Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

It's been nearly a year since the last Stock Your Vault post Vault Dwellers! I don't want to get your hopes and declare my official return but... let's just say you'll be seeing more content here, and over at the main site (and over at my Patreon too), and soon! 

For the triumphant return of this popular (and handy) News Vault column, please take a gander at all the new Blu-ray and 4K titles of interest for September 9th! 

Some of the more notable releases for the week include Universal's JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH (a serviceable re-quel with some neat hybrid dinosaurs - get it singly or in the 7-Film Collection), Lionsgate's BALLERINA (which takes place in the JOHN WICK cinematic universe), and the bizarre surf-themed Nic Cage vehicle, THE SURFER (also from Lionsgate).

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Hey gang! My apologies for failing to post last week! Between traveling for the holidays, and a rigorous work week leading up to Thanksgiving, I unfortunately didn't have the time to share this past week's new Blu-ray & 4K releases! But now I'm back (and nearly a week late) with the newest batch of discs that you just might want to add to your collection!

The biggest "surprise" this week is that Disney's deluxe 4K steelbook releases of their most recent Marvel and STAR WARS fare (listed below). With the current glut of streaming platforms and the limited digital availability of some films and TV series, it's nice to see that "The House of Mouse" is still catering to us collectors! (Here's hoping NetFlix pays attention and follows suit at some point!)

Speaking of steelbooks, there's a LOT of them out this week: 20th Century Films' ALIEN: ROMULUS (a film that I found to be frustratingly disappointing), MPI's HATCHET COLLECTION (originally a Dark Sky Films' website exclusive - comes with a new hour-long documentary), Paramount's GALAXY QUEST (new 4K restoration, Dolby Atmos audio, & featurette) and PULP FICTION (new fancy packaging, lobby cards, and other "junk"), Universal's 20th Anniversary Edition of SHAUN OF THE DEAD (new 4K restoration, Dolby Atmos audio, & 20th anniversary featurette), and Scream Factory's (now triple-dipped) PUMPKINHEAD. 

Aside from a new 4K restoration made from the film's original negative, the only thing to set this release apart from the ones that came before it is its bad-ass cover art! (I've seen a lot of folks complaining about it online, but I think it looks absolutely savage!) As for extras, nothing new has been added, but at least the wealth of the bonus features from previous releases have been ported over, including: a feature-length commentary, a tribute to director Stan Winston, a five-part making-of documentary, cast & crew interviews, and more!

Other discs of note: Dark Sky Films' RIPPY (a killer zombie kangaroo epic starring Michael Biehn - available on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD), Universal's THE WILD ROBOT (a heartfelt animated feature that everyone seemed to love), Scream Factory's 4K of THE GIFT (lots of bonus features, plus Katie Holmes topless in 4K!), and Severin Films' HARD WOOD: THE ADULT FEATURES OF ED WOOD (4 feature films, some with soft and hardcore cuts) and THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES (now separate from their Ray Dennis Steckler set)!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 11/19/24!

 

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Welcome! Welcome one and all to the first Stock Your Vault post since umm.... January?! Egads! Well in a (some would say a vain) attempt to get back into the swing of things, your friendly neighborhood Vault Master is here to share good tidings of new physical media releases on Blu-ray and 4K UHD! And this week is absolutely loaded with fantastic titles from all of your favorite boutique labels, so strap in and brace yourselves for pure awesome!

While there are a lot of Blu-ray and 4K titles to be excited for, I'd have to say the two most highly-anticipated ones are Toho's GODZILLA: MINUS ONE and Universal's 40th Anniversary release of THE TERMINATOR! The Oscar-winning MINUS ONE offers up a gorgeous 4K presentation with various audio tracks (including a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD English dub!), featurettes, and trailers. Even upon release day, I honestly still don't know if the bonus features have English subtitles - I guess I'll find out when I pick up a copy in the near future! Also, as of my posting this, it would seem that the Limited Edition Steelbook is completely OOP, which absolutely sucks, because it's the only way to get a copy of GODZILLA: MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR.

THE TERMINATOR comes fully restored in 4K with a DolbyVision/HDR presentation of the film, plus a Dolby Atmos audio track option! The disc includes a handful of featurettes ported over from previous releases, as well as seven deleted scenes! I've read a few reviews about this disc and it is getting rave reviews for the quality of the restoration, so I do believe it is time for me to upgrade from my old Blu-ray disc!

Other releases worth noting are: Warner Bros.' 4K of BLAZING SADDLES, Shout! Studios' fantastically expensive 4K collector's sets of THE DARK CRYSTAL and LABYRINTH, Kino Lorber's 1,000 CONVICTS AND A WOMAN (which is #20 in their Kino Cult line), Universal's SPEAK NO EVIL (which is apparently a worthy remake of the bleak original), and Arrow Video's limited editions of TOMIE (which is part of their recent love affair with J-Horror films), and A SIMPLE PLAN.

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors, and welcome to another edition of our (somewhat weekly) Stock Your Vault column! Last week may have hit your bank accounts hard, and next week most certainly will, but this week is pretty light on new titles so feel free to take a breather!

Scream Factor's lone release was the mostly forgotten LOST SOULS (released theatrically back in 2000), Arrow Video gave RINGU a nice limited edition 4K release (grab it if you want the new artwork, double-sided foldout poster, and collectible booklet that are exclusive to this release!), and for all of you luchador fans, Indicator continues to break into the U.S. market, this time with two (standard edition) Blu-rays of SANTO VS. EVIL BRAIN and SANTO VS. INFERNAL MEN!

Warner Bros. dropped their 50th Anniversary 4K of Friedkin's THE EXORCIST, Universal hit us with a pair of new 4K discs for THE BLACK PHONE and COCAINE BEAR (two of my recent favorites!), and Radiance Films added THE DEAD MOTHER to their slowly-growing catalog! And with so little in the way of competition this week, it was easy to choose Sony Pictures' THE LAST DRAGON as my "pick of the week!" With its new 4K restoration, new Dolby Atmos audio track, steelbook packaging, and new fan commentary, it's definitely a worthy upgrade that fans will definitely want to pick up!


I've pretty much mentioned everything that's out this week, except for a handful of new anime titles, but feel free to scroll a tad bit further to see the entirety of this week's measly lineup! STOCK YOUR VAULT: RINGING IN 2023 EDITION!

 

Vault Master's Pick of of the Week(s)!

Hey fellow collectors! Between working a lot of overtime, traveling to another State for the holidays, and being laid up for a bit with the flu, I've fallen behind on my duties! But things have finally calmed down so here is the first STOCK YOUR VAULT post of 2023!

As is usually the case with the start of a new year there's not a lot of new titles coming out weekly to fill a post. so there will be fewer Stock Your Vault posts throughout January. But by February, the release slate will start to beef up again, and oh boy is there ever a lot of cool stuff coming down the pipe!

Last year ended with a whimper: The first Season of HBO's GAME OF THRONES: HOUSE OF THE DRAGON arrived on both formats, as did the first season of AMC's TALES OF THE WALKING DEAD, and Kino Lorber Studio Classics ended things on a high note with a new 4K release for THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE! 

Universal dropped their intensely debated trilogy capper HALLOWEEN ENDS (alone and in a 3-film collection), VCI brought the classic Bela Lugosi serial THE PHANTOM CREEPS to Blu-ray, and the (apparently much-loved) TERRIFIER 2 made its Collector's Edition Blu-ray debut! 

Moving on to this week, there were only really four new titles out: Criterion's THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN (a personal favorite of mine that I'll have to upgrade now!), Warner Bros.' BLACK ADAM, Lionsgate's PREY FOR THE DEVIL, and Paramount's first season of STAR TREK: PRODIGY!

While I toyed with the idea of choosing a "pick of the week" for each week, I decided instead to choose just one best overall new release for this post, and that is Shout! Factory's new 4K Ultra HD Blu of WARGAMES! Along with a new 4K scan (made from original camera negative) this 2-disc set comes with a feature-length commentary by director John Badham (and the film's two writers), plus a handful of featurettes, and the original theatrical trailer!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 11/15/22!

 

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors and welcome to an almost on-time edition of our world famous STOCK YOUR VAULT column! This week offers up a great selection of new Blu-ray and 4K releases that span every genre, with a heavy dose of both Action and Comedy! If you're in the process of making a holiday wishlist, well grab a pen because there are definitely some titles here that you're gonna want for Christmas!

Criterion Collection just released a Blu-ray set of the  INFERNAL AFFAIRS TRILOGY, while Lionsgate dropped THE INHABITANT and Ti West's PEARL onto Blu-ray disc! Lionsgate also finally released Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS to 4K  this week as well!

If you're looking for laughs, Paramount re-released AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL to Blu-ray and gave WAYNE'S WORLD a gorgeous 4K release, while Shout Select brought the absolutely hilarious USED CARS to 4K UHD for the first time! And how's this for a head-scratcher: Warner Bros. dropped the all new AQUA TEEN FOREVER: PLANTASM without any warning, on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD. (Seriously, did any of you see a trailer or ad for this one, because I sure as hell didn't!)

Universal put out their COMPLETE BOURNE COLLECTION on 4K this past Tuesday, along with the unexpected (and likely unwanted) sequel R.I.P.D. 2: RISE OF THE DAMNED! Mill Creek released two more ULTRAMAN series to DVD, namely ULTRAMAN MAX and ULTRAMAN NEXUS (which also comes with the feature film ULTRAMAN: THE NEXT), and Grindhouse Releasing's fabulous new 2-disc Collector's Edition of DEATH GAME is now readily available at all retailers!

But this week's Pick of the Week goes to Shout! Factory for their new SONNY CHIBA COLLECTION! Featuring seven of the martial arts star's classic films (YAKUZA WOLF 1 & 2, THE BODYGUARD, KARATE KILLER, SHOGUN'S SHADOW, SAMURAI REINCARNATION, and SWORDS OF VENGEANCE), this new Blu-ray set contains trailers for the films, as well as an interview with the late and great Shinichi Chiba!

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New Blu-rays & 4K Discs for 05/10/2022!

 

VAULT MASTER'S PICK OF THE WEEK!

Welcome fellow collectors to yet another new edition of the News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT column! This week's slate of new releases are substantially better than what was released last week, with multiple titles finally making their high-def debut!

Paramount continues its quest to milk FRIDAY THE 13TH fans for every penny with their "new" 40th Anniversary limited edition steelbook of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3, Cleopatra brings Santiago Fernandez Calvete's A TASTE OF BLOOD to Blu-ray and includes a soundtrack CD in their release, and Universal takes advantage of their upcoming JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION with standalone 4K releases of the previous five films in the franchise!

Universal also boasts an all new 4K set featuring five Alfred Hitchcock classics, including FAMILY PLOT, MARNIE, SABOTEUR, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, and THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY, all of which are also available singly if you just want to cherry pick the titles you want!

Scream Factory does Wes Craven fans a big service with their Collector's Edition release of CURSED (a film title that was way too on the nose once you learn about the film's troubled production), which boasts two cuts of the film (theatrical and unrated - sadly the "Craven cut" seems to be lost), new cast & crew interviews, a making-of featurette, and more! And while this release would typically be my pick of the week, that honor instead goes to Shout! Factory's THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS, a film that's been on my WANTED ON BLU-RAY shortlist for some time! Although it is a barebones release, this is the first time that this cinematic adventure (which is based very loosely on actual events) has been available on the Blu-ray format, and as a longtime fan, I cannot wait to see this movie in crystal clarity!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings from the great beyond Vault Dwellers - I sincerely hope you are all doing well! It's been WAY too long since my last post and yours truly is trying to ease back into things after a long hiatus! Just to give you all a quick update: In the past seven months I started a new job (career?), took up residence in a new State, and have been trying to get the apartment in order and find solutions to having a far too large movie collection.

Speaking of collections, it's time to blow the dust off the Stock Your Vault column and tell ya'll what you can add to your Blu-ray shelves! This week's list of new titles is a rather small one that consists mostly of direct-to-Blu-ray schlock, but there are a few gems you may want to pick up.

Universal brings Joe Carnahan's SMOKIN' ACES to 4K UHD, while Shoreline Entertainment delivers films featuring killer bunnies (RABBIT WOMAN), genetically modified scorpions (TAIL STING), angry Japanese spirits (YOKAI), and a FEMALE WEREWOLF! And at the top of the heap is Shout! Factory's bare bones release of DINOSAUR WORLD, which seems like a mashup of THE HUNGER GAMES and JURASSIC PARK/WORLD.

There's not much else to get excited about gang, but if you're curious about what else is arriving on Blu-ray this Tuesday just scroll onward!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors and welcome to another edition of the News Vault's weekly STOCK YOUR VAULT! I'm know I'm super llate in posting this (sorry!) but hey, better late than never right? This past week was a bit light on new titles but as is typically the case, there are some definite gems you may want to add to your growing collections!

Full Moon Pictures brought THE HAND THAT FEEDS THE DEAD to DVD & Blu-ray, Image Entertainment gave RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE its physical media debut, and HBO dropped season one of LOVECRAFT COUNTRY on DVD & Blu-ray disc!

Well Go USA's lone release this past week was THE SWORDSMAN, Lionsgate released FEAR OF RAIN and THE VERY EXCELLENT MR. DUNDEE (the latter should be a real treat for all you Paul Hogan fans out there), Paramount debuted GOOD BURGER on Blu-ray disc, and Kino Lorber once again makes a show of force with the largest number of Blu-ray releases, including JETSONS: THE MOVIE, THE UNDERNEATH, THE UNSEEN (distributed on behalf of Scorpion Releasing), and SLITHIS (in conjunction with Code Red)!

Honestly, there wasn't really a big/important Blu-ray release this week, so I had a tough time choosing my "pick of the week." I settled on Image Entertainment's new Blu of ARCHENEMY starring Joe Manganiello because it sounds interesting, and because Joe recently liked a tweet of mine when I promoted the film a week or two ago. (Thanks Joe - you rock!)

There are some titles I haven't yet mentioned (like the new Limited Edition "Titans of Cult" 4K Steelbook of PACIFIC RIM) - to peep them all out just continue scrolling down! You might find a few things you want but I'd personally suggest saving your money because much more worthwhile releases are on the horizon!

The Most Controversial Film of the Year is Here: THE HUNT is Now Available on DVD & Blu-ray!

HUNTING HUMANS IS ALL THE RAGE IN THIS (NOT-SO) POLITICALLY CHARGED THRILLER FROM BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS!

I remember all the hoopla when the first trailers for THE HUNT hit the web, and I for one was more than ready to scope out this darkly humorous contemporary version of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. Surprisingly the film was shelved due to outrage caused by its perceived anti-conservative bent (which apparently isn't the case), and didn't get released in theaters until March of this year.

And then the global pandemic happened, theater chains shut down, and the film just didn't have enough time to find its audience. But now that THE HUNT is available on DVD & Blu-ray disc, those of us that missed it on the big screen can finally give it a look (if we haven't already rented it digitally that is)!

Synopsis: In this subversive satire, a group of elites gather for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites' master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, Glow), knows The Hunters' game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off one by one as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.

JORDAN PEELE'S "US" AND "GET OUT"  HAVE BEEN PAIRED UP IN A NEW 4K ULTRA HD DOUBLE FEATURE FROM UNIVERSAL!

It's kind of funny how people who have spent a large part of their careers doing Comedy, can be so adept at crafting great Horror stories. Case in point, Jordan Peele: His movie GET OUT, which I saw during it's initial theatrical release, was really enjoyable, and I've heard a lot of good things about his followup film US (which I still have yet to see).

Now both of his critically-acclaimed tales of terror are available in a handy 4K double feature set from Universal! So if you've held off on buying either film, now's the time to add some Peele to your movie collection!

US Synopsis: From Academy Award-winning visionary Jordan Peele comes another original nightmare. Starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o (12 YEARS A SLAVE) and Winston Duke (BLACK PANTHER), an endearing American family is pitted against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.

DOOM: ANNIHILATION - Coming to DVD & Blu-ray on October 1st from Universal Pictures!

FOURTEEN YEARS AFTER "DOOM" FLOPPED IN THEATERS, UNIVERSAL CREATES A NEW ADAPTION AND SENDS IT STRAIGHT TO HOME VIDEO HELL!

The closest thing we've ever gotten to an actual DOOM movie was John Carpenter's GHOSTS OF MARS. Oof. Think about that for a second - one of Carpenter's weakest filmmaking efforts hit closer to the mark than a big-budget studio film. And while DOOM: ANNIHILATION may be a bit truer to its source material, the fact that Universal is quietly dumping it onto DVD & Blu-ray next Tuesday doesn't bode well for this movie. But hey, you never know Vault Dwellers, this DOOM reboot might be a lot better than any of us are anticipating. Or.... maybe not.

Synopsis: Based on the popular original video game, DOOM: ANNIHILATION is an explosive, terrifying thrill ride. On the darkest moon of Mars, scientists have found an ancient portal which allows teleportation throughout the universe. Considered to be mankind's greatest discovery, it's actually a gateway from hell, unleashing a swarm of demons looking to steal the souls of everyone who gets in their way. It's up to Lieutenant Joan Dark and an elite unit of Marines to destroy an ever-growing horde of bloodsucking and soul-stealing beasts and prevent them from taking over planet earth.
