Vault Master's Pick of of the Week(s)!

Hey fellow collectors! Between working a lot of overtime, traveling to another State for the holidays, and being laid up for a bit with the flu, I've fallen behind on my duties! But things have finally calmed down so here is the first STOCK YOUR VAULT post of 2023!

As is usually the case with the start of a new year there's not a lot of new titles coming out weekly to fill a post. so there will be fewer Stock Your Vault posts throughout January. But by February, the release slate will start to beef up again, and oh boy is there ever a lot of cool stuff coming down the pipe!

Last year ended with a whimper: The first Season of HBO's GAME OF THRONES: HOUSE OF THE DRAGON arrived on both formats, as did the first season of AMC's TALES OF THE WALKING DEAD, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics ended things on a high note with a new 4K release for THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE! 

Universal dropped their intensely debated trilogy capper HALLOWEEN ENDS (alone and in a 3-film collection), VCI brought the classic Bela Lugosi serial THE PHANTOM CREEPS to Blu-ray, and the (apparently much-loved) TERRIFIER 2 made its Collector's Edition Blu-ray debut! 

Moving on to this week, there were only really four new titles out: Criterion's THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN (a personal favorite of mine that I'll have to upgrade now!), Warner Bros.' BLACK ADAM, Lionsgate's PREY FOR THE DEVIL, and Paramount's first season of STAR TREK: PRODIGY!

While I toyed with the idea of choosing a "pick of the week" for each week, I decided instead to choose just one best overall new release for this post, and that is Shout! Factory's new 4K Ultra HD Blu of WARGAMES! Along with a new 4K scan (made from original camera negative) this 2-disc set comes with a feature-length commentary by director John Badham (and the film's two writers), plus a handful of featurettes, and the original theatrical trailer!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Another week, another slew of awesome Blu-ray and 4K releases! Welcome to the (sometimes) weekly STOCK YOUR VAULT column fellow collectors. This week is absolutely loaded with awesome titles that you'll either want to gift to others, or add to your own Christmas wishlists!

After multiple release date changes, VCI finally dropped their 50th Anniversary 4K (and Blu-ray) of Bob Clark's CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS, while Scream Factory gave Bob Clark's other notorious holiday favorite BLACK CHRISTMAS a stellar new 4K UHD release! Paramount re-released the beloved Walter Hill classic THE WARRIORS, this time in a new Blu-ray steelbook, gave PULP FICTION its 4K debut (in standard and steelbook editions), and brought 48 HOURS (and its sequel ANOTHER 48 HOURS) to 4K for the first time! (Get them separately or in a double feature!)

Well Go USA brought the stellar Korean zombie flick TRAIN TO BUSAN to 4K, Lionsgate released Kevin Smith's CLERKS III to Blu-ray, and Arrow Video dropped THE LEECH and NIGHTMARE AT NOON (formally a Scream Factory title) to Blu-ray disc! Phil Tippett's MAD GOD arrived on Blu-ray this week from Shudder, Mill Creek added yet another Ultraman series to DVD (this time its the animated ULTRAMAN KIDS series), and The Warner Archive Collection debuted the original ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN on Blu-ray disc!

Even though a lot of the titles I just mentioned are absolutely awesome, I made my pick of the week Arrow Video's brand new Limited Edition SHAWSCOPE: VOLUME 2 boxed set! Boasting ten Blu-ray discs in a gorgeous collectible box, this set features hours of bonus features and new HD masters of fourteen Shaw Bros. classics including: 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER, DISCIPLES OF THE 36TH CHAMBER, MAD MONKEY KUNG FU, FIVE SUPERFIGHTERS, INVINCIBLE SHAOLIN, THE KID WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, MAGNIFICENT RUFFIANS, TEN TIGERS OF KWANGTUNG, MY YOUNG AUNTIE, MERCENARIES FROM HONG KONG, THE BOXER'S OMEN, MARTIAL ARTS OF SHAOLIN, and THE BARE-FOOTED KID!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 11/22/22 and 11/29/22!

 

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 11/22!

November is about to end gang, which means that it's that sad time of the year that requires us to (GASP!) spend money on other people! (AHHHH! NOOO!) Luckily this is also typically the slow season for new releases from most boutique labels, so even if you're not shopping for others, your bank accounts can take a bit of a breather.

As has been the case lately, I'm a little behind on reporting the new Blu-ray and 4K releases, so this week is another double-up edition to get ya'll caught up on all the new stuff that you may want to add to your growing collections! Last week had a pretty solid lineup of new titles on both formats with Kino Lorber putting out MYSTERY MEN and HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER on 4K UHD, as well as new Blu-rays of THE BLOOD BEAST TERROR and Season 3 of NIGHT GALLERY!

Scream Factory delivered an all new 4K release of THE COMPANY OF WOLVES (a fantastical retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood" that is at times visually stunning, but isn't really my cup of tea), while,  Blue Underground gave the time travel classic THE FINAL COUNTDOWN its 4K debut, and Dark Force Entertainment released a trio of their popular Drive-In Double Features!

But despite all that good stuff, I chose Shout Factory's 4K debut of the original ROLLERBALL as my pick of the week! Along with the new 4K transfer, the disc comes with two audio commentaries, trailers, and a handful of archival featurettes about the making of this classic dystopian sci-fi flick!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 11/29!

Moving on to this week, well... there really isn't a whole lot gang. Discotek Media brings THE LEGEND OF DINOSAURS AND MONSTER BIRDS to Blu-ray for the first time, Cauldron Films dropped exclusive special edition releases of SHANGHAI JOE and CONVOY BUSTERS, and Season 4 of WESTWORLD arrived on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD!

The winner of my "coveted" pick of the week was easy this time around Vault Dwellers: Vinegar Syndrome's gorgeous 4K release of Tobe Hooper's TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2! Along with a pristine-looking transfer, this 2-disc set is absolutely loaded with special features including FOUR audio commentaries, an extended making-of documentary, new and archival cast & crew interviews, multiple featurettes, trailers, deleted scenes, and MORE! This release was limited to 10,000 copies, so if you see one online (or in the wild) jump on it fast!

VCI Enters the 4K Fray With a 50th Anniversary Release of CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS!

ON DECEMBER 6TH, YOU CAN WATCH ORVILLE'S "COMING OUT PARTY" IN GLORIOUS ULTRA HIGH-DEFINITION!

Bob Clark had a pretty eclectic career and made films ranging from raunchy teen sex comedies (PORKY'S and PORKY'S II: THE NEXT DAY), to Horror classics (DEATHDREAM and BLACK CHRISTMAS), to Christmas essentials (A CHRISTMAS STORY), to kids movies (BABY GENIUSES), and even gender-bending crime movies (SHE-MAN: A STORY OF FIXATION).

But today we're going to focus on his first true feature-length film, 1972's CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS, which is getting a new 50th anniversary Blu-ray and 4K UHD release from VCI in November! While not in my "zombie top ten," I do enjoy this low-budget horror romp and count myself lucky to have seen it in 35mm!

Synopsis: Five young kinky actors and their artistic director come to a desolate and nearly forgotten burial island, complete with a morbid history of MURDER, RAPE, CURSES and DEMONS. Alan (Alan Ormsby), the brilliant but bizarre Director of the company, has brought them to this foreboding place to dabble in witchcraft; specifically to dig up a fresh corpse and use it in a ritual ceremony which is supposed to raise the dead from their graves. 

It seems as though Alan has really gathered his "children" here, only to play a practical joke on them and then to party the rest of the night away. However, the joke's on Alan. His bizarre ritual ceremony really does raise the dead from their graves... only they're in no mood to party!

Along with the upgraded picture quality (which I currently cannot confirm is an all new transfer, or a 4K upconversion from the previous 2K transfer they put out in 2016), all of the previous extras are included, but I'm personally excited to check out that new feature-length documentary that's on this disc! Originally slated for release on October 11th, VCI repeatedly pushed back their 50th Anniversary release of CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS until December 6th (ditto for their Region A Blu-ray disc). The upcoming 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of CHILDREN should cost between $27 - $30 (though the price may drop before release), and can be pre-ordered now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD! 

Get Your Bruceploitation Fix This Week from VCI and The Film Detective!

A BRUCE LI CLASSIC AND, WHAT SOME HAVE DUBBED THE "WORST BRUCEPLOITATION FILM OF ALL TIME," MAKE THEIR BLU-RAY DEBUTS ON MAY 12TH & 15TH!

After the unexpected passing of Bruce Lee in 1973, there was a mad dash to fill the void he had left behind, resulting in a bizzaro film sub-genre known as "Bruceploitation." Various pretenders to Bruce's throne (e.g. Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Dragon Lee, Bruce Lai, Bruce Liang) earned lead roles in martial arts films that were made to capitalize on the popularity of the deceased martial arts superstar. Some of these include RE-ENTER THE DRAGON, BRUCE LEE FIGHTS BACK FROM THE GRAVE, THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE, RETURN OF THE FISTS OF FURY, THE DRAGON LIVES AGAIN, and the two films I'm posting about today, namely DYNAMO and FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH!

DYNAMO is part of VCI's "Pearl River Collection" and features an all new 2K restoration of the Bruce Li vehicle with new bonus features! FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH from The Film Detective is limited to 1,500 copies and offers up a new 4K restoration (made from an original film print) and a making-of featurette! DYNAMO (SPECIAL EDITION - 1978)

Synopsis: When a cab driver is discovered by corrupt producers as a successor to super star Bruce Lee, they find his rebellious and individual nature may be too much for even their massive enterprise to contain. This fan favorite in the sub-genre of Bruceploitation stars Ho Tsung-Tao (Bruce Li), Ku Feng, and Chiang Tao. DYNAMO was directed by THE SUPER INFRAMAN helmer, Hua Shan.

There was initially going to be a new mini-documentary entitled The Taiwan Connection on this disc, but it is apparently in the process of being expanded upon and should be popping up on a future "Pearl River Collection" release. Still, with two cuts of the film, multiple audio options & commentary, and a handful of featurettes, this seems like a pretty solid release! DYNAMO is now available to own on Blu-ray and should cost between $20 - $22! Get a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH (1980)

Synopsis: Action-packed FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH is celebrating its 40th anniversary like never before with a stunning 4K restoration and never before seen special features! This film was first presented in 1980 by veteran distributor and producer Terry Levene and director Matthew Mallinson. FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH places the 1979 World Karate Championship at center stage, where martial artists take their shot at eliminating the competition and claiming the title of “Successor to the Bruce Lee Legacy.”

FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH combines eye-popping combat scenes and archival footage of Lee himself, with mockumentary-style interviews hosted by Academy Award nominee Adolph Caesar and a martial arts masters Fred Williamson, Ron Van Clief, and more as they emerge from every corner of the martial arts world to give their take on whether any competitor could be deemed worthy of the Bruce Lee legacy.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors of physical media, and welcome to the final STOCK YOUR VAULT post of February 2020! There were a lot of great releases in the past few weeks, but this week in particular is loaded with new titles!

Tokyo Shock comes out of nowhere with a new (DVD and) Blu-ray release of GAPPA: THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER, Synapse brings the Unrated Producer's Cut of HOT DOG... THE MOVIE to DVD & Blu-ray, and Vinegar Syndrome just dropped their standard Blu-ray release of SPOOKIES for those that missed out on the Limited Edition!

Scream Factory's lone release this week is their Collector's Edition Blu-ray of PET SEMATARY TWO, Arrow Video brings DEADLY MANOR and the ONE MISSED CALL TRILOGY to Blu-ray, and Severin Films brings a trio of new titles to DVD and Blu-ray disc, including THE ASTROLOGER, CRIES OF PLEASURE, and NIGHT OF OPEN SEX.

Mill Creek Entertainment delivers a double dose of Ultraman today with two series that have never been released in the U.S. - THE RETURN OF ULTRAMAN and ULTRAMAN ORB: THE ORIGIN SAGA, while SRS Cinema brings a pair of indie kaiju flicks to Blu-ray disc, namely REIGO: KING OF THE SEA MONSTERS, and RAIGA: GOD OF THE MONSTERS! Also out today is Richard Stanley's COLOR OUT OF SPACE starring Nicolas Cage, which is supposedly the start of a new H.P. Lovecraft trilogy!

But my pick of the week has to be Mondo Macabro's all new Region Free Blu-ray of THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD, which features Paul Naschy in his signature role of Waldemar Daninsky! The film has been restored in 4K from an original negative and comes with a variety of extras, including interviews, an audio commentary, an introduction from Paul Naschy, and more!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow Blu-ray collectors and Happy (early) Valentine's Day! Though several Blu-rays have been pushed back a few weeks (e.g. Mondo Macabro's THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD) this week still features a fairly decent lineup of new titles - some of which you may even want to gift to your significant others!

Well Go USA brings Takashi Miike's FIRST LOVE to Blu-ray and DVD, Warner Bros. releases their recent SWAMP THING TV series, and Arrow Video delivers their single-disc (director's cut) release of ROBOCOP to those that may have missed out on their fantastic Limited Edition release from last year.

Lionsgate pairs up all five RAMBO films in one Blu-ray set (ditto for JOHN WICK: CHAPTERS 1 - 3), SHUTTER ISLAND comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in a new Steelbook release, Scorpion Releasing debuts THE KILLING TIME to Blu-ray, and Mill Creek Entertainment adds four more titles to its line of Retro VHS-style Blus, including HUDSON HAWK, NO MERCY, VIBES, and WHEN A STRANGER CALLS!

The final season of PREACHER is now available on Blu-ray, as is Troma's snazzy 2-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition release of TERROR FIRMER, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics gives both THE STING II and TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 their Blu-ray debuts!

With all these cool new releases, it would take something truly amazing to top them all and become my pick of the week. And that something is Scream Factory's new Collector's Edition Blu-ray of MY BLOODY VALENTINE! Along with a new 4K restoration of both the theatrical and "uncut" versions of the film, this release comes with a NEW director's commentary, tons of cast & crew interviews, and more!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 01/21/2020!

As January 2020 heads towards it's conclusion, we get a slight reprieve this week. The release slate of new DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HD discs isn't very big - probably because our pals at Scream Factory and Arrow Video seem to have taken a week off. And honestly that's not a bad thing because February is shaping up to be a really expensive month!

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has the most new releases today with their new Blu-rays of HIGH-BALLIN', SEMI-TOUGH, TOBRUK, ULTZANA'S RAID, and THE WAR LORD, and VCI is a close second with their new releases of THE PHANTOM CREEPS and GORDON OF GHOST CITY serials, as well as their new 25th Anniversary double feature of MOMMY & MOMMY 2!

Universal brings KITTEN WITH A WHIP to Blu-ray for the first time along with last year's horror flop COUNTDOWN, Lionsgate debuts Kevin Smith's JAY & SILENT BOB REBOOT, and for fans of "zombedy" flicks, you get your choice of ZOMBIELAND 2: DOUBLE TAP and last year's LITTLE MONSTERS (Region A Import) which features Lupita Nyong'o and Josh Gad!

But this week's big winner simply has to be Blue Underground's stellar 3-Disc Limited Edition Blu-ray of Lucio Fulci's HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY! The final portion of The Maestro's GATES OF HELL TRILOGY boasts a new 4K scan, a bunch of new extras, and a soundtrack CD! It goes without saying that if you're a fan of Fulci, or a fan of Italian Horror in general, you absolutely need this release in your collection!

Get Poked by BRUCE'S DEADLY FINGERS on May 8th!

VCI BRINGS A CLASSIC BRUCE-SPLOITATION TITLE TO BLU-RAY WITH A NEW 2K TRANSFER & EXTRAS!

While I know of the the Brucesploitation sub-genre, I've honestly only seen a handful of films featuring faux Bruce Lee actors, which became all the rage after Lee died in 1973. Bruce Le was one of the more prominent Clones of Bruce Lee, and starred in several dozen films as a Lee knock-off, including BIG BOSS II, ENTER THE GAME OF DEATH, and BRUCE LE'S GREATEST REVENGE (aka WAY OF THE DRAGON 2)! Hopefully this proves to be a popular title and leads to more more Brucesploitation titles in high-definition!

Synopsis: After malicious gangsters capture Bruce Lee's ex-girlfriend, a young martial artist attempts to rescue her - and the late master's book containing lethal techniques for killing with one's fingers. BRUCE'S DEADLY FINGERS offers up plenty of Kung-fu action and mayhem, including a particularly gruesome scene involving the torture of a girl with a deadly snake!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Well gang, March is just about over and the movie gods have graced us with a pretty good mix of new DVDs & Blu-rays this week! Kino Classics graces us with Season One of The Outer Limits (the original series) on Blu-ray, along with THE SOLDIER, VCI delivers a remastered edition of CITY OF THE DEAD, and Criterion Collection gives SCANNERS a Blu-ray only release.

The highly divisive STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI is now available in all formats, as is the first season of Marvel's Legion, and Vinegar Syndrome has released a slew of new stuff including BABYFACE II, a new Peekarama double feature, and Volumes I & II of their 5 Films - 5 Years boxed sets!

Scream Factory holds sway over all this week with their new limited edition steelbooks for ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and PRINCE OF DARKNESS, I REMEMBER YOU (an IFC Midnight title), and a pretty stacked Collector's Edition of BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON!
