UK's Indicator label just released a bunch of Region Free titles this week including EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, THE STONE KILLER, and their HAMMER VOL. 4: FACES OF FEAR Limited Edition Collection, which contains THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, TASTE OF FEAR, THE TWO FACES OF DR. JEKYLL, and THE DAMNED.

After a few delays, Darkside Releasing just put out new Blus of PICTURE OF BEAUTY, SHOCK, and VIRGIN CHEERLEADERS IN CHAINS, while Scream Factory gives us a double-dose of 1979 goodness with their brilliant new Blu-rays of John Badham's DRACULA starring Frank Langella, and John Frankenheimer's PROPHECY, which is coming to Blu-ray for the first time ever!

But as great as those Scream Factory discs are, Arrow Video reigns supreme this week with their amazing release of ROBOCOP! Watch Out For Snakes! - EEGAH is Now Available on Limited Edition Blu-ray!

Cover art for Limited Edition EEGAH! Blu-ray!
THE FILM DETECTIVE TEAMED UP WITH SOMETHING WEIRD VIDEO FOR A SUPER LIMITED SPECIAL EDITION BLU-RAY OF AN MST3K CLASSIC!

Had it not been for a little show called Mystery Science Theater 3000, EEGAH (along with hundreds of other film oddities) likely would have faded away into obscurity. Released in 1962 and created by Arch Hall Sr. as a sort of vanity project for his son, (singer Arch Hall Jr.) this strange movie contains several musical numbers, and Richard Kiel (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, THINK BIG, HAPPY GILMORE) as a caveman still alive in modern times! And now, unbelievably, EEGAH has been given a 4K restoration and released to Blu-ray disc, thanks to the efforts of The Film Detective and Something Weird Video! But there are only 1,500 of these in existence so if you want a copy, order it immediately or forever live in regret!

Synopsis: Originally designed as a vehicle for his son, filmmaker Arch Hall Sr. assumed the roles of writer, producer, director, and actor to bring the film to fruition, utilizing pseudonyms like "Nicholas Merriwether" and "William Watters" to prevent his name from appearing multiple times in the credits.

Incorporating all of the rock 'n' roll, pop culture staples of the '60s, he added a rampaging, seven-foot-tall Neanderthal to create the thrilling comedy, which follows Eegah (Richard Kiel), a prehistoric caveman who is nearly run over by Roxy Miller (Marilyn Manning) on her way to a party. Forming a romantic interest in the young beauty, Eegah holds Roxy and her father (Hall Sr.) captive in his lair. It's up to local gas station attendant Tom Nelson (Hall Jr.) to rescue his sweetheart from the lovestruck brute.

Horror, Humor, and Sex Collide in Jeff Wedding's TENNESSEE GOTHIC!

Official poster art for Jeff Wedding's TENNESSEE GOTHIC!
APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEIVING IN THIS NEW INDIE HORROR-COMEDY, WHICH IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON DVD, BLU-RAY, AND DIGITALLY ON DEMAND!

I am forever playing catch-up when it comes to the constant stream of e-mails I receive in my inbox, and sometimes, for various reasons, I lose track of messages. Thankfully that was not the case for filmmaker Jeff Wedding, who sent me a press release for his latest feature film TENNESSEE GOTHIC... just over two months ago? (Ack! Sorry Jeff!) Having watched the trailer (several times), I've decided that I should definitely check it out!

Lucky for me TENNESSEE GOTHIC was released on October 15th and is now readily available! You can rent or own it digitally via Vimeo, or pick it up on either DVD or Blu-ray from GypsyRoot Productions' online store! (Which also contains a bunch of other TENNESSEE GOTHIC swag like posters, pins, buttons, and t-shirts!) To learn more about this darkly humorous contemporary Southern Gothic folktale, continue onward Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: From Ray Russell, fiction editor of Playboy Magazine, and author of horror classics such as Incubus, Sardonicus, and The Case Against Satan, comes TENNESSEE GOTHIC, a feature-length horror/comedy photographed on 16mm film!

Adapted from Russell's short story, American Gothic, and brought to the screen by multi-award-winning filmmaker Jeff Wedding , TENNESSEE GOTHIC is an audacious look at farm life told through the eyes of Caleb (William Ryan Watson), the teenage son of a dim-witted widower (Victor Hollingsworth).

When a beautiful young woman (Jackie Kelly) is found bloodied on a country road, the farmer and his son offer her refuge in their home. This living situation quickly escalates from hysterical comedy to maddening horror once the woman's true nature is revealed.

Playing on themes displayed in folklore (most notably the ballad La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats), TENNESSEE GOTHIC is at times uproariously funny while maintaining a dark tone throughout, including a healthy dose of debauchery and violence.

Scream Factory Delivers the Goods With Their New Blu-rays of DRACULA (1979) and PROPHECY (1979)!

Mark Maddox' beautiful cover art for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of DRACULA (1979)!
JOHN BADHAM'S VERSION OF DRACULA, AND JOHN FRANKENHEIMER'S CAUTIONARY TALE OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION BOTH GET STELLAR NEW BLU-RAY RELEASES ON NOVEMBER 26TH!

I reported on the previous Blu-ray release of DRACULA, but still haven't seen "Langella Drac" in all of his majesty. But I absolutely want to, especially now that Scream Factory has gone the extra mile and (quite possibly) created the definitive Blu-ray release of John Badham's film! (Plus that cover art by Mark Maddox is just absolutely gorgeous!) PROPHECY on the other hand is a movie I'm very familiar with, and totally adore! In fact, you may recall that it was previously featured on this very site as part of our WANTED ON BLU-RAY column back in January of this year! (I'm not saying there's a correlation there but... I think I can take a tiny bit of credit for this Blu-ray's existence.) Both films arrive on Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 26th and are loaded up with new special features! Read on Vault Dwellers to get all of the juicy details!

DRACULA (1979 - COLLECTOR'S EDITION)

Synopsis: Throughout history, Dracula has filled the hearts of men with fear and the hearts of women with desire. In this stylish production of Bram Stoker's classic gothic horror tale, Frank Langella reprises his electrifying, award-winning stage performance as the bloodthirsty Count Dracula as he goes in search of his ultimate bride. Meanwhile, the renowned and relentless vampire hunter, Professor Van Helsing (Sir Laurence Olivier - CLASH OF THE TITANS), seeks to end the dark prince's reign of terror over the citizens of Transylvania. Directed by John Badham (SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, BLUE THUNDER), featuring an all-star cast and a superbly atmospheric score by the great John Williams, DRACULA (1979) is an unforgettable adaption of one of the most enduring horror legends of all time.

Cover art for Scream Factory's new Blu-ray of PROPHECY (1979)!
PROPHECY (1979)

They begin to investigate a succession of mysterious and terrifying events: ecological freaks of nature and a series of bizarre and grisly human deaths.

Something unimaginably horrible waits in the woods ... something unwittingly created by man, that will become an uncontrollable, merciless machine of destruction. Veteran director John Frankenheimer (THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU) presents "a gritty, violent, and deadly film that [packs] a death punch with very vivid, nightmarish special effects..."

On November 26th, one of my dreams finally becomes a reality when John Frankenheimer's PROPHECY is officially released on Blu-ray! While I'm extremely happy at the number of interviews included on this disc, I admit that I'm a tad disappointed that it lacks any deleted/extended scenes or a Lee Gambin commentary! That being said, this is a day one purchase for yours truly, and if you've read this far, likely is for you as well! PROPHECY should cost between $24 - $25, and is readily available to order from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

WANTED ON BLU-RAY: DEATH MACHINE (1994)

WANTED ON BLU-RAY: Stephen Norrington's DEATH MACHINE!
WANTED ON BLU-RAY:
DEATH MACHINE (1994)

Rated R | Color | 99 - 122 minutes

UPDATE [05/08/24]: Kino Lorber Studio Classics is giving DEATH MACHINE its big Blu-ray debut on May 28, 2024! The two-disc set will contain THREE cuts of the film, two new audio commentaries, plus other new and archival extras about the making of the film! You can order a copy now from Amazon.com HERE!

Between 1985 - 1992, a young effects artist named Stephen Norrington was making a name for himself while working on creature & makeup effects on numerous films, including YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, LIFEFORCE, THE WITCHES, ALIENS, HARDWARE, SPLIT SECOND, WAXWORK 2: LOST IN TIME, and ALIEN 3! That's one hell of a résumé, right?

After cutting his teeth as a director on 1994's DEATH MACHINE (more on that later!), Stephen went on to direct BLADE for New Line Cinema in 1998. The success of that film was followed by another project he wrote and directed (THE LAST MINUTE, which seems oddly prophetic in retrospect), and it seemed like he was destined for bigger and better things! Then in 2003 it happened: Stephen Norrington's directing career ground to a halt thanks to a little movie called THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN.

This production was nothing short of a perfect storm of awfulness: Stephen was saddled with a disgruntled Sean Connery (who was by all accounts, openly disdainful of Norrington on the set), experienced frequent studio interference (the Fox execs decided the movie needed hit theaters in the Summer, rather than its intended Fall release), and, in mid-production, he had to search for a new special effects shop to work on the film! So it came as no surprise that Norrington quit directing soon after. As for the film itself, it was a moderate commercial success but was savaged by critics, disowned by Alan Moore (no shock there), and the focus of a plagiarism lawsuit between 20th Century Fox and.... LARRY COHEN?! (Yup! True story!)

Since the entire LEAGUE incident Norrington's done some effects work (most recently in HARBINGER DOWN), but has yet to return to the director's chair even though he's been attached to several projects including THE CROW reboot and THE LOST PATROL (which are both apparently mired in development hell). Personally I think Stephen Norrington got a raw deal, and I continue to patiently await his return to filmmaking. But until that day arrives, lets take a look back to 1995 when DEATH MACHINE was released, and Stephen's future as a director was so bright he had to wear shades!

Brad Dourif and his "Warbeast" in DEATH MACHINE.
Jack Dante takes part in "Bring Your Warbeast To Work Day."
Synopsis: In the not too distant future, a mega-corporation called Chaank Armaments is working on "The Hardman Project," a weapons system that is supposed to turn average troops into cybernetic super soldiers! But when a test subject goes on a killing spree and murders a bunch of civilians, there is (unsurprisingly) a large public outcry. In steps Hayden Cale (Ely Pouget), the new CEO of Chaank, who wants to provide transparency to the public and shut down the project. She's met with stiff resistance from the board of directors and the Hardman Project's unhinged weapons designer Jack Dante (Brad Dourif). Shortly after Cale terminates Dante's employment with the company and locks down Vault 10 (where his latest secret invention is housed), things quickly spiral out of control.

A trio of "eco-warriors" (named Sam Raimi, Weyland, and Yutani) break into the building with the intention of hacking/bankrupting Chaank, but end up getting tricked into cutting open the mysterious Vault 10, thus unleashing Dante's mechanical monster called The Frontline Morale Destroyer (aka The Warbeast). The technological terror immediately begins hunting for targets (by "sensing" their fear) and mauls anyone unlucky enough to be caught in its path. With Dante holding all the cards, the would-be eco-terrorists and Cale must find a way out of the locked-down building, or discover a way to defeat the dreaded Warbeast that is running amok!

DEATH MACHINE was written and directed by Stephen Norrington and is, essentially, a well-funded and ambitious fan film. The Warbeast has a passing resemblance to the Xenomorphs Norrington helped create in ALIENS and ALIEN 3, plus many of the characters are named after directors (e.g. Carpenter, Raimi, Dante) or inspired by the ALIEN films (e.g. "Scott Ridley," Weyland, and Yutani). Not surprisingly, the effects are fairly well done (the Warbeast is a brilliantly nasty piece of work!) and Dourif steals the show as Jack Dante (a role that got him nominated for best actor at the 1995 Sitges Film Festival)!

I missed out on this movie back in the 90s (when it was released to VHS) but saw it years later (either on cable or DVD) and it immediately won me over! Sadly, DEATH MACHINE has been out of print (in the U.S.) since 2004, and much like its writer/director, is overdue for a comeback! Here's hoping to see a Region A Blu-ray release in 2020!

Ely Pouget and Martin McDougall waste ammo on The Warbeast in DEATH MACHINE!
"SHORYUKEN!" (Actual dialogue from this scene.)
Availability: As is the case with the vast majority of titles I choose for this column, DEATH MACHINE is currently out of print. That being said, you can order new or used DVDs of the film from third party sellers on AMAZON and rent or buy DEATH MACHINE via Prime Video.

But for those of you who don't mind spending a little extra coin, you can obtain the Region Free German Blu-ray of DEATH MACHINE. This release comes in standard and limited editions: Both have the uncut version of the film, trailers, and an easter egg (i.e. a hidden featurette). The limited (to 3,000) edition is a three-disc set housed in a beautiful Digi-pack case with new artwork, and comes with both a Blu-ray and DVD copy of the film, plus a soundtrack CD!

You can pick up the standard release from AMAZON.DE or from DIABOLIK DVD! (Update: This disc is currently listed as out of stock!) The Limited Edition is a bit harder to track down, but it appears that DIABOLIK DVD still has some in stock!

Current Rights Holder: In Germany, Turbine Media has the distribution rights for DEATH MACHINE. Here in the States? Well.... DEATH MACHINE was released theatrically in 1995 by Trimark Pictures, and later on VHS by their now defunct Vidmark label. The DVD released in February of 2004 beared the Trimark logo as well, even though the company had already merged into Lionsgate in 2001. Therefore, one has to assume that Lionsgate currently has the North American rights to this film which means it could end up as part of the Vestron Collector's Series down the road!

Turbine Media's Limited Edition DEATH MACHINE 3-Disc Set!
Turbine Media's gorgeous 3-Disc Limited Edition that is shockingly light on extras.

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • While I typically kick off my wishlist with mention a new 2K or 4K transfer, I have to say that the picture quality on the German disc is really good, so I'm perfectly fine with it being reused for a Region A release!
  • Every cut of the film: DEATH MACHINE has at least three different edits - the shortened theatrical version (approx. 99 minutes), the director's cut (111 minutes - which Stephen Norrington is apparently not a fan of?), and the unrated cut (122 minutes). Also, I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I think there's an even longer cut that runs at 128 minutes!
  • A Making-of Documentary - It would be very cool to have a feature-length doc that walked us through the inception and production of DEATH MACHINE. Naturally it should include interviews with Stephen Norrington, Brad Dourif, Ely Pouget, and various other cast & crew members!
  • An effects featurette on the creation of "The Warbeast!"
  • Audio commentary with Writer/Director Stephen Norrington and/or star Brad Dourif!
  • Poster & Stills Gallery
  • Trailers
  • Soundtrack CD
Next year marks the 25th anniversary of DEATH MACHINE's theatrical release so a North American Blu-ray could hopefully be on the horizon! And while we can own Stephen Norrington's directorial debut on Blu-ray thanks to the efforts of Turbine Media, I would still very much prefer a release specific to our region of the globe, especially if it is loaded with extras! And when that day finally arrives, you can be sure that I will shout it out from the top of the highest (digital) mountain!

A TEENAGE CRIME SPREE AND A SEXY ADVENTURE IN THE LAND OF YIK YAK AWAIT YOU IN SEVERIN FILMS' TWO NEWEST BLU-RAY RELEASES!

Few labels have kept me on my toes as much as Severin Films has! While Scream Factory, Arrow Video, and Kino have been cranking out a lot of quality stuff, Severin has been comfortably occupying their own niche with a steady stream of exploitation titles from around the world! Speaking of which, Severin Films just dropped two new titles onto Blu-ray disc today: Penelope Spheeris' THE BOYS NEXT DOOR, which features Maxwell Caulfield and Charlie Sheen as rampaging teens, and GWENDOLINE, an adventure film filled to the brim with topless women, including Tawny Kitaen and Zabou Breitman! Patti D'Arbanville (BILITIS) and Christopher McDonald (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) co-star in this "descent into Hell" (BirthMoviesDeath.com) featuring music by Iggy Pop, Tex & The Horseheads and The Cramps!

Fandom Can Be Murder: 1981's THE FAN Arrives on Blu-ray on November 19th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of THE FAN (1981)!
SCREAM FACTORY BRINGS THIS OFT-OVERLOOKED SLASHER FILM TO BLU-RAY FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!

While THE FAN's subject matter isn't entirely new (I've seen multiple movies where a crazed fan stalks a celebrity), the cast of THE FAN pretty much sold me on this film! Pre-TERMINATOR Michael Biehn plays the titular obsessed fan that stalks Lauren Bacall - both star alongside James Garner, Maureen Stapleton, and Hector Elizondo! THE FAN hails from Paramount's vaults, so one really has to wonder what other treasures will be unearthed by Scream Factory in 2020! (Here's hoping for BUG, ORCA, THE EXPLORERS, STEPHEN KING'S GRAVEYARD SHIFT, and/or the 1976 KING KONG!) Until then, let's take a closer look at this upcoming release!

Synopsis: "He is Sally Ross' greatest fan ... and greatest nightmare." Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall (THE BIG SLEEP) and Michael Biehn (ALIENS, TOMBSTONE) tear up the screen in the edge-of-your-seat thriller, The Fan. Sally Ross (Bacall) is a renowned Broadway star, glamorous celebrity, and the object of adoration of countless admirers.

But among all the loving little people lurks a young man (Biehn) whose devotion teeters on the edge of madness. His impassioned letters to her are initially a source of pleasure, but as he attempts to realize his ultimate fantasy – and is met with rejection – the stakes are raised to terrifying heights ... which might bring on the final curtain for Sally.

Also starring James Garner, Maureen Stapleton, and Hector Elizondo, THE FAN is a twisted tale of fame and obsession you'll never forget.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 95 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! Number One Fan – An Interview With Actor Michael Biehn!
  • NEW! Fan Service – An Interview With Director Edward Bianchi!
  • NEW! Fanning The Flames – An Interview With Editor Alan Heim!
  • NEW! Audio Commentary With Cult Film Director David DeCoteau And Film Historian David Del Valle, Moderated By Scream Factory Marketing Director Jeff Nelson!
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • TV Spots
  • Still Gallery
THE FAN was initially a flop when it was released in theaters in May of 1981 (some believe this was due in part to John Lennon's murder by Beatles fan Mark David Chapman) and has been out of print since the early 2000's! But perhaps now, after nearly forty years, Edward Bianchi's film will finally find its audience! THE FAN arrives on Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 19th, and should cost between $24 - $26! Order a copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

It's Always a Bad Trip When the Devil Shows Up: DEVIL'S ACID Now Available on DVD and Digital!

Cover art for DEVIL'S ACID.
HALLUCINOGENIC DRUGS AND HAUNTED PRISONS APPARENTLY DON'T MIX WELL IN GARRETT KRUITHOF'S INDIE HORROR FLICK!

There is one thing about DEVIL'S ACID that has completely intrigued me, and that's the fact that the events in the film are apparently a bedtime story being told to two kids by his drunken dad! (THE PRINCESS BRIDE this isn't!) Yep, you read that right!

No dragons, or knights, or damsels in distress are in store for these children - they're getting a tale about drug-fueled sex parties in an abandoned prison where the Devil himself shows up to have some fun! And now that I've talked you (and myself) into watching DEVIL'S ACID, you can currently obtain it on DVD, or stream it instantly on AMAZON!

Synopsis: A wealthy man named Johnny holds a "Haunted Hot Girl Challenge" every year in a quest to sleep with as many women as possible. Things get out of hand this year when Johnny and the participants take a potent strain of acid (the titular "Devil's Acid") in an abandoned, haunted prison. Everything is going as planned until the Devil himself shows up to settle an old score.

DEVIL'S ACID is the feature-length directorial debut of Garrett Kruithof, and stars American Horror Story’s Drew Rin Varick, Ashley Dulaney (Justified), Jessica Lynn Parsons (S.W.A.T), Betty Jeune (THE FLORIDA PROJECT), Nina Leon (Longmire) and Eric Gibson!

Stills & Trailer:

The Devil's Acid in DEVIL'S ACID!

Unexpected hospital visit or bad trip? Find out in DEVIL'S ACID!

This prison looks suspiciously like an abandoned hospital.

Let the trip... BE-GIN!

The Devil likes to drop in sometimes to get on the spot product reviews of his ACID!

There's No Such Thing as a Free Ride - HITCH HIKE TO HELL Thumbs Its Way to Blu-ray on November 19th!

Cover art for Arrow Video's Blu-ray of HITCHHIKE TO HELL!
A MADMAN PREYS UPON YOUNG FEMALE HITCHHIKERS IN THIS NEW ARROW VIDEO RELEASE!

Irvin Berwick's HITCH HIKE TO HELL (not to be confused with the 1941 film of the same name) is a movie that I am totally unfamiliar with. Inspired by crimes pulled straight from newspaper headlines, the film follows a seemingly mild-mannered delivery van driver who picks up (often bra-less) young co-eds to satiate his (blood)lust! And only the only person that can stop his reign of terror is... The Professor from Gilligan's Island (Russell Johnson as Captain J.W. Shaw)?! Arrow Video has given this obscure title a new 2K restoration and extras, plus a reversible cover in case you don't dig the new artwork! To learn more about this upcoming Arrow release, continue reading!

Synopsis: Be careful who you hitch a ride with! All roads lead to terror in HITCH HIKE TO HELL, the delightfully sleazy cautionary tale from cult director Irvin Berwick (MALIBU HIGH, THE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS).

Howard is a mild-mannered momma's boy whose job running deliveries for a cleaning agency affords him a lot of time out on the road. It's not until he picks up young women who've run away from home that he transforms into a twitching, homicidal maniac, hellbent on meting out punishment for their "transgressions." Can the cops put a stop to Howard's demented spree before he claims yet another victim?

Influenced by the depraved crimes of the likes of "Co-ed Killer" Edmund Kemper, HITCH HIKE TO HELL is a bona fide American nightmare from the vaults of legendary exploitation producer Harry Novak (THE CHILD, TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN).

Disc Specs:
