Fandom Can Be Murder: 1981's THE FAN Arrives on Blu-ray on November 19th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of THE FAN (1981)!

While THE FAN's subject matter isn't entirely new (I've seen multiple movies where a crazed fan stalks a celebrity), the cast of THE FAN pretty much sold me on this film! Pre-TERMINATOR Michael Biehn plays the titular obsessed fan that stalks Lauren Bacall - both star alongside James Garner, Maureen Stapleton, and Hector Elizondo! THE FAN hails from Paramount's vaults, so one really has to wonder what other treasures will be unearthed by Scream Factory in 2020! (Here's hoping for BUG, ORCA, THE EXPLORERS, STEPHEN KING'S GRAVEYARD SHIFT, and/or the 1976 KING KONG!) Until then, let's take a closer look at this upcoming release!

Synopsis: "He is Sally Ross' greatest fan ... and greatest nightmare." Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall (THE BIG SLEEP) and Michael Biehn (ALIENS, TOMBSTONE) tear up the screen in the edge-of-your-seat thriller, The Fan. Sally Ross (Bacall) is a renowned Broadway star, glamorous celebrity, and the object of adoration of countless admirers.

But among all the loving little people lurks a young man (Biehn) whose devotion teeters on the edge of madness. His impassioned letters to her are initially a source of pleasure, but as he attempts to realize his ultimate fantasy – and is met with rejection – the stakes are raised to terrifying heights ... which might bring on the final curtain for Sally.

Also starring James Garner, Maureen Stapleton, and Hector Elizondo, THE FAN is a twisted tale of fame and obsession you'll never forget.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 95 minutes | Region A

THE FAN was initially a flop when it was released in theaters in May of 1981 (some believe this was due in part to John Lennon's murder by Beatles fan Mark David Chapman) and has been out of print since the early 2000's! But perhaps now, after nearly forty years, Edward Bianchi's film will finally find its audience! THE FAN arrives on Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 19th, and should cost between $24 - $26! Order a copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

It's Always a Bad Trip When the Devil Shows Up: DEVIL'S ACID Now Available on DVD and Digital!

Cover art for DEVIL'S ACID.

There is one thing about DEVIL'S ACID that has completely intrigued me, and that's the fact that the events in the film are apparently a bedtime story being told to two kids by his drunken dad! (THE PRINCESS BRIDE this isn't!) Yep, you read that right!

No dragons, or knights, or damsels in distress are in store for these children - they're getting a tale about drug-fueled sex parties in an abandoned prison where the Devil himself shows up to have some fun! And now that I've talked you (and myself) into watching DEVIL'S ACID, you can currently obtain it on DVD, or stream it instantly on AMAZON!

Synopsis: A wealthy man named Johnny holds a "Haunted Hot Girl Challenge" every year in a quest to sleep with as many women as possible. Things get out of hand this year when Johnny and the participants take a potent strain of acid (the titular "Devil's Acid") in an abandoned, haunted prison. Everything is going as planned until the Devil himself shows up to settle an old score.

DEVIL'S ACID is the feature-length directorial debut of Garrett Kruithof, and stars American Horror Story’s Drew Rin Varick, Ashley Dulaney (Justified), Jessica Lynn Parsons (S.W.A.T), Betty Jeune (THE FLORIDA PROJECT), Nina Leon (Longmire) and Eric Gibson!

There's No Such Thing as a Free Ride - HITCH HIKE TO HELL Thumbs Its Way to Blu-ray on November 19th!

Cover art for Arrow Video's Blu-ray of HITCHHIKE TO HELL!

Irvin Berwick's HITCH HIKE TO HELL (not to be confused with the 1941 film of the same name) is a movie that I am totally unfamiliar with. Inspired by crimes pulled straight from newspaper headlines, the film follows a seemingly mild-mannered delivery van driver who picks up (often bra-less) young co-eds to satiate his (blood)lust! And only the only person that can stop his reign of terror is... The Professor from Gilligan's Island (Russell Johnson as Captain J.W. Shaw)?! Arrow Video has given this obscure title a new 2K restoration and extras, plus a reversible cover in case you don't dig the new artwork! To learn more about this upcoming Arrow release, continue reading!

Synopsis: Be careful who you hitch a ride with! All roads lead to terror in HITCH HIKE TO HELL, the delightfully sleazy cautionary tale from cult director Irvin Berwick (MALIBU HIGH, THE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS).

Howard is a mild-mannered momma's boy whose job running deliveries for a cleaning agency affords him a lot of time out on the road. It's not until he picks up young women who've run away from home that he transforms into a twitching, homicidal maniac, hellbent on meting out punishment for their "transgressions." Can the cops put a stop to Howard's demented spree before he claims yet another victim?

Influenced by the depraved crimes of the likes of "Co-ed Killer" Edmund Kemper, HITCH HIKE TO HELL is a bona fide American nightmare from the vaults of legendary exploitation producer Harry Novak (THE CHILD, TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN).

It's Time to RETURN TO NUKE 'EM HIGH Again With Troma's Latest Film!

I've always been a supporter of independent film, and I grew up on a steady diet of Troma flicks thanks to USA UP All Night! (Toxie, and Kabukiman, and Surf Nazis! Oh my!) But I admit that I haven't really paid Lloyd Kaufman and friends much mind since CITIZEN TOXIE and POULTRYGEIST. I guess a small part of it is that I grew up a bit and lost interest, but mostly it's because there's just too much competition out there these days. With so many indie filmmakers and distributors flooding the market week after week, trying as hard as they can to get their movies out to as many people as possible, it's getting harder to keep track!

That being said, the RETURN TO NUKE 'EM HIGH flicks look absolutely insane! Boobs, monsters, crazy characters, gallons of slime and bodily fluids, celebrity cameos - this pair of films has everything you could possibly want from a Troma production. And now, after seven years, the RETURN TO NUKE 'EM HIGH saga is complete with the release of VOLUME 2!

Synopsis: Welcome BACK to Tromaville High School! The once tone-deaf Glee Club has now turned into a vicious gang of Cretins, wreaking havoc upon Tromaville and two innocent lesbian lovers, Crissy and Lauren. As Lauren suffers the side-effects of a Cretin forced "duck rape," Chrissy follows a trail of tainted toxic taco crumbs, leading her to the crux of all Tromaville High School's mutating mires: The evil Tromorganic Foodstuffs Conglomerate and its salacious CEO, Lee Harvey Herzkauf!

With a duck/human hybrid baby in one hand and a laser in the other, the lesbian duo fights against Cretins, Monsters, and EVIL! Will they succeed or will Herzkauf and the Cretins reign supreme over Tromaville High School and the World!?

The Uncut Version of WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS' DORMITORY is Now Available on Blu-ray!

Cover art for Severin Films' Blu-ray/CD combo of WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS' DORMITORY!

I gotta say, Severin Films has been knocking it out of the park in recent years, with fantastic releases of WAX MASK, KILLER CROCODILE, ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK, THE CHANGELING, THE BLOOD ISLAND COLLECTION, and MORE! And now they've added the Italian/Australian co-production of WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS' DORMITORY to their growing catalog of exploitation cinema! The film is featured uncut with a new 2K restoration, several new special features, and a bonus CD containing the film's soundtrack! If that sounds absolutely mouth-watering to you, then continue reading for the full details of Severin's latest Blu-ray release!

Synopsis: Twisted Italian horror meets lurid German krimi in the 1961 EuroShocker filled with "genuinely eerie scenes and rather graphic maulings" (DVD Drive-In), now restored like you've never seen or heard it before! When an all-girl reform school is rocked by a series of grisly murders, it will unleash a nightmare of sexual corruption and lupine depravity.

Carl Schell (THE BLUE MAX), Barbara Lass (aka Roman Polanski's first wife Barbara Kwiatkowska), and Luciano Pigozzi (CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD) star in this infamous Italian/Austrian co-production – originally titled LYCANTHROPUS – directed by Paolo Heusch (THE DAY THE SKY EXPLODED) from a screenplay by giallo maestro Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) with a classic score by Armando Trovajoli (STRANGE SHADOWS IN AN EMPTY ROOM), newly scanned in 2k from archival elements recently discovered in a Rome lab vault!

EMANUELLE IN AMERICA Arrives on Blu-ray on November 12th, Totally Uncut and Remastered in 4K!

Cover art for Mondo Macabro's EMANUELLE IN AMERICA Blu-ray!

Originally only available on DVD from Blue Underground, EMANUELLE IN AMERICA finally arrives on Blu-ray disc, courtesy of Mondo Macabro. The film is fully uncut, and has been given a new 4K remaster! Admittedly, this isn't anything I'd personally add to my collection, mostly because it's a Joe D'Amato film (but also because horse-jacking and fake snuff films aren't my bag) but if you're a Laura Gemser fan, you'll definitely want to pick up this release of EMANUELLE IN AMERICA!

Synopsis: Emanuelle (Laura Gemser) is a fearless photo journalist and fashion photographer who travels the world in search of the exotic, the erotic and the downright deadly. Never averse to shedding her clothes in pursuit of a good story, Emanuelle arrives in America with a mission to expose the sizzling inner secrets of the jet set at play.

Armed with her striking feature, unique sensual talents - and a hidden camera - she's off… examining life as a love slave at a ranch run by a sadistic brothel master, investigating a bizarre spa for super rich sexually frustrated women, exploring the kinky side of a straight laced Republican politician, and finally uncovering shocking evidence of an international snuff film conspiracy.

Now for the first time ever on Blu-ray, this notorious and truly shocking film can be seen in all its high definition glory, totally uncut. Infamous director Joe d'Amato pulls out all the stops in this epic of sleaze and depravity. It's Emanuelle… but as you've never seen her before!

Disc Specs:

On November 12th, Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis Play ROAD GAMES With a Real Lady-Killer!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray of ROAD GAMES!

ROAD GAMES is a title that's been on my radar for some time now. Directed by the late Richard Franklin (PATRICK, LINK, PSYCHO II), the film stars Stacy Keach (THE NINTH CONFIGURATION, CLASS OF 1999, MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD) and Jamie Lee Curtis (who was at the tail end of her early "scream queen" days) who both end up playing a game of cat and mouse with a psychotic killer!

Though it is already available on Region Free Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment, the Scream Factory release of ROAD GAMES (which likely uses the same 4K remaster) has way more special features! When I finally add this to my collection, I'm definitely going with the Scream Factory disc!

Synopsis: Stacy Keach is Pat Quid, a lone trucker who plays games to keep his sanity on long hauls through the desolate Australian Outback. Jamie Lee Curtis is a free-spirited hitchhiker looking for excitement with a game of her own. And somewhere up ahead is a maniac in a van whose game may be butchering young women along the highway. But when the killer decides to raise the stakes, Quid's game becomes personal ... and the rules of this road are about to take some very deadly turns.

Director Richard Franklin packs plenty of Hitchcock-like twists and suspense into this sly shocker that was nominated for four Australian Film Institute Awards and remains one of the most surprising thrillers of the '80s.

Disc Specs:

Umbrella Entertainment's November 2019 New Releases!

After a relatively quiet October, Umbrella is back with a bunch of new releases that you'll want to add to your movie collections! In Kimble Rendall's forgotten slasher movie CUT, a killer starts knocking off a group of filmmakers that are trying to complete an unfinished fright flick, WWE wrestler CM PUNK stars as a stressed-out husband that is trying to remodel a house with a dark past in GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR, and Tanya Roberts stars as the titular character in SHEENA (i.e. the female BEASTMASTER)!

Also available this month are Tobe Hooper's immortal classic THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (in case you wanted to add yet another edition to your TCM collection) and a region free Blu-ray of YOUNG GUNS II, which features Emilio Estevez, Christian Slater, Lou Diamond Philips, and Kiefer Sutherland!

* On December 4th, Umbrella Entertainment is bringing Jeff Begos' BLISS to Region 4-locked DVD, which features a struggling artist that engages in a hedonistic lifestyle that somehow leads her to crave fresh human blood!

* Also available on that date is a new Blu-ray release of CONEHEADS, one of the few feature-length films based upon a SNL sketch that isn't terrible!

* December 4th is also the release date for Mike Ahern's EXTRA ORDINARY, a new supernatural horror-comedy featuring Maeve Higgins, Barry Ward, and Will Forte.

* IRON FISTS AND KUNG FU KICKS is probably the main Umbrella release I'm looking forward to the most next month. Produced by Veronica Fury (who also produced the fantastic ELECTRIC BOOGALOO doc) this new documentary chronicles the impact of Hong Kong cinema on the rest of the world's action cinema!

But every time the footage is screened, somebody dies...

Fourteen years later, a group of enthusiastic film students decide to finish Hot Blooded. Led by Raffy, the director (Jessica Napier - GHOST RIDER), and producer Hester (Sarah Kants - Ashes to Ashes), they manage to track down Vanessa Turnbill (Molly Ringwald - THE BREAKFAST CLUB, SIXTEEN CANDLES), the star of the original film who reluctantly agrees to return to Australia. After shooting commences on the original eerie location, the students start to disappear one by one. Now, they just have to finish the film before it finishes them!

Cover art for Umbrella Entertainment's DVD release of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE!

Synopsis: When THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE hit movie theaters in 1974, it quickly supplanted the previous year's top horror flick, THE EXORCIST, as "the most terrifying movie ever made." But unlike William Friedkin's film, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE eschewed standard production values and modern special effects in favor of a grainy documentary-like approach with visceral, low-tech, in-your-face visual effects.

This tale of five young students who unwittingly meet up with a sinister hitchhiker and the mask-wearing maniac Leatherface (whose mask is actually made from dried human skin), turned a lumberjack's tool into the stuff of nightmares and the blood-curdling scream into an art form!

Never Give Up! Never Surrender! - GALAXY QUEST Gets a Shiny New Steelbook Release!

Artwork for the 20th Anniversary Steelbook of GALAXY QUEST!

It's hard to believe that its been twenty years since GALAXY QUEST premiered in theaters. I think I saw it during its initial theatrical run, but most definitely recall owning it on VHS (and later Blu-ray disc), and I have to admit that I still really enjoy this movie! It's a fun flick with a phenomenal cast, that does a great job of poking fun at Star Trek and fandom in general.

And now GALAXY QUEST has apparently built up enough of a following to warrant a Steelbook re-release (i.e. repackaging) though it doesn't seem to have a new transfer or any new special features! But if you don't currently have this movie in your collection, then consider picking up the 20th Anniversary Steelbook today!

Synopsis: "By Grabthar's hammer," the intrepid crew of the NSEA Protector is back to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the uproarious classic GALAXY QUEST.

Years after cancellation, the stars of the Galaxy Quest television series cling to their careers appearing at sci-fi conventions and electronic store openings. When a distressed interstellar race mistakes the show for “historical documents,” Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) and his crew of has-beens are unwittingly recruited to save them from a genocidal alien warlord!

Featuring an out-of-this-world all-star cast including Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Enrico Colantoni, Daryl Mitchell, and Justin Long, this rollicking send-up of sci-fi fanaticism is as funny today as it was when it premiered in theaters 20 years ago.

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 102 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English Dolby TrueHD 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, & "Thermian" Dolby Digital 2.0

On November 19th, Larisa Oleynik and Don Frye Battle a Hairy Horror in ANIMAL AMONG US!

Poster art for ANIMAL AMONG US.

Bigfoot movies and documentaries have seen a huge resurgence in recent years: Charles B. Pierce's classic LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK recently received a 4K restoration, Fred Olen Ray just released a Boggy Creek series on Amazon Prime Video, and there have been numerous indie films about killer ape-like creatures in the woods. (e.g. MOMO: THE MISSOURI MONSTER, BIG LEGEND, PRIMAL RAGE, THE MAN WHO KILLED HITLER AND THEN THE BIGFOOT, BIGFOOT VS. ZOMBIES).

And now we can add ANIMAL AMONG US to the list... or can we? Honestly, I don't quite know for sure. Whatever the creature in this film is, it's big, furry, and fast - it could be a Sasquatch-like beast, or a werewolf, or a secret military weapon gone rogue! I guess the only way to find out for sure is to watch it on DVD or Video on Demand on November 19th!

Synopsis: This November, Christian Oliver (Sense8, HOUSE OF GOOD AND EVIL) and Larisa Oleynik (Mad Men, 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU) come face to face with hirsute terror in John Woodruff’s highly-anticipated horror throwback, ANIMAL AMONG US!

Fifteen years ago, two teenage girls were murdered at Merrymaker Campgrounds. The case was filed as an animal attack, the camp was condemned, and the killer never found. But something horrific still waits in those woods, ready to kill again.

FRIDAY THE 13TH meets DOG SOLDIERS in John Woodruff's new monster movie, which also stars Don Frye, Christine Donlon, Jonathan Murphy, Erin Daniels, Heather Tom, Jasmine Dustin, and Whitney Davis!
