Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors, and welcome to another (late) edition of  Stock Your Vault! This week is filled with new titles on Blu-ray and 4K disc, so hopefully you've been prepping for a few weeks, squirreling away a little extra expendable income to help grow your physical media collection!

There were a lot of new 4K titles released this week: Sony Pictures released I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, as well as new 4K steelbooks of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, and a "reprinting" of their Limited Edition double feature of GHOSTBUSTERS & GHOSTBUSTERS II!
 

Blue Underground added to the 4K flood with THE GIRL FROM RIO, Paramount (who seems to be vying to be the most popular studio with collectors) with their new 4K steelbook of HALLOWEEN H20, Arrow Video with CARLITO'S WAY, Criterion with MOONAGE DAYDREAM (starring David Bowie!), and Synapse Films with their standard edition of Argento's TENEBRAE.

On the Blu-ray side, we got two shot-on-video titles from Visual Vengeance, namely THE ABOMINATION and REPLIGATOR, AMAZON JAIL 1 & 2 (a Brazilian exploitation double feature) from Vinegar Syndrome, Kino Lorber's DEATH WISH 4: THE CRACKDOWN and DEATH WISH V: THE FACE OF DEATH, and a classic b-movie double feature of THE GIANT GILA MONSTER and THE KILLER SHREWS from Film Masters!

Disney released season one of Marvel's above average LOKI TV series (also available on 4K), Strand Releasing unveiled their long-awaited "remixed and remastered" Blu of THE DOOM GENERATION, and Severin Films gave us DRACULA AND SON starring Christopher Lee!

With so many great titles out this week, I was hard-pressed to choose one to be my "pick of the week!" In the end I settled on Scream Factory's new 3-Disc 4K Collector's Edition of George Mihalka's Canadian slasher, MY BLOODY VALENTINE. While it is essentially a repackaging of the previous Collector's Edition Blu-ray, this release does feature an all new 4K restoration of the uncut version of the movie, plus new (but old) cover art!

Terror Beyond Belief! Synapse Films' Standard 4K Release of Dario Argento's TENEBRAE is Now Available!

SYNAPSE FILMS' 2-DISC EDITION OF "TENEBRAE," IS A MORE WALLET-FRIENDLY WAY FOR FANS TO OWN THEIR BEAUTIFUL 4K RESTORATION OF DARIO ARGENTO'S MUCH-CELEBRATED GIALLO!

Back in July of this year, Synapse Films released a Limited (to 8,000) Edition 3-Disc set of TENEBRAE, which included the recreated 90-minute UNSANE cut, as well as a collectible booklet, a double-sided poster (featuring the Italian and Japanese poster art), and a half-dozen double-sided lobby card reproductions! However, the price-tag on that bad boy was pretty hefty, starting at $65 or higher depending on the retailer! Thankfully, Synapse has made their fantastic 4K restoration of the film far more attainable with this new 4K/Blu-ray combo, which retains all of the bonus features (save one) from the limited edition release! If TENEBRAE is your Argento film of choice (personally, my favorite will always be DEEP RED) and you somehow don't own it, or are looking to upgrade from DVD or Blu-ray, then this 2-disc set deserves a spot in your collection!

Synopsis: Italian horror master Dario Argento elevates the giallo genre to new heights with 1982's TENBRAE, a darkly humorous and notoriously grisly murder-mystery that many consider to be one of his finest works. Now, Synapse Films, in conjunction with Arrow Video makes this gory suspense classic available in a new 4K restoration! American mystery author Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa, DEATH WISH II) comes to Rome to promote his newest novel, Tenebrae. 

A razor-wielding psychopath is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. The only thing (other than the poster, lobby cards, and packaging) that sets this new 2-disc set apart from the pricier limited edition is the UNSANE disc. If having the shorter U.S. cut is imperative, then snag a copy ASAP from Diabolik DVD! Otherwise, you should be good to go with this standard edition from Synapse Films! The restoration work is top notch, and the there is so much bonus material that you'll have to spend the better part of a day (or two) to get through all of it! If you're convinced that you need TENEBRAE in your collection, then order a copy of this 4K/Blu-ray combo now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or direct from SYNAPSE FILMS!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

I! Live! A-GAIN! Mwahahahaha!

Greetings fellow collectors! I am so sorry I've been away for so long! Between 50+ hours a week at the new(ish) job, Summer vacation, and getting my three-year old monster ready for pre-K, I've been far too busy to do much more than hide in the dark recesses of the web and obsess over the constant stream of new titles pouring forth from Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, Vinegar Syndrome, Scream Factory, and all of the other boutique labels!

There hasn't been a new Stock Your Vault post since Valentine's Day, so I guess it's only appropriate that I attempt to bring back this popular weekly column just in time for Scott Valentine's Day! (Ha!) Here's some of the physical media highlights you can expect on Tuesday, September 5th!

Kino Lorber Studio Classics brings the long sought after Barbarian Brothers comedy DOUBLE TROUBLE to Blu-ray for the first time (now we just need THINK BIG), while Sony Pictures debuts the bizarre family favorite MATILDA on 4K, as well as their fantastic sequel SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, which is being released on both formats!

Criterion Collection adds the beloved 80s Fantasy classic THE PRINCESS BRIDE to their 4K catalog, Paramount polishes off their STAR TREK: PICARD series on Blu-ray disc and brings Tim Burton's great SLEEPY HOLLOW to 4K (in both standard and steelbook releases), and Second Sight Films drops a gorgeous limited edition 4K boxed set for David Robert Mitchell's haunting IT FOLLOWS! (Note: The 4K disc is region free - the Blu-ray is Region B locked.)

But this week I'm giving my tip of the hat to Scream Factory, not for their 4K Collector's Edition release of NIGHT OF THE COMET (which contains a new 4K restoration and the original theatrical poster artwork!), but for their new Blu-ray of MY DEMON LOVER! Along with a new 2K restoration plus interviews with the film's composer and editor, the disc also contains a new making-of documentary!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Wow! 2022 is coming to an end rather quickly Vault Dwellers - there's only thirteen days left until Christmas Day! If you're still stuck on what to get that weirdo cinephile in your life, or you're still building your own personal holiday wishlist, then you might just find some great new titles this week on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray!

Severin Films' trio of Bruno Mattei action flicks finally get a wider release - brace yourselves for the insanity of BORN TO FIGHT, COP GAME, and DOUBLE TARGET! Scream Factory debuts standard & limited edition steelbook editions of CARRIE, while their parent company does the same for Laika titles CORALINE and PARANORMAN!

Arrow Video brings the sci-fi downer SILENT RUNNING, which, oddly enough, was one of the biggest inspirations for MST3K!, to 4K disc today while 88 Films gives U.S. collectors POLICE STORY 3: SUPERCOP (on 4K & Blu) as well as BLOOD AND DIAMONDS! PARAMOUNT's popular new Horror film SMILE arrives in all formats, and Lionsgate drops a 30th anniversary 4K release for HIGHLANDER! (I guess this means 4Ks of the remaining sequels can't be too far behind?)

Synapse Films just released their standard edition Blu of CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE, and (surprise!) Diabolik DVD has apparently become a distributor and released four new titles today, namely AFTEREFFECTS, HALLUCINATION, MANIAC DRIVER, and NIGHTMARE SYMPHONY! As for my pick of the week, I'm giving it to the new Vestron Video Collector's Series SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION Blu-ray set! This trilogy of direct-to-video sequels features new 2K transfers, new audio commentaries, new cast & crew interviews, & more! It's a definite must-own for Vestron completionists as well as fans of the super bizarre franchise!

Go Bigfoot Hunting for the CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE - Coming to Blu-ray Disc on December 13th!

SYNAPSE FILMS GIVES THIS 1976 SASQUATCH CLASSIC SOME MAJOR LOVE WITH A NEW 4K RESTORATION AND BONUS FEATURES!

Made in the wake of Charles B. Pierce's THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK (and several other films trying to capitalize on its success), Joy Houck Jr.'s entry into the Bigfoot movie sub-genre was one of the better made docudramas of that era. Once a staple of late night television, CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE would eventually make its way to VHS, but wouldn't see the light of day again until an official DVD release back in 2005. And now, thanks to the efforts of the folks at Synapse Films, this forgotten tale of two intrepid researchers scouring the swamps of Louisiana for proof of a legendary "missing link" is back and better than ever, boasting a 4K restoration and fantastic new extras! Let's take a closer look at this upcoming release, shall we?

Synopsis: There's a hairy humanoid beast lurking in the Louisiana swamps, but only trapper Joe Canton (Jack Elam, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST) has seen it and lived to tell the tale, and the other residents of Oil City, Louisiana don't talk about it. But that's not about to stop intrepid grad students Pahoo (Dennis Fimple, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES) and Rives (John David Carson, EMPIRE OF THE ANTS), who are determined to track down the Bigfoot-like creature. Defying local sheriff Billy Carter (Bill Thurman, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW), the duo trek deep into the wilds of Black Lake, and a series of frightening encounters make it clear the monster is no mere legend.

Following in the (big) footsteps of THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK and similar docudramas, 1976's CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE is a fictional Sasquatch saga, albeit one inspired by real reports. With a colorful cast, also including Dub Taylor (THE WILD BUNCH), and plenty of rural atmosphere courtesy of cinematographer Dean Cundey (HALLOWEEN, THE THING, JURASSIC PARK), scripter Jim McCullough Jr.—who also co-stars—and director Joy Houck Jr. bring touches of humor and humanity that complement the mystery of the monster, and the terror of its attacks.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release pops up later on down the road, for the time being, this release is guaranteed to be the very best that CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE has ever looked or sounded! Coupled with the Dean Cundey featurette, plus the audio commentary by Gingold and Poggiali, this is the most love the film has been shown since it was shot, edited, and released theatrically over four decades ago!

If you're a Bigfoot film enthusiast, then make sure to pre-order your copy right now (for approximately $20) from AMAZON or BULLMOOSE! However, if you're the type of movie collector that prefers a slipcover with their disc, then hurry and grab a limited edition copy of CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE right this minute (for approx. $30) from DIABOLIK DVD or directly from SYNAPSE FILMS!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 02/25/2020!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors of physical media, and welcome to the final STOCK YOUR VAULT post of February 2020! There were a lot of great releases in the past few weeks, but this week in particular is loaded with new titles!

Tokyo Shock comes out of nowhere with a new (DVD and) Blu-ray release of GAPPA: THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER, Synapse brings the Unrated Producer's Cut of HOT DOG... THE MOVIE to DVD & Blu-ray, and Vinegar Syndrome just dropped their standard Blu-ray release of SPOOKIES for those that missed out on the Limited Edition!

Scream Factory's lone release this week is their Collector's Edition Blu-ray of PET SEMATARY TWO, Arrow Video brings DEADLY MANOR and the ONE MISSED CALL TRILOGY to Blu-ray, and Severin Films brings a trio of new titles to DVD and Blu-ray disc, including THE ASTROLOGER, CRIES OF PLEASURE, and NIGHT OF OPEN SEX.

Mill Creek Entertainment delivers a double dose of Ultraman today with two series that have never been released in the U.S. - THE RETURN OF ULTRAMAN and ULTRAMAN ORB: THE ORIGIN SAGA, while SRS Cinema brings a pair of indie kaiju flicks to Blu-ray disc, namely REIGO: KING OF THE SEA MONSTERS, and RAIGA: GOD OF THE MONSTERS! Also out today is Richard Stanley's COLOR OUT OF SPACE starring Nicolas Cage, which is supposedly the start of a new H.P. Lovecraft trilogy!

But my pick of the week has to be Mondo Macabro's all new Region Free Blu-ray of THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD, which features Paul Naschy in his signature role of Waldemar Daninsky! The film has been restored in 4K from an original negative and comes with a variety of extras, including interviews, an audio commentary, an introduction from Paul Naschy, and more!

November 2019 is just over halfway gone, and it looks like we're sort of getting a breather before the Cyber Monday and Black Friday madness that is in store for us all next week! But as always, there are some must-own titles available this week!

Scorpion Releasing brings the obscure breakdancing comedy THE DELIVERY BOYS to DVD & Blu-ray for the first time ever, Shout! Factory gives ROCK N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL a 40th Anniversary Steelbook release, and Severin Films gives some major love to GWENDOLINE and Penelope Spheeris' THE BOYS NEXT DOOR!

Scream Factory's lone release this week is 1981's THE FAN, an obscure quasi-slasher film with a stellar cast, Arrow Video gives HITCH HIKE TO HELL a great Blu-ray release, and the documentary, MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN arrives on both DVD & Blu-ray disc!

Discotek Media brings the complete MESSAGE FROM SPACE: GALACTIC WARS series to Blu-ray for the first time ever, while Mill Creek Entertainment fires back with ULTRAMAN GEED AND ULTRAMAN ORB, and the entire FARSCAPE series gets a 20th Anniversary Blu-ray release!

But even with all that good stuff, I have to give the win to Synapse Films this week for their all new 4K Ultra HD release of Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA. This release promises the absolute best audio & video presentation of this film you can currently have, a new retrospective featurette, and new reversible cover art!

SUSPIRIA Arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on November 19th!

SYNAPSE FILMS BRINGS THE BELOVED DARIO ARGENTO CLASSIC TO 4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY DISC THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!

With so many labels restoring Horror and exploitation titles in 4K, it was only a matter of time before one of them started releasing 4K UHD discs! But my money was never on Synapse, who's releasing Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA to the format this November! Along with the most pristine video presentation of the film that we've seen up to this point, this new release will also have multiple audio options and a good number of special features! Synopsis: Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers! We're about halfway through March, and in my neck of the woods, Old Man Winter is doing his level best to make our lives difficult. However, even he cannot stop the awesome power of our favorite Cult, Horror, and Exploitation labels!

Arrow Video broke up their George A. Romero boxed set to give THE CRAZIES, SEASON OF THE WITCH, and THERE'S ALWAYS VANILLA separate Special Edition releases, Scream Factory brings THE AMBULANCE to Blu-ray for the first time ever, and VCI gives TWILIGHT PEOPLE its Blu-ray debut!

But the real juggernaut this week is Synapse Films who have just unleashed their 2-disc Special Edition of Argento's SUSPIRIA, the highly-anticipated UNEARTHED AND UNTOLD: THE PATH TO PET SEMATARY documentary, and an animated feature called PATH OF BLOOD!
