be gone. That of course means that there will be zero new content both here and at the main site.

However, in between afternoon naps, some light binge-drinking, and tasty meals, I'm sure I'll be able to make a few brief appearances over at the Vault's Official Facebook Page. I may even fire off a few tweets on Twitter, and share a few pics on Instagram.

So until I return, please be safe Vault Dwellers! Wear masks, wash your hands, stay away from other humans, and watch lots of aquatic-themed horror flicks, Summer Camp slasher movies, and eco-horror epics featuring man-eating sharks, grizzlies, warthogs, octopi, worms, crabs, slugs, and everything in between!

Get Scream Factory's New Collector's Edition Blu-ray of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE Today!

Mark Maddox's gorgeous cover art for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE!

While I already own Universal's 8-film HAMMER HORROR COLLECTION on Blu-ray (which contains KISS OF THE VAMPIRE), I have to admit that Scream Factory's Collector's Edition re-releases of the Hammer films contained in that set have become extremely tempting. With multiple bonus features, new HD transfers, and Mark Maddox's fantastic artwork on their covers, I find myself glancing at those new Hammer Blu-rays more and more frequently - it's only a matter of time before I finally cave and start adding them to my collection.

Speaking of which, Scream's new KISS OF THE VAMPIRE Blu-ray is out of this world! Featuring a new 2K scan of the film (which is featured in two different aspect ratios), new and archival extras, and an alternate TV edit of the movie, this is definitely a must-have release. I mean damn.... look at that cover art! It's just plain gorgeous!

Synopsis: Lost on the way to their honeymoon, a young couple stumbles upon a mysterious family of vampires and their unspeakably evil leader. When a wrong turn leaves newlyweds Marianne and Gerald Harcourt stranded in a remote Bavarian forest, they have no choice but to accept the hospitality of the hypnotic Dr. Ravna, distinguished lord of a nearby castle. Ravna uses his "children" to lure the newlyweds to his lair, and soon they are plunged into a nightmare of horror and deception from which there may be no escape. Their only hope is Professor Zimmer, who calls upon an ancient ritual in a desperate attempt to destroy the vampires and free Marianne from Ravna's power

While not one of my favorite Hammer titles, I still very much enjoy KISS OF THE VAMPIRE and am impressed by the amount of effort put into this release! With two cuts of the film, multiple commentaries, the TV edit, and new featurettes, I'd be more than willing to snap this up and place it proudly on the shelves with my other Scream Factory discs! KISS OF THE VAMPIRE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and should cost between $23 - $29! Get a copy right now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT!
