Vault Master's Pick of the Week(s)!

Happy Valentine's Day Vault Dwellers! Since the release slate is still a little sparse this early in the year, I doubled up on the first two weeks of February! While there isn't a huge number of new titles to brag about, there are some definite must-owns sprinkled over the first half of the month that would be perfect gifts for the cult and exploitation film aficionado that you love and cherish!

Last week Scream Factory dropped their new 4K Collector's Edition of BUBBA HO-TEP, Disney released BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER onto all formats, Arrow Video gave us Special Edition Blu-rays of .COM FOR MURDER and THE VAGRANT, and Unearthed Films surprised us all with THE GRAND TOUR on Blu-ray disc!

Ronin Flix released BECKY and a double feature of FIST OF LEGEND & TAI CHI MASTER, Severin Films' long delayed Blu of MARDI GRAS MASSACRE was finally unleashed upon the world, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics put out THAT MAN BOLT onto Blu-ray! It's also important to note that new boutique label Terror Vision debuted ATTACK OF THE KILLER REFRIDGERATOR and THE HOOK OF WOODLAND HEIGHTS on Blu-ray, and Aussie label Umbrella Entertainment released a 3-film THIS IS ART collection featuring ALL HALLOW'S EVE, and both TERRIFIER films!

This week has a really small roster of new releases, but there are some real gems that you'll want to add to your growing/evolving collections. Indicator enters the Region A Blu-ray market with their cool new ENTER SANTO: THE FIRST ADVENTURES OF THE SILVER MASKED MAN, Shout! Factory brings two martial arts classics to Blu-ray, namely IRON MONKEY and ZU: WARRIORS FROM THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN, and Arrow Video just released their new GIALLO ESSENTIALS set, which contains THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF HER GRAVE, THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE, and THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR.

Well Go USA released the new blood-soaked action-horror film PROJECT WOLF HUNTING, and Mill Creek Entertainment (who just recently won a contract to release Disney titles to Blu-ray!) dropped two multi-film collections: The SCI-FI VAULT COLLECTION is a four-film set that contains 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH, CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN, IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, and THE 30 FOOT  BRIDES OF CANDY ROCK! THRILLERS FROM THE VAULT is an 8-film set that contains THE BLACK ROOM, THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG, BEFORE I HANG, THE MAN WITH NINE LIVES, THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU, THE DEVIL COMMANDS, THE RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE, and FIVE!

But my pick of the week(s) is being awarded to Lightyear Entertainment's new 4K release of THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING. Along with the big upgrade in the audio and picture quality, the disc has quite a few bonus features. All of the previous extras from MVD Rewind's release seem to be included (including a fantastic commentary from Director Jim Wynorski), as are two new surprises: A Rifftones music video (Your Ever-Lovin' Swamp Thing) and a new interview with producer Michael E. Uslan!

New From Arrow Video: Bill Paxton Is Not Home Alone in THE VAGRANT!

 

ARROW VIDEO GIVES CHRIS WALAS' DARK HORROR-COMEDY 

A NEW 2K RESTORATION AND SPECIAL FEATURES!

As a collector of other than fine film, I find myself frequently picking up discs that I often don't get to watch until months (or even years) later. Such was the case with my Scream Factory Blu-ray of THE VAGRANT, which I randomly chose one night as I agonized over what to watch. Deciding that I should try something I hadn't already seen before, I settled on THE VAGRANT and ended up loving this bizarre movie!

It's a lot of fun, has a great cast, and has a truly unique twist - needless to say, it almost instantly became  new favorite of mine! And now it looks like I'll have to double-dip on this movie because Arrow Video's release of the film is a big step up from the previous Blu-ray release! Join me Vault Dwellers as I take a closer look at this disc to see if it is worth picking up!

Synopsis: The 90s cult classic is back! Directed by Chris Walas - FX genius of GREMLINS and THE FLY - THE VAGRANT is a demented black comedy starring cult icons Bill Paxton (ALIENS, PREDATOR 2, NEAR DARK), Michael Ironside (SCANNERS, STARSHIP TROOPERS, TURBO KID), Colleen Camp (DEATH GAME, CLUE: THE MOVIE), and Marshall Bell (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE, TOTAL RECALL) in a grimy blend of satire and grisly terror.

Mild-mannered financial clerk Graham Krakowski (Paxton) buys a run-down starter home only to discover a vagrant, living in the empty lot across the street, keeps appearing inside. Attempts to remove the homeless man lead to a feud that spirals out of control and tests Graham's sanity as the vagrant engages him in twisted mind games, defiling his home, and framing him for gruesome murders.

Beloved character actor Bill Paxton stepped up to leading man status in THE VAGRANT and proved his extraordinary range in a role that runs the gamut of emotions and climbs to stratospheric heights of craziness. Newly restored from the original camera negative THE VAGRANT is a one of a kind movie that deserves a place in any cult film collection.

Wow! That's a whole lot of love for a relatively obscure film - looks like I'm definitely going to upgrade when the time (i.e. price) is right! Currently THE VAGRANT costs between $26 - $40 (yowza!) and is readily available from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, and ARROW VIDEO! The price is a little steep at the moment, but don't be afraid to wait a bit because Arrow Video titles go on sale several times a year! Still not sold on adding this one to your collection? Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Before we officially welcome February 2023, we've gotta say goodbye to January Vault Dwellers! The final week of last month had yet another small release slate, but as is usually the case, there were some definite must-owns in the mix!

Scream Factory brought the James Gunn-penned DAWN OF THE DEAD remake to 4K, and Severin Films dropped BLOOD FOR DRACULA, LEGACY OF BLOOD, and two Christopher Lee Euro-Horror classics, namely CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD CRYPT OF THE VAMPIRE! Kino Lorber Studio Classics leaped into the fray with a new Blu of THE ASPHYX as well as a new 4K release for the original THE ITALIAN JOB, featuring Michael Caine!

Warner Bros. brought the critically acclaimed BONES AND ALL to Blu-ray, Paramount continues their excellent (recent) track record of bringing catalog titles to Blu-ray with their new Steelbook of YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, and Vinegar Syndrome earns the crown of "pick of the week" with their standard edition of ROAD HOUSE on 4K!

Featuring the best audio & video presentation of this classic action flick to date, the disc is absolutely loaded with special features! Along with all of the previous extras from Shout Select's release from back in 2016, this new edition of Rowdy Herrington's perennial favorite tacks on an additional five new cast & crew interviews, plus new artwork from Thomas "The Dude Designs" Hodge!
