Vault Master's Collector's Corner: I Finally Completed My Vestron Video Collector's Series Blu-ray Collection!

Hey gang! It's been a busy year for yours truly, and I apologize that I sort of vanished back in February. I've been picking up a ton of overtime at work, and am otherwise occupied with trying to raise a now (almost) three-year old son, which doesn't leave much time for writing about movies, let alone watching them! While I'm hoping that this post is the start of my latest comeback, don't be too surprised if new content remains sporadic for the next, oh I don't know.... fifteen years or so?

As an avid collector of physical media I currently have two issues plaguing me: I don't have a lot of shelf space in my current residence (which I've found a temporary solution for) and I don't have the same amount of expendable income that I once did (let's face it, kids are expensive and rent isn't cheap these days). This has forced me to cut back and be a little more conservative with my purchases. And while I have long given up on on my fool's errand of trying to own the entire catalogs of boutique Blu-ray labels like Arrow Video, Scream/Shout! Factory, and Vinegar Syndrome, I recently decided to go for a far more obtainable goal as a Blu-ray hoarder: To complete my collection of Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series' releases!

To date there have been twenty-nine titles released under this label (with number thirty making its way here as of my posting this!), and up until recently I was missing half of them. While many of the later Vestron discs are very reasonably priced (everything released after MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE has been around $12), the first seventeen Blu-rays still remain in the $25 - $30 range. For that reason, I've continued to shy away from filling in those noticeable holes on my Vestron shelf.... until I received a text message from Diabolik DVD!

This alerted me to their current Vestron sale where most titles are marked down to $15.99! Seeing the opportunity to fill the remaining gaps in my collection I ended up grabbing nine Blu-rays from Diabolik! (Whoops!) Then I immediately opened up the Amazon app on my phone and searched for the remaining titles, most of which were incredibly cheap (except for GOTHIC, which is still fairly expensive), and I was done! I DID IT! I COMPLETED MY VESTRON COLLECTION SUCKAS! Oh wait.... no. No I didn't! DOH!

Shortly after my brief moment of triumph I realized that I was still missing ONE disc - #10, THE UNHOLY! Unfortunately for me, that particular title quietly went out of print! While this isn't typically a huge deal, I quickly discovered that I couldn't find a single Region A copy of the movie anywhere! (And apparently I'm not alone.)  In the end, I managed to procure a Region B copy of the UK Vestron release on eBay. Though it doesn't really fit the aesthetic of the other Vestron discs, I can now confidently say that I own the entirety of Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's series Blu-rays! WOOHOO!

I am very much looking forward to seeing what other titles Lionsgate digs up, and I really hope they keep that awesomely low price point as well! I'm not sure what else they have on the docket, but some possible future Vestron releases could include: 976-EVIL 2, BIG MAN ON CAMPUS, ALIEN WARRIOR, C.O.D., AMERICAN DRIVE-IN, DOORMAN, FEAR (1990), FUNLAND, FUTURE-KILL, DEVIL DOG: HOUND OF HELL, HIDER IN THE HOUSE, THE HUNTERS OF THE GOLDEN COBRA, JENNIFER (1978), NEON MANIACS, PAINT IT BLACK, STRANGE INVADERS, THE MANIPULATOR, THE NIGHT STALKER (1986), and/or THE POWER (1984)! And that's barely the tip of the iceberg of the hundreds of teen sex comedies, Horror flicks, and exploitation films that were released decades ago by the long defunct Vestron Video

That's all for now gang - hopefully you'll be seeing more of me around these parts in coming months! Although I'm not creating much new content these days, I'm still fairly active on social media! To see what other new titles I've added to my collection be sure to follow me on Instagram! For updates on upcoming Blu-rays, new trailers, and fun memes, be sure to follow the Vault on Facebook! STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 01/10 - 01/24/23!

The B-Movie News Vault's Stock Your Vault Logo!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week(s)!

Hello there fellow collectors and welcome to another edition of our handy STOCK YOUR VAULT column! As was the case with the last post, we're tripling up because there are so few titles of interest in the first month of the year! But that doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of cool discs that will have you scrambling to click those order buttons on Amazon and other retailer sites!

January 10th wasn't too shabby and gave us Arrow Video's new Blu-ray releases of THE DUNWICH HORROR (starring Dean Stockwell) and THE EXECUTIONER COLLECTION (a two-film set featuring the late Sonny Chiba!), Sony's new 4K UHD of the beloved Bill Murray comedy GROUNDHOG DAY, and Scream Factory's new 4K release of OUIJA.

The following week was once again light on new releases but boasted Paramount's new 4K steelbook of CLOVERFIELD, Arrow Video's 2-disc double feature of LADY WHIRLWIND & HAPKIDO, and Scream Factory's limited edition 4K steelbook of John Carpenter's (still very relevant) sci-fi classic THEY LIVE! I should also note that Kino Lorber Studio Classics dropped PROGRAMMED TO KILL (aka THE RETALIATOR), as well as a Blu-ray set of Cannon's classic MISSING IN ACTION TRILOGY!

Finally, this week fares a bit better with a larger mix of titles from many of our favorite labels: Kino Lorber Studio Classics gives iconic Charles Bronson revenge flick DEATH WISH its 4K debut, Shout Select brings seven martial arts classics to Blu-ray in the new JACKIE CHAN COLLECTION: VOLUME I, and MVD Rewind Collection adds MEN AT WORK to their Blu-ray catalog! Ronin Flix brings NIGHTMARE MAN to Blu-ray for the first time ever, and Scream Factory adds another modern Horror title to their 4K collection, namely the surprisingly fun FREAKY!

But I'm giving the mantle of "Pick of the Week" to Lionsgate's latest addition to their Vestron Video Collector's Series, namely THE DENTIST COLLECTION! Starring the fantastic Corbin Bersen as the titular villain of these two direct-to-video Horror essentials, this new set offers up new transfers of the films and lots of cool extras, such as feature-length commentaries with director Brian Yuzna and special f/x supervistor Anthony C. Ferrante, isolated score tracks with commentary by Alan Howarth, trailers, cast & crew interviews, and more!

Scroll down to see what came out over the past three weeks, and maybe add a few new discs to your already overflowing shelves with whatever leftover holiday gift cards and cash you have left!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Wow! 2022 is coming to an end rather quickly Vault Dwellers - there's only thirteen days left until Christmas Day! Severin Films' trio of Bruno Mattei action flicks finally get a wider release - brace yourselves for the insanity of BORN TO FIGHT, COP GAME, and DOUBLE TARGET! Scream Factory debuts standard & limited edition steelbook editions of CARRIE, while their parent company does the same for Laika titles CORALINE and PARANORMAN!

Arrow Video brings the sci-fi downer SILENT RUNNING, which, oddly enough, was one of the biggest inspirations for MST3K!, to 4K disc today while 88 Films gives U.S. collectors POLICE STORY 3: SUPERCOP (on 4K & Blu) as well as BLOOD AND DIAMONDS! PARAMOUNT's popular new Horror film SMILE arrives in all formats, and Lionsgate drops a 30th anniversary 4K release for HIGHLANDER! (I guess this means 4Ks of the remaining sequels can't be too far behind?)

Synapse Films just released their standard edition Blu of CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE, and (surprise!) Diabolik DVD has apparently become a distributor and released four new titles today, namely AFTEREFFECTS, HALLUCINATION, MANIAC DRIVER, and NIGHTMARE SYMPHONY! As for my pick of the week, I'm giving it to the new Vestron Video Collector's Series SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION Blu-ray set! This trilogy of direct-to-video sequels features new 2K transfers, new audio commentaries, new cast & crew interviews, & more! You Better Watch Out for Vestron Video Collector's Series' New SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION!

Cover art for the Vestron Video Collector's Series' SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION!
THE REMAINDER OF THE "SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT" FRANCHISE COMES TO BLU-RAY DISC ON DECEMBER 13TH WITH A SURPRISING NUMBER OF BONUS FEATURES!

I absolutely adore the mean-spirited insanity of the original SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, I appreciate the awful (but glorious) cheesiness of PART 2 ("Garbage Day!"), and the 2012 reboot of the original was... okay, but I honestly don't remember much about the rest of the films that make up the series. (Hell, I don't even recall if I've actually seen Parts 3 and 4!) Thankfully on December 13th, I can reacquaint myself with the absolutely insane trio of holiday horror films that involve psychos, witches, and murderous toys! And because this is part of Lionsgate's ongoing Vestron Video Collector's Series line, these movies have truly gotten way more love than they deserve!

Synopses: Prepare for a trilogy of pure terror with this collection of films from the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT series. In BETTER WATCH OUT!, it's a very bloody Christmas after Ricky Caldwell, the notorious "Killer Santa Claus," awakens from a six-year coma with one thing on his mind: murder. In INITIATION, a reporter's investigation into a mysterious death leads her into the clutches of a cult that's chosen her as its new queen, and THE TOY MAKER stars entertainment legend Mickey Rooney as a toy maker whose creations display some very human – and deadly – tendencies.

Egads! I can't believe they put this much effort into this trio of sequels Vault Dwellers: We get new audio commentaries, new cast & crew interviews, still galleries, trailers, and (according to Blu-ray.com's review) greatly improved picture and audio over the previous DVD release! (Note: To those of you preparing to complain about the aspect ratios, the films were originally shot in fullscreen.) I was already looking forward to slapping another Vestron title in line with the others, but now I'm legitimately excited to get this set in the mail next week!

Speaking of which, the SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT COLLECTION will be available everywhere discs are sold on Tuesday, December 13th (which is turning into an expensive day, no?) and should cost between $17 - $18! If you are a completionist that's been waiting to complete your SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT collection, order a copy of this Blu-ray set now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DEEP DISCOUNT, or DIABOLIK DVD!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 09/15/2020!

The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 09/15/2020 is Vestron Video Collector's Series Blu-ray of LITTLE MONTERS (1989)!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings Vault Dwellers and welcome to your weekly dose of all things DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K disc related! Sorry I'm a little late in posting last Tuesday's new titles - it's probably going to be the new norm until I get my son "Action" Jackson on a more normalized sleep schedule. (Ah yes. Sleep... those little slices of death... how I miss them.)

This past Tuesday Kino Lorber Studio Classics released THE GHOST BREAKERS and THE CAT AND THE CANARY to Blu-ray disc, Arrow dropped their Blu of JESUS SHOWS YOU THE WAY TO THE HIGHWAY, Scorpion Releasing unveiled their new Blu-ray of DEF-CON 4, and Warner Bros. gave RED DWARF: THE PROMISED LAND its North American debut!

For you tokusatsu/kaiju fans, Mill Creek released yet another Ultra-set to Blu-ray featuring both UTLRAMAN GINGA and ULTRAMAN GINGA S, MVD Marquee Collection gave the forgotten DAHMER a nice Collector's Edition release on both DVD and Blu-ray, and Paramount released a 5-Movie STEPHEN KING COLLECTION, which features PET SEMATARY and its 2019 remake, SILVER BULLET, THE STAND (TV Mini-Series), and for the first time ever, THE DEAD ZONE featuring Christopher Walken!

But this week totally goes to Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series label, which has returned with a vengeance after remaining quiet for almost a full year! Vestron kicks things off with new Blu-ray discs of LITTLE MONSTERS (1989) and Cronenberg's SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN). Both movies come with slipcovers and a slew of new (and archival) extras, and amazingly both releases are surprisingly cheap, which is great news for us collectors!

To see the full list of this past week's new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HD discs, just keep scrolling Vault Dwellers!

The Vestron Video Collector's Series Finally Returns With Two New Titles: LITTLE MONSTERS & SHIVERS!

Cover art for Vestro Video Collector's Series' Blu-ray release of LITTLE MONSTERS!
MISCHIEVOUS MONSTERS LURKING UNDER BEDS AND PARASITE-FUELED SEX MANIACS HIGHLIGHT THE TWO LATEST ADDITIONS TO THE REKINDLED VESTRON VIDEO COLLECTOR'S SERIES!

Rejoice for Lionsgate's Vestron label is back with two really solid titles! LITTLE MONSTERS has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid - I've always felt that it was a spiritual successor to NIGHTBREED. And speaking of David Cronenberg.... SHIVERS is the other new Vestron release this week! I've never seen it (I plan on rectifying that this weekend) but I'm definitely looking forward to this early body-horror tale that sounds like a mixture of NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and RABID! Both new Blu-ray releases come with a variety of new special features (including audio commentaries and cast & crew interviews) and are remarkably cheap - you'd be a fool not to add them to your collections ASAP Vault Dwellers!

LITTLE MONSTERS (1989)

Synopsis: Brian (Fred Savage - THE PRINCESS BRIDE, THE WIZARD) isn't scared of the monster living under the bed. On the contrary, when he gets to know the wild-eyed boogeyman, Maurice (Howie Mandel - WALK LIKE A MAN, voice of Gizmo in GREMLINS), the pair become fast friends. During the night, Maurice takes his young charge into the netherworld of monsters, where they have a great time making mischief in the lives of sleeping children. But Brian's opinion of Maurice and his freewheeling lifestyle changes when he discovers that he himself is turning into a monster.

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 101 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! Audio Commentary with Jarret Gahan, Editor-in-Chief of CultofMonster.com!
  • NEW! Isolated Score Selections and Audio Interview with Composer David Newman!
  • NEW! "Call Him Maurice" – An Interview with Actor Howie Mandel!
  • NEW! "Beneath the Bed" – An Interview with Producer Andrew Licht!
  • NEW! "Monsters Big & Small" – An Interview with Special Makeup Effects Creator Robert Short!
  • NEW! Vintage Interviews with Actors Fred Savage, Ben Savage, Special Makeup Effects Creator Robert Short, and Director Richard Alan Greenberg!
  • Behind-the-Scenes Footage
  • "Making Maurice" – Vintage Footage of Howie Mandel's Makeup Transformation
  • Vintage EPK & VHS Promo
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Still Gallery
LITTLE MONSTERS is now available on Blu-ray and is shockingly cheap: The introductory price is between $13 - $15! That amazes me because of all the new extras included with this release, and also because all of the previous Vestron titles were in the $20 - $25 range! So relieve this (somewhat traumatic) late 80s children's classic today and get yourself a copy from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Cover art for the Vestron Video Collector's Series Blu-ray release of David Cronenberg's SHIVERS!
SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN - 1975)

Synopsis: After a scientist living in a posh apartment complex slaughters a teen girl and kills himself, investigators discover that the murderer had been carrying on experiments involving deadly parasites. Roger St. Luc (Paul Hampton - WOMEN OF THE PREHISTORIC PLANET, HIT!), a doctor living in the building, and his aide, Nurse Forsythe (Lynn Lowry - THE CRAZIES, THE CAT PEOPLE), then realize that the parasites are on the loose, attacking fellow tenants. And those who become hosts turn into erotically obsessed maniacs who pass the bugs on through violent sex.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 88 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! Audio Commentary with Writer-Director David Cronenberg and Co-Producer Don Carmody!
  • NEW! "Mind Over Matter" – An Interview with Writer-Director David Cronenberg!
  • NEW! "Good Night Nurse" – An Interview with Actress Lynn Lowry!
  • NEW! "Outside and Within" – An Interview with Special Make-Up Effects Creator Joe Blasco!
  • NEW! "Celebrating Cinépix" – An Interview with Greg Dunning!
  • Archival 1998 David Cronenberg Interview
  • Still Gallery with Optional Archival Audio Interview with Executive Producer John Dunning
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • TV Spot
  • Radio Spots
The Vestron Blu-ray release of SHIVERS is also currently available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and goes for between $13 - $15! Again, this price point is mind-blowing considering previous Vestron title pricing, plus the number of new extras created for this release - I really hope this is a continuing trend! Get your copy of SHIVERS now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Learn Who Made Who With Vestron Collector's Series' New Blu-ray of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!

LONG OUT OF PRINT, STEPHEN KING'S SOLO DIRECTORIAL EFFORT FINALLY MAKES ITS WAY TO BLU-RAY IN THIS DELUXE VESTRON RELEASE!

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE may not be the greatest thing to bear Stephen King's name, but the film does have two things going for it: It's the ONLY movie ever directed by King (who was on a steady diet of cocaine at the time) and the only film (to my knowledge) that has an all AC/DC soundtrack. For years, this bad boy was only available on VHS or DVD, but Stephen King's ridiculous tale of mankind's machines retaliating against their creators is finally getting the love it deserves!

Synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate battle of man vs. bloodthirsty machine in this terrifying Stephen King classic! For three horrifying days, the Earth passes through the tail of a mysterious comet. The skies glow an eerie green as humanity waits to see what the fallout will be. But what they imagine is nothing like the nightmare the find - the comet's magnetic fields cause all the machines on Earth to suddenly come to life and terrorize their human creators in a horrific killing spree. Now, it's up to a small group of people trapped in a desolate truck stop to defeat the killer machines - or be killed by them!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 98 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & 2.0

Extras:
  • NEW! Audio Commentary with Writer Tony Magistrale, Author of Hollywood's Steven King!
  • NEW! Audio Commentary by Actor and Comedian Jonah Ray and Blumhouse Film Executive Ryan Turek!
  • NEW! Truck Stop Tales – An Interview with Producer Martha De Laurentiis!
  • NEW! Rage Against the Machines – An Interview with Actress Laura Harrington!
  • NEW! Honeymoon Horrors – Interviews with Actor John Short and Actress Yeardley Smith!
  • NEW! Maximum Carnage – An Interview with Make-Up Effects Creator Dean Gates!
  • NEW! The Wilmington Factor – A Look Back at the Filming of Maximum Overdrive with Members of the Production Crew in North Carolina!
  • NEW! Who Made Who? – An Interview with Murray Engleheart, Co-Author of AC/DC: Maximum Rock & Roll!
  • NEW! Goblin Resurrectus Featurette – The Restoration of the Happy Toyz Goblin!
  • A Kid in King's Court Featurette – An Interview with Actor Holter Graham.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Footage
  • Still Gallery
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • TV Spots
Though Stephen King and Emilio Estevez are noticeably absent from the special features, that is still an impressive number of new extras for this release! MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and currently seems to go for $35 - $40! (Ouch! That is super expensive - unless you've got money to burn, you may want to hold off on buying this one for a while Vault Dwellers!) Order your copy now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

The Vestron Video Collector's Series Adds GOTHIC AND CLASS OF 1999 to its Catalog on January 30th!

MARY SHELLEY GETS HIGH, AND KILLER CYBORGS MASQUERADE AS TEACHERS IN LIONSGATE'S NEWEST VESTRON TITLES!

I've been really happy with the Vestron Video Blu-ray label since they kicked things off with BLOOD DINER and CHOPPING MALL. Their latest additions are definitely making me nostalgic: I've never seen GOTHIC, but its cover sure brings back some memories of my neighborhood's old mom & pop video store.

However, I have seen CLASS OF 1999 several times. This bizarre followup to CLASS OF 1984 is cheesy in all the right ways and has an awesome end credits song (Come the Day by Midge Ure)! Though the price of these releases typically scares me away, I do look forward to adding these titles to my growing collection.

GOTHIC Synopsis: 1816. A sprawling villa in Switzerland is the setting for the night of the “Haunted Summer,” when five famous friends gather around an ancient skull to conjure up their darkest fears. Poets Lord Byron and Percy Shelley; Shelley’s fiancée, Mary Godwin; Mary’s stepsister, Claire Clairmont; and Byron’s friend, Dr. John Polidori, spend a hallucinogenic evening confronting their fears in an orgiastic frenzy of shock lunacy that later inspired Mary Shelley to write the classic FRANKENSTEIN and Dr. Polidori to pen THE VAMPYRE, which became the basis for the creation of DRACULA. One fateful evening, two legends were born, in Ken Russell’s GOTHIC.

Not Doctor Who, but an incredible simulation.

GOTHIC comes to Blu-ray on January 30th as the 13th title in the Vestron Video Collector's Series and will run you about $25 - $30! Order yourself a copy now at AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

CLASS OF 1999 Synopsis: The time is the future, and youth gang violence is so high that the areas around some schools have become “free fire zones” into which not even the police will venture.

When Miles Langford (Malcolm McDowell), the principal of Kennedy High School, decides to take his school back from the gangs, robotics specialist Dr. Robert Forrest (Stacy Keach) provides “tactical education units.”

These human-like androids have been programmed to teach and are supplied with weapons to handle discipline problems. These kids will get a lesson in staying alive!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 99 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
