All Hail Lord Buckethead! HYPERSPACE is Coming to Blu-ray at the End of May!

TODD DURHAM'S OBSCURE SCI-FI COMEDY COMES TO BLU-RAY DISC ON MAY 26TH IN GLORIOUS 3D!

Almost a decade ago, I read online that a political candidate named Lord Buckethead was running for office in British Parliament. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. Even more so when I discovered that a.) he had run in previous elections, gaining more votes each time, and b.) was a character from an obscure STAR WARS parody called HYPERSPACE (aka GREMLOIDS, aka GREMLORDS)!

Utilizing Cinemageddon (an invite-only torrent site that is a legit treasure trove of cinematic oddities) I managed to snag a VHS-rip of the film and I kind of fell in love with it. But after my initial viewing of HYPERSPACE, I never got around to watching it again. In fact, I had admittedly forgotten about its existence until I saw it suddenly pop up on a list of Kino Lorber's upcoming Blu-ray titles! I legit did a double-take, and got super excited! Finally, the masses would get a chance to discover this forgotten gem and, as an added bonus, experience it in legit 3-D!

I'll admit that this title is a day one purchase for yours truly, but you may not be totally convinced. So let's take a closer look at Kino's upcoming disc to help you make up your mind!

Synopsis: HYPERSPACE is an irreverent, low budget '80s sci-fi comedy written and directed fresh out of film school by Todd Durham, the creator of the blockbuster HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA franchise. In his first starring role, Chris Elliott (GROUNDHOG DAY, CABIN BOY) plays Dr. William Hopper, a cocky UFO scientist on the trail of an evil Intergalactic Space Lord, who has unknowingly landed on the wrong planet, namely Earth in the rural South, where he bewilders the locals in his frustrated, hell-bent search for stolen radio transmissions and a space princess he had been pursuing. Will he and his alien minions meet their match when confronted by Hopper, some wily country folks, and the trigger-happy U.S. National Guard? Co-starring Paula Poundstone (INSIDE OUT).

Included, also in ultra-widescreen, is Durham's horror holiday short The Fright Before Christmas. After Mom & Dad drop off the kids at their sweet Grandma's house the week before Christmas, the children begin to get the feeling that somehow this holiday vacation may be a little different from previous yuletide visits.

HYPERSPACE and THE FRIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS are presented in both stereoscopic and anaglyphic 3D formats, as well as standard 2D!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 90 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.39:1)
Audio - TBA

Extras:

  • NEW! 4K RESTORATIONS BY 3-D Film Archive!
  • The Fright Before Christmas (1983, 33min)
  • The Making of Hyperspace (75 min)
  • Isolated Music Track with Commentary by Composer Don Davis & Editor Bruce Stubblefield!
  • Vintage Pre-Show
  • Hyperspace Trailer
  • The Fright Before Christmas Trailer

So not only do we get multiple ways to watch the film, but it's the director's cut (which seems to run four minutes longer), and it comes with some cool bonus features?! Hell yeah! Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release of HYPERSPACE (and THE FRIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS) will be available from retailers on Tuesday, May 26th, and should cost somewhere in the realm of $20 - $25. On January 30th, Journey to THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS!

DEAF CROCODILE'S NEW RESTORATION OF THE CZECH ODDITY ARRIVES ON BLU-RAY WITH SOME GREAT BONUS FEATURES!

Vinegar Syndrome's partner label Deaf Crocodile has been doing a stellar job of restoring obscure cinema from around the world (e.g. SOLOMON KING, SAMPO, et al.), and one of their latest titles is a little Czech number called THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS. Loosely based upon a Jules Verne novel, this difficult-to-categorize film has been given a great release from the fledgling boutique label. Along with the much-touted restoration, there's also a pretty good number of bonus features included on this release! Let's pull out our collective magnifying glasses and take a closer look at this one Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: A unique and almost indescribable mix of Gothic fiction, steampunk gadgetry (designed by Czech animation wizard Jan Švankmajer), slapstick comedy and romantic opera, director Oldřich Lipský's wonderfully bonkers delight has elements of THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS, Terry Gilliam, Mel Brooks and "The Benny Hill Show." Based on an 1892 Jules Verne novel The Carpathian Castle (which partially inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula), the film follows Count Teleke of Tölökö (Michal Dočolomanský) on the trail of the count's lost lover, opera singer Salsa Verde (Evelyna Steimarová) – only to discover she's been abducted by fiendish Baron Gorc of Gorceny (Miloš Kopecký), whose castle home is filled with the bizarre inventions of mad scientist Orfanik (Rudolf Hrušínský).

Littered with puns, sight gags and non-sequiturs – "Later, in Werewolfston", an invented dialect, a detached golden ear for eavesdropping, a staff topped by an enormous TV eyeball – MYSTERIOUS CASTLE was the third fantastical film from the team of director Lipský and writer Jiří Brdečka after their much-loved musical western spoof LEMONADE JOE (1966) and their detective/horror satire ADELA HAS NOT HAD SUPPER YET (1977), both major Czech cult hits. (Note that actor Miloš Kopecký and Jiří Brdečka worked on the supernatural anthology PRAGUE NIGHTS, also released by the Národní filmový archív, Deaf Crocodile, and Comeback Company.)

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 98 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p (1.37:1)
Audio - Czech LPCM 2.0 (w/ English subtitles)

Extras:

  • NEW! Restoration of the film by Craig Rogers for Deaf Crocodile!
  • NEW! Video interview with Czech film critic and screenwriter Tereza Brdečková on her father, Jiří Brdečka, writer of MYSTERIOUS CASTLE. (In English)
  • NEW! Essay by film historian and expert on Eastern European cinema Jonathan Owen
  • NEW! Audio commentary by Tereza Brdečková and Czech film expert Irena Kovarova of Comeback Company.
  • Two eerie and stunningly beautiful Jiří Brdečka animated short films:
    • Vzducholoď a láska (Love and the Dirigible) (1948, 9 min.)
    • Třináctá komnata prince Měděnce (Prince Copperslick aka Prince Měděnec's Thirteenth Chamber) (1980, 9 min.)
  • UNIVERSUM BRDEČKA (2017, 84 min., dir. Miroslav Janek) - A feature length documentary on the life and career of filmmaker, animator, screenwriter and illustrator Jiří Brdečka, covering his childhood, his work as a screenwriter with Jiří Trnka, Karel Zeman and Oldřich Lipský, and his own acclaimed work as an animator and director. In Czech with English subtitles.

Reviews seem overly positive about the film itself (Blu-ray.com's review called it a "laugh riot"), and the restoration work done by Deaf Crocodile is reportedly top-notch, so this is looking like another win for them! For titles like this, I typically adopt a "try before you buy approach" these days (especially with the skyrocketing price boutique Blu-ray releases) but if you've been keeping pace with Deaf Crocodile up to this point, and enjoy eccentric international cinema, this will definitely be a must-own for you! THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow (January 30th!) and should cost between $21 - $30! Order a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, VINEGAR SYNDROME, or directly from DEAF CROCODILE!

Last Summer They Were Pets. Now They are Predators. THE PACK Comes to Blu-ray Disc on September 12th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of THE PACK (1977)!SCREAM FACTORY BRINGS ROBERT CLOUSE'S 1977 CANINE FRIGHT FLICK TO BLU-RAY WITH A NEW 2K TRANSFER AND EXTRAS!

As big a fan as I am of the natural horror sub-genre, I somehow failed to watch THE PACK! Growing up, I distinctly remember seeing this particular title in the Horror section of every video store I forced my parents to take me to, but I just never took the plunge. Instead I opted for other Horror titles and monster movies, most of which I had already viewed numerous times.

But with Scream Factory's new Blu-ray of Robert Clouse's tale of mongrel mayhem on the horizon, I do believe the time has  finally arrived for yours truly to take in this underappreciated slice of canine carnage. So let's take a closer look at this release Vault Dwellers, to ultimately decide whether or not this is a worthwhile purchase or if we're all just barking up the wrong tree. (My apologies for the pun gang. Admittedly it was a bit.... ruff.)

Synopsis: Writer/director Robert Clouse, whose ENTER THE DRAGON delivered hard-hitting action and whose DEADLY EYES provided gnawing rodent terror, combines both fright and fight in this survival tale where a walk in the woods becomes a long, dark journey into fear. Set on a remote island, where vacationers have senselessly abandoned their unwanted pet dogs, THE PACK shows man's inhumanity coming back to haunt him with fanged fury.

The confused, starving pets form a rampaging pack, and man's best friend becomes his worst fiend. Joe Don Baker (WALKING TALL, GOLDENEYE, THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, FINAL JUSTICE) stars as the heroic marine biologist who comes up with a do-or-die scheme that will either reestablish man as top dog or turn him into a tasty tidbit. The suspense is ferocious!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 95 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD MA 2.0

Extras:

  • NEW! 2K RESTORATION FROM THE BEST SURVIVING ELEMENT - A COLOR REVERSAL INTERMEDIATE!
  • NEW! Audio Commentary With Film Historian/Author Lee Gambin!
  • NEW! Snarling And Sweet – Actress Hope Alexander Remembers The Pack!
  • NEW! Activism And Acting – An Audio Interview With Actress Sherry Deboeur!
  • NEW! The Extra Mile – An Audio Interview With First Assistant Director Thomas Lofaro!
  • NEW! Notes On Paper – An Audio Interview With Composer Lee Holdridge!
  • The Pack Preview Clip
  • Trailer
  • Still Gallery

Ok, that settles it gang, I'm adding this one to my collection! The Lee Gambin commentary alone is likely worth the price of admission, plus I'm fairly surprised to see such a treasure trove of interviews as well (even if the majority are audio only). This is a quite a bit more love and attention than I expected, and gives me hope that Scream Factory is still going to provide quality releases for titles like this, rather than cranking out new editions (steelbooks & 4Ks) of movies they've already released! THE PACK arrives on Blu-ray Tuesday, September 12th and should cost between $25 - $27! Snag yourself a copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT STUDIOS!

MY DEMON LOVER Will Bring Out the Beast in You on September 5th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray of MY DEMON LOVER!

FANS OF CHARLIE LOVENTHAL'S SUPERNATURAL ROMANTIC COMEDY REJOICE - MY DEMON LOVER IS FINALLY COMING TO BLU-RAY!

Back in 2018, I showcased MY DEMON LOVER in the News Vault's WANTED ON BLU-RAY column where I pined for a high-def release of this oft-forgotten gem. So imagine my surprise earlier this year when Scream Factory announced that they were giving the film a new lease on life! With MY DEMON LOVER's Blu-ray debut just around the corner, let's take a closer look at this new disc and see if Scream Factory managed to fulfill some of the items on my wishlist!

Synopsis: True love has many faces — and sometimes claws and a tail — in the frightfully funny romance MY DEMON LOVER! The happy-go-lucky but lonely Kaz (Scott Valentine, Family Ties) is looking for love when he meets Denny (Michele Little, APOLLO 13), a kindhearted young woman with an uncanny ability to attract stray pets and down-and-out boyfriends. Denny is sure she's met the man of her dreams when she sweeps Kaz off the streets and into her heart. But it's anything but a match made in heaven when she discovers that Kaz is afflicted by a curse that turns him into a horny monster — literally — whenever he's turned on! Will Denny be able to bring out the best, and not the beast, in her newfound paranormal paramour?!

Disc Specs:

  • NEW! Rune Tunes: Scoring My Demon Lover – Interview With Composer David Newman!
  • Theatrical Trailer

While there isn't a feature-length director's commentary or the music video for Intimate Strangers' "Let's Go," Scream Factory's release for MY DEMON LOVER is still a solid one that knocks a lot of items from my WANTED ON BLU-RAY wishlist! This disc will be available on Tuesday, September 5th wherever Blu-rays are sold and should cost between $23 - $27! You can order your copy now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY's online shop!

You Better Watch Out for Vestron Video Collector's Series' New SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION!

Cover art for the Vestron Video Collector's Series' SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION!
THE REMAINDER OF THE "SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT" FRANCHISE COMES TO BLU-RAY DISC ON DECEMBER 13TH WITH A SURPRISING NUMBER OF BONUS FEATURES!

I absolutely adore the mean-spirited insanity of the original SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, I appreciate the awful (but glorious) cheesiness of PART 2 ("Garbage Day!"), and the 2012 reboot of the original was... okay, but I honestly don't remember much about the rest of the films that make up the series. (Hell, I don't even recall if I've actually seen Parts 3 and 4!) Thankfully on December 13th, I can reacquaint myself with the absolutely insane trio of holiday horror films that involve psychos, witches, and murderous toys! And because this is part of Lionsgate's ongoing Vestron Video Collector's Series line, these movies have truly gotten way more love than they deserve!

Synopses: Prepare for a trilogy of pure terror with this collection of films from the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT series. In BETTER WATCH OUT!, it's a very bloody Christmas after Ricky Caldwell, the notorious "Killer Santa Claus," awakens from a six-year coma with one thing on his mind: murder. In INITIATION, a reporter's investigation into a mysterious death leads her into the clutches of a cult that's chosen her as its new queen, and THE TOY MAKER stars entertainment legend Mickey Rooney as a toy maker whose creations display some very human – and deadly – tendencies.

Egads! I can't believe they put this much effort into this trio of sequels Vault Dwellers: We get new audio commentaries, new cast & crew interviews, still galleries, trailers, and (according to Blu-ray.com's review) greatly improved picture and audio over the previous DVD release! (Note: To those of you preparing to complain about the aspect ratios, the films were originally shot in fullscreen.) I was already looking forward to slapping another Vestron title in line with the others, but now I'm legitimately excited to get this set in the mail next week!

Speaking of which, the SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION will be available everywhere discs are sold on Tuesday, December 13th (which is turning into an expensive day, no?) and should cost between $17 - $18! If You've Got a Taste for Terror... Get CARRIE on 4K UHD on December 13th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's 3-Disc Collector's Edition 4K UHD of CARRIE!
SCREAM FACTORY BRINGS BRIAN DE PALMA'S FANTASTIC ADAPTION OF THE STEPHEN KING NOVEL TO 4K, IN BOTH STANDARD AND STEELBOOK EDITIONS!

Though there's been a sequel, a made-for-TV remake, and a big budget Hollywood reboot, the original 1976 CARRIE is still clearly the best version of the Stephen King tale of a tortured teenage girl that unleashes her telekinetic powers upon those that wronged her. And now CARRIE is the latest Scream Factory double-dip, featuring a new 4k transfer, one new audio commentary, a newspaper ad gallery, plus the plethora of extras from the previous Blu-ray release! If you haven't yet added this movie to your collection, now is the time to do it Vault Dwellers! And if you already do have CARRIE, this seems like a worthy upgrade!

Synopsis: Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel, this "absolutely spellbinding horror movie" (Roger Ebert) stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in Oscar-nominated* performances. This ultimate revenge fantasy has become one of the all-time great horror classics!

At the center of the terror is Carrie (Spacek), a high school loner with no confidence, no friends ... and no idea about the extent of her secret powers of telekinesis. But when her psychotic mother and sadistic classmates finally go too far, the once-shy teen becomes an unrestrained, vengeance-seeking powerhouse who, with the help of her "special gift," causes all hell to break loose in a famed cinematic frenzy of blood, fire and brimstone! This classic also stars John Travolta (BLOW OUT), Amy Irving (THE FURY), William Katt (HOUSE), and P.J. Soles (HALLOWEEN).

While I haven't been a big fan of Scream Factory's somewhat recent decision to focus on re-releasing titles in new 4K editions, I must admit that the fact that they are using the original theatrical artwork, and adding a few additional bonus features, kind of sweetens the pot. The 3-disc standard Collector's Edition 4K UHD of CARRIE arrives on Tuesday, December 13th and should cost between $28 - $36! You can pre-order it now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

There is also a Limited Edition Steelbook arriving the same day, which will cost somewhere between $30 - $39! That release is also available to order now from AMAZON, DIABOLIK DVD, and SHOUT! FACTORY. (Note: Ordering either the standard or steelbook editions directly from Scream/Shout! will net you a poster!) However, if you're a hardcore CARRIE fan, then you may want to indulge in one of Shout!/Scream Factory's exclusive bundles:

Go Bigfoot Hunting for the CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE - Coming to Blu-ray Disc on December 13th!

Blu-ray artwork for Synapse Films' release of CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE!SYNAPSE FILMS GIVES THIS 1976 SASQUATCH CLASSIC SOME MAJOR LOVE WITH A NEW 4K RESTORATION AND BONUS FEATURES!

Made in the wake of Charles B. Pierce's THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK (and several other films trying to capitalize on its success), Joy Houck Jr.'s entry into the Bigfoot movie sub-genre was one of the better made docudramas of that era. Once a staple of late night television, CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE would eventually make its way to VHS, but wouldn't see the light of day again until an official DVD release back in 2005. And now, thanks to the efforts of the folks at Synapse Films, this forgotten tale of two intrepid researchers scouring the swamps of Louisiana for proof of a legendary "missing link" is back and better than ever, boasting a 4K restoration and fantastic new extras! Let's take a closer look at this upcoming release, shall we?

Synopsis: There's a hairy humanoid beast lurking in the Louisiana swamps, but only trapper Joe Canton (Jack Elam, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST) has seen it and lived to tell the tale, and the other residents of Oil City, Louisiana don't talk about it. But that's not about to stop intrepid grad students Pahoo (Dennis Fimple, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES) and Rives (John David Carson, EMPIRE OF THE ANTS), who are determined to track down the Bigfoot-like creature. Defying local sheriff Billy Carter (Bill Thurman, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW), the duo trek deep into the wilds of Black Lake, and a series of frightening encounters make it clear the monster is no mere legend.

Following in the (big) footsteps of THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK and similar docudramas, 1976's CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE is a fictional Sasquatch saga, albeit one inspired by real reports. With a colorful cast, also including Dub Taylor (THE WILD BUNCH), and plenty of rural atmosphere courtesy of cinematographer Dean Cundey (HALLOWEEN, THE THING, JURASSIC PARK), scripter Jim McCullough Jr.—who also co-stars—and director Joy Houck Jr. bring touches of humor and humanity that complement the mystery of the monster, and the terror of its attacks.

Screen still from CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE.
"Mr. Creature.... you are trying to seduce me!"

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 95 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English Dolby TrueHD 2.0 Mono

Extras:

  • NEW! 4K RESTORATION OF THE FILM FROM THE ORIGINAL 35MM CAMERA NEGATIVE!
  • NEW! Audio commentary with author/filmmaker Michael Gingold and film historian Chris Poggiali!
  • NEW! SWAMP STORIES – Featurette with Director of Photography Dean Cundey!
  • Original theatrical trailer and radio spot!

Though I wouldn't be surprised if a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release pops up later on down the road, for the time being, this release is guaranteed to be the very best that CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE has ever looked or sounded! Coupled with the Dean Cundey featurette, plus the audio commentary by Gingold and Poggiali, this is the most love the film has been shown since it was shot, edited, and released theatrically over four decades ago!

If you're a Bigfoot film enthusiast, then make sure to pre-order your copy right now (for approximately $20) from AMAZON or BULLMOOSE! However, if you're the type of movie collector that prefers a slipcover with their disc, then hurry and grab a limited edition copy of CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE right this minute (for approx. $30) from DIABOLIK DVD or directly from SYNAPSE FILMS!

The Object is to Stay Alive - DEATH GAME Makes its Blu-ray Debut on November 15th!

Blu-ray artwork for Grindhouse Releasing's DEATH GAME!

GRINDHOUSE RELEASING GIVES PETER TRAYNOR'S "DEATH GAME" A SPECTACULAR 2-DISC BLU-RAY RELEASE!

My sole experience of watching DEATH GAME was back in November 2021 at Exhumed Films' 24-Hour Horrorthon, where they took a break from running 35mm prints to showcase Grindhouse Releasing's gorgeous 4K restoration of the film! While I didn't become an instantaneous fan of the movie, I kind of fell in love with Colleen Camp and Sandra Locke as the two totally unhinged femme fatales that throw themselves at an unwitting victim, then turn on him after their carnal needs are satiated.

Having purchased several of Grindhouse Releasing's previous titles (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and PIECES), I have to admit that even though this particular film isn't a favorite of mine, I'm actually considering picking up a copy for the transfer and extras alone! While I try to figure out if I want to add this 2-disc set to my collection, let's take a closer look to help you decide if DEATH GAME is right for you, shall we?!

Synopsis: Grindhouse Releasing is proud to present the ultimate 1970s psychological thriller! John Cassavetes veteran Seymour Cassel stars as George Manning, a family man whose perfect life is turned into a nightmare of sex and torture when he allows himself to be seduced by two nubile young strangers (Sondra Locke and Colleen Camp) who show up at his door on a rainy night. Considered lost for many decades, DEATH GAME is being presented for for the first time on home video in its original aspect ratio, meticulously restored in 4K from the original camera negative!

Alternate cover art for Grindhouse Releasing's DEATH GAME!

Disc Specs:

Rated R | Color | 87 minutes | Region Free

  • NEW! Provocative, in-depth interviews with cult movie legend Colleen Camp (GAME OF DEATH, APOCALYPSE NOW) and director Peter Traynor, conducted by Eli Roth

  • NEW! Audio commentaries by Colleen Camp & Eli Roth, and Larry Spiegel & David Worth!

  • Includes a second feature film: LITTLE MISS INNOCENCE, the predecessor of DEATH GAME!

Bob Clark had a pretty eclectic career and made films ranging from raunchy teen sex comedies (PORKY'S and PORKY'S II: THE NEXT DAY), to Horror classics (DEATHDREAM and BLACK CHRISTMAS), to Christmas essentials (A CHRISTMAS STORY), to kids movies (BABY GENIUSES), and even gender-bending crime movies (SHE-MAN: A STORY OF FIXATION).

But today we're going to focus on his first true feature-length film, 1972's CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS, which is getting a new 50th anniversary Blu-ray and 4K UHD release from VCI in November! While not in my "zombie top ten," I do enjoy this low-budget horror romp and count myself lucky to have seen it in 35mm!

Synopsis: Five young kinky actors and their artistic director come to a desolate and nearly forgotten burial island, complete with a morbid history of MURDER, RAPE, CURSES and DEMONS. Alan (Alan Ormsby), the brilliant but bizarre Director of the company, has brought them to this foreboding place to dabble in witchcraft; specifically to dig up a fresh corpse and use it in a ritual ceremony which is supposed to raise the dead from their graves.

It seems as though Alan has really gathered his "children" here, only to play a practical joke on them and then to party the rest of the night away. However, the joke's on Alan. His bizarre ritual ceremony really does raise the dead from their graves... only they're in no mood to party!

Originally slated for release on October 11th, VCI repeatedly pushed back their 50th Anniversary release of CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS until December 6th (ditto for their Region A Blu-ray disc). The upcoming 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of CHILDREN should cost between $27 - $30 (though the price may drop before release), and can be pre-ordered now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD

Cover art for Kino Lorber Studio Classics' Special Edition Blu-ray of GOLDEN NEEDLES!
KINO LORBER STUDIO CLASSICS GIVES ROBERT CLOUSE'S OBSCURE MARTIAL ARTS ADVENTURE ITS BLU-RAY DEBUT!

Up until recently, I never even knew of the existence of GOLDEN NEEDLES, but having just watched the trailer, I can safely say that I need to grab a copy of this! Directed by Robert Clouse, the man who gave us such martial arts classics as ENTER THE DRAGON, BLACK BELT JONES, and GYMKATA, GOLDEN NEEDLES follows the exploits of various factions vying for the titular seven "Golden Needles."

If used correctly, these acupuncture tools will grant someone superhuman sexual prowess (and possibly eternal life). But if used incorrectly, the needles will cause instant, agonizing death! This movie looks like a total blast and has a fantastic cast - I think we all owe Kino Lorber a big thanks for scooping up this title and giving it a brand new 2K restoration! Never heard of this one yourself? Well Vault Dwellers, pull up a chair and let's you and I take a closer look at this new Kino release!

Synopsis: From Robert Clouse, the sensational director of ENTER THE DRAGON, DARKER THAN AMBER, GAME OF DEATH, FORCE: FIVE, GYMKATA, and THE AMSTERDAM KILL, comes this suspense story of a priceless ancient Chinese statue that is pursued halfway across the world. The legend of the golden statue (which contains seven youth-restoring acupuncture needles) promises the owner health and incredible vigor... but can also deliver a painful death!

Joe Don Baker (THE PACK, WALKING TALL, FRAMED), Elizabeth Ashley (THE GREAT SCOUT AND CATHOUSE THURSDAY), Ann Sothern (THE WHALES OF AUGUST), Burgess Meredith (BURNT OFFERINGS), Roy Chiao (BLOODSPORT), Frances Fong (HELLFIGHTERS), and martial arts legend Jim Kelly (BLACK BELT JONES, THREE THE HARD WAY) are seven desperate people on one desperate chase to find the Golden Needles. Legendary composer Lalo Schifrin (BULLITT, DIRTY HARRY) provides the groovy score!

He Wants Your Body... In Pieces! DEATH SCREAMS Makes Its Blu-ray Debut on September 28th!

Cover art for Arrow Video's Limited Edition Blu-ray of DEATH SCREAMS!
ARROW VIDEO GIVES DAVID NELSON'S LONG FORGOTTEN SLASHER FLICK A NEW LEASE ON LIFE WITH THEIR NEW LIMITED EDITION RELEASE!

I'm an absolute sucker for slasher flicks! From the major franchises, to the multitude of international standalone films featuring psychotic killers, I've seen just about everything the sub-genre has to offer. But every now and again, some rare or obscure slasher movie claws its way up from the depths to be rescued by a boutique Blu-ray label. Which brings me of course to DEATH SCREAMS! The folks at Arrow Video got their hands on the only existing 35mm print of this film and have given it a new 2K restoration, along with a variety of new bonus features (which include two audio commentaries and a making-of documentary)! I have to admit that I'm totally in the dark on this one Vault Dwellers, but that didn't stop me from blindly pre-ordering a copy once I learned of its existence! If you're on the fence about picking up a copy of DEATH SCREAMS, continue onward to learn more about this (mostly) forgotten slice of slasher film history!

Even more limited edition O-Card artwork for Arrow Video's DEATH SCREAMS Blu-ray!

Synopsis:
In one of the most unlikely cinematic pairings of all time, David Nelson (who rose to fame as a child star playing alongside his real-life family in the wholesome TV show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet) directs Playboy Playmate and adult star Susan Kiger in this bodycount-heavy, long overlooked slice of Southern fried hack-and-slash – 1982's DEATH SCREAMS!

Late one night, a young couple are brutally murdered at a make-out spot by an unseen assailant, their bodies tossed into the nearby river. As the lifeless lovers drift slowly downstream, the residents of the town excitedly prepare themselves for their annual carnival, unaware that a machete-wielding maniac with a twisted grudge is lurking in their midst. When a group of teen revelers plan a late-night after party down in the local cemetery, they unwittingly set the stage for a bloodbath.

DEATH SCREAMS, which was released on US VHS as HOUSE OF DEATH (and on UK DVD with the reels in the wrong order!) oozes early '80s regional slasher charm from its every pore, boasting an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink final reel featuring slashed throats, bisected bodies, and exploding heads. At long last arriving on Blu-ray and lovingly restored from the only-known existing 35mm print, this little-seen slasher classic is ready to carve its way into the bleeding hearts of horror fans everywhere!

Cover art for Arrow Video's COLD WAR CREATURES: FOUR FILMS FROM SAM KATZMAN Blu-ray set!

ARROW VIDEO RELEASES A QUARTET OF ATOM AGE MONSTER MOVIES IN A GORGEOUS NEW BLU-RAY SET!

I am somewhat familiar with Sam Katzman, mostly thanks to growing up with TNT's MonsterVision and Mystery Science Theater 3000! While he only directed five films during his lengthy career, Katzman produced hundreds of films over four decades, including the ones contained in Arrow Video's new COLD WAR CREATURES set! Meanwhile, an enormous bird from outer-space descends to chow down on the people of planet Earth in THE GIANT CLAW!

They're Out For Blood - Don't Let Them Find You! ALONE IN THE DARK Arrives on Blu-ray Disc on September 14th!

New cover art for Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Alone in the Dark (1982)!
SCREAM FACTORY GIVES JACK SHOLDER'S LONG OUT OF PRINT HORROR CLASSIC ITS BIG BLU-RAY DEBUT!

UPDATE: Due to supply chain issues, there is a delay with this release. The discs have been manufactured but have not yet arrived at Scream/Shout! Factory HQ, or other retailers. Orders of this title will be filled once the Blu-rays arrive!

I've been a longtime fan of ALONE IN THE DARK - it has a fantastic cast, and a great premise! Martin Landau and Jack Palance often steal the show, and Donald Pleasance's role is an unexpectedly fun departure from his previous work in the HALLOWEEN series. Though ALONE IN THE DARK has languished in limbo for well over a decade, I am pleased to announce that for those of us that were lucky to acquire a copy of the 2005 Special Edition DVD, the time has finally come to upgrade!

As prophesied two years ago by yours truly in a certain Wanted on Blu-ray post, ALONE IN THE DARK is about to be released by Scream Factory with new (reversible) artwork, a new 2K transfer, and a variety of new and archival bonus features! I don't know about you Vault Dwellers, but I am absolutely stoked to receive my copy in the mail next week!

Synopsis: At a secluded mental institution, electricity fuels the hi-tech security system that keeps the nearby neighborhoods safe from deviant menaces like Frank Hawkes (Jack Palance - BATMAN, WITHOUT WARNING) and "Preacher" (Martin Landau - ED WOOD, THE BEING). Dr. Bain (HALLOWEEN's Donald Pleasence) maintains strict order while a new doctor, Dan Potter (The A-Team's Dwight Schultz), arrives in town with his family. But the inmates don't take kindly to Potter's presence and believe he has killed off their former therapist. Suddenly, a power outage leaves the town in chaos ... and now the maniacs are free to roam the streets and hunt down the man they believe has invaded their lives.

With the area quickly descending into riots and chaos, the innocent few must fight for their lives when they're left terrified, cornered and ALONE IN THE DARK! One of the most memorable and terrifying cult horror films of the 1980s, this white-knuckle shocker from director Jack Sholder (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE, THE HIDDEN) features gory make-up effects from Tom Brumberger (DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE) and Tom Savini (FRIDAY THE 13TH), delivering one seat-jumping scare after another, along with a thick slab of pitch-black humor!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 93 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
