Arrow Video Satisfies Your Appetite for Spaghetti Westerns with THE COMPLETE SARTANA Collection!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST was the film that got me hooked on Spaghetti Westerns. Soon after that I watched Sergio Leone's MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY, THE SABATA TRILOGY, DJANGO, the TRINITY films (featuring Terrence Hill and Bud Court), and various others from the sub-genre. But I still have yet to watch a single Sartana flick, which makes this set a definite must-own for yours truly! But if you want it, you better act fast because this set is limited to 2,500 copies!

About The Complete Sartana: Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name spawned imitations, variations and shameless rip-offs keen to emulate his success at the box office. Within months of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS’ release, Giuliano Gemma was playing RINGO, who was then followed by Franco Nero’s DJANGO, Tony Anthony’s THE STRANGER, and Gianni Garko’s SARTANA – each providing their own twist on the Eastwood antihero, and each of them then subject to their own spate of unofficial sequels, spoofs and cash-ins.

Sartana tapped into more than just his Spaghetti Western predecessors – a mysterious figure, he has a spectral quality, aided by his Count Dracula-like cloak which also nods towards comic strip figure Mandrake the Magician, with whom he shares he shares a penchant for card tricks. He takes pride in his appearance unlike the Eastwood’s dusty wanderer or Nero’s mud-caked drifter. And there’s a dose of James Bond too in his fondness for gadgetry and the droll sense of humor.

Unsurprisingly, this unique figure in the genre was treated to four official follow-ups. THE COMPLETE SARTANA collects all five films, presented here in brand-new restorations: IF YOU MEET SARTANA... PRAY FOR YOUR DEATH, I AM SARTANA YOUR ANGEL OF DEATH, HAVE A GOOD FUNERAL MY FRIEND... SARTANA WILL PAY, LIGHT THE FUSE... SARTANA IS COMING, and SARTANA'S HERE... TRADE YOUR PISTOL FOR A COFFIN, in which George Hilton replaced Garko in the lead role.

Blaxploitation Fans Rejoice: Warner Archive Collection Has Released SUPER FLY on Blu-ray!

Seeing as how the SUPERFLY remake barely made its budget back, and was disliked my most moviegoers and critics, at least we got something good out of it: The original SUPER FLY on Blu-ray! I have yet to watch this particular Blaxploitation title (mainly because I've only dabbled in the sub-genre), but it once I get around to it, I'm gonna buy it on Blu-ray!

Synopsis: Priest is a prince of the streets, a charismatic businessman who wants out of cocaine-dealing. But a mysterious kingpin doesn’t want Priest to change his ways. And that triggers murder, revenge and double-crosses that push Priest into a corner — and heat the neighborhood to flash point.

Super Fly is one of the more enduring streetwise films of its era, due to the dynamic central performance of Ron O’Neal (RED DAWN, ORIGINAL GANGSTAS), the sizzling score by Curtis Mayfield, and the gritty direction of the late Gordon Parks, Jr. (THREE THE HARD WAY, AARON LOVES ANGELA). SUPER FLY is super entertainment with an indelible message. It’s life on the edge, put together by talents who know just how sharp it can get.

I'm sort of an unofficial fan of Phillipe Mora as I own copies of THE BEAST WITHIN, THE HOWLING II: YOUR SISTER IS A WEREWOLF, THE HOWLING III: THE MARSUPIALS, and THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE! And now it appears that I must add A BREED APART to my "Mora Collection" because it sounds pretty awesome!

When an adventurer (Powers Boothe - SOUTHERN COMFORT, SIN CITY) dares to steal that secret, Malden's old flame (Kathleen Turner - BODY HEAT, SERIAL MOM) is the only one that can stop the savage war that is about to rage. Supernatural Indie Chiller THE NURSERY Now Available to Stream Instantly!

THE NURSERY seems like the type of film I'd normally avoid, if only because I'm not big on haunting/possession flicks (though there are various exceptions such as HOUSE, BURNT OFFERINGS, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, and THE CHANGELING). Essentially I'm just more of a mutants and monsters kind of guy!

That being said, every now and again I dip a toe back into the sub-genre so THE NURSERY might be a good fit. I dig the poster art, and I'm always down for helping out up and coming filmmakers when I can, so I'm ready to give it a chance! Let's take a closer look at this one Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: From filmmakers Christopher A. Micklos and Jay Sapiro comes the story of a young woman whose run-of-the-mill Saturday night quickly turns into a confrontation with unspeakable horror!

When Ranae, a college student babysits for a family with a tragic history, she finds herself stalked by a sinister presence and haunted by ghosts from her own past. Soon, she and her friends must confront the angry, evil spirit hunting them down one-by-one on a deliberate march towards its ultimate prey.

THE NURSERY stars Emmaline Friederichs, Madeline Conway, and Carly Rae James Sauer, and is currently available on VOD from Uncork’d Entertainment. Stream it instantly now, or wait until August 7th to pick up the DVD!

Scream Factory Brings ALIEN PREDATORS and NIGHT OF THE LEPUS to Blu-ray on June 19th!

Talk about two must-own titles! NIGHT OF THE LEPUS has long been a guilty pleasure of mine with its ridiculous premise and an incredible cast! ALIEN PREDATORS (aka THE FALLING) is also a film I am quite familiar with as I used to own it on VHS way back in the day.

Interestingly enough, said VHS tape was apparently used as evidence by my Vault Momma in a bitter custody battle over yours truly with her ex-husband! (True story!) Apparently Deran Sarafian's Spanish-American co-production helped tip the scales! (Crazy no?) It's been a long time since I've seen either one of these films, so I definitely have my heart set on picking these titles up at some point! Let's take a closer look at them shall we?

Synopsis: When NASA's Skylab fell to Earth the threat was over ... but five years later the horror is just beginning! Three American teens on a European holiday are about to experience their worst nightmare. They are about to be trapped in a quaint Spanish town infested with a parasitic alien virus that drives the local townspeople insane and turns them into horrible mutants! The three teens must run for their lives ... but is there really anywhere to hide? This chilling sci-fi film stars Dennis Christopher (BREAKING AWAY, FADE TO BLACK) Martin Hewitt (ENDLESS LOVE, TWO MOON JUNCTION), and Lynn-Holly Johnson (ICE CASTLES, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY).

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 90 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)

  • NEW! Audio Commentary With Director Deran Sarafian!
  • Theatrical Trailer
ALIEN PREDATORS makes its Blu-ray debut on Tuesday, June 19th and will cost between $18 - $23. (The commentary is probably worth the price of admission alone!) You can order yourself a copy of this once (mostly) forgotten film now at AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

Synopsis: There was no limit to the horror ... no end to the NIGHT OF THE LEPUS! A hormone intended to alter the breeding cycle of rabbits overrunning Arizona ranchlands instead turns them into flesh-eating, 150-pound monsters in NIGHT OF THE LEPUS!

Stuart Whitman (EATEN ALIVE), Janet Leigh (PSYCHO), Rory Calhoun (MOTEL HELL) and DeForest Kelley (Star Trek) are among the intrepid humans facing off against the behemoth bunnies, using guns, flames, dynamite and anything else in their grasp to battle their oversized, hungry tormentors.

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 90 minutes | Region A

  • NEW! 2K Scan From The Original Film Elements!

Those giant bunnies will look twice as nice in 2K, and I guarantee that Lee Gambin's audio commentary will be a non-stop stream of knowledge that will truly enlighten you about NIGHT OF THE LEPUS! With JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM about to hit theaters, I've been feeling nostalgic for the dinosaur films of my youth. During my early childhood, I became enamored with dinosaurs, which made me the "weird kid" throughout grade (and middle) school! I read books about prehistoric creatures, drew pictures of them, and naturally watched cartoons AND movies featuring those "terrible lizards." I just couldn't get enough!

From KING KONG and DINOSAURUS! to BABY: SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND and THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER, I watched anything and everything that contained any sort of prehistoric fauna. And out of those dozens of films, there's one in particular that left a lasting impression to this day: THE LAST DINOSAUR!

Synopsis: During a routine mission aboard "The Polar Borer," an exploratory laser-drill used in seeking oil reserves under the polar ice caps, the crew members made a history-shattering discovery: There is a prehistoric world beneath the Earth's crust, teeming with life! A geologist named Chuck Wade (Steven Keats) is the sole survivor of the expedition, and tells the world during a press conference that a T-Rex ate the rest of his crew!

Realizing that a Tyrannosaurus head would be one hell of a trophy to hang on his wall, Thrust puts together a new expedition made up of Chuck, a Massai tracker named Bunta (Luther Rackley), Dr. Kawamoto (Tetsu Nakamura), and a Pullitzer Prize-winning photographer named Frankie Banks (Joan Van Ark) who secures herself a spot on the trip by getting "Thrusted." With his team assembled, Maston leads them underground to bag himself a T-Rex!

And here I always thought Denver was the Last Dinosaur...

Naturally things do not go well for the would-be hunters as they soon find themselves way in over their heads. Their intended quarry turns out to be nigh indestructible, and after losing a few colleagues, Thrust takes things personally! Chuck and Frankie try to talk some sense into the vengeance-fueled hunter,  but he'll not hear of any plans to escape because he is on a mad mission to kill the Tyrannosaurus by any means necessary!

THE LAST DINOSAUR is the result of an odd pairing of Tsuburaya Productions, known for their tokusatsu shows (primarily Ultraman) and Rankin/Bass, best known for all of those claymation Christmas specials you watch every holiday season! Together they crafted a rather gloomy adventure tale with laughable suitmation dinosaurs and a somewhat catchy theme song. While it isn't a great movie by any stretch, I have fond memories of watching this cult oddity in my youth and would love to see it given a little TLC for a change!

Availability: After failing to find a distributor, THE LAST DINOSAUR premiered on ABC on February 11, 1977 in a truncated 95-minute cut. After that, it would be released on VHS by various distributors in the 1990s, before finally being released on (Region Free!) DVD by The Warner Archive Collection back on May 9, 2011. It has the same uncut version of the film that Toho released on DVD two years earlier, but lacks any special features.

Current Rights Holder: Obviously Warner Bros. owns the U.S. rights at the moment (hence the DVD release I just mentioned). However, Shout! Factory has been dipping into the Warner vaults as of late (as evidenced by several of their recent and upcoming Scream! Factory titles) so I wouldn't be shocked if they did a nice little release of this one down the road. Only time will tell I suppose.

Normal people watching this scene: "Which dinosaur will win?!"
Me watching this scene: "The cattle there must be ENORMOUS!"

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • Both cuts of the film, remastered in 2K!
  • Audio commentary by a kaiju film expert/historian, such as August Ragone.
  • Interviews with any surviving cast members or crew. From what I've seen Joan Van Ark and Luther Rackley seem to still be alive. I'm not sure if screenwriter William Overgard is still around, but it'd be great to hear about his involvement with this film, as well as THE BERMUDA DEPTHS, and his stint as a writer on Thundercats
  • An interview with Producer Jules Bass (of Rankin/Bass).
  • Poster & Stills gallery (w/ theme song on a loop)
  • The supplemental materials from the Toho disc (featuring visual-effects supervisor Kazuo Sagawa) with English subtitles.
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
I'm not sure if THE LAST DINOSAUR has built up enough of a cult following for any label to bother giving it a Blu-ray release, but we can only hope! If you also want this odd-ball dinosaur epic in HD, then let the powers that be at The Warner Archive Collection know by bugging them on social media. Hit them up on Facebook and/or Twitter, and maybe bother Shout! Factory on Facebook as well, just to let them know some of us are interested in a Blu-ray release for this title!

Scream Factory Brings THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE to Blu-ray at the End of June!

While I haven't seen THE CAT PEOPLE (or its remake), it has been on my radar for some time. And though my taste in film gravitates towards cinema from the 70s and 80s, I do enjoy going further back and watching the occasional black & white classic from time to time. (Which is why I'm SUPER excited for Universal's upcoming Blu-ray set that features all thirty of their classic monster movies!) That being said, I best get to watching the original CAT PEOPLE so I can dive into this sequel, which is making its Blu-ray debut in less than two weeks!

Synopsis: Filled with "wonderful atmosphere [and] fine, moody fantasy" (Leonard Maltin), this continuation of 1942's CAT PEOPLE follows Oliver Reed (Kent Smith), now remarried, living in idyllic Tarrytown, New York, and the father of six-year-old Amy. When Amy becomes withdrawn and speaks of consorting with a new "friend," Oliver worries that she may be under the influence of the spirit of his first wife. Is it just Amy's imagination that has manifested the enigmatic Irena (Simone Simon), who long believed herself to be descended from a race of Cat People?

Directors Gunther V. Fritsch and Robert Wise (making his directorial debut), co-helmed a gothic-laced mix of fantasy and fright so astute it was used in college psychology classes. And producer Val Lewton, given small budgets and lurid, pre-tested film titles by RKO, worked with rising filmmakers to emphasize the fear of the unseen, and turn meager resources into momentous works of psychological terror.

Kino Cinema Classics Gives JACK THE GIANT KILLER A Much-Needed Upgrade!

Long before it had the honor of appearing on Rifftrax Live, I had been a long-time fan of JACK THE GIANT KILLER! I first watched this film on TV at a young age and was blown away by the stop-motion effects (this is just BEFORE I discovered the films of Ray Harryhausen) and the number of creatures the film's hero has to face. Needless to say, it became an instant favorite of yours truly! And now it seems that the time is right to revisit this blast from my past now that it has made the leap to Blu-ray!

Synopsis: Forget about beanstalks. This "vivid fairy tale" (LA Herald-Examiner) brilliantly re-imagines the beloved fable as a rugged adventure that delights with "vigorous acting and excellent trick effects" (Halliwell's Film and Video Guide)! Reuniting the director and stars Kerwin Mathews and Torin Thatcher (from THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD), this visual treat is a journey you'll want to take again and again!

Farm boy Jack heroically rescues Princess Elaine from sorcerer Pendragon by slaying his bloodthirsty giant. But when Pendragon uses his evil powers to bewitch and imprison Elaine in his enchanted fortress, Jack must cross the ocean to brave dragons, two headed ogres, and an army of ghouls to save his lady love!

THE JURASSIC GAMES Now Available on VOD - Coming to DVD & Blu-ray on July 3rd!

When I first saw the press release for THE JURASSIC GAMES I rolled my eyes, assuming that this was just another cash-in from the folks at The Asylum. However, my tune immediately changed when I discovered that this movie was directed by Ryan Bellgardt, the man behind the brilliantly insane indie time-travel Horror-Comedy ARMY OF FRANKENSTEINS. I adore Bellgardt's ARMY, so I am ready and willing to give THE JURASSIC GAMES a look now that it is available to stream instantly!

Synopsis: Every year, ten of the world’s most lethal Death Row criminals are chosen to compete for their freedom in THE JURASSIC GAMES, a television show where contestants must survive against a variety of ferocious dinosaurs. The players all die gruesomely in the game zone except for one, the last one standing, the winner, who is granted not only his/her freedom, but fame and fortune! Survive the dinosaurs. Survive each other. Survive… THE JURASSIC GAMES.

THE JURASSIC GAMES is the third film from Emmy Award-winning director Ryan Bellgardt (GREMLIN, ARMY OF FRANKENSTEINS), and stars Ryan Merriman (FINAL DESTINATION 3) and Perrey Reeves (Entourage, CHILD'S PLAY 3). The film imagines a world set in the near future where convicts are chosen to compete in the ultimate virtual reality game show that pits its players against dinosaurs and each other. However, there is a catch: If you die in the virtual game, you also die in the real world!

And for Anthony Tucker (Adam Hampton), survival is his one chance to be reunited with his children after having been wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his wife. As the devious The Host continues adding improbable challenges, the characters will find the odds stacked against them as only one victor can emerge as winner and reclaim their freedom.

ROBOT NINJA is Coming to Blu-ray in Late 2018!

Talk about a blast from my past! I came across ROBOT NINJA during my early teen years at a VHS liquidation outlet and bought it solely based upon the cover art. While I didn't end up loving it like I had hoped, the movie certainly left an impression on me.

At least fifteen years have passed since I've seen ROBOT NINJA, so you can imagine my surprise after receiving an e-mail touting its impending return to home video! And now, after a relatively successful IndieGoGo campaign, we're getting this film in a 2-Disc Ultimate Edition that features a 2K restoration, lots of extras, and a soundtrack CD! For the full details of this upcoming release, read onward Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Leonard Miller (Michael Todd - THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, LURKING FEAR) is a frustrated artist. His publisher, his agent... everyone is out to capitalize on the blooming success of Robot Ninja, the greatest costumed superhero since Batman! One night, Miller witnesses the brutal rape and murder of a young couple at the hands of ruthless thugs. He cries out for revenge! With the help of an inventor friend, Dr. Goodknight (Bogdan Pecic - THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, ZOMBIE COP), Miller becomes the Robot Ninja, stalking the dark streets of Ridgway, intent on spilling some blood!

The only thing standing in his way is Sanchez (Maria Marcovic - THE DEAD NEXT DOOR) and her band of villains. Relentlessly, Miller pursues his prey, watching the bodies pile up before him. The only thing stopping him is Goodknight, and a frustrated local cop that’s always just one step behind him. Robot Ninja slashes, stabs, guts, pokes and jabs his way through body after body until his final confrontation with head baddie Sanchez. You’ll never see comic books the same way again!

Scream Factory Resurrects NINJA III: THE DOMINATION in a NEW Collector's Edition Blu-ray!

One of the most challenging aspects of being a film collector is deciding whether or not to upgrade when a new edition comes out. I often manage to fight the urge to purchase yet another copy of a film I already own and have watched multiple times, but this is one of those releases that give me pause and causes an internal struggle between my adult self and my inner man-child. Boasting new artwork, new extras, and (amazingly) an all new 4K transfer... I am definitely close to re-adding this title to my collection!

Synopsis: ONLY A NINJA CAN KILL A NINJA! Aerobic instructor Christie Ryder (Lucinda Dickey - BREAKIN', BREAKIN' 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO) becomes possessed by the spirit of an evil ninja when she comes to his aid after he was shot down. Dominated by the killer's vicious and relentless rage, she sets out to brutally attack his enemies.

Her boyfriend, confused by Christie's changing personality and afraid that he might be her next victim, enlists the help of Yamada (Shô Kosugi - ENTER THE NINJA, REVENGE OF THE NINJA). In a life-threatening exorcism and ultimate fight to the death, Yamada proves that he is Christie's only chance for survival.

MVD Rewind Collection Brings Us Killer Bigfeet and Classic Van Dammage in mid-June!

Truth be told, I've never seen ABOMINABLE before, but it looks like it's a lot of fun! LIONHEART on the other hand I have seen an unhealthy number of times, as it's probably  my third favorite JCVD flick after BLOODSPORT and KICKBOXER. Now both films have been released in glorious high-definition with loads of cool features! If you're a fan of killer Sasquatches and illegal underground fighting rings, you'll want to pick up both of these fantastic Blu-ray/DVD combo sets!

Synopsis: It has been sighted 42,000 times in 68 countries, a vicious creature of myth and legend called Sasquatch, Yeti, and perhaps most infamously, Bigfoot. It's been hunted for years, but what happens when it decides to hunt us?

After recovering from a horrific accident, paraplegic Preston Rogers (Matt McCoy) moves back into the remote cabin where he and his now-deceased wife once lived. When his new neighbor Karen, is attacked by a gigantic creature, Rogers contacts the local authorities. But after the police and those around him dismiss Rogers as a delusional widower, he sets out to stop the abominable creature himself.

Featuring an all-star cast that includes Matt McCoy (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, HBO's Silicon Valley) Jeffrey Combs (RE-ANIMATOR, THE FRIGHTENERS), Paul Gleason (THE BREAKFAST CLUB, DIE HARD), Rex Linn (DJANGO UNCHAINED, A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST), Haley Joel (TONY N' TINA'S WEDDING), Phil Morris (Seinfeld, BLACK DYNAMITE), Dee Wallace (E.T., CUJO), Tiffany Shepis (TALES OF HALLOWEEN, VICTOR CROWLEY) and Lance Henriksen (ALIENS, HARD TARGET) in this wild and gruesome throwback horror shocker that Fangoria called ''The best serious fright film ever made about Bigfoot!''

Synopsis: Jean-Claude Van Damme (BLACK EAGLE, HARD TARGET) stars as a soldier drawn into the world of modern-day gladiators fighting for the amusement of the rich in this fast moving action thriller co-written by Van Damme himself!

Fleeing from two of the Legion's security force who have orders to bring him back at any cost, Lyon reluctantly turns to the illegal, bare-knuckles underground fighting circuit to raise the money he needs to help his brother's family.
