The 17th Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards Are Coming!

The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards have been on my radar for at least a decade now, and part of me always wanted to win one: Partially for bragging rights (don't judge, everyone's ego needs a little boost every now and again), but mostly for vindication. (Ha! You see?! Writing about movies and Blu-rays IS a worthwhile pursuit!) Imagine my complete shock when The B-Movie Film Vault showed up as a nominee last year for BEST WEBSITE OR BLOG OF 2017! Here's a quick video of my reaction:

Now I did not even come CLOSE to winning a Rondo (I had some pretty stiff competition from much larger sites that have writing staffs), but just to be included in the running was amazing! This year I'm hoping The Vault gets nominated again, even though I didn't create much content throughout 2018 on the main site. (But in my defense, I was very active on social media AND updated The News Vault quite frequently, so that has to count for something, right?) While I have no illusions about winning a Rondo, I would be very proud to be nominated again!

Speaking of which, the nomination process has already begun! So if you'd like to suggest a film, or magazine, or article, artist, "monster kid," or website (like The B-Movie Film Vault perhaps?) there are two ways to get your choices on the ballot:
  1. You may privately e-mail suggestions to David Colton at
  2. Join the Classic Horror Film Board, login, and make your suggestions in THIS THREAD.
Yes, it really is that easy Vault Dwellers! So if you have a few free minutes, please take the time to send in a list of nominees, and stay tuned for further updates on when the actual voting will begin in February! And for those of you who think I'm good enough to end up on this year's ballot, from the bottom of heart I thank you!

Mill Creek Taps into Your Nostalgia With These Collectible Blu-ray Covers!

I have to say that Mill Creek Entertainment has come a long way over the years. They've gone from a fledgling company specializing in bargain-priced DVD sets, to a Blu-ray powerhouse, offering low prices on Blu-ray titles that have surprisingly good audio and video quality! And now they're tapping into the nostalgia of the VHS generation with a series of cool Blus that are both cheap and highly collectible! Continue reading for a closer look!

Rated PG | Color | 102 minutes

Back in the late 80s - early 90s, I caught a ton of cool eco-Horror flicks on cable television. I watched in awe and excitement as humanity battled killer sharks, bears, alligators & crocodiles, piranha, crabs, and even SLUGS, but few captured my imagination more than John Frankenheimer's PROPHECY.

With its eco-friendly message of "don't pollute the environment, lest you bring about the wrath of ManBearPig," PROPHECY saw a VHS release in 1982, and got regular play on TBS, TNT, and even USA Network years after that before finally arriving on DVD in January of 2002.

With studios raiding their vaults in recent years, you'd think that this gem would have made the leap to Blu-ray by now, especially after building up a definite cult following. But sadly that isn't the case, and PROPHECY continues to languish in DVD hell, even as this cautionary tale of exploding sleeping bags celebrates its 40th anniversary!

Synopsis: Dr. Robert Verne (Robert Foxworth - the voice of "Ratchet" in Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS films) and his wife Maggie (Talia Shire - the ROCKY series) head to the forests of Northern Maine to investigate the impact a paper mill is having on the surrounding environment and the indigenous Native American tribe. Though the plant's director Bethel Isely (Richard Dysart - THE THING) assures Dr. Verne that things are on the up and up, the investigator quickly surmises that the entire area has been polluted with Methylmercury.

The result of this prolonged exposure to the hazardous chemical has caused a variety of health issues with the local natives, turned raccoons into crazed killers, and resulted in oversized fauna, most notably a monstrous mutant bear (portrayed by both Kevin Peter Hall, aka the original PREDATOR)! Eventually Dr. Verne, his wife, Isley, and a small group of other hapless humans (including Armand Assante and Victoria Racimo) find themselves hunted by "Katahdin," and must either exit the woods or find a way to kill the deformed beast!

PROPHECY is a shockingly well-made film with an impressive cast (though Armand Assante proves to be a bit melodramatic at times), but it definitely takes its subject matter way too seriously. The plight of indigenous people, the rape of the natural world, the evils of capitalism, and the dangers of pollution all take a backseat to what is essentially a silly rubber monster movie. And yet, that's part of this its charm. PROPHECY is an unheralded classic that could use a little more respect, and deserves a Blu-ray release dammit!

Availability: You can stream PROPHECY instantly or buy a digital copy in HD. For lovers of physical media you can still obtain the old 2002 Paramount DVD (which used to be like $5 - $10 and now goes for $13 - $75+!), OR you can get the Warner Bros. reissue (released May 21, 2013) which is currently going for around $25. The only major difference between both of these (as far as I can tell) is the cover art. You can also watch a low-resolution upload of PROPHECY for free on YouTube.

Current Rights Holder: Paramount, though I find it quite curious that Warner Bros. was the last company to distribute PROPHECY on DVD. If Warner still somehow retained the rights, there's a slight chance that maybe Scream Factory could put this title out on Blu-ray, as they have been announcing a lot of Warner titles as of late. (Mainly Hammer Horror films.) That likely isn't the case, therefore Paramount is the sole reason PROPHECY hasn't been released to Blu-ray yet.

And I'm going to focus my burning glare upon them until that day comes!

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • A new 4K restoration of the film from an archival print. (Though I will settle for a 2K scan all things considered.
  • Two cuts of the film. (Theatrical and Extended Cuts.)
  • Original Mono and newly created 5.1 Audio mix.
  • Interviews with surviving cast and crew - Talia Shire, Robert Foxworth, Armand Assante, Victoria Racimo, Tom McLoughlin, and anyone that helped bring "Katahdin" and the other creatures in the film to life.
  • Audio commentary by film historian and eco-horror buff Lee Gambin.
  • Deleted scenes and extended scenes.
  • Gallery of production photos and promotional art.
  • Trailers
PROPHECY's been a long-time favorite of yours truly, and I would love it if Paramount gave it the royal treatment! Even if we never get to see all of the excised gore or the steamy Foxworth/Shire love scene, it'd be great just to have a copy of the film in HD with improved audio quality! If you are as passionate as I am about Paramount's mutant melty-bear eco-horror classic, then let them know on Twitter and Facebook! Maybe if we make a little noise on the web (and if Hell freezes over), they'll take notice and take pity upon those of us that still collect physical media.

Umbrella Entertainment's January 2019 New Releases!

As I type up this post about Umbrella's latest titles, it occurred to me that I somehow totally missed sharing December 2018's new releases! So before we even get into the handful of new Aussie Blus and DVDs that are out this month, let me just quickly list last month's titles.

These discs were released on December 5th, 2018:

Now that we're back on track, let's take a gander at Umbrella's January titles! A teenager discovers that his neighbor is a wanted Nazi war criminal in APT PUPIL, which is based upon Stephen King's novella of the same name. In FELICITY, a young girl liberates herself sexually, while in CENTRESPREAD, a naive young girl has to decide between fame or love. In the slapstick sex-comedy PLUGG, a private detective is hired to dig up dirt on an escort agency that the mayor of Perth wants to shut down. Finally, 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH features Ray Harryhausen's Ymir, a rather tragic Venusian beast that is stranded on Earth! For more info on this titles (and Umbrella's full January roster) please continue onward!

* February is a rather sparse month with next to no Horror, Cult, or Exploitation titles. The only release of interest for you Vault Dwellers will probably be WALKABOUT, a tale about two orphaned children struggling to survive in the Australian outback.

Synopsis: Special effects master Ray Harryhausen (CLASH OF THE TITANS, ONE MILLION YEARS B.C.) brings you one of his earliest groundbreaking films.

On its way home from Venus, a U.S. Army rocket ship crashes into the sea of Sicily leaving Colonel Calder (William Hopper - REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE) the sole survivor ...or so it seems. A sealed container is also recovered from the wreck and when a zoologist (Frank Puglia - GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!) and his granddaughter (Joan Taylor - EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS) open it, the gelatinous mass inside escapes.

Overnight, it grows into a horrific monster that has doubled in size. In desperation, Calder calls in the Army to help fight the monster, which has taken refuge atop the Coliseum in Rome. But it will take more than man's weapons to fight the evil forces of the unknown and save the world from destruction.

To satisfy Todd's curiosity and earn his silence, Kurt Dussander (Ian McKellen - THE X-MEN SERIES) reveals his secret past... but all too soon it becomes clear that Todd is not the one in control of this twisted psychological game and that if he lives through it, he will learn a very dangerous lesson.

FELICITY Synopsis: Felicity (the gorgeous Glory Annen) is a sheltered teen who surrenders her blossoming body to a world of bold sexual adventure in this homegrown erotic sin-sation from sexy Ozploitation auteur John D. Lamond.

From taboo-breaking pleasures at an all-girl Catholic school to wanton delights in the exotic underground of Hong Kong, come join Felicity as she finally liberates her libido in the Far East with the help of Penthouse pet and Bond girl Joni Flynn (OCTOPUSSY).

Hailed as Australia's most erotic screen odyssey and celebrated in the documentary NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD, FELICITY captures the sensual and sumptuous flavour of BILITIS, EMMANUELLE, and STORY OF O in its classic tale of burgeoning sexuality and the ultimate search for forbidden ecstasy.

CENTRESPREAD Synopsis: In a world at the brink of the 21st century, where strict social stratification is rigidly enforced, where spending power is related to social utility rather than to productivity, and the only manifestation of violence is in magazine pages, a photographer whose special talent is mixing violence and sex, is told to find a new girl whose freshness will rejuvenate the pages of the magazine.

Gerard (Paul Trahair) not only fulfils his task but also rediscovers innocence and a world left behind by advancing technology when he uncovers Niki (Kylie Foster - QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER). But love is not in the Editor's plans and he offers Niki a choice - stardom or the love of a redundant photographer....

The directorial debut of Tony Peterson (veteran Ozploitation editor behind MAD MAX, FANTASM COMES AGAIN, and THE SURVIVOR), CENTRESPREAD depicts an ominous new society where old-fashioned love battles against sexual availability in a world invaded by rules, regulations and computer control.

PLUGG (1975)

Synopsis: PLUGG is a slapstick comedy in which a blonde from the Pussycat Escort Agency is stalked and ogled by a comic private detective named Plugg (Peter Thompson - MAD DOG MORGAN).

Private detective, Horatio Plugg, has been commissioned by Mayor Claude Marshall-Enright (Edgar Metcalfe - A CRY IN THE DARK) to get a complete dossier on the Perth-based agency so it can be shut down. The owner of the agency (Alan Cassell, BREAKER MORANT) wants to keep practicing his golf so gets Plugg on the case...

The inept Plugg thinks the arrival of horny farmer (Phil Cleary) who wants to get off with Kelli Kelly (Cheryl Rixon - Homicide) is the perfect chance to nail the Escort Agency. But as he's perving on Kelli Kelly, he's also being pursued by a disaster-prone policeman, Inspector Closer (Norman Yemm) and his constable side-kick (Reg Gorman). All parties meet in the climactic court case following a series of chases.

While the vast majority of the posts here at The News Vault focus on upcoming DVD and Blu-ray releases, I do try to branch out sometimes to promote independent films and directors. That's initially why I started up the "News Vault Spotlight," though last year I decided to expand beyond my admittedly limited scope to include other artists, such as musicians (i.e. Cohen over Coen) and now cosmetologists / makeup f/x artists!

A native of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania (the home of weather forecasting rodents and Bill Murray time loops), Sarah Burke is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Cosmetology-Arts & Sciences. Sarah quickly developed an affinity for creating makeup f/x while working at The Beauty Bar in Dubois, PA, and without any formal training she has done some truly amazing makeups, turning herself into various creatures, actors, and film characters.

Sarah currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA where she is practicing cosmetology. She hopes to one day break into the film industry, claiming that she would be satisfied with seeing her name in the end credits of just one movie. But until that day comes, she'll keep honing her craft and delivering some impressive makeup designs, especially during the Halloween and Christmas seasons! Speaking of which, let's take a look at some of her personal favorites, shall we?

Chucky & Tiffany

Oh my.... what big teeth you have!

The Pumpkin Queen!

Sarah's gaze will turn you to stone!

A bad case of road rash.

Marilyn Manson!

Bryan Cranston's Walter White!

The Marleys from The Muppet Christmas Carol!

Beware of the Wet Bandits from Home Alone!

Don't feed them after midnight, and keep them out of sunlight!

Thanks for taking the time to read about Sarah Burke Vault Dwellers! What I've shared in this post is just a mere taste of Sarah's impressive makeup - to see more of her work, be sure to follow her on Instagram! And if you happen to be a filmmaker who is on the lookout for someone to do the makeup for your film, definitely get in contact with Sarah!
