STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 07/31/2018!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

July 2018 has come to an end Vault Dwellers, and it is leaving with a whimper instead of a bang. Seriously, this week's release slate is absolutely dismal, though there are a few choice titles you may want to pick up.

Warner Archive Collection debuts 1960's VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED to Blu-ray disc, Sony Pictures brings PENDULUM to the HD format, and those wonderful folks from Vinegar Syndrome released a double-dose of titillation with LIQUID ASSETS and SHOWDOWN.

But the biggest treat this weak offers up has to be Scream Factory's long-awaited Blu-ray release of PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING. Boasting a 2K transfer and new extras, this crazy sequel (that was briefly helmed by James Cameron) finally gets the love it so richly deserves.

There's not much else to highlight this week Vault Dwellers (aside from some more of those Frolic Pictures Double Features) but be sure to scroll down a few inches to see this week's list of new DVDs & Blu-ray discs!

PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING Flaps Its Way to Blu-ray on July 31st!

SCREAM FACTORY GIVES THIS INFAMOUS SEQUEL  ITS BLU-RAY DEBUT WITH A NEW 2K TRANSFER & EXTRAS!

The 80s were a magical time Vault Dwellers. Anyone with a handful of cash, a camera, and a dream (and maybe some semblance of a plot) could shoot a movie. This led to the creation of some of the craziest films ever committed to celluloid. Nothing was off-limits and nothing was out of the question. The boundaries of special effects, suspension of an audience's disbelief, and good taste were all pushed to their very limits!

Which brings us to PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING. Released in 1981, this bizarre sequel to Joe Dante's original classic was partially directed by James Cameron, scored by Stelvio Cipriani, and features Lance Henriksen and a legion of flying killer fish! While its production history is ultimately more interesting than the film itself, PIRANHA II is still a fun reminder that there was once an era in cinematic history where just about ANYTHING could get bankrolled.

Synopsis: It may seem like paradise, but just off shore, a new brand of terror has been unleashed ... While investigating the mysterious death of a diver, scuba instructor Anne Kimbrough (Tricia O'Neil, ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE?) makes a horrific discovery: mutated piranhas, with wings that enable them to fly, are responsible for the death.

As the body count rises, Anne desperately tries to convince the manager of the resort to call off the annual fish fry on the beach, but he's determined to give his guests the ultimate feeding frenzy. This exciting sequel to Joe Dante's original Piranha also stars Lance Henriksen (ALIENS, THE TERMINATOR, NEAR DARK) and is the directorial debut of James Cameron (AVATAR, THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS).

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 94 minutes | Region A

Extras:
  • NEW! 2K Scan From The Original Camera Negative
  • NEW! Interview With Actor Ricky Paull Goldin
  • NEW! Interview With Special Effects Artist Brian Wade
  • Theatrical Trailer
Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING will be released on Tuesday, July 31st and should cost between $20 - $24! Order yourself a copy now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

Also, while you may be celebrating the fact that you can now complete your PIRANHA movie collection, I must point out that you're still a movie short. In 1995, Roger Corman produced a forgotten remake of PIRANHA starring William Katt. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Scream Factory eventually releases that to Blu-ray as well!

Arrow Video Brings THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE & DOOM ASYLUM to Blu-ray on July 17th!

SLASHER AND GIALLI FANS WILL DEFINITELY WANT TO OWN ARROW VIDEO'S LATEST SPECIAL EDITION BLU-RAYS!

Chalk up two more great Arrow releases for films that  I'm not super familiar with. I'm a fan of some of Sergio Martino's other films (e.g. THE GREAT ALLIGATOR, ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN), and I do enjoy the occasional giallo film, so THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE is a must-see for yours truly! And I love slasher movies in general, so I'm definitely interested in DOOM ASYLUM as well! Continue reading Vault Dwellers to find out more about this duo of stellar releases!

THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE (1971)

Synopsis: One of the major consequences of Western Europe s post-war Economic Miracle was the proliferation of international travel. Eager to tap into audiences desire to experience the glamor of the jet set lifestyle, the popular filmmakers of the day rushed to make the most of the exotic locales at their disposal.

Arguably no other giallo captured this trend as vividly as The Case of the Scorpion s Tail. The film begins in London, where Lisa Baumer (Evelyn Stewart - THE PSYCHIC) learns that her husband has died in a freak plane accident. Summoned to Athens to collect his generous life insurance policy, she soon discovers that others besides herself are keen to get their hands on the money and are willing to kill for it.

Meanwhile, private detective Peter Lynch (George Hilton - THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH) arrives to investigate irregularities in the insurance claim. Teaming up with a beautiful reporter, Cléo Dupont (Anita Strindberg - YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY), Lynch resolves to unearth the truth... before he too ends up on the wrong end of the murderer s straight razor.

The second giallo by genre master Sergio Martino (TORSO, THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR), THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL combines stunning views of Athens and the Greek coastline with brutal bursts of violence, a typically tangled script by Ernesto Gastaldi (DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS), and a cast overflowing with Euro cult talent, including Alberto de Mendoza (A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN), Janine Reynaud (Jess Franco's SUCCUBUS) and Luigi Pistilli (A BAY OF BLOOD).

DOOM ASYLUM (1987)

Synopsis: If you thought SEX AND THE CITY 2 was a stomach-churner, you ain't seen nothing yet! Long before playing one of Carrie Bradshaw's best gal pals, actress Kristen Davis found herself up against an altogether different kind of horror in 1987's DOOM ASYLUM: a riotous mix of gore, gags and goth girl groups galore!

When a group of horny teens wind up on the grounds of a creepy abandoned asylum, they think they've found the perfect place to party. Little do they know that inside the building's crumbling walls lurks a freakishly deformed maniac, driven to madness by the tragic loss of his fiancée in a car accident. With an array of grisly surgical tools at his disposal, it's only a matter of time before the youngsters begin meeting various splattery ends at the hands of the ghoulish Coroner.

Helmed by director Richard Friedman (SCARED STIFF, PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERIC'S REVENGE), and also starring Penthouse Pet of the Year 1988 Patty Mullen (FRANKENHOOKER), DOOM ASYLUM combines outlandish gore and a wise-cracking villain to create one of the most wildly entertainingly blood-spattered slashers of the late '80s

KILL GIANTS, VISIT LOVECRAFTIAN WORLDS, AND ESCAPE A TROPICAL ISLAND PRISON IN UMBRELLA'S LATEST RELEASES!

THE ENDLESS (2017)

Synopsis: Living in poverty in a shared studio apartment in Los Angeles, two brothers (Justin and Aaron) receive a mysterious videotape in a box that seems to have been shipped through a hundred countries before arriving on their doorstep. On it, a Heaven’s Gate-esque cult member talks about an impending “Ascension.” We learn that the brothers were raised in this cult, and fled from it a decade ago because Justin pulled Aaron out when he became aware of an impending mass suicide.

But this tape seems to say otherwise their old family is alive and well, which opens a crack in the brothers’ relationship: Why did Justin pull Aaron away from the only family he’s ever known, lie about their mass suicide, and have him live this destitute life? On Aaron’s insistence, they go back to their homestead in order to get some closure. But when they arrive, they discover that the “cult” might not really be a cult at all, and they’re not certain just how welcome back they are. There seems to be a dark truth to the commune’s otherworldly beliefs that suggest the laws of the natural world may be very different than we assume, which propels THE ENDLESS into a Lovecraftian tale about brotherhood, giving up your personal autonomy, and history’s weird, malevolent tendency to repeat itself.

Welcomed back into the family of his widowed sister-in-law (Ellen Page - JUNO, SUPER), Senan attempts to restart his life — but is society ready to forgive him and those like him? AGFA and Something Weird Unveil Their GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS Blu-ray on July 10th!

"GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS" EXITS OBSCURITY AND ARRIVES ON BLU-RAY WITH A 4K TRANSFER AND NEW EXTRAS!

In the long list of things I never thought I'd hear myself say.... GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS hits Blu-ray tomorrow! Holy. Hell. I first discovered this cult oddity years ago when I picked up a cheap copy of Something Weird's DVD release of the film. To this day I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this tale of mutant sheep on the loose near a town that is forcibly trapped in the past by its mad mayor. Guess it's time to revisit it!

Synopsis: Gaseous vapors from an ancient mine cause the birth of a huge squealing embryo that is taken to the laboratory of a local mad doctor where it grows into a monstrous 8-foot mutant sheep. Got that? An 8-Foot Mutant Sheep! Meanwhile, the racist mayor of a historic Wild West tourist town attempts to thwart the efforts of a black man buying real estate by attempting to lynch him! Plans go awry, however, when the giant, wool-covered Lamb from Hell escapes from the doctor's lab and starts waddling across the countryside.

Spewing an orange phosphorous gas, the semi-prehistoric GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS terrifies the population, blows up a gas station, and even "dances" with a deranged hippie chick until it's lassoed by cowboys. The mayor then startles everyone by putting "the damaged mongoloid beast" on display as "The 8th Wonder Of The World!"

"Dear God! WHAT am I? WHY am I?!"

Starring cult favorite Stuart Lancaster (MANTIS IN LACE) as the malignant Mayor Silverdale, filmed in Virginia City, Nevada (an actual U.S. national historical monument!), and mixing science fiction, satire, and politics, the ultra-obscure GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS is easily one of the weirdest, wackiest, oddballest monster movies ever made!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 89 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - 2.0 Mono (?)

Extras:
  • NEW! 4K Restoration of the film from the only surviving 35mm theatrical print!

  • Berserker shorts from the Something Weird vaults!
  • Bonus Movie: THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT (1975), a new 2K scan from an original theatrical print!

Surf the Devouring Waves With Code Red's New Blu-ray of Lamberto Bava's MONSTER SHARK!

LAMBERTO BAVA'S CLASSIC CREATURE FEATURE FINALLY GETS THE LOVE IT DESERVES THANKS TO CODE RED!

For years Lamberto Bava's MONSTER SHARK was only available to us via Mystery Science Theater 3000's hysterical episode under its alternate title of DEVILFISH. But now Code Red has unleashed the original "Sharktopus" to Blu-ray with a new HD transfer and I couldn't be happier!

Arrow Video Feeds Your Blu-ray ADDICTION with Two New Special Edition Titles!

"THE ADDICTION" AND "VIGIL" NOW AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY COURTESY OF ARROW VIDEO!

Truth be told Vault Dwellers, I am not familiar with either of Arrow's newest titles, but they sound pretty interesting! THE ADDICTION was directed by Abel Ferrara (MS.45, THE DRILLER KILLER) and offers up a different take on vampirism, while VIGIL is the directorial debut of Vincent Ward (WHAT DREAMS MAY COME) and tells the tale of a young girl who tries to protect her family from a mysterious stranger that just may be the Devil himself. Sound enticing? Then read on fellow Blu-ray collectors!

THE ADDICTION (1995)

Synopsis: The mid-nineties were a fertile period for the vampire movie. Big-name stars such as Tom Cruise (INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE) and Eddie Murphy (VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN) flocked to genre, as did high-caliber filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola (BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA), veterans Wes Craven (VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN) and John Landis  (INNOCENT BLOOD), independents Michael Almereyda (NADJA) and Jeffrey Arsenault (NIGHT OWL), and up-and-comers Quentin Tarantino (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN) and Guillermo del Toro (CRONOS). Amid the fangs and crucifixes, Abel Ferrara reunited with his KING OF NEW YORK star Christopher Walken for THE ADDICTION, a distinctly personal take on creatures of the night.

Philosophy student Kathleen (Lili Taylor, THE CONJURING) is dragged into an alleyway on her way home from class by Casanova (Annabella Sciorra, THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE) and bitten on the neck. She quickly falls ill but realizes this isn't any ordinary disease when she develops an aversion to daylight and a thirst for human blood...

Having made a big-budget foray into science fiction two years earlier with BODY SNATCHERS, Ferrara's approach to the vampire movie is in a lower key. Shot on the streets of New York, like so many of his major works (including BAD LIEUTENANT) and beautifully filmed in black and white, THE ADDICTION sees the filmmaker on his own terms and at his very best: raw, shocking, intense, intelligent, masterful.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Black & White | 82 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & LPCM 2.0

  • Audio commentary by Abel Ferrara, moderated by critic and biographer Brad Stevens!

VIGIL (1984)

Synopsis: Vincent Ward once described as the "Antipodean Werner Herzog" made his feature debut with VIGIL, heralding his status as one of New Zealand's most distinctive filmmaking talents and paving the way for such equally remarkable and unclassifiable efforts as THE NAVIATOR: A MEDIEVAL ODYSSEY and MAP OF THE HUMAN HEART.

A stranger appears in a remote New Zealand farmland at the exact time a farmer accidentally falls to his death. The mysterious outsider grows close to some of the dead man's family, to the point where he and the widow become lovers. But her eleven-year-old daughter, Toss, struggling to come to terms with the death of her father as well as her impending womanhood, believes the intruder to be the devil and sets about protecting her family and their homestead.

Propelled by Fiona Kay's outstanding performance as Toss, she would earn a standing ovation when VIGIL screened at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival the first time ever that a New Zealand feature played in the main competition.
