ROGER CORMAN'S "A BUCKET OF BLOOD" GETS A 4K REMASTER FOR ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY!

It's been a long time since I've watched A BUCKET OF BLOOD, but boy do I fond memories of it. The film was directed by Roger Corman, and features THAT GUY DICK MILLER as a wannabee artist who literally turns murder into an art form, passing off his victims as twisted sculptures! Olive Films has gone all out for this release, giving Corman's cult classic a 4K remaster plus numerous extras (including the heavily-truncated "Super 8" version)! If you love this movie as much as I do, this is unquestionably a must-have! For those of you who are unfamiliar with this film and need a little convincing, please continue onward.

Synopsis: In honor of its 60th anniversary, this Olive Signature edition of A BUCKET OF BLOOD celebrates the film's enduring legacy. Shot in five days on a shoestring budget of $50,000, A BUCKET OF BLOOD remains one of the most iconic collaborations between Roger Corman and Dick Miller, and has rightfully earned its "cult classic" status.

With A BUCKET OF BLOOD the multi-talented Roger Corman singlehandedly created his own genre hyphenate: the black-comedy-beatnik-culture-horror film. Dick Miller (GREMLINS, THE TRIP) stars as Walter, a busboy at the hep-cat hangout the Yellow Door Café who dreams of artistic greatness. Inspired by the scribes and artists who surround him, Walter is introduced to the world of sculpture quite literally by accident – thanks to thin walls and a sharp steak knife.

From his very first piece – the aptly titled "Dead Cat" – Walter is hailed a genius by the art snob set, a wunderkind who, unbeknownst to his doting devotees, has raised murder to the level of high art. But when the tortured artist turns his creativity towards the human form, he's sure to make their blood run cold.

Rounding out the cast are Barboura Morris (THE TRIP, THE HAUNTED PALACE) as Carla, the woman of Walter's dreams; Bert Convy (SEMI-TOUGH) as undercover cop Lou Raby; Antony Carbone (THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM) as Leonard, owner of the Yellow Door; and Julian Burton (THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH) as Maxwell, the Yellow Door's resident poet-philosopher.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the new cover art for this release, but I can live with it because so much love went into everything else! I'm not a gigantic fan of FORBIDDEN WORLD personally, BUT if I was I would snap this release up in a heartbeat. The new packing has gorgeous artwork, and though there aren't any new extras, the new transfers alone would be worth the upgrade in my eyes. If you feel the urge to double-dip on this one (which will cost you about $20), get it now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY, which will also get you a rolled lithograph of the new steelbook artwork. (While supplies last of course!)

GALAXY OF TERROR (1981 - LIMITED EDITION STEELBOOK)

Synopsis: The mind's innermost fears become reality for the crew members of the Quest when they land on a barren planet to rescue survivors from the starship Remus. The crew investigates a giant pyramid on the planet, hoping to find the missing crew members ... only to find something deadly waiting for them instead.

Each crew member must come face to face with their darkest fears or perish. The crew of the Quest includes Edward Albert (THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS), Erin Moran (Happy Days), Ray Walston (POPCORN), Robert Englund (the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series), Zalman King (BLUE SUNSHINE), and Sid Haig (THE DEVIL'S REJECTS).

I recall adoring MUNCHIES when I was kid, but I'll readily admit that this GREMLINS rip-off hasn't aged all that well. MUNCHIE I am less familiar with, but I know its sequel MUNCHIE STRIKES BACK pretty well. This is definitely a nostalgia-driven double feature Vault Dwellers, and I only recommend it if you have kids, are familiar with these films and want to revisit them, or are continuing the insanely impossible quest of owning every Scream Factory title!

MUNCHIES Synopsis: Archeologist Simon Watterman (Harvey Korman - BLAZING SADDLES, HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I) discovers the Munchies while on an expedition in Peru. But Simon's evil twin, food entrepreneur Cecil Watterman (also Korman), won't let him enjoy his achievement. The snack food tycoon tries to abduct the Munchies to destroy his brother's career and take over his property. These junk food junkies prove to be too much to handle as they begin to menace the residents of a small town in any way they can. Move over ghoulies, ghosties and things that go bump in the night! The Munchies are here and they are bringing the fun with them!

Roger & Julie Corman Have Sold the Entire New Horizons Library to Shout! Factory and ACE Films HK!

SHOUT! FACTORY AND ACE FILMS HK ACQUIRED NEW HORIZONS' ENORMOUS CATALOG OF 270 FILMS!

Ack! I got this news just before I had to head off to the day job, so I missed the opportunity of being one of the first to report it! This announcement is HUGE, because it looks like a large number of Corman flicks may finally make their way to Blu-ray Vault Dwellers!

It was announced earlier today that both Shout! Factory and China-based Ace Film HK Company Limited (henceforth known as ACE) purchased the entire New Horizons library of TWO-HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FILMS (plus an action Sci-Fi TV series) from Roger and Julie Corman. The deal gives Shout! distribution rights in North America, Europe, Australia, and Russia, while ACE will handle distribution in Asia, Africa, and South America!

Shout! Factory has already released a number of Roger Corman Cult Classics to DVD & Blu-ray in the past (e.g. BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, PIRANHA, HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, DEATH RACE 2000, et al.), so I'm assuming that we can expect Blu-ray and DVD releases of these newly acquired titles! On top of that, both companies are planning to license the New Horizons catalog to video on demand and streaming platforms, and are planning on remaking several Corman classics (via Shout! Studios and/or ACE Films)!

I guess this means that Roger Corman is finally retiring from the film business, after a lengthy career of making and producing hundreds of movies and never losing a dime. While I realize the sad truth that Roger Corman is turning 92 years old in a few weeks, it is still sad to see this living legend call it quits. But on the bright side, we may finally get legit releases of various titles that have been long out of print! I'm not sure if any of the old New World Pictures-era films are part of the deal, but if they are, here's a brief list of Corman movies I'd love to see on Blu-ray:

I get an absolute kick out of the original DEATH RACE 2000 (which I just watched in 35mm at Hudson Horror Show this past December)! While I don't think this reboot will hold a candle to the original classic, I feel pretty confident that it'll be worth watching. What can I say? I'm a Corman fan!

Synopsis: Legendary filmmaking icon, Roger Corman, is back with his most outrageous film yet in this sensational, action-packed and darkly humorous reboot of the original DEATH RACE 2000! It's the year 2050 and America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government ruled by The Chairman (Malcolm McDowell).

The masses have been brainwashed with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the "Death Race," in which a motley crew of violent drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for shamelessly running people over and driving each other off the road. Another week, another dose of trailers! 2017 is shaping up to be an incredible year for cinema Vault Dwellers (lord knows we'll need the escape), and I'm about to give you four more reasons why! Keanu Reeves is back as everyone's favorite puppy-avenging hitman, Harrison Ford reprises his role of Rick Deckard, Roger Corman produces an official followup to his cult classic DEATH RACE 2000, and indie filmmakers hailing from France are prepping to create a feature-length 80s-style musical sci-fi epic! Let's get to it, shall we?!

TRAILER #1: BLADE RUNNER 2049
Release Date: October 6, 2017

Set thirty years after Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic, Ryan Gosling stars as K, a new "blade runner" that stumbles upon a secret that could send all of society spinning into utter chaos. Seeking answers, K seeks out Rick Deckard for information and aid! Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the original BLADE RUNNER, but it's been nearly two decades since I've watched it, so it's probably time that I revisited it. TRAILER #2: BLOOD MACHINES: TURBO KILLER II
Release Date: TBA 2017

Currently in pre-production, BLOOD MACHNES acts as a sequel to a short film / music video called TURBO KILLER. (Watch it HERE.) Set in a BLADE RUNNER-esque universe, the film follows two space hunters who chase after a female ghost that exited a rogue machine they took down. BLOOD MACHINES is currently still in its crowdfunding phase, and on track to raise enough for a thirty-minute short film. However, if "Seth Ickerman" and friends raise $666,666.00, they will gear up to create a feature-length tale utilizing their impressive digital effects, and music by Carpenter Brut. In the year 2050, the Earth becomes overpopulated. To help bring population levels down in the "United Corporations of America," the Death Race is developed. Held annually, this race allows participants to speed from coast to coast, picking off unlucky pedestrians along the way to earn points! Hmm.... though I thought this was a sequel of sorts, it seems like it might be more of a reboot? Guess I won't find out for sure until next January!




TRAILER #4: JOHN WICK - CHAPTER 2 
Release Date: February 10, 2017

Bound by a blood oath, retired hitman John Wick travels to Rome to help a former associate take control of an international assassins' guild! There's nothing much else to say about this, other than "HOLY CRAP, IT'S A NEW JOHN WICK MOVIE!" I loved the first one, so I am totally on board to see this sequel! Here's hoping it's just as good as, if not better than, its predecessor!

This awesome horror short was written and directed by Alex DiVincenzo, and is totally free to watch on Eli Roth's CRYPT-TV! Starring Nick Principe (LAID TO REST, HATCHET II) and Jaquelyn Fabian, this hysterical homage to SCREAM features a serial killer who can't seem to master death threats via text message. It's clever, well done, and even takes a funny pot-shot at A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE!
