A Trio of Dark Force Entertainment Titles Come to Blu-ray Disc on May 26th!

In a surprising plot-twist, numerous Dark Force Entertainment titles are now being distributed through MVD! The first batch of these "Collector's Edition" titles includes ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE, BREEDERS, and a Drive-In Double Feature of THE GATES OF HELL and PSYCHO FROM TEXAS! As far as I can tell, all three releases are pretty light on extras, but do come with collectible slipcovers! Let's take a closer look at these new Dark Force titles Vault Dwellers!

ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE (1982)

Synopsis: The son of Torren learns of his heritage, goes to avenge the deaths of his fellow villagers, and rescue his sister/love interest from the evil Dakkar and his spider cult. Ator battles giant spiders, swordsmen cloaked in shadow, re-animated dead warriors, and horribly hideous witches! ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE was directed by Joe D'Amato and stars Miles O'Keeffe, Sabrina Siani, Dakar, Laura Gemser, and Edmund Purdom, with a soundtrack by Carlo Maria Cordio (SHOCKING DARK).

Dark Force Entertainment's ATOR: THE FIGHTING EAGLE Blu-ray is disappointingly devoid of any Ator-related extras, so it's a hard sell for me to spend between $22 - $35 for this disc. But if you're a big fan of classic 80s sword & sorcery flicks, then by all means pick up a copy from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from MVD!

BREEDERS (1997)

Synopsis: It's an invasion of the most personal and terrifying kind. When a meteorite crash lands onto a Boston college campus and an alien beast is released, only one man understands its mission to mate. From the depths of an all girls college, the grotesque monster stalks his prey in a cat-and-mouse chase until the final conflict where only one species can survive!

Well there's not too much to get excited for about BREEDERS, other than the fact that it has an all-new HD remaster and has been fully color-corrected! If horny aliens are your bag, you may want to pick up BREEDERS, which arrives at retailers on Tuesday, May 26th and should cost between $20 - $30! DRIVE-IN DOUBLE FEATURE #6: THE GATES OF HELL (1980) & PSYCHO FROM TEXAS (1972)

Synopses: In Lucio Fulci's THE GATES OF HELL (aka CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD), a reporter and a psychic race to close said Gates of Hell after the suicide of a clergyman caused them to open, allowing the dead to rise from their graves.

PSYCHO FROM TEXAS follows a drifter/hitman that is hired by a local businessman to kidnap an oil baron. The hitman had been reared in squalor, suffering the abuses of his whoring mama. When the baron escapes his assistant must chase him while the hitman takes care of a few loose ends.

MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT BRINGS ISHIRO HONDA'S "THE H-MAN" AND "BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE" TO BLU-RAY IN A MUST-OWN DOUBLE FEATURE!

Having had a lot of success with their releases of MOTHRA and the seemingly endless ULTRAMAN series, Mill Creek is bringing two more Toho classics to Blu-ray! While BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE has been previously released to Blu-ray disc by Sony, THE H-MAN is making its debut on the format and comes with both the U.S. and Japanese cuts of the film! If you're a fan of Golden Age Japanese sci-fi cinema, you will definitely want to pick this 2-disc set up on June 9th!

Synopses: Travel back to the days before CGI, when special effects were real and the results were spectacular! Director Ishirô Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya bring these wildly colorful kaiju eiga (monster movies) to life in this high-definition double feature presentation!

THE H-MAN (1958) - Brought on by hydrogen bomb fallout, H-Man is a slimy green monster that dissolves human tissue and anything else in its path on contact. Scientists must figure out how to stop this creation!

BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE (1958) - The nations of the Earth unite in a common cause to fight off an invader from outer space, reflecting director Ishiro Honda's favorite theme of international cooperation!

I already own the Sony Pictures Blu of BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, but I'm highly considering picking up this double feature just for THE H-MAN! I could not find any info about special features (so I may be updating this post as the street date nears), but I'm hoping we at least get the commentary track for BATTLE ported over from the Sony disc, and maybe trailers for each movie. Even if this double-feature is a bare bones release, the $12 - $15 sale price makes this release a heck of a bargain!

Cult Epics put out a Limited Edition Blu-ray set of NEKROMANTIK 1 & 2, Warner Archive debuts SHAZAM!: THE COMPLETE LIVE-ACTION SERIES on Blu-ray disc, Arrow Video gives Stanley Brasloff's obscure TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN a fantastic Blu-ray release, and Well Go USA brings Andrew Lau's KUNG FU MONSTER to North American collectors!

Kino Lorber rules the roost this week, with a trio of new Blu-ray titles. BABY BLOOD (aka THE EVIL WITHIN) is a gory French shocker featuring a bloodthirsty creature that is gestating within a host's womb, HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD has the heroic demigod visiting the realm of Hades to save the woman he loves in this Mario Bava classic, and MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK is a silly romantic comedy featuring a kid coming back from the dead to take his girlfriend to the prom! Both BABY BLOOD and HERCULES have new 2K transfers, and all three titles come with new extras (e.g. THREE different cuts of Bava's sword  & sandal epic)!

Case in point, Jordan Peele: His movie GET OUT, which I saw during it's initial theatrical release, was really enjoyable, and I've heard a lot of good things about his followup film US (which I still have yet to see).

Now both of his critically-acclaimed tales of terror are available in a handy 4K double feature set from Universal! So if you've held off on buying either film, now's the time to add some Peele to your movie collection!

While I am tired of constantly upgrading the favorite films in my collection, I have to say that this is one double-dip that feels like it's worth it! Scream Factory Debuts the Completely Unrelated MUNCHIES & MUNCHIE on Blu-ray!

PERUVIAN ALIENS AND A MAGICAL CREATURE VOICED BY DOM DELUISE INHABIT SCREAM FACTORY'S NEWEST DOUBLE FEATURE!

I recall adoring MUNCHIES when I was kid, but I'll readily admit that this GREMLINS rip-off hasn't aged all that well. MUNCHIE I am less familiar with, but I know its sequel MUNCHIE STRIKES BACK pretty well. This is definitely a nostalgia-driven double feature Vault Dwellers, and I only recommend it if you have kids, are familiar with these films and want to revisit them, or are continuing the insanely impossible quest of owning every Scream Factory title!

MUNCHIES Synopsis: Archeologist Simon Watterman (Harvey Korman - BLAZING SADDLES, HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I) discovers the Munchies while on an expedition in Peru. But Simon's evil twin, food entrepreneur Cecil Watterman (also Korman), won't let him enjoy his achievement. The snack food tycoon tries to abduct the Munchies to destroy his brother's career and take over his property. These junk food junkies prove to be too much to handle as they begin to menace the residents of a small town in any way they can. Move over ghoulies, ghosties and things that go bump in the night! The Munchies are here and they are bringing the fun with them!

Munchie is the ever-hungry and hilarious mysterious creature from another world who delivers flying pizzas and brings on the parties! With the help of Munchie and loony Professor Cruikshank (Arte Johnson), Gage evens the score on his school's bullies as well as his mom's boyfriend and has the greatest summer ever!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 10/02/2018!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Welcome to October Vault Dwellers! Halloween is just four weeks away, and you know what that means: TONS of Horror flicks on DVD and Blu-ray! But unlike previous months, the stream of new titles will be constant! I really hope you all have been saving up your expendable income, because you're going to need it!

This week is populated with dozens of direct-to-DVD and indie titles, a bunch of double feature Blus, and some newer genre titles like MOLLY, DEATH RACE: BEYOND ANARCHY, TALES FROM THE HOOD 2, and THE FIRST PURGE.

Scream Factory brings IFC Midnight's FERAL to DVD & Blu-ray, Umbrella Entertainment debuts NEXT OF KIN as part of their Ozploitation Classics line, and there's a slew of new (Region B) titles from Indicator available on Friday, namely THE MIND OF MR. SOAMES, THE COLLECTOR, BORN OF FIRE, and ABSOLUTION.

But in my eyes, Kino Lorber Studio Classics wins the week with their Blu-ray release of THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE, as well as the early adventures of Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak in new Special Editions of THE NIGHT STALKER and THE NIGHT STRANGLER. Both Kolchak discs feature new 4K restorations of the classic made-for-TV fright flicks, plus a good number of extras! I've definitely gotta get my hands on those in the near future!

UPDATE (10/02/2018): The street date for Mill Creek's NIGHTWING / SHADOW OF THE HAWK Blu-ray has been pushed back yet again! Now it is due out on October 23rd.

I am so overcome with joy Vault Dwellers! When I saw this double feature Blu-ray pop up for pre-order on Amazon,  there was absolutely NO hesitation when I added it to my cart. Both NIGHTWING and SHADOW OF THE HAWK were both staples of my youth, and I have fond memories of watching them late at night on TNT.

NIGHTWING is a supernatural thriller disguised as a "nature strikes back" flick, and has flocks of vampire bats attacking people in the deserts of New Mexico. SHADOW OF THE HAWK is an adventure tale about Jan-Michael Vincent accepting his role as a medicine man in order to defeat an evil witch! This one has some truly eerie moments, and one particularly memorable scene where a demonic car crashes into an invisible wall! (Such a cool effect!)

I haven't seen any reviews about the film transfers yet, but they have to be better than the VHS-rips I've been watching for the past decade! Regardless, next week I'll be excitedly popping this disc into my Blu-ray player, and taking a trip down memory lane!

NIGHTWING Synopsis: A wave of mysterious deaths on a Native American reservation in New Mexico are being investigated and…it's killer bats! Directed by Arthur Hiller, and starring Nick Mancuso (DEATH SHIP, UNDER SIEGE), David Warner (WAXWORK, TIME AFTER TIME), Kathryn Harrold (RAW DEAL), Stephen Macht (GRAVEYARD SHIFT, THE MONSTER SQUAD), and Strother Martin (COOL HAND LUKE, THE WILD BUNCH).


SHADOW OF THE HAWK Synopsis: The aging Indian medicine man Old Man Hawk arrives in the city to request help of his grandson Mike, a successful business executive. Old Man Hawk is fighting a sorcerous war with the witch Dsonqua who was executed two hundred years before and is now seeking revenge. Mike, who has no interest in the Indian ways, is reluctantly drawn in to helping.

Joined by a woman journalist named Maureen, Mike agrees to drive his grandfather three hundred miles home. But along the way Dsonqua increases her efforts and summons magical forces to destroy them. Directed by George McCowan and Daryl Duke, and starring Jan-Michael Vincent (THE MECHANIC, WHITE LINE FEVER), Chief Dan George (LITTLE BIG MAN, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES), Anna Hagan, and Marilyn Hassett (TWO-MINUTE WARNING, MESSENGER OF DEATH).

UMBRELLA RELEASES ANOTHER "CANNON CLASSICS" DOUBLE FEATURE, FEATURING DEATH WISH 4 & 5! 

More Charles Bronson is always a good thing and Umbrella Entertainment has delivered unto us the much-needed (for our collections) DEATH WISH sequels that we've been missing. Sadly, this is pretty much the only new release that we'll be covering this month as the rest of Umbrella's slate is made up of more normal fare. Those titles will be listed at the bottom of this post, as we typically do here at The Vault.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
* Umbrella is unveiling their new BEYOND GENRES line next month (06/06), and kickstarting it with awesome new editions of DAGON, RE-ANIMATOR (which will contain the Integral Cut), as well as its two sequels, BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR and BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR.

* They are also bringing THE BEASTMASTER to Blu-ray on June 6th! The disc will have an audio commentary with director Don Coscarelli and an hour-long making-of featurette!

* RAZORBACK is going to be part of Umbrella's BEYOND GENRES line - still no release date, but I'm thinking August at the latest!

CANNON CLASSICS DOUBLE FEATURE: DEATH WISH 4: THE CRACKDOWN (1987) & DEATH WISH 5: THE FACE OF DEATH (1994)

DEATH WISH 5 Synopsis: After battling on the streets in cities from coast to coast, vigilante Paul Kersey has moved back to New York. But when his beautiful fiancee, Olivia (Lesley-Anne Down), is killed and her daughter kidnapped by a kingpin of the underworld, Kersey finds himself back in the war.

Kersey's plan to live anonymously is shattered when he learns that his fiancee was the victim of a protection racket run by her ex-husband, criminal Tommy O'Sheay. One by one Kersey hunts down the criminals. Once again upholding the law becomes his way of life... And this time it's for good.

DEATH WISH 5 was one of the final films produced by 21st Century Film Corporation, a company owned by former Cannon Group boss, Menahem Golan.

DAUGHTERS OF SATAN (1972)

Synopsis: Be careful what you witch for with this spellbinding thriller that delves into the realms of ancient covens and the conquistadors who loathe them. Tom Selleck delivers a commanding performance as James Robertson, an antique dealer living in Manila. James buys a Spanish painting dating back to 1592 from an art gallery ... because the painting depicts three witches being burned at the stake and one of the witches has an uncanny resemblance to James' wife, Chris.

But the similarity turns out to be much more than a coincidence when Chris becomes possessed by the spirit of her evil doppelganger. She soon meets two local women who resemble the other two witches from the painting. The three decide to murder James, as he may be a descendant of the conquistador responsible for the burning of the original coven.

When countless women suffer gruesome deaths after bearing half-alien offspring, scientist Laura Baker and hired assassin Press Lennox (Michael Madsen) use Eve (Natasha Henstridge, SPECIES), a more tempered alien clone, to find Ross and his virulent brood. But they underestimate Eve's maternal drive, and before long she escapes to mate with Ross in order to create a purer and unstoppable race that could spell doom for mankind.

As time is running out, the ultimate battle takes place in a chilling climax that puts Darwin's theory to the ultimate test... only the strongest species will survive.

Synopsis for SPECIES: THE AWAKENING: When brilliant college professor Miranda Hollander (Helena Mattsson, AMERICAN HORROR STORY) suffers a mysterious blackout and awakens amid the bloody aftermath of a mass slaughter, she turns to her uncle for answers. But when he reveals the shocking truth...that she's only half human, a clone from a hybrid of human and alien DNA, they must flee to Mexico to locate the scientist who created her.

Soon they find themselves locked in battle with a horde of rampaging, unstoppable hybrids... and time is running out before Miranda will inevitably surrender to the killer instinct that lurks inside her own body!

HUDSON HORROR SHOW DOUBLE FEATURE @ THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE - SEPTEMBER 19TH!

HUDSON HORROR SHOW INVADES THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE WITH YET ANOTHER INSANE 35MM HORROR DOUBLE FEATURE!

Hudson Horror Show is a major reason why I continue to live and breathe. The bi-annual event brings together hardcore horror and exploitation film fans, and the lineups at each show are to die for. It's a smoothly run film fest that sells out ridiculously fast, and for good reason!

On Saturday, September 19th, Chris Alo and his Hudson Horror crew will be taking over Theater #4 at the immensely awesome ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE in Yonkers, NY. (GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!)

During their last epic team up, The Drafthouse and Hudson Horror Show team brought us a great triple feature of SLEEPAWAY CAMP, THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION, and BLOOD BEACH!

This time around, come to the Drafthouse and we'll crack open a few cold ones and “get hammered” with THE TOOLBOX MURDERS! Starring cult horror icon Cameron Mitchell (BLOOD & BLACK LACE, NIGHTMARE IN WAX), seventies teen heartthrob Wesley Eure (TV’s LAND OF THE LOST) and adult film superstar Kelly Nichols, THE TOOLBOX MURDERS ranks as one of the grimiest horror films ever made.  

Originally released in the spring of 1978, this somewhat forgotten slasher preceded both HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13th and features so many death scenes using tools, that it should have been sponsored by Craftsman!  Forget the 2004 remake by Tobe Hooper, the original film still packs quite a punch in the blood and nudity department and tonally is still creepy as hell and just generally “unsettling.”

In the UK this was one of the original “Video Nasties” which saw the movie banned in England for nearly 20 years. Now you can see it all, back on the big screen and from glorious 35mm film!

The second feature at the Alamo/Hudson Horror Show team up is an even more obscure title, the completely overlooked and underappreciated monster bash SPOOKIES! Originally lensed in 1984 under the title "Twisted Souls," the original film was unfinished and therefore, never released. 

Several years later a second director was brought in, along with an entirely new cast, to shoot new footage to expand the unfinished movie to feature length. With two separate movies, multiple story lines that never intersect and two different casts mashed together, SPOOKIES is completely nonsensical and utterly batshit crazy, but so much fun!

While the title was surely a cash-in on the GREMLINS and GHOULIES craze, this “R” rated monster movie has very little to do with either of the aforementioned films. Featuring zombies, dead girls in coffins, giant spiders, assorted demons, a Grim Reaper, and more, this completely ignored haunted house/creature feature is a dream come true for lovers of old school practical effects! 

This movie was barely released theatrically in the United States in 1988 as a mere 17 prints of this movie were struck in 35mm and sent to theaters. Never released on DVD or Blu Ray in the U.S. and practically unseen in theaters. (Though it became a popular staple of late night cable TV!) With one of those rare 17 prints now unearthed, the time has come to bask in the rubber monster madness that is SPOOKIES!

The Hudson Horror at the Alamo double feature will feature the usual trappings of our regular Hudson Horror Show: Classic drive in trailers, trivia questions, giveaways, and of course, some vendors with assorted horror merchandise for sale. Add that to the Alamo’s delicious food, drink specials and film fan friendliness and you have another winning combination. 

The show starts at 8:00 PM and tickets are a mere $12 bucks! They are on sale and going FAST! I myself secured tickets just yesterday, and discovered that half the seats are already claimed!
