On June 2nd, Universal Gives JAWS a New 4K Release for its 45th Anniversary!

New cover art for Universal's 45th Anniversary 4K UHD of Spielberg's JAWS!
JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO STOP UPGRADING TITLES IN YOUR MOVIE COLLECTION: "JAWS" ARRIVES ON 4K ULTRA HD DISC!

I've owned JAWS in various formats over the decades (twice on VHS, twice on DVD, once on Blu-ray), played the video games, read the book (several times), reviewed and podcasted about Spielberg's iconic movie, and even took a fantastic "JAWS Tour" on Martha's Vineyard several years ago! I can quote JAWS almost verbatim, and have seen it in 35mm twice while chugging some Narragansett beer - needless to say, it is my favorite film of all time! Universal's last Blu-ray release of this Spielberg classic was a revelation - the film was color-corrected, cleaned up considerably, and given an amazing new audio track that made experiencing JAWS at home even more immersive! There was absolutely no way that this film could be improved upon.... UNTIL NOW!

Synopsis: When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, JAWS set the standard for edge-of-your-seat suspense, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the movie industry. Featuring an amazing cast, and an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, JAWS remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history!

ANCIENT SEA MONSTERS, JEWEL THIEVES, AND (NOT QUITE) DOMESTICATED CANNIBALS LURK WITHIN ARROW VIDEO'S LATEST BATCH OF BLU-RAYS!

Before you say anything, yes I know that Arrow also just dropped their SOLID METAL NIGHTMARES boxed set today featuring ten films by Shinya Tsukamoto that is loaded with extras! But after posting about Severin's gi-normous Al Adamson set last Sunday, I didn't have the strength to break down another large collector's set! Instead, I'll focus my efforts on Arrow's three other new titles this week, which include BLOOD TIDE (starring James Earl Jones, and produced by infamous ISLAND OF DEATH director Nico Mastorakis!), WHITE FIRE (a heist flick starring Robert Ginty and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson), and Lucky MeKee's THE WOMAN! To learn more about these new Arrow titles, just continue onward Vault Dwellers!

BLOOD TIDE (1982)

Meanwhile a couple, Neil and Sherry, arrive on the island in search of Neil's missing sister, Madeline.

Written and produced by Nico Mastorakis - the man behind such genre favourites as ISLAND OF DEATH, THE ZERO BOYS, THE WIND, and many others - and directed by Richard Jefferies (screenwriter of SCARECROWS and TRON: LEGACY), BLOOD TIDE is a suspense-filled creature feature surging with blood, nudity, and beachside aerobics!

Cover art for Arrow Video's new Blu-ray release of WHITE FIRE!

Bo s plan hits an unexpected snag with the arrival of smooth-talking badass Noah Barclay, played by Fred Williamson (FROM DUSK TIL DAWN). Noah s hunting for a missing prostitute and he thinks Bo and Inga hold the key to her disappearance!

Erotic filmmaker Jean-Marie Pallardy (EROTIC DIARY OF A LUMBERJACK) brings his kinky touch to high octane action in this infamous exploitation epic, complete with chainsaw mayhem, awkward brotherly love, and a very 80s theme song by the band Limelight!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray of ESCAPE FROM L.A.!
SCREAM FACTORY GIVES CARPENTER'S "ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK" SEQUEL A NEW 4K TRANSFER AND BONUS FEATURES!

While not all of John Carpenter's later works were up to snuff with the legendary films he shot in the 70s and 80s, I still have a soft spot for most of them, including the oft-maligned ESCAPE FROM L.A. Is it super cheesy? Absolutely. Is it a far cry from the classic original? Definitely. But dammit, despite the surfing, and the basketballing, and the hang-gliding.... it is still very much a Snake Plissken adventure at its core!

And now it's back in print and better than ever with Scream Factory's new Collector's Edition release, which contains a new 4K transfer of the film, plus numerous NEW cast & crew interviews! To learn more about this disc (which you're going to buy, even if you hate the movie) just continue reading fellow Carpenter fans!

Into the 9.6-quaked Los Angeles of 2013 comes Snake Plissken (Russell). His job: wade through L.A.'s ruined landmarks to retrieve a doomsday device. Don't miss the excitement as Snake surfs Wilshire Blvd., shoots hoops at the Coliseum, dive bombs the Happy Kingdom theme park, and mixes it up with a wild assortment of friends and foes including Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, George Corraface, Cliff Robertson and Pam Grier. ESCAPE FROM L.A. is a "go-for-broke action extravaganza" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)!

On June 2nd, You Can Own the (Nearly) Complete Cinematic Works of Al Adamson!

A front glimpse of Severin Film's massive 32-film AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION Blu-ray set!
SEVERIN FILMS ASTOUNDS COLLECTORS WITH THEIR NEW BOXED SET OF AL ADAMSON FLICKS!

Note: There is an issue with Disc #8 in this set - Severin Films is working hard to get replacement discs out to those of you who already purchased this!

2020 has been an awful year: We've got widening political divides, a global pandemic, and have lost so many great artists & entertainers. And yet, this has been one of the most amazing years as far as Blu-ray releases are concerned. Criterion is bringing us an amazing BRUCE LEE COLLECTION, Arrow Video is bringing us all of the GAMERA films in one set, and then there's Severin Films' incredible 32-film AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION, which not only boasts (almost) the entire directorial filmography of the late exploitation filmmaker, but a feature-length documentary about his career plus numerous bonus features!

If you ordered from SEVERIN FILMS directly, you probably already have your set (like I do!) but for those of you who haven't ordered yet (likely because of its pricing), let's dig into this set and see if I can tempt you!

About this Set: Severin Films is proud to present the most comprehensive Blu-ray box set ever dedicated to the works of a single genre filmmaker with Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection, featuring 31 remastered Adamson films on 14 discs, plus trailers, audio commentaries, a 126-page book, the 2019 documentary feature BLOOD & FLESH: THE REEL LIFE & GHASTLY DEATH OF AL ADAMSON and more. Exhaustively compiled for the first time ever, Adamson’s ouvre spans a wild beyond belief world of bloody brains, vicious cowboys, naughty nurses, decrepit actors, sexy stewardesses, mad scientists, brutal bikers, Blaxploitation mayhem, kung fu killers and “scenes so SICK the Movies could never show them before!”

The life and career of B-movie maverick Adamson – known for such low budget classics as SATAN’S SADISTS, DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN and THE NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES (as well as his own grisly 1995 murder) – reveals perhaps the most bizarre career in Hollywood history!

From his early years as the son of a silent screen cowboy, through the production of some 30 lurid low budget pictures including SATAN'S SADISTS, DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN and THE NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES, to his grisly demise, the Al Adamson story remains wild beyond belief in!

THE FEMALE BUNCH (1971): After a string of bad times with men, Sandy tries to kill herself. Co-waitress Libby saves her and takes her to meet some female friends of hers who live on a ranch in the desert. Grace, the leader of the gang, puts Sandy through her initiation and they get on with the real job of running drugs across the Mexican border, hassling poor farmers, taking any man they please, and generally raising a little hell. Congratulations! You made it to the bottom! This limited edition set from Severin Films is a real monster isn't it?! It basically has everything Al Adamson ever directed - All it's missing an X-Rated Western called LASH OF LUST, a film Adamson co-directed called DOOMSDAY VOYAGE, the new footage he shot for 1969's THE BEDROOM, and the intros and conclusions to 1982's CHUCK CONNORS' GREAT WESTERN THEATRE! Even with those omissions, this is probably the most comprehensive boxed set devoted to a film director that I have ever seen!

Severin Films is currently selling AL ADAMSON: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION for $170 (plus tax & shipping) on their site, and there are still some copies in stock! Otherwise, you'll have to pay more (approximately $235) and wait until Tuesday, June 2nd to procure a copy from other retailers, such as AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, and DIABOLIK DVD! I know this is a big decision to make as a collector gang, but don't wait too long to make up your mind, because this set is going to go fast! And once it's gone - IT IS GONE!

On May 26th, It's Time To Play.... With DOLLY DEAREST!

Cover art for Vinegar Syndrome's new Blu-ray release of DOLLY DEAREST!
VINEGAR SYNDROME BRINGS THIS LONG-LOST CULT CLASSIC TO BLU-RAY FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH A NEW 2K RESTORATION!

Note: You can currently order this title directly from Vinegar Syndrome right now during their HALFWAY TO BLACK FRIDAY SALE, which ends on Monday (05/25/2020) at midnight.

DOLLY DEAREST is a film that I have not seen in a very long time. It used to make its rounds on USA Network (along with other classics like SPOOKIES), and up until recently, I wasn't sure if it was ever going to get a legit Blu-ray release. But never say never Vault Dwellers, because Vinegar Syndrome has plucked this post-CHILD'S PLAY killer doll flick from obscurity, given it a 2K restoration, and unleashed it upon the world! Let's take a closer look at this VinSyn disc, shall we gang?

Synopsis: American family Elliot and Marilyn Wade, along with their young children Jessica and Jimmy, have just relocated to Mexico, where Elliot has taken over a doll factory. As they settle into their fresh surroundings, Jessica forms a special bond with her new doll, spending hours with it in her large playhouse. But soon, her mother and older brother sense that something isn't quite right with the sweetly faced toy. It's not long before strange and frightening events start to occur, and members of the household begin turning up dead in a series of apparent 'accidents’.

The sole horror feature directed by veteran exploitation crew-woman and actress, Maria Lease, and produced by Dan Cady (GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE), DOLLY DEAREST, takes a thematic nod from CHILD'S PLAY while upping the weirdness. Starring Denise Crosby (PET SEMATARY), Sam Bottoms (APOCALYPSE NOW), and featuring a memorable supporting performance from Rip Torn (MEN IN BLACK), Vinegar Syndrome brings this early 90s cult favorite to Blu-ray for the very first time!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 94 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! 2K restoration made from from a 35mm interpositive!
  • Playing With Dolls - An interview with lead actress Denise Crosby!
  • Dressing the Part - An interview with actor Ed Gale!
  • Reversible cover artwork!
  • Exclusive Limited Edition Slipcover: Embossed slipcover designed by Earl Kessler Jr. is limited to 4,000 copies and only available through VinegarSyndrome.com!
DOLLY DEAREST's official street date is Tuesday, May 26th and it should cost between $20 - $25! If you'd like to add it to your collection, either out of nostalgia or curiosity, order a copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from VINEGAR SYNDROME (especially if you're a fan of slipcovers - VinSyn's are the best!)!

A Trio of Dark Force Entertainment Titles Come to Blu-ray Disc on May 26th!

Cover art for Dark Force Entertainment's Blu-ray release of ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE!
SWORDS, SANDALS, SPIDER CULTS, RAPEY ALIENS, FULCI ZOMBIES, AND A KNIFE-WIELDING MANIAC POPULATE DARK FORCE ENTERTAINMENT'S LATEST RELEASES!

In a surprising plot-twist, numerous Dark Force Entertainment titles are now being distributed through MVD! The first batch of these "Collector's Edition" titles includes ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE, BREEDERS, and a Drive-In Double Feature of THE GATES OF HELL and PSYCHO FROM TEXAS! As far as I can tell, all three releases are pretty light on extras, but do come with collectible slipcovers! Let's take a closer look at these new Dark Force titles Vault Dwellers!

ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE (1982)

Synopsis: The son of Torren learns of his heritage, goes to avenge the deaths of his fellow villagers, and rescue his sister/love interest from the evil Dakkar and his spider cult. Ator battles giant spiders, swordsmen cloaked in shadow, re-animated dead warriors, and horribly hideous witches! ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE was directed by Joe D'Amato and stars Miles O'Keeffe, Sabrina Siani, Dakar, Laura Gemser, and Edmund Purdom, with a soundtrack by Carlo Maria Cordio (SHOCKING DARK).

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 98 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • Trailers for THE DEAD PIT, THE GATES OF HELL, and MIRROR MIRROR.
Dark Force Entertainment's ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE Blu-ray is disappointingly devoid of any Ator-related extras, so it's a hard sell for me to spend between $22 - $35 for this disc. But if you're a big fan of classic 80s sword & sorcery flicks, then by all means pick up a copy from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from MVD!

Cover art for Dark Force Entertainment's Blu-ray of BREEDERS (1997)!
BREEDERS (1997)

Synopsis: It's an invasion of the most personal and terrifying kind. When a meteorite crash lands onto a Boston college campus and an alien beast is released, only one man understands its mission to mate. From the depths of an all girls college, the grotesque monster stalks his prey in a cat-and-mouse chase until the final conflict where only one species can survive!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 98 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • Trailers for THE DEAD PIT, THE GATES OF HELL, MIRROR MIRROR, and POINT DOOM.
Well there's not too much to get excited for about BREEDERS, other than the fact that it has an all-new HD remaster and has been fully color-corrected! If horny aliens are your bag, you may want to pick up BREEDERS, which arrives at retailers on Tuesday, May 26th and should cost between $20 - $30! Order a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or direct from DARK FORCE ENTERTAINMENT or MVD!

Cover art for Dark Force Entertainment's Double Feature of THE GATES OF HELL & PSYCHO FROM TEXAS!
DRIVE-IN DOUBLE FEATURE #6: THE GATES OF HELL (1980) & PSYCHO FROM TEXAS (1972)

Synopses: In Lucio Fulci's THE GATES OF HELL (aka CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD), a reporter and a psychic race to close said Gates of Hell after the suicide of a clergyman caused them to open, allowing the dead to rise from their graves.

PSYCHO FROM TEXAS follows a drifter/hitman that is hired by a local businessman to kidnap an oil baron. The hitman had been reared in squalor, suffering the abuses of his whoring mama. When the baron escapes his assistant must chase him while the hitman takes care of a few loose ends.

Disc Specs:
THE GATES OF HELL
Rated R | Color | 93 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono

PSYCHO FROM TEXAS
Rated R | Color | 90 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono

Extras:
  •  NEW! THE GATES OF HELL HD master created from a 35mm US theatrical print that has "rich color and some lines and wear" - PSYCHO FROM TEXAS HD master created from only available source masters with extensive scene by scene color correction!
  • Watch films in Dark Force Entertainment’s exclusive ‘Drive-In Mode’ featuring Cult Director Damon Packard!
While Blue Underground already has a solid Blu-ray release (and likely a future 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the works) for THE GATES OF HELL, to my knowledge this is the first time PSYCHO FROM TEXAS is appearing on the Blu-ray format! This double-feature from Dark Force will also be released on May 29th, and should cost between $24 - $40! Order a copy right now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from MVD!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 05/19/2020!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 05/19/2020 is Scream Factory's THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Welcome to yet another edition of STOCK YOUR VAULT gang! This week's release slate is pretty light (Next week? Not so much.), but as is always the case, there are some titles you may want to add to your ever-growing personal movie collections!

I believe TOP GUN: MAVERICK was initially coming to theaters this week or next, which is why today we get THREE Tom Cruise flicks on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray: TOP GUN, DAYS OF THUNDER, and 2005's WAR OF THE WORLDS remake! Speaking of 4K, THE BLUES BROTHERS just debuted on the format today as well!

Shout! Factory has a couple of new titles out today including Mario Bava's DANGER: DIABOLIK and a new animated feature called PROMARE (which is available in standard and Limited Steelbook editions), Scorpion Releasing gives us the obscure 80s comedy PRETTY SMART on both DVD & Blu-ray, and MANDY's Steelbook release (wish has been pushed back for weeks) is finally here!

BRAHMS: THE BOY II and the new live-action SONIC THE HEDGEHOG arrived on DVD & Blu-ray today, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics just dropped a bunch of new titles, including LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, 1933's ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE PINK PANTHER CLASSIC CARTOON COLLECTION, THE NIGHT MY NUMBER CAME UP, and THE LONG AND THE SHORT AND THE TALL (aka JUNGLE FIGHTERS). But as impressive as that is, it is Scream Factory that wins out this week!

Scream's Collector's Edition Blu-ray of THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN is now available and it is a beautiful release! The film has received a new 4K transfer so it should look better than the previous Universal release, plus the disc is loaded with bonus features, including the TV edit of film, a new audio commentary, new cast & crew interviews, gorgeous cover art by artist Mark Maddox, and MORE!

There are still other releases I haven't given shout-outs too this week, so be sure to scroll down to see the full roster of new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HD discs Vault Dwellers!
