STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 08/11/2020!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

As the countdown to my son's arrival continues, I'm trying to get things back to somewhat normal at The Vault and News Vault while I can! Though it's a few days late, here's yet another addition to our weekly Stock Your Vault column! I hope you've been able to put some spare cash aside fellow collectors because there's some cool stuff to buy this week!

Mill Creek Entertainment brought both EUREKA: THE COMPLETE SERIES and NEO ULTRA Q to Blu-ray, Scorpion Releasing gave A DIFFERENT STORY its Blu-ray debut, Tempe Digital returned to the realm of physical media with their release of OZONE, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics gave us a few new titles, including DATE WITH AN ANGEL, DIVA (SPECIAL EDITION), and THE QUEST (aka FROM DREAMING).

Scream Factory delivered a stellar new release of the Hammer classic THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and 88 Films gifted us Jackie Chan fans (who own Region Free players) a pair of Limited Edition Blu-rays of FEARLESS HYENA and DRAGON LORD! But it's MVD Rewind Collection that rules the roost this week Vault Dwellers - Along with a double feature of Bolo Yeung films (BLOODFIGHT & IRONHEART), they've also put out Collector's Edition releases of cult favorites MIKEY (complete with new feature-length making-of documentary!) and SPLIT SECOND, which got a new 4K restoration and hours of new extras!

MVD Rewind Collection Brings Cult Faves MIKEY and SPLIT SECOND to Blu-ray!

EVIL FOSTER KIDS AND A HEART-MUNCHING MONSTERS LURK WITH MVD REWIND'S TWO LATEST BLU-RAY RELEASES!

I've never seen MIKEY before (though I recall perusing the VHS cover a few times way back in the day) but I am super stoked to see that SPLIT SECOND (once a candidate for our WANTED ON BLU-RAY column) has finally made the leap to Blu-ray disc! Synopsis: Mikey Kelvin (Brian Bonsall - BLANK CHECK, Family Ties) has been a bad boy, only nobody knows exactly how bad. Tragic and deadly "accidents" seem to happen all around Mikey. SPLIT SECOND  (1992)

Synopsis: In the year 2008, the cops are better armed than before, but nothing has prepared them for this. Swift, sharp-clawed and deadly, something moves among them on the streets, in the alleyways, on the rooftops, tearing out human hearts and devouring them. Maverick cop ''Harley'' Stone (Rutger Hauer - BLADE RUNNER, BLIND FURY, THE HITCHER) lost his partner to the beast, and now it looks like his girlfriend Michelle (Kim Cattrall - MANNEQUIN, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA) is next on the killer's list.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Hello Vault Dwellers, and welcome to yet another edition of our world famous (not really) Stock Your Vault column! This week is a bit on the light side, but as always there are definitely a few titles you'll want to add to your growing personal collections!

MVD Rewind Collection kicks things off with their new Blu-ray releases of the animated classic THE POINT! and the psychological thriller MIND GAMES, Well Go USA released the martial arts epic WARRIORS OF THE NATION, and Scorpion Releasing just debuted the forgotten romantic comedy BEYOND THERAPY!

Mondo Macabro released DANGEROUS CARGO (making it's North American Blu-ray debut), SRS Cinema brings indie Horror anthology NECROLOGIES to Blu-ray disc, Panos Costmatos' MANDY gets a surprise steelbook release, and season one of the latest incarnation of THE TWILIGHT ZONE arrives on both DVD & Blu-ray!

Kino Lorber comes on strong this week with new Blus of THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN and LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, but I'm giving this week to Scream Factory for their latest Hammer titles: RASPUTIN - THE MAD MONK and X... THE UNKNOWN! RASPUTIN offers up the film in two different aspect ratios, and comes with a good number of extras, while X... THE UNKNOWN boasts a new 2K restoration and audio commentary!

Ringo Starr Narrates THE POINT: Coming to Blu-ray in February 2020!

THE CLASSIC ANIMATED FEATURE GETS A SECOND LIFE ON BLU-RAY ON ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY THANKS TO MVD REWIND COLLECTION!

While I have seen some great animated features like FIRE & ICE, WIZARDS, and HEAVY METAL, stuff like Fred Wolf's THE POINT passed me by. After airing on television in 1971 (narrated by Dustin Hoffman), the film did get a release on VHS & Laserdisc (where it was narrated by Ringo Starr), and showed up on cable (narrated by Alan Thicke on The Disney Channel) before fading into obscurity. But apparently THE POINT has garnered somewhat of a cult following over the decades, which prompted MVD to seek out a print in order to create a Blu-ray release.

While a search for the 35mm negative came up empty, the folks at MVD did manage to track down a 16mm print and strike the best 2K restoration they could muster from the materials made available to them. Fans of classic animation and people that actually saw this on TV in their youth will definitely want to check this out!

Synopsis: Years ago there was a place called The Land of the Point, because everything in The Land of the Point had one - the barns, the houses, the cars, everything - even the people. Everyone, that is, except Oblio (Mike Lookinland - The Brady Bunch), who was born round-headed. Since he had no point, Oblio - along with his trusty dog, Arrow - was banished to the Pointless Forest. Join them to see what wonders await these two intrepid travelers as they make their way on their amazing, song-filled journey of discovery!

THE POINT is based upon the album of the same name by Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson. According to Nilsson himself, "I looked at the trees and realized all the leaves came to points and even the branches came to points. I thought, 'Oh! Everything has a point, and even if it doesn't, there's a point to it.'"

Produced in 1970, the animated film version of THE POINT first aired February 2, 1971, as an ABC Movie of the Week. The film was directed by Academy Award winner Fred Wolf and produced by Murakami-Wolf Films in association with Nilsson House Music. Complete with story and songs written by Nilsson, and narration by Ringo Starr (CAVEMAN), THE POINT is a timeless enchanting fable for the whole family to enjoy!

MVD Rewind Collection's 50th Anniversary Ultimate Edition of THE POINT arrives on Blu-ray (and digital) on Tuesday, February 11, 2020! While the transfer might look a little rough, this is easily going to be the best THE POINT has ever looked or sounded before! And with over two hours of (mostly) new extras, the (current) $30 pricetag doesn't really seem all that bad! THE POINT is currently only available to order on AMAZON but will likely pop up on BULL MOOSE (and possibly DIABOLIK DVD) as the release date nears!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers, and welcome to yet another dose of STOCK YOUR VAULT! This week is actually packed full of good stuff from many of our favorite labels - I hope you've been saving your pennies!

Criterion Collection adds Michael Haneke's FUNNY GAMES to their line, Scream Factory rescues THE CHOSEN from obscurity, Mondo Macabro surprises with a new Blu of THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE, and Arrow Video introduces us to YAKUZA LAW!

MVD Rewind boasts a new 2-Disc Special Edition of BOOGIE BOY, Troma brings INDUSTRIAL ANIMALS to Blu-ray, Severin Films offers up SAINT BERNARD, and InterVision gives us the MASKED MUTILATOR in HD!

With GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS about to hit theaters in less than two weeks, Sony gives us a brand new 4K UHD of Roland Emmerich's oft-maligned GODZILLA, while Mill Creek Entertainment offers up THREE new titles this week including ANACONDA, EYES OF LAURA MARS, and John Carpenter's GHOSTS OF MARS.

In the end though, the title I'm most excited for is week is Kino Lorber Studio Classics' Special Edition Blu-ray of LINK. Along with giving this obscure killer ape flick a new 4K restoration, Kino has packed this disc with plenty of extras like a new audio commentary, deleted scenes, an interview with Director Richard Franklin, and more!

DOUBLE DRAGON is definitely on the shortlist of films vying for the title of "worst adaptation of a video game property ever," alongside MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION, STREET FIGHTER: THE MOVIE, and my personal favorite, SUPER MARIO BROS. - THE MOVIE. (I'm proud to say I actually own a Limited Edition Steelbook of that one!) And yet, DOUBLE DRAGON has apparently garnered enough of a cult following to warrant the Collector's Edition Blu-ray that we're looking at today!

Synopsis: EVIL HAS JUST MET ITS MATCH! From producers Don Murphy (the TRANSFORMERS franchise), Jane Hamsher (NATURAL BORN KILLERS), Alan Schechter (SHOWDOWN), writers Michael Davis (SHOOT 'EM UP) and Emmy Award Winner Peter Gould (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad) comes the cult classic movie based on the video game smash!

DOUBLE DRAGON roars to life with amazing special effects, spectacular action sequences, and a knock-about sense of humor. It's the year 2007, and what remains of L.A. is now "New Angeles," a city ravaged by earthquakes, tidal waves and vicious gangs. The evil tycoon Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick - TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY) is obsessed with finding the two halves of a talisman known as the "Double Dragon," which will give him awesome mystical powers.

Scream Factory adds the Nicholas Cage thriller 8MM to their catalog, MVD Rewind Collection gives NEMESIS a stellar Blu-ray release, and Mill Creek helps you finish off your KARATE KID COLLECTION with their double feature of KARATE KID PART III and THE NEXT KARATE KID!

Code Red gives STREET LAW its Blu-ray debut, Scorpion Releasing gives us new Special Editions of SILENT SCREAM and BLIND DATE, Warner Archive Collection finally puts JUDGMENT NIGHT onto Blu-ray, and Arrow Video gives WILLIE DYNAMITE a nice Special Edition Blu release!

To cap things off, Kino Lorber offers up a pair of classic titles on DVD and Blu-ray, namely THE HOUSE THAT WOULD NOT DIE and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO AUNT ALICE?, and most importantly, Sony Pictures brought the long-requested Supernatural Sci-Fi Comedy STAY TUNED to Blu-ray! Truth be told, I've never seen ABOMINABLE before, but it looks like it's a lot of fun! LIONHEART on the other hand I have seen an unhealthy number of times, as it's probably  my third favorite JCVD flick after BLOODSPORT and KICKBOXER. When his new neighbor Karen, is attacked by a gigantic creature, Rogers contacts the local authorities. But after the police and those around him dismiss Rogers as a delusional widower, he sets out to stop the abominable creature himself.

LIONHEART (1990)

THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING is one of my all-time favorite sequels! Heck, I'd even go as far to say that it is one of my favorite films! I have fond memories of renting this on VHS from the long extinct video store that was near my house, and watching it over and over again! And now that THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING has received (what appears to be) a definitive Blu-ray release, I couldn't be happier!

Synopsis: After her mother's mysterious death, Abigail Arcane (Heather Locklear) travels to the Florida swamps to confront her resurrected evil stepfather Dr. Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan). In an attempt to stave off the effects of aging, Dr. Arcane, assisted by Dr. Lana Zurrell (Sarah Douglas), combines genes from various swamp animals and human beings, creating an army of monsters known as Un-Men.

When Abby arrives, Dr. Arcane is hell-bent on taking his own stepdaughter's life in the name of science... that is until she is rescued by SWAMP THING in this must-see sequel to the original cult classic and based on the award-winning DC Comics series!

From Melniker and Michael E.
