The MVD Rewind Collection Continues to Impress With Their New Special Edition Blu-ray of BLACK EAGLE!

Thus far, I've missed out on all three of MVD Rewind's inaugural releases (DOA: A RIGHT OF PASSAGE, ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES, and now BLACK EAGLE), but plan on catching up when I get some expendable income. To be honest, I've never seen BLACK EAGLE (shocking as I am an unabashed lover of all things Van Damme), so I'm eager to scope out this disc in the near future!

Synopsis: After an F-11 gets shot down over the Mediterranean Sea, The U.S. government cannot afford to lose the top-secret laser tracking device that was on board. But unfortunately, the KGB team lead by the infamous Andrei (Jean-Claude Van Damme, BLOODSPORT, LIONHEART, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER) are beating the CIA in the race to find it.

The CIA has no choice but to call in their best man, master martial-artist Ken Tani (Sho Kosugi, ENTER THE NINJA, REVENGE OF THE NINJA), code name… BLACK EAGLE. In response, the KGB resorts to an all-out war, with powerful Andrei matching Ken blow for blow. From legendary action director Eric Karson (THE OCTAGON), BLACK EAGLE also stars Doran Clark (THE WARRIORS), Bruce French (JURASSIC PARK III), and William Bassett (HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES).

Jean-Claude Van Damme prepares to high-five his opponent.

Arrow Video's Limited Edition Blu-ray of BASKET CASE is the Definitive Release We've Been Waiting For!

Something Weird Video released a pretty solid Blu-ray of BASKET CASE back in 2011, and I think we all assumed that it was the best release the film would ever have. Seven years later, Arrow Video has come along and spoiled us rotten with an all new 4K transfer of BASKET CASE, and a slew of new extras!

Synopsis: THE TENANT IN ROOM 7 IS VERY SMALL, VERY TWISTED, AND VERY MAD. The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter (BRAIN DAMAGE, FRANKENHOOKER), 1982's BASKET CASE is perhaps his most revered - a riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck) is a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed, fleshy lump whom he carries around in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at the seedy Hotel Broslin, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation. But tensions flare up when Duane starts spending time with a pretty blonde secretary, and Belial's homicidal tendencies reach bloody new extremes.

Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where the movie would become a staple of the infamous 42nd Street grindhouse circuit), BASKET CASE has clawed its way from its humble origins to become one of the most celebrated cult movies of all time.

The current look on every BASKET CASE fans' face right now!

Supercomputers Contemplate Humanity's Fate in COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT!

Well Vault Dwellers, here's another film I have yet to see. Based upon the novel by D.F. Jones, and directed by Joseph (JAWS: THE REVENGE) Sargent, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT is a cautionary tale that warns of the dangers of artificial intelligence! One definitely has to wonder if this film (and it's source material) helped inspire THE TERMINATOR (particularly "Skynet") which was released fourteen years later!

Synopsis: The ultimate computer creates the ultimate terror in this chillingly real sci-fi suspense thriller! When electronics genius Charles Forbin (Eric Braeden) creates a massive computer complex that is capable of independently regulating the national defense of the United States, it appears that no enemy will ever be able to penetrate its sovereign borders.

But such a promising thought turns into a stunning nightmare when it's discovered the Russians have built an equally sophisticated computer and that these two "doomsday machines" have linked, sharing classified information and top secrets. Desperately, Forbin and his Soviet counterparts try to stop the all-knowing "monster" computers from seizing command of the world's nuclear missile stockpiles.

Travel back to a time when computers filled entire rooms and buildings!

Tristan Clay's RED EYE is Now Available on All Digital Platforms!

Slasher cinema is still alive and well, as evidenced by RED EYE. Featuring a masked backwoods killer, Tristan Clay's film looks to keep the torch burning for a sub-genre that peaked back in the 80s. RED EYE is currently available on iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, and Xbox Live!

Synopsis: There's a legend about a violent, deranged masked murderer, who dwells in the backwoods of Black Creek, West Virginia. Gage Barker (Scott King), a young man who grew up on the tales of "Red Eye" as a kid, learns that there could be some truth behind these folk tales.

With a group of his friends and his camera equipment in tow, Gage hikes into the woods to seek out the legendary killer, or prove that he is nothing more than a myth. But the would-be documentary filmmakers soon learn that they should have left well enough alone!

Directed by Tristan Clay, RED EYE stars Destinie Orndoff, Scott King, Heather Dorff and Hayden Wilberger. The film was nominated for “Best Feature,” “Best Director,” “Best Producer,” “Best Actress (Heather Dorff),” “Best Actor (Scott King),” and “Best SPFX” at the San Antonio Horrific Film Fest (2017)!

Todd "Killer" Wolfson's First Feature Film is Going to be BATSH!T Insane!

About year ago, I did an Indie Filmmaker Spotlight piece on Todd Wolfson, who was just finishing up work on his third low-budget horror short, SPONGE. Todd's now stepping up his game and doing a feature film called BATSH!T, which was heavily inspired by EVIL DEAD II, BEETLEJUICE, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE SHINING, LOST HIGHWAY, and other movies that helped usher in his deep-seated love for the Horror genre.

Synopsis: Felix is just an ordinary guy that's down on his luck. Shortly after losing his job, a typical trip to the pharmacy results in Felix accidentally dosing himself with a powerful hallucinogen. Unable to differentiate between fantasy and reality, he is about to go on a very strange trip! BATSH!T follows Felix's experiences as he interacts with his uncontrollable hallucinations over the course of forty-eight hours, both at home, and within the confines of Trundle Manor.

Crowdfunding Campaign Info: BATSH!T creator Todd Wolfson is currently trying to raise $2,500 with a GoFundMe campaign. Those funds will go towards special effects, make-up, props, catering, editing, and various BATSH!T-related perks! Scream Factory Gives William Castle's THE NIGHT WALKER Its Blu-ray Debut!

Scream Factory dredges up another classic title that I've never seen! As a fan of Castle's other cinematic efforts (e.g. 13 GHOSTS, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, and THE TINGLER), I am stoked to finally be able to see this lesser-known feature in high-definition!

Synopsis: "Another frightening film from the mind of Robert Bloch, author of PSYCHO!" Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor, reteaming for their first film following their divorce(!), star in this intense thriller about a wealthy widow who is haunted by her husband and seduced by a handsome stranger – all in her dreams!

Following the death of her millionaire husband, Howard (Hayden Rorke), Irene Trent (Stanwyck) endures dreams so real and terrifying, that she finds herself trapped in an eerie world existing between fact and fantasy. Isolated from the world by her husband's possessive nature, Irene feels there is no one she can turn to except for his personal attorney (Taylor), the only visitor Howard ever allowed to the house.

But even as her dreams begin to take vivid shape, Irene begins to walk into a very real nightmare of deception, murder and betrayal!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Are Now Proudly Part of The Criterion Collection!

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS boasts a new 4K transfer with new and archival extras! File both of these under "must own!"

Synopsis: Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget, by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, directed by horror master George A. Romero, is a great story of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time!

A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero's claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is back!

Disc Specs:

Synopsis: In this chilling adaptation of the best-selling novel by Thomas Harris, the astonishingly versatile director Jonathan Demme crafted a taut psychological thriller about an American obsession: serial murder. As Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee who enlists the help of the infamous Hannibal 'the Cannibal' Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to gain insight into the mind of another killer, Jodie Foster subverts classic gender dynamics and gives one of the most memorable performances of her career.

As her foil, Anthony Hopkins is the archetypal antihero cultured, quick-witted, and savagely murderous delivering a harrowing portrait of humanity gone terribly wrong. A gripping police procedural and a disquieting immersion into a twisted psyche, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS swept the Academy Awards (best picture, director, screenplay, actress, actor) and remains a cultural touchstone.

UPDATE [07/07/23]: Scream Factory will be releasing MY DEMON LOVER to Blu-ray disc on September 5, 2023! You can pre-order a copy HERE!

Decades ago, when I was a fervent collector of VHS tapes, I would scour the tables and racks of various video stores and liquidation outlets. This allowed me to build up my collection fairly quickly (and cheaply), and I discovered many obscure titles that still haven't made the leap to DVD or Blu-ray to this day!

One such film that stuck with me over the years was an odd romantic comedy called MY DEMON LOVER. Once I read that it featured Scott Valentine from Family Ties (he played Nick Moore) as a horny demon, I was sold! However thirty years have passed since this bizarre gem hit theaters, and no one has bothered to put it out on Blu-ray disc! This will not stand!

Synopsis: Denny (Michele Little - SWEET REVENGE, RADIOACTIVE DREAMS, APOLLO 13) doesn't have much luck with love. (Maybe it's because she's named after a restaurant chain?) But after her most recent breakup, she meets Kaz (Scott Valentine - TO SLEEP WITH A VAMPIRE, CARNOSAUR 3: PRIMAL SPECIES, Black Scorpion), a homeless street musician with a startling secret: Whenever he becomes aroused, he sprouts horns, claws, and wings!

Eventually Denny starts falling for her demon lover, but their relationship hits a bump when the bodies of women start piling up around New York City! Is Kaz losing control of his lustful alter-ego, or is another culprit on the loose? Either way, he must find the answer in order to clear his conscience, find true love, and break his curse!

"For the last time, NO I'm not William Katt!"

It's been a while since I last watched MY DEMON LOVER Vault Dwellers, but I do have some fond recollections of it. While Scott Valentine is kind of out of his element, the movie does have a fun premise and some surprisingly good practical effects. Though I can't classify this movie as some long lost classic, I feel like MY DEMON LOVER has been unfairly cast aside, and is more than deserving of a legit Blu-ray release!

Availability: Originally released on VHS (and Laserdisc?!) by RCA/Columbia Home Video, MY DEMON LOVER would get a second go on video tape in 1998 when it was re-released by New Line Home Video. Imagine my absolute shock when I discovered that it is currently available to stream (or buy) on Amazon Instant Video, and has also been released as part of the Warner Archive Collection (on DVD-R)!

Current Rights Holder: Warner Bros. New Line Cinema produced and distributed MY DEMON LOVER back in 1987. In 2008, they merged with Warner, and a mere four years later, this film became part of the Warner Archive Collection.

Love can be ugly sometimes.

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • A new 2K scan of the film from an archival print or interpositive.
  • Audio commentary by director Charlie Loventhal.
  • Interviews with screenwriter Leslie Ray, director Charlie Loventhal, and main cast members (i.e. Scott Valentine, Michele Little, Robert Trebor, and Gina Gallego)
  • Interview with some of the special effects team, including: Robert Calvert, Doug Drexler, and John Caglione Jr.
  • Intimate Strangers Music Video for "Let Go." (As seen HERE.)
  • Original theatrical trailer
I can't possibly be the only person that enjoys this silly romantic creature feature can I? If so, then I guess we're stuck with what is essentially a legal bootleg that lacks any extras. BUT if enough people show interest, then perhaps we can get the WB to give MY DEMON LOVER a nice shiny Blu-ray release! If you're up to the task, start bugging the powers that be: Contact Warner Bros. on Facebook and Twitter, and Warner Archive on Facebook and Twitter as well!
