WANTED ON BLU-RAY - Stephen King's Graveyard Shift (1990)!

Rated R | Color | 89 minutes

When I was growing up in my hometown of Scranton, PA between the late 80s / early 90s, there was an awesome mom & pop video store minutes away from the house called Electric City Video. With a cool sign (featuring neon pink lettering), its pleasant "video store smell" (a unique scent that can never be replicated), and impressive collection of Horror and Sci-Fi films on VHS. Sigh... it truly was heaven.

I always made sure to peruse the covers for the films that I wasn't allowed to watch, and how could I not? VHS covers were a definite art form, and beautifully designed to entice you to rent a movie. There were so many memorable VHS covers, but one that frequently caught my eye was Stephen King's GRAVEYARD SHIFT. The cyclopean skull with the bloody hardhat always drew me in.

I wouldn't actually get to see GRAVEYARD SHIFT until I was a teenager, when my uncle (a huge King fan that has since passed away) allowed me to borrow his VHS copy. While it didn't quite catch on with me then, I have since become a fan of this Stephen King adaptation, which is loosely based upon his short story of the same name. (It's one of the many tales contained in Night Shift!) With the upcoming theatrical release of DOCTOR SLEEP in November, plus the impending Blu-ray releases of THE SHINING (on 4K UHD), THE STAND (restored!), and SILVER BULLET (Collector's Edition!), I figure it's only a matter of time before GRAVEYARD SHIFT gets a physical media upgrade!

Synopsis: A drifter named John Hall (David Andrews - CHERRY 2000, FIGHT CLUB) gets hired at a rat-infested textile mill in Maine, that is run by an unhinged foreman named Warwick (Stephen Macht - THE MONSTER SQUAD, NIGHTWING). When asked to clean out the basement to make room for more office space, Hall and various other employees venture into the depths of the mill with Warwick, only to discover that rats aren't the only thing nesting beneath the ancient structure!

Stephen Macht's "Warwick" battles a giant bat-rat monster in Stephen King's GRAVEYARD SHIFT!
I'm starting to think Stephen Macht has an axe to grind against bats.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT also stars Andrew Divoff (WISHMASTER), Kelly Wolf (Tales From the Darkside), Brad Dourif (the voice of Chucky in the CHILD'S PLAY series), and Vic Polizos (C.H.U.D., NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, HARLEM NIGHTS), and features a team of special effects artists that are still actively working in Hollywood to this day! As far as book-to-film adaptions go, GRAVEYARD SHIFT is fairly accurate but makes some major changes in its third act, most likely due to budget constraints.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT is sole directorial effort of Ralph Singleton, who has spent most of his career producing films, including both PET SEMATARY movies and a pair of Eddie Murphy classics. His movie is a cool creature feature with a great cast, that totally embraces its own weirdness and absurdity. (In particular, that end credits "theme song" is SO bizarre!) By now, it surely has a large enough cult following to warrant an HD overhaul!

Availability: GRAVEYARD SHIFT is readily available on DVD and digital and super cheap to boot!

Current Rights Holder: This is an easy one for a change Vault Dwellers - Paramount owns the rights to GRAVEYARD SHIFT! And seeing as how Scream Factory has been dipping into the Paramount vaults as of late, I would not be shocked if they gave this movie its big Blu-ray debut!

Brad Dourif as "The Exterminator" in Stephen King's GRAVEYARD SHIFT!
"He's probably right you know."

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • New 4K restoration from an original 35mm film print! (But I'd settle for 2K!)
  • Multiple cuts of the film: Theatrical, Director's Cut, & Network TV Edit.
  • Audio commentary with Director Ralph S. Singleton!
  • Deleted & Extended scenes (If no other cuts of the film are included.)
  • Interview with voice actor Frank Welker (who provided sounds for the film's mon-star).
  • Interviews with the cast and special effects crew!
  • Trailers
  • Poster & Stills Gallery
GRAVEYARD SHIFT's 30th Anniversary is next October, and I can't think of a better birthday gift for the film, than a nice Collector's Edition release! The movie pretty much broke even during its initial theatrical run, but I'm certain it quietly found an audience on VHS and late night cable TV since then. And hopefully somebody out there (cough, Scream Factory, cough) can find it in their heart to finally bring this oft-overlooked Stephen King fright flick to Blu-ray disc!

Spectral Stompers & Graveyard Ghouls are Coming to Vinyl in October!

Cover for the Something Weird Spook Show Spectacular A-Go-Go LP!

The strange, yet magnificent alliance between Something Weird Video and Modern Harmonic continues with a super cool new LP release of the SPOOK SHOW SPECTACULAR A-GO-GO! I remember way back in the day when I had Something Weird's VHS release of MONSTERS CRASH THE PAJAMA PARTY: SPOOK SHOW SPECTACULAR (long since donated after I abandoned the VHS format) so I feel a little tug of nostalgia as I post about this new LP. If you enjoy cinematic oddities and collect records, then this might just be up your alley! Keep reading to see what this groovy LP/DVD combo offers up!

About This Release: From the 1930s until the 1970s a popular form of entertainment, quaintly called, The Ghost (or Spook) Show, enthralled America. Traveling magicians and illusionists went on the road and added horror elements to their regular (often predictable) stage acts. This appealed to youngsters eager for cheap thrills and chills. The advertising campaigns promised to “scare the yell” out of those “brave” enough to attend, and performances took place mostly at midnight in movie theatres that were decorated with outrageous lobby displays publicizing the shocking and scary things about to be seen - ghosts, ghouls, monsters, gorillas, mad doctors, and some things “so terrifying” that they couldn’t even be mentioned. During the course of the night, classic horror movies were shown, and there were contests with corny gimmicks and silly prizes.
The SPOOK SHOW SPECTACULAR A-GO-GO LP/DVD Combo comes with Everything Seen Here!
How does Something Weird fit in? Well, during 2001 SWV compiled what was to become one of their most popular and beloved DVDs, MONSTERS CRASH THE PAJAMA PARTY - SPOOK SHOW SPECTACULAR. It featured over three hours of rare Ghost Show shorts and trailers, radio spot audio, galleries of memorabilia, and commentaries with legendary living Ghostmasters. The folks at SWV were huge Spook Show fans and collected anything related to the subject including original 35mm film trailers as well as radio spots on promotional 45s and magnetic tape. So this was a dream project for them, and something near and dear to their bloody hearts.

Since its release, audio bits from the MCTPPSSS have popped up on radio stations and music compilations. People love them. So it just seemed logical that Something Weird do a Spook Show album. And like our old pal, Jim “The Mad Doctor” Ridenour, we’ve always believed that horror and rock ‘n roll go hand in hand, so what better way than to combine some rarely heard, fiendish surf and garage rock instrumentals with the trailer & radio spot audio and incidental music from the DVD? Now all groovy ghouls and goblins can time travel and have a Spook Show A Go-Go Party! (Just add your own ghosts and gorilla suits...)

Arrow Video Brings Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 and Aldo Lado's WHO SAW HER DIE? to Blu-ray on September 17th!

Blu-ray cover for Arrow Video's Limited Edition Blu-ray of Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2.

I'm a big fan of Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES, and yet, I've never seen it's sequel (even though I own the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release). I plan on changing that in the near future though - the dog flashback sequences alone seem worth the price of admission! And I'm still a neophyte when it comes to giallo films, which means I've never laid eyes on WHO SAW HER DIE? A Venetian murder mystery with George Lazenby sounds too good to pass up! If you're as curious as I am about these two new Blu-ray titles, then continue reading for a closer look!

Synopsis: The hills are once again alive with the sound of screaming in Wes Craven's hugely entertaining follow-up to his own groundbreaking 1977 film THE HILLS HAVE EYES. A motocross team on their way to trial a new super-fuel head out across the desert lead by Rachel, who, unbeknownst to the rest of the group, is a survivor of the cannibal clan which menaced the Carter family several years before.

Opting to take an ill-advised shortcut across the desert, the busload of youngsters drive straight into the path of the remnants of Rachel's demented cannibal kin - the menacing Pluto, and a hulking, blood-hungry brute by the name of "The Reaper." Made by Wes Craven immediately prior to his smash-hit A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 diverges from the grim tone of its predecessor in favour of fun action-horror thrills and spills replete with mutants, motorbikes, and - oh yes - dog flashbacks!

Blu-ray Cover for Arrow Video's WHO SAW HER DIE? directed by Aldo Lado and starring George Lazenby.

Synopsis: Former Bond star George Lazenby (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, THE MAN FROM HONG KONG) headlines this classic giallo directed by Aldo Lado (SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS, NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS) - as compelling for its haunting atmosphere, twists and turns as for its parallels with another great Venetian horror/thriller - Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW.

Sculptor Franco Serpieri (Lazenby) welcomes Roberta (Nicoletta Elmi - DEEP RED) - his young daughter from a failed marriage - to Venice, unaware that a disturbed child-killer is stalking the city's canals. When Roberta's body is found floating face-down in the river, the lives of Franco and his estranged wife Elizabeth (Anita Strindberg - THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL) are ripped asunder. Desperate for vengeance, Franco turns detective in a bid to track down his daughter's killer, and in the process unearths shocking evidence of depravity and corruption which implicates some of the most respected figures in Venetian society.

Released at the height of the giallo boom, this gripping mystery thriller boasts some of the most iconic names associated with the genre on both sides of the camera. Co-starring Dominique Boschero (THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE) and Adolfo Celi (THUNDERBALL), and featuring one of the all-time greatest scores from maestro Ennio Morricone (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?), WHO SAW HER DIE? thrills anew in its high definition debut!

Scream Factory Brings Us a Peter Collinson Double Feature on September 17th!

Scream Factory's Blu-ray cover for Peter Collinson's FRIGHT (1971).

Chalk up two more Scream Factory titles that I need to check out. FRIGHT's plot sounds suspiciously familiar, as it revolves around a babysitter under assault by an escaped mental patient (cough, HALLOWEEN, cough). As for STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING, I was hoping that it was some sort of crazy Peter Pan-themed fright flick, but instead it seems like it's more of a bizarre love story between a young woman and a gigolo/serial killer. Either way, both films have garnered my interest, and I'd love to add them to my always growing Scream Factory collection. If you're as unfamiliar with these two movies as I am, continue reading to sate your curiosity!

FRIGHT (1971)

Synopsis: Teenage babysitter Amanda (Susan George - STRAW DOGS, TINTORERA) arrives at the Lloyd home to watch their young son for the evening. But it seems that the strangely nervous Mrs. Lloyd is hiding a shocking secret ... a secret that has just escaped from a nearby insane asylum and is now desperately trying to get inside the house. What must Amanda endure to survive the ultimate night of Fright?

This creepy film, directed by Peter Collinson (STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING), also stars Honor Blackman (GOLDFINGER) and Ian Bannen (DOOMWATCH).

Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.66:1)

FRIGHT (aka I'M ALONE AND SCARED) comes to Blu-ray on Tuesday, September 17th and should cost around $22! Add it to your collection today by ordering it from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

Blu-ray Cover for Scram Factory's Blu-ray of STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING.

Synopsis: An ugly duckling yearns to leave her drab Liverpool life and move to swinging London to find her Prince Charming. But the big city holds some nasty surprises for the naïve young woman when she becomes obsessed with a handsome gigolo who may be a depraved serial killer!

Rita Tushingham (A TASTE OF HONEY) and Shane Briant (DEMONS OF THE MIND, CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER) star in this 1972 psycho-sexual thriller directed by Peter Collinson (FRIGHT, THE ITALIAN JOB).

Disc Specs:

It's Time to DO OR DIE, So Grab Your GUNS: Two More Andy Sidaris Classics Make Their Way to Blu-ray on September 17th!

Cover for Mill Creek Entertainment's DO OR DIE Blu-ray.

I've been sitting on a Mill Creek DVD set of Andy Sidaris flicks for some time now, and I still haven't watched anything other than HARD TICKET TO HAWAII. But it looks like I'll probably end up ditching that set to start collecting Mill Creek's Sidaris Blus, since they are reasonably priced, and come with new 4K restorations (courtesy of AGFA) and extras!

I'm pretty excited for these two new titles too, because where else can you see Pat Morita and Eric Estrada play bad guys that get taken down by beautiful gun-toting women?! If that sounds like your jam, then continue reading more about these new Andy Sidaris Blu-rays!

DO OR DIE (1991)

Synopsis: A pair of female agents is targeted for elimination by an Asian criminal kingpin out for revenge. The evil mastermind sends out an army of assassins with the same mission, to kill agents Donna and Nicole!

On September 17th, the Joke's on You When CLOWNADO Touches Down on DVD!

In the aftermath of SHARKNADO and LAVALANTULA, I guess it was only a matter of time before a movie like this would come to pass. From director Todd Sheets (BONEHILL ROAD, HI-DEATH, GRINDSPLOITATION) comes CLOWNADO, a film about evil clowns that have the power to create tornadoes? Huh... I will say this, you gotta give Todd Sheets some extra points for creativity.

Synopsis: A troupe of murderous circus clowns are trapped in a tornado by a witches' spell and travel the midwest destroying everything and everyone in their path while seeking revenge on the woman who imprisoned them. Along the way a stripper, Elvis impersonator, truck driver, teen runaway, and a dude get caught up in the supernatural showdown between a femme fatale and the boss clown from hell.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!
Greetings Vault Dwellers! This second week of September 2019 has a pretty small lineup of new titles on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD disc. But as is typically the case, there's plenty of good stuff that you'll most definitely want to add to your growing collections!
For those of you who have begun adding 4K discs to your shelves, you have a good mix to choose from today, including CASINO, LOCK UP, DAYBREAKERS, Edgar Wright's "Cornetto Trilogy" (i.e. SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ, THE WORLD'S END), and the JURASSIC WORLD: 5-MOVIE COLLECTION!

This Halloween, Prepare to Stare at Your Television Screen With TWO EVIL EYES!

Cover Art for Blue Underground's Limited Edition Blu-ray of TWO EVIL EYES.

TWO EVIL EYES is a film that I must revisit in the near future, because I was not a huge fan of it during my initial viewing so many years ago. On paper, it's a movie that I should love with every ounce of my being - Based (loosely) upon the works of Edgar Allen Poe, TWO EVIL EYES was directed by George A. Romero and Dario Argento, scored by Pino Donaggio, features effects by Tom Savini, and stars Adrienne Barbeau (one of my pre-teen celebrity crushes)! And yet I never had the urge to watch it again... until now!

At the end of October, Blue Underground is unleashing their 3-Disc Limited Edition, which promises a 4K restoration of the film, tons of new special features, and a CD of the film's soundtrack! Want to learn more? Then keep on reading Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: The masters of modern horror – George Romero and Dario Argento – bring you an unprecedented pair of shockers inspired by the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.

Then in Argento's The Black Cat, a deranged crime scene photographer (Harvey Keitel - RESERVOIR DOGS) is driven to brutal acts of madness and murder by his girlfriend's new pet. But will this cunning feline deliver a final sickening twist of its own?

Follow Matt Dillon's evolution as a serial murderer in the (fully uncut) THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, and discover that yes, Eric Roberts will star in anything when you watch IMMORTAL WARS: RESURGENCE! Also enjoy a fun double feature of LAST ACTION HERO with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and HUDSON HAWK featuring Bruce Willis back when he could still crack a smile. Watch a modern retelling of a Greek epic in ULYSSES: A DARK ODYSSEY, see what's lurking UNDER THE SILVER LAKE, and travel across the Outback with WILLS AND BURKE, which features a young Nicole Kidman!

* On October 2nd, Umbrella Entertainment is releasing two fun-looking Horror titles to DVD! Rolfe Kanefsky (THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE) directs ART OF THE DEAD, which features seven evil paintings representing the seven deadly sins! Will a half-blind priest save an art-collecting couple from a demonic fate? Also coming to DVD is the FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL, an anthology flick from the creators of THE ABC'S OF DEATH featuring 8 international folktales of terror!

* Also due out on October 2nd is the new sci-fi thriller THE WHEEL, in which a paraplegic prison inmate volunteers for an experimental procedure that may allow him to walk again. However, this bargain does come with a few strings attached. Stars Jackson Gallagher, David Arquette, and Kendal Rae!

Umbrella Entertainment's THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT Blu-ray Cover.
Synopsis: USA in the 1970s. We follow the highly intelligent Jack (Matt Dillon - CRASH) over a span of 12 years and are introduced to the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack's point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork.

Along the way we experience Jack's descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge (Bruno Ganz - DOWNFALL) - a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and psychopathic explanations. THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT is a dark and sinister story, yet presented through a philosophical and occasional humorous tale. (Note: This is the complete Director's Cut of the film!)

One of Slater's enemies, Benedict the hitman (Charles Dance - THE GOLDEN CHILD, PATRICK), gets hold of the ticket and ends up in Danny's world, where he realizes that if he can kill him, Slater will be no more. Slater and Danny must travel back and stop him.

In HUDSON HAWK, Bruce Willis (the DIE HARD series) is Eddie "The Hawk" Hawkins, the world's most famous cat burglar. After 10 years in prison, he's ready to go straight. But it's not going to be easy for The Hawk...The mob and the CIA have conspired to blackmail Eddie and his partner, Tommy Five-Tone (Danny Aiello - LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL), into stealing three DaVinci masterpieces from the most heavily-guarded museums in the world. Sounds simple, right? WRONG!

While trying to steal the goods Hawk falls in love with a beautiful nun (Andi McDowell - FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, MULTIPLICITY) and is relentlessly pursued by the greedy and powerful Minerva and Darwin Mayflower, who want the artworks as part of their twisted plot to ruin the world's economy. Director Seth Breedlove Explores the Folklore Behind MOMO: THE MISSOURI MONSTER in New Film!

MOMO: The Missouri Monster one sheet.

Growing up, I was a big monster movie fan (still am!) which of course led me down the path of believing in, and studying, cryptids like The Loch-Ness Monster, Bigfoot, Mothman, etc. While I don't put much stock in those legends any longer (but still secretly hold out a hope that we'll find living dinosaurs hiding somewhere in the world!) it's still fun to learn more about the folktales about hairy humanoids lurking in the wilds!

Synopsis: The year was 1972 and the place was a tiny, quaint, riverfront town called Louisiana, Missouri. On a warm summer evening, two local kids saw a creature in their own backyard holding a dead dog. Before you could say the word "Bigfoot," local media and police officials had pounced on the story. Overnight Louisiana became "monster central" with creature seekers and monster hunters combing the woods to look for "the thing" that the newspapers had dubbed "MOMO."

One particular family was at the center of this whirlwind of activity and as the Missouri Monster sightings began to increase, so did the negative impact on the Harrisons. In 1975, a film crew set out to tell an over-the-top, filmic version of the MOMO sightings. Due to one reason or another, this should-have-been-cult-classic was never released. Until now.

Momo: The Missouri Monster retro one sheet.
Additional Info: Small Town Monsters, the production company behind last year's best-selling documentary ON THE TRAIL OF BIGFOOT, proudly presents MOMO: THE MISSOURI MONSTER, which seeks to tell the true, and truly strange story of the Missouri Monster. The hair-covered, three-toed monstrosity was said to have prowled the forests of Star Hill, near Louisiana, Missouri during the summer of 1972 where it was spotted by terrified citizens for weeks!

The case gained national media attention during the '70s and remains one of the largest tourist draws for the tiny town on the banks of the Mississippi River. The latest release from Small Town Monsters and director Seth Breedlove, MOMO: THE MISSOURI MONSTER is told in both narrative and documentary form.

The narrative sections appear as a lost b-movie from the 1970s, inspired by Breedlove's lifelong fascination with grindhouse movies and creature features. The horror film depicts the widely accepted details of the MOMO legend and is eventually contradicted and corrected by the actual survivors who lived through the events. Breedlove describes MOMO: The Missouri Monster as "RASHOMON meets THE CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE or THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK."

The film stars Adam Duggan and Sara Heddleston, as well as Animal Planet's Cliff Barackman and James "Bobo" Fay with special appearances by Janet Jay and Elizabeth Saint (Ghosts of Shepardstown).

Scream Factory Brings a Trio of British Horror Classics to Blu-ray on September 10th!

Scream Factory's BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB Bluray Cover

2019 has been a damned good year for Scream Factory, who has continued to build one of the largest physical media catalogs I've ever seen. (It reminds me of MGM back in their Midnite Movies days!) And now they've added three more classic films to their vaults, with the release of Hammer's BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB and SCARS OF DRACULA, and the final entry in the "Sadian Trilogy," namely CIRCUS OF HORRORS! Both Hammer titles fare the best and come complete with new audio commentaries and two different aspect ratios! Let's take a closer look before pre-ordering these Vault Dwellers, shall we?

But when one of the archaeologists steals a mysterious ring from the corpse's severed hand, he unleashes a relentless curse upon his beautiful daughter.
