Return to The Overlook Hotel in Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP!

Cover art for the 4K UHD release of Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP.
THE FILM ADAPTATION OF STEPHEN KING'S FOLLOWUP TO "THE SHINING" ARRIVES ON DVD, BLU-RAY, AND 4K ULTRA HD DISC ON FEBRUARY 4TH!

Last year I barely went to see anything in theaters (I averaged less than one trip to the closest cineplex each month), though there were plenty of movies I wanted to see, such as Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP. Adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name (which I just finished reading last month), this film pits grown-up Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) against a supernatural foe called "Rose the Hat," a vampiric antagonist that targets children that have "the shining!" I've heard mixed reviews about this film, but I'm eager to finally watch it when it arrives in stores next Tuesday!

Synopsis: Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor - TRAINSPOTTING, the STAR WARS PREQUEL TRILOGY) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran - I CAN I WILL I DID), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the "shine." Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson - THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE series) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra's innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH With Some BODY PARTS at THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray of Eric Red's BODY PARTS.
EVIL LIMB DONORS, VENGEANCE FROM THE GRAVE, AND DRILLER KILLERS HIGHLIGHT SCREAM FACTORY'S FINAL TRIO OF TITLES FOR JANUARY 2020!

I own the SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE films on DVD and would like to eventually upgrade them to Blu-ray (i.e. when Parts II & III come back into print), and I'm definitely interested in scoping out LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH, but BODY PARTS is easily the Scream Factory release I'm most excited for. Written and directed by Eric Red (a screenwriter and filmmaker that doesn't get nearly enough praise) and featuring Jeff Fahey and Brad Dourif, this early 90s Horror flick has managed to evade me for decades! But now, thanks to Scream Factory's efforts, I will finally be able to watch this oft-overlooked classic in HD!

BODY PARTS (1991)

Synopsis: From Eric Red, the writer of THE HITCHER and NEAR DARK, comes this tale of a medical experiment gone very wrong.

Bill Chrushank is a criminal psychologist who loses his arm and nearly his life in a grisly car accident. A daring medical operation follows, in which a donor's arm is successfully grafted onto Bill's body. But after the operation, the arm starts to take on a violent life of its own, striking out against Bill's wife and children. Consumed by fears about his dangerous behavior, Bill is driven to learn the donor's identity – and makes a horrifying discovery that delivers him into a world of unimaginable terror. Written and directed by Eric Red (COHEN & TATE, BAD MOON), this thriller stars Jeff Fahey (ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL) and Brad Dourif (CHILD'S PLAY, GRAVEYARD SHIFT).

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 88 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono

Extras:
  • NEW! Audio Commentary With Director Eric Red!
  • NEW! I Dare You To Read The Script – An Interview With Director Eric Red!

  • NEW! That One Hurt – An Interview With Editor Anthony Redman!
  • Deleted Gore Footage With Optional Commentary With Director Eric Red!

Though it's a shame they couldn't snag interviews with Fahey or Dourif, the (over) two hours of special features on this disc more than make up for that! Scream Factory's Blu-ray of BODY PARTS is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and should cost between $23 - $25! Order yourself a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

And an even more unsettling discovery is that the entire region seems to be under the influence of a mysterious woman who has been living in the supposedly empty house. There Is Nothing Silent About Nights in Paddock County: EDGE OF THE AXE Comes to Blu-ray on January 26th!

Cover art for Arrow Video's EDGE OF THE AXE Blu-ray!
ARROW VIDEO BRINGS JOSE RAMON LARRAZ' OFT-OVERLOOKED 1988 SLASHER FLICK TO BLU-RAY WITH A NEW 2K RESTORATION AND EXTRAS!

One of my favorite sub-genres of Horror has to be the slasher film. From the mighty franchises filled with increasingly ridiculous sequels (e.g. FRIDAY THE 13TH and HALLOWEEN), to the one hit wonders (e.g. THE BURNING, INTRUDER, MY BLOODY VALENTINE), I feel like I've seen just about all of them. Leave it to Arrow Video to burst my bubble with their recent announcement of EDGE OF THE AXE! I have never seen this Spanish slasher flick before (though I do vaguely recall seeing its minimalist VHS cover art at my local mom & pop video store back in the day), but the more I read about it, the more I need to see it! And once next week rolls around, I will finally have my chance to experience this rarely-mentioned slasher flick in startling HD clarity!

Synopsis: From cult Spanish filmmaker José Ramón Larraz (VAMPYRES, SYMPTOMS) comes this long-neglected late 80s slasher classic, finally unleashed on Blu-ray for the first time ever!

The rural community of Paddock County is being rocked by the crazed exploits of an axe-wielding psychopath, who stalks the night in a black trenchcoat and mask. As the victims pile up, the authorities attempt to keep a lid on the situation, whilst computer whizz-kid Gerald and girlfriend Lillian seek to unmask the killer before the town population reaches zero.

Nominally set in Northern California but shot primarily in Madrid, giving the film an off-kilter, American/European atmosphere akin to the likes of PIECES, Edge of the Axe is a late entry hack-and-slash masterpiece from one of the titans of Spanish terror.

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color |  91 minutes | Region A

Hot damn that's a lot of love for a movie that most of us had forgotten about - good on Arrow Video for taking the time to give EDGE OF THE AXE a new lease on life! Speaking of which, their Blu-ray release of this title is scheduled for release on Tuesday, January 28th and should cost between $24 - $28! Take the leap of faith now fellow slasher film fans and get yourself a copy from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from ARROW VIDEO!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!
Blue Underground's 3-Disc Limited Edition of HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY is Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

As January 2020 heads towards it's conclusion, we get a slight reprieve this week. The release slate of new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HD discs isn't very big - probably because our pals at Scream Factory and Arrow Video seem to have taken a week off. And honestly that's not a bad thing because February is shaping up to be a really expensive month!

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has the most new releases today with their new Blu-rays of HIGH-BALLIN', SEMI-TOUGH, TOBRUK, ULTZANA'S RAID, and THE WAR LORD, and VCI is a close second with their new releases of THE PHANTOM CREEPS and GORDON OF GHOST CITY serials, as well as their new 25th Anniversary double feature of MOMMY & MOMMY 2!

Universal brings KITTEN WITH A WHIP to Blu-ray for the first time along with last year's horror flop COUNTDOWN, Lionsgate debuts Kevin Smith's JAY & SILENT BOB REBOOT, and for fans of "zombedy" flicks, you get your choice of ZOMBIELAND 2: DOUBLE TAP and last year's LITTLE MONSTERS (Region A Import) which features Lupita Nyong'o and Josh Gad!

But this week's big winner simply has to be Blue Underground's stellar 3-Disc Limited Edition Blu-ray of Lucio Fulci's HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY! The final portion of The Maestro's GATES OF HELL TRILOGY boasts a new 4K scan, a bunch of new extras, and a soundtrack CD! It goes without saying that if you're a fan of Fulci, or a fan of Italian Horror in general, you absolutely need this release in your collection!

The remainder of this week's slim pickings is made up of direct-to-DVD junk and anime (as usual) - to see the full list just continue scrolling!

On February 25th, PET SEMATARY TWO Claws Its Way Out of a Shallow Grave and Onto Blu-ray Disc!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray of PET SEMATARY TWO!
MARY LAMBERT'S OFT-MALIGNED SEQUEL GETS A TON OF LOVE IN SCREAM FACTORY'S UPCOMING BLU-RAY RELEASE!

Growing up, I had a fascination with the written works of Stephen King, and the film adaptations that resulted from them. So when PET SEMATARY TWO suddenly appeared one day on the shelves at a local Blockbuster Video, I was psyched!

But despite being directed by Mary Lambert (who previously directed the original PET SEMATARY) and having an amazing cast (which included post-TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY Edward Furlong, the REVENGE OF THE NERDS series' Anthony Edwards, and "The Kurgan" himself, Clancy Brown!), this film just never clicked with me, and I still have yet to revisit it nearly three decades later. That being said, Scream Factory really went all-in on this release, so maybe PET SEMATARY TWO is worth giving another chance?

Synopsis: Sometimes dead is better. But the shocking terror that plagued Ludlow, Maine, in Pet Sematary is still very much alive in this sequel to the 1989 hit film.

After the death of his wife, veterinarian Chase Matthews (Anthony Edwards - ZODIAC) and his 13-year-old son, Jeff (Edward Furlong - TERMINATOR: DARK FATE), move to Ludlow to rebuild their lives. Antagonized by the neighborhood kids, Jeff befriends another outsider, Drew Gilbert, who lives in fear of his cruel stepfather, Gus (Clancy Brown - JOHN DIES AT THE END). After Gus cold-bloodedly shoots Drew's beloved dog, the boys bury the body in the local Indian burial grounds – a place rumored to have the powers of resurrection. But when evil is awakened, the boys realize that sometimes you should just let dead dogs lie.

On January 21st, Own the Definitive Release of Lucio Fulci's HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY!

Cover art for Blue Underground's 3-Disc Limited Edition of Lucio Fulci's HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY!
BLUE UNDERGROUND GIVES THE FINAL FILM IN LUCIO FULCI'S "GATES OF HELL TRILOGY" A FANTASTIC 3-DISC BLU-RAY RELEASE!

Out of all the Italian Horror filmmakers that were cranking out movies in the 70s and 80s, I always liked Lucio Fulci the best. I enjoyed the bold absurdity of ZOMBI 2's shark vs. zombie sequence, and gawked at the gore in THE BEYOND and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (aka GATES OF HELL) while I tried to figure out just what the hell was going on! And though it isn't my favorite of Fulci's "Gates of Hell trilogy" (though it does have quite a memorable bat attack) I am quite glad to see HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY get the royal treatment from Blue Underground! Boasting a new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, plus new special features and other goodies, this 3-Disc release is easily a must-have for fans of Italian Horror cinema!

Synopsis: A young family moves from their cramped New York City apartment to a spacious new home in New England. But this is no ordinary house in the country: the previous owner was the deranged Dr. Freudstein, whose monstrous human experiments have left a legacy of bloody mayhem. Now, someone-or something-is alive in the basement, and home sweet home is about to become a horrific hell on earth.

Canada's Greatest Slasher Film Gets a Definitive Blu-ray Release Just in Time For Valentine's Day!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Amazing Collector's Edition Blu-ray of MY BLOODY VALENTINE!
SCREAM FACTORY GOES ALL OUT WITH THEIR 2-DISC COLLECTOR'S EDITION OF GEORGE MIHALKA'S CLASSIC SLASHER - OWN IT ON FEBRUARY 11TH!

I grew up on a steady diet of heavily-edited slasher films when I was a kid, and typically gravitated toward the usual suspects. (i.e. Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, etc.) I eventually got out of my slasher comfort zone in my early teens, and finally got to see many classics in their R-rated glory, while also discovering numerous non-franchise slasher gems like MY BLOODY VALENTINE! This film in particular became an instant favorite, and I was filled with excitement when Lionsgate released it to Blu-ray back in 2009 with various gory bits edited back into the movie! With a new HD transfer, restored footage (thought lost for many years), and new extras, clearly there was no way anyone could top that long out of print Blu-ray release.... UNTIL NOW.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981 - COLLECTOR'S EDITION)

Synopsis: On Valentine's Day, someone always loses their heart. Twenty years ago, this small town lost more than that. When supervisors abandoned their posts to attend the town's annual holiday dance, a tragedy claimed the lives of five miners. The sole survivor, Harry Warden, was institutionalized, but returned for a vengeful massacre on the disaster's first anniversary.

Nineteen years later, the town is gearing up for another Valentine's Day party. Teen sweethearts T.J. and Sarah, along with their friend Axel, are among the excited partygoers. But when a box of candy containing an eerie warning and blood-soaked heart arrive, the townsfolk realize that romance is as good as dead. And so are they ...

Cover art for Scream Factory's DEMONS OF THE MIND!
GET DOUBLY CURSED WITH SCREAM FACTORY'S TWO LATEST HAMMER HORROR ADDITIONS ON BLU-RAY DISC!

I never quite got around to exploring Hammer's impressive catalog of horror titles, other than the films containing Christopher Lee's Dracula, or Peter Cushing's Dr. Frankenstein, and I've always kind of regretted that.

Thankfully they are working hard to fill that void by releasing numerous Hammer films to Blu-ray, including this week's two newest releases: DEMONS OF THE MIND and THE MUMMY'S SHROUD! Both films make their Region A Blu-ray debuts with new audio commentaries - if you are a fan of Hammer flicks you need to pick these discs!

DEMONS OF THE MIND (1971)

Synopsis: In the 19th century, a depraved baron confronts a hereditary curse by imprisoning his two adult children in the family castle. When a nearby village is plagued by a series of murders, the killings trigger a mass hysteria of rituals and sadistic desires. Can these "demons" be destroyed by a power beyond madness ... or will a final onslaught of evil forever torment this land?

Patrick Magee (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE) and Paul Jones (lead singer of the band Manfred Mann) co-star in this psychological shocker from the director of TO THE DEVIL... A DAUGHTER that many Hammer fans consider to be one of the studio's most offbeat and unique horror thrillers ever!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 89 minutes | Region A

THE MUMMY'S SHROUD (1967)

Synopsis: IT LIVES AGAIN! A small archaeological party headed by Sir Basil Walden (Andre Morell - THE PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES) discovers the hidden tomb of Kah-to-Bey.

Despite the warning from the guardian, Hasmid, they take Kah-to-Bey to Cairo and place him next to the mummy of Prem, his devoted slave and protector. The mystical hieroglyphic shroud that covers Kah-to-Bey's body is read aloud by Ali and restores Prem to life, resulting in an unstoppable progression of madness and murder.

SCREAM & SHOUT! FACTORY'S 2020 RELEASE CALENDAR!

Scream Factory - Shout! Factory - Shout Select Logos!

I've been keeping an annual calendar of Scream / Shout! Factory's new Blu-ray titles since 2016, and it seems like every year they manage to keep upping the ante. Along with another pretty good batch of IFC Midnight titles (PLEDGE, RUST CREEK, THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER) in 2019, Scream Factory released several awesome boxed sets (THE OMEN COLLECTION, THE FLY COLLECTION), and began dipping into the vaults of Universal (THE MOLE PEOPLE, TARANTULA), Paramount (SILVER BULLET), and Warner Bros. (THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, SCARS OF DRACULA)! They also inched closer to owning the entirety of John Carpenter's directorial filmography, and released various collectible figures and limited edition steelbooks! It was definitely a good (but expensive) year to be a Scream/Shout! Factory fan!

This year is looking to be just as pricey, and I'm super excited to see what they release now that they've gained to the catalogs of major studios. The first quarter already looks pretty good (MY BLOODY VALENTINE and APRIL FOOL'S DAY!), but here's hoping they pull out all the stops for the second half of the year, and release some of my favorite Paramount titles that haven't yet made the leap to Region A Blu-ray, like ORCA, THE EXPLORERS, and D.C. CAB!

Also, I've got a gut feeling that they're going to drop a brand new (and complete) FRIDAY THE 13TH boxed set later this year (likely on the week of 11/10 - just in time for this year's final Friday... the 13th!). I have absolutely no proof of this, and could be entirely wrong, but... I just have a hunch... I'll guess we'll find out for sure towards the tail end of the Summer!

In any case, as the year progresses this page will be updated to reflect newly announced titles from Shout! Factory, Shout Select, and Scream Factory! Release dates are subject to change - if you notice any errors or omissions, please contact your friendly neighborhood Vault Master so that I can fix it ASAP!

Now, without further ado, here's Scream/Shout's 2020 Release Calendar!

KINO LORBER STUDIO CLASSICS RUSTLES UP A TRIO OF CLASSIC SPAGHETTI WESTERNS ON BLU-RAY!

I've been absolutely enamored with Spaghetti Westerns ever since I first laid eyes upon Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST so many years ago! It opened the floodgates, and soon after I watched Leone's MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY, the delightfully odd SABATA TRILOGY, the TRINITY films (starring Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer), DJANGO, and numerous others!

Truth be told, it has been some time since I delved into the Spaghetti Western sub-genre, but Kino Lorber's latest releases, which include THE HELLBENDERS and THE SPECIALISTS (both helmed by Sergio Corbucci, director of DJANGO and NAVAJO JOE) and KILL THEM ALL AND COME BACK ALONE (from THE LAST SHARK director Enzo G. Castellari) seem like a great way to jump back in! If you're as big a fan of "macaroni westerns" as I am, then continue reading to learn more about these Kino Lorber titles!

THE HELLBENDERS (AKA I CRUDELI, THE CRUEL ONES - 1967)

Synopsis: From Sergio Corbucci, the legendary director of DJANGO, NAVAJO JOE, THE GREAT SILENCE, and THE MERCENARY comes this classic spaghetti western starring screen icon Joseph Cotten (THE THIRD MAN, DUEL IN THE SUN, PORTRAIT OF JENNIE) as the fanatical patriarch of a family of ex-Confederate killers who, in order to finance an invasion of the North, massacres a Union Army convoy carrying a large shipment of money. But before the hell-bent clan can re-ignite the Civil War, they’ll have to smuggle a coffin crammed with the stolen loot across a frontier inflamed by lust, violence and extreme vengeance.

Norma Bengell (PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES), Aldo Sambrell (FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE) and Al Mulock (THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE UGLY) co-star in this fully restored western shocker—also known as THE CRUEL ONES. Featuring a classic score by renowned composer Ennio Morricone (A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, THE HATEFUL EIGHT) and beautiful photography by celebrated cinematographer Enzo Barboni (MAN OF THE EAST, NIGHTMARE CASTLE).

KILL THEM ALL AND COME BACK ALONE (1968)

Synopsis: From Enzo G. Castellari, the legendary director of STREET LAW, THE BIG RACKET, KEOMA, and THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS comes this action-packed spaghetti western starring screen and television great Chuck Connors (THE BIG COUNTRY, TV’s The Rifleman and Branded).

In 1864, mercenary Clyde McKay (Connors) leads a squad of tough-as-nails cutthroats on a mission for the Confederate high command to infiltrate an enemy fortress and steal millions in gold from the Union Army. Unfortunately, the crew he has assembled to pull off the heist is even less trustworthy than he is—and they all end up double-crossing each other. Frank Wolff (THE GREAT SILENCE, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST) and Franco Citti (ACCATTONE, THE DECAMERON) co-star in this fully restored, first-rate tale of betrayal and revenge.

THE SPECIALISTS (AKA GLI SPECIALISTI - 1969)

Notorious gunfighter Hud Dixon (Hallyday) arrives in Blackstone, a town where his brother was wrongfully accused of robbing a bank and lynched for it.

As Hud seeks revenge, he starts to discover the truth behind the stolen loot, and has to contend with an idealistic sheriff, a beautiful and seductive female banker, a corrupt businessman and a one-armed Mexican bandit, who was once his friend. WHITE SUPREMACISTS AND DRUG DEALERS BEWARE: VENGEANCE IS ON THE MENU WITH SCORPION RELEASING'S TWO NEWEST TITLES!

While the majority of the movies I watch are filled with hapless humans battling against monsters, mutants, and the forces of darkness, I do maintain a sizeable appreciation for revenge cinema! Watching someone pick themselves up after experiencing some sort of horrific trauma and getting the best of those who wronged them, or just unleashing the skills they learned in the military (or from a kung fu master) upon waves of goons and henchmen can be so utterly satisfying! And thankfully Scorpion Releasing is here to scratch that very itch with two new Blu-ray offerings: OMEGA SYNDROME and STAND ALONE! If you enjoy the sweet cinematic flavor of private justice, then continue reading to learn about this pair of new releases Vault Dwellers!

OMEGA SYNDROME (1986)

Synopsis: When an ex-GI’s (Ken Wahl - THE SOLDIER, THE TAKING OF BEVERLY HILLS, THE GLADIATOR, TV's Wiseguy) daughter (Nicole Eggert - TV’s Baywatch, Charles In Charge, HAUNTING OF MORELLA, BLOWN AWAY) is abducted by a gang of white supremacists, he enlists the aid of a former army buddy (George DiCenzo - HELTER SKELTER, BACK TO THE FUTURE, EXORCIST III) to get her back! OMEGA SYNDROME also stars Doug McClure (HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, AT THE EARTH'S CORE, THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT), Xander Berkeley (DEADLY DREAMS, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, CANDYMAN), and Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, UNDER SIEGE, THE VAN)!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 90 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (?)
