Greetings fellow collectors of physical media, and welcome to the final STOCK YOUR VAULT post of February 2020! There were a lot of great releases in the past few weeks, but this week in particular is loaded with new titles!

Tokyo Shock comes out of nowhere with a new (DVD and) Blu-ray release of GAPPA: THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER, Synapse brings the Unrated Producer's Cut of HOT DOG... THE MOVIE to DVD & Blu-ray, and Vinegar Syndrome just dropped their standard Blu-ray release of SPOOKIES for those that missed out on the Limited Edition!

Scream Factory's lone release this week is their Collector's Edition Blu-ray of PET SEMATARY TWO, Arrow Video brings DEADLY MANOR and the ONE MISSED CALL TRILOGY to Blu-ray, and Severin Films brings a trio of new titles to DVD and Blu-ray disc, including THE ASTROLOGER, CRIES OF PLEASURE, and NIGHT OF OPEN SEX.

Mill Creek Entertainment delivers a double dose of Ultraman today with two series that have never been released in the U.S. - THE RETURN OF ULTRAMAN and ULTRAMAN ORB: THE ORIGIN SAGA, while SRS Cinema brings a pair of indie kaiju flicks to Blu-ray disc, namely REIGO: KING OF THE SEA MONSTERS, and RAIGA: GOD OF THE MONSTERS! Also out today is Richard Stanley's COLOR OUT OF SPACE starring Nicolas Cage, which is supposedly the start of a new H.P. Lovecraft trilogy!

But my pick of the week has to be Mondo Macabro's all new Region Free Blu-ray of THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD, which features Paul Naschy in his signature role of Waldemar Daninsky! The film has been restored in 4K from an original negative and comes with a variety of extras, including interviews, an audio commentary, an introduction from Paul Naschy, and more!

Ultramen, Triphibian Monsters, and Indie Kaiju Royalty Stomp Their Way to Blu-ray Disc Today!

Covert art for Tokyo Shock's Blu-ray release of GAPPA: THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER!
PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS DESTROYED BY A CAVALCADE OF KAIJU FROM MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT, TOKYO SHOCK, AND SRS CINEMA!

Hot damn - what a time to be alive! Last year brought us the North American Blu-ray debut of Tsuburaya Productions' seemingly neverending Ultraman series and Criterion's GODZILLA: THE SHOWA ERA FILMS set! This year promises more Ultraman, a fantastic GAMERA set from Arrow Video, plus a few surprise titles! Speaking of which, this week is chock full of kaiju goodness!

Mill Creek Entertainment brings THE RETURN OF ULTRAMAN (in both standard and steelbook editions) and ULTRAMAN ORB: THE ORIGIN SAGA to Blu-ray disc, Tokyo Shock comes out of nowhere with GAPPA: THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER (aka MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET), and SRS Cinema brings Shinpei Hayashiya's two indie kaiju flicks to Limited Edition Blu-ray disc, namely RAIGA: GOD OF THE MONSTERS and REIGO: KING OF THE SEA MONSTERS! Let's take a closer look at all of this rubber monster goodness fellow kaiju fans!

GAPPA: THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER (1967)

Synopsis: Originally released directly to U.S. television in 1968 as THE MONSTER FROM THE PREHISTORIC PLANET (in a badly panned and scanned format), Gappa unfolds on a serene tropical island paradise untouched by modern civilization and technology where a dark secret lies dormant for centuries.

When a greedy business tycoon has grandiose plans to turn the island into the world’s largest resort and amusement park, a team of scientists stumble upon a mysterious dinosaur egg. When the egg hatches, GAPPA is born - a mythical giant reptilian bird that the indigenous island people worship as a god. Seeing dollar signs, the tycoon hurriedly ships the baby monster to Tokyo for commercial exploitation. Little does he know that the much larger, irate parents of the infant Gappa follow close behind to rescue their precious baby and wreak havoc upon monster-plagued Tokyo!

This historic rubber-suit epic rode the wave of Godzilla’s golden era and was the only kaiju produced by the prolific Nikkatsu studios. Long out of print on DVD, Media Blasters' Tokyo Shock label brings GAPPA to Blu-ray and remastered DVD in the only legitimate versions of the film officially licensed for North America, finally presented uncut in a fresh high-definition transfer to preserve all of its original widescreen glory!

Disc Specs:

The monster attacks the city of Asakusa, bringing death and destruction as he tramples building and lays waste to the military. Can Raiga be stopped, or will all of Japan be destroyed by his fury?

Believing it to be an enemy submarine, they fire and score a direct hit. But they are shocked when the object emits a strange cry as it sinks beneath the waves.

Soon after, something much bigger arrives, the massive kaiju Reigo, seething with rage at the murder of its cub. The monster attacks the Combined Fleet with incredible ferocity and awesome destructive power. The naval forces are caught off guard, and Reigo is able to destroy the escort ships and damage the Yamato before returning to the ocean depths.

While he struggles with his identity gap between Ultraman and Hideki Go, he grows through fighting against the monsters and aliens.

Waldemar Daninsky Tours 16th Century Japan in THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD!

Cover art for Mondo Macabro's THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD Blu-ray!
A SPANISH WEREWOLF CLASHES WITH JAPANESE SAMURAI AND MYSTICISM IN MONDO MACABRO'S NEWEST BLU-RAY RELEASE!

Until recently, I was completely unaware that there were any Japanese werewolf movies other than WOLF GUY and the two KIBAKICHI films, so you can imagine my utter surprise and delight when Mondo Macabro announced their upcoming release of nearly forgotten 1983 classic, THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD! Featuring Paul Naschy in his role as Waldemar Daninsky, a man forever in search of a cure for his lycanthropy, this film takes our tormented hero to the island nation of Japan where he hopes to end his monstrous curse! Promising werewolf hijinks, samurai battles, and even a duel with a real tiger, I am 100% sold on adding this film to my collection!

Synopsis: THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD is the last great film from Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy. Although he would go on making and planning films until his death in 2009, he never again attempted the epic sweep and grandeur of this 10th entry into the saga of Waldemar Daninsky, a man afflicted by the curse of lycanthropy.

In this film, we get for the first time an origin story of how the Daninsky curse began back in the 10th century. We then move forward to 16th century Japan where Daninsky has traveled in search of a cure to his affliction. Co-starring Japanese stage and screen veteran Shigeru Amachi, and shot in the studios of Toshiro Mifune, THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD is a highly successful and colorful melding of European werewolf legends and dark Japanese fantasy. It features a fight between werewolf and tiger, an evil scarlet-cloaked witch who imprisons Daninsky, a sword fight with a troupe of ghost samurai, and many other unforgettable scenes!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 115 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1) & Fullscreen (4:3)
Audio - PCM Mono

Extras:
  • NEW! 4k RESTORATION FROM A FILM NEGATIVE!
  • NEW! Cover art by artist Rick Melton!
  • The Smile of the Wolf – Interview with star Paul Naschy.

Scream Factory Brings Two More Hammer Titles to Blu-ray: RASPUTIN - THE MAD MONK and X... THE UNKNOWN!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray of RASPUTIN - THE MAD MONK!
CHRISTOPHER LEE'S MOST CELEBRATED (NON-DRACULA) FILM ROLE, AND THE (SORT OF) SEQUEL TO "THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT" ARRIVE ON BLU-RAY DISC!

I really need to sit down and watch more classic Hammer flicks - to date, I've only seen maybe two dozen of them! And thanks to the continued efforts of Scream Factory, it seems that I'll be able to watch the bulk of Hammer's Horror and Sci-Fi offerings on Blu-ray disc before by the time 2021 rolls around!

Speaking of which, today Scream Factory unleashed two new Hammer Blus: RASPUTIN - THE MAD MONK, features Christopher Lee as the title character! I have not seen this one yet, but I have frequently heard that this was perhaps Lee's finest performance ever, second only to his famous reccuring role as Dracula! X... THE UNKNOWN is yet another Hammer title that has evaded me. While more of a sci-fi tale (which was supposed to be the first sequel to THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT), this film features scientists battling a radioactive subterranean terror!

If either of these sound enticing to you (and they should) then continue onward to learn all the details of these two new Scream Factory releases!

RASPUTIN - THE MAD MONK (1966)

Synopsis: Hammer Films' dual reputation for screen shock and flamboyant costume adventure meld in this tale of the real-life "holy man" whose evil charm held the fate of an entire nation in its grip.

In Czarist Russia, Rasputin (Christopher Lee), a peasant monk, mysteriously demonstrates his healing powers by saving a woman's life and asking only for wine and a Bacchanalian celebration in return. But soon Rasputin uses his evil charm and powers to become increasingly manipulative and violent. Ferocious, devious and other-worldly, this uncouth peasant ingratiates himself bit by bit into the lives of the sophisticated royal class ... Christopher Lee's multi-layered performance as Rasputin rates as one of the best portrayals in any film.

Now Available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber: THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN and LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD!

Blu-ray cover for Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release of THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN!
DOLPHINS ARE TRAINED TO KILL THE PRESIDENT, AND KIRK DOUGLAS DUELS YUL BRENNER FOR DIBS ON A SHIPWRECKED MAIDEN IN KINO LORBER'S TWO NEWEST RELEASES!

Well chalk up a few more movies that I need to see before I shuffle off this mortal coil Vault Dwellers! George C. Scott (PATTON, FIRESTARTER, THE CHANGELING) is a fantastic actor and probably lends an air of credibility to THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN where he teaches dolphins to talk - but little does he know that his test subjects are going to be trained to bump off the President of the United States! LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD (based upon the story by Jules Verne) sounds like a good time as well: Kirk Douglas plays a lighthouse keeper that battles a pirate (Yul Brenner) when a beautiful woman washes ashore on Cape Horn! Both movies are now available on Blu-ray (for the first time!) thanks to Kino Lorber - For the full details of each disc, please continue reading!

THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN (1973)

Synopsis: Doctor Jake Terrell (George C. Scott) has been training a pair of dolphins for years to understand and speak English. On the same day that he finally has a breakthrough (giving them a limited English vocabulary), a sinister spy group springs the dolphins from containment. When Doctor Terrell discovers they're to be used in an assassination attempt, he races to discover who's the target, and where the dolphins are, before the attempt is carried out.

LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD (1971)

Synopsis: A classic adventure from Jules Verne, the legendary writer of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days, From the Earth to the Moon, and The Mysterious Island!

On the bleak, storm-tossed southern tip of South America, a lonely lighthouse guards the world’s most treacherous—and lucrative—shipping lane. But beyond the forces of nature, the lighthouse keepers must also face an even more formidable foe, and soon the turbulent waters become the bloody battleground of two men who fight for control of the cruel Cape Horn and for the pleasures of a helpless, shipwrecked beauty.

Kirk Douglas (THE VIKINGS) is Denton, the iron-willed lighthouse keeper who confronts the murderous pirate captain Kongre, played with delicious malevolence by Yul Brynner (KINGS OF THE SUN) in one of his favorite roles. Samantha Eggar (RETURN FROM THE ASHES) is Arabella, an English noblewoman imperiled by her beauty, desired by both men. The only hope to save the seas and their many travelers flickers in a single dim beacon, known to sailors as THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD!

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 120 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for February 11, 2020 is Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of MY BLOODY VALENTINE!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow Blu-ray collectors and Happy (early) Valentine's Day! Though several Blu-rays have been pushed back a few weeks (e.g. Mondo Macabro's THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD) this week still features a fairly decent lineup of new titles - some of which you may even want to gift to your significant others!

Well Go USA brings Takashi Miike's FIRST LOVE to Blu-ray and DVD, Warner Bros. releases their recent SWAMP THING TV series, and Arrow Video delivers their single-disc (director's cut) release of ROBOCOP to those that may have missed out on their fantastic Limited Edition release from last year.

Lionsgate pairs up all five RAMBO films in one Blu-ray set (ditto for JOHN WICK: CHAPTERS 1 - 3), SHUTTER ISLAND comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in a new Steelbook release, Scorpion Releasing debuts THE KILLING TIME to Blu-ray, and Mill Creek Entertainment adds four more titles to its line of Retro VHS-style Blus, including HUDSON HAWK, NO MERCY, VIBES, and WHEN A STRANGER CALLS!

The final season of PREACHER is now available on Blu-ray, as is Troma's snazzy 2-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition release of TERROR FIRMER, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics gives both THE STING II and TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 their Blu-ray debuts!

With all these cool new releases, it would take something truly amazing to top them all and become my pick of the week. And that something is Scream Factory's new Collector's Edition Blu-ray of MY BLOODY VALENTINE! Along with a new 4K restoration of both the theatrical and "uncut" versions of the film, this release comes with a NEW director's commentary, tons of cast & crew interviews, and more!

There are (of course) other new titles out today - to see the full roster of this week's new DVDs & Blu-rays, be sure to scroll on down!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers and welcome to yet another edition of our weekly STOCK YOUR VAULT column! This week has some quality releases, but be warned: February 11th is bursting at the seams with lots of awesome new titles. So plan accordingly as we head into the week of Valentine's Day, and all of the treasures it holds! But first, let's take a quick glimpse of this week's new DVD & Blu-ray releases!

Now that the limited editions are out of print, Arrow just released their Special (i.e. standard) Editions of Frank Henenlotter's BRAIN DAMAGE, and the infamous Swedish Horror-Comedy EVIL ED, Kino Lorber Studio Classics gives HEARTBEEPS its Blu-ray debut, and Scorpion Releasing brings the long out-of-print teen sex comedy FRATERNITY VACATION to Blu-ray disc for the first time ever!

Scream Factory hits us with two new Horror titles, namely Lars van Trier's THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT and the Soska Sisters' RABID remake, Shudder brings MON MON MON MONSTERS to home video, Shout! Factory released THE NIGHTINGALE and WHITE SNAKE to both DVD & Blu-ray, and... yikes, there's a new DRAGONHEART sequel? (Yup! And it's called DRAGONHEART: VENGEANCE!)

But the big release this week is Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP, which arrived on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD disc courtesy of Warner Bros. An adaptation to the Stephen King book of the same name (and sequel to Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING), this new horror flick comes complete with both the theatrical and director's cuts, plus several making-of featurettes!

There are still other titles on DVD & Blu-ray that I haven't mentioned - to see the entire list, just keep on scrolling!

FRATERNITY VACATION Comes to Blu-ray Disc for the First Time Ever!

Cover art for Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of FRATERNITY VACATION!
JAMES FRAWLEY'S OBSCURE 80'S TEEN SEX COMEDY DEBUTS ON BLU-RAY DISC THANKS TO SCORPION RELEASING AND KINO LORBER STUDIO CLASSICS!

While I've seen quite a few teen sex comedies in my lifetime (e.g. PORKY'S, REVENGE OF THE NERDS, WEIRD SCIENCE, etc.) FRATERNITY VACATION is one that I've honestly never heard of! And that's a total shame because holy hell check out this cast: Tim Robbins (SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION), Stephen Geoffreys and Amanda Bearse (both from FRIGHT NIGHT), John Vernon (NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE and KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE), and Barbara Crampton (FROM BEYOND)! And oddly enough, this film was directed by the late James Frawley who had previously directed THE MUPPET MOVIE! If any of that info piqued your interest Vault Dwellers, then read more about this Blu-ray release below before you commit to buying it!

Synopsis: For Iowa fraternity brothers 'Mother' (Tim Robbins - JACOB'S LADDER) and Joe (Cameron Dye - BODY ROCK), the only way to score a paid vacation in sunny Palm Springs is to take along supreme nerd Wendell (Stephen Geoffreys - 976-EVIL). When they make a bet with a rival frat to be the first to bed a beautiful woman (Sheree J. Wilson - CRIMEWAVE), their getaway goes out of control. Now with the help of some bikini beauties, a bit of creative party crashing and a local girl (Amanda Bearse - FRIGHT NIGHT) with a very dangerous secret, the ultimate Spring Break is about to begin!

John Vernon (ERNEST GOES TO CAMP), Barbara Crampton (RE-ANIMATOR), Kathleen Kinmont (HALLOWEEN 4), Matt McCoy (POLICE ACADEMY 6: CITY UNDER SIEGE), Leigh McCloskey (INFERNO), Max Wright (Alf), Nina Talbot (CHAINED HEAT), Frank Ajaye (CONVOY), Charles Rocket (EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY) and Britt Ekland (THE WICKER MAN) co-star in this outrageous yet good-natured comedy that could only have been made in the 80s, filled with scary fashion, gratuitous nudity, sudden aerobics and music by Bananarama, Con Funk Shun and others.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 94 minutes | Region A

Coming to Blu-ray on February 4th: Lars von Trier's THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT and the Soska Sisters' RABID Redo!

MATT DILLON IS AN ARCHITECT (OF MURDER!), AND LAURA VANDERVOOT SPREADS A KILLER STD IN SCREAM FACTORY'S LATEST OFFERINGS!

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT finally makes its North American debut (it was released on DVD & Blu-ray in Australia by Umbrella Entertainment last year) and comes complete with both the theatrical and director's cuts of the film! Also due out the same day is the Soska Sisters' (DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, AMERICAN MARY, SEE NO EVIL 2) remake of David Cronenberg's RABID. I'm a fan of the classic original, which features Marilyn Chambers as the unfortunate victim that spreads a viral madness to every man she mounts, so I'm a bit wary of this contemporary retelling. Let's take a closer look at both of these new releases, shall we?

THE HOUSE THAT JACK  BUILT (2018)

Synopsis: Boundary-pushing cinematic visionary Lars von Trier (ANTICHRIST) returns with one of his most daring, masterfully provocative works yet. In five audacious episodes, failed architect and arch-sociopath Jack (Matt Dillon) recounts the elaborately orchestrated murders — each, as he views them, as a towering work of art — that define his "career" as a serial killer. Mixing pitch-black humor, transcendent surrealism, and renegade musings on everything from history to architecture to cinema itself, von Trier fashions a radical, blazingly personal inquiry into violence, art, and the twin acts of creation and destruction. Uma Thurman, Riley Keough, and Bruno Ganz co-star.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 151 & 152 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.40:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & 2.0

Extras:
  • Includes Both The Theatrical Cut And Director's Cut Of The Film!
  • Sonning Prize: An Interview With Director Lars Von Trier!
  • Teaser Trailer
  • Theatrical Trailer
Scream Factory's release of THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT will be available on Tuesday, February 4th wherever Blu-rays are sold, and should cost between $18 - $19! Get your copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

RABID (2019)

Synopsis: A gruesome accident ... an experimental treatment ... an unstoppable nightmare. Jen and Sylvia Soska bring you a terrifying new take on the legendary David Cronenberg's RABID.

Demure and unassuming fashion designer Sarah (Laura Vandervoort - JIGSAW), horribly disfigured after a grisly collision, agrees to undergo an untested procedure involving stem cells to restore her damaged face. This miracle cure causes her to recover beyond her wildest imagination: Sarah now looks as beautiful as the models she works with. But as her confidence – and her sexual appetite – grows, it comes with a price: Sarah is now the carrier of a contagion that causes her lovers to become violent spreaders of death. As the disease spirals out of control, time is running out in the race to find a cure.
