The B-Movie News Vault's STOCK YOUR VAULT Logo!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week for 02/16/2021 is Image Entertainment's ARCHENEMY!
Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

Greetings fellow collectors and welcome to another edition of the News Vault's weekly STOCK YOUR VAULT! I'm know I'm super llate in posting this (sorry!) but hey, better late than never right? This past week was a bit light on new titles but as is typically the case, there are some definite gems you may want to add to your growing collections!

Full Moon Pictures brought THE HAND THAT FEEDS THE DEAD to DVD & Blu-ray, Image Entertainment gave RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE its physical media debut, and HBO dropped season one of LOVECRAFT COUNTRY on DVD & Blu-ray disc!

Well Go USA's lone release this past week was THE SWORDSMAN, Lionsgate released FEAR OF RAIN and THE VERY EXCELLENT MR. DUNDEE (the latter should be a real treat for all you Paul Hogan fans out there), Paramount debuted GOOD BURGER on Blu-ray disc, and Kino Lorber once again makes a show of force with the largest number of Blu-ray releases, including JETSONS: THE MOVIE, THE UNDERNEATH, THE UNSEEN (distributed on behalf of Scorpion Releasing), and SLITHIS (in conjunction with Code Red)!

Honestly, there wasn't really a big/important Blu-ray release this week, so I had a tough time choosing my "pick of the week." I settled on Image Entertainment's new Blu of ARCHENEMY starring Joe Manganiello because it sounds interesting, and because Joe recently liked a tweet of mine when I promoted the film a week or two ago. (Thanks Joe - you rock!)

There are some titles I haven't yet mentioned (like the new Limited Edition "Titans of Cult" 4K Steelbook of PACIFIC RIM) - to peep them all out just continue scrolling down! You might find a few things you want but I'd personally suggest saving your money because much more worthwhile releases are on the horizon!

Code Red Respawns SLITHIS on Blu-ray Disc!

Blu-ray cover for Code Red's SLITHIS!
STEPHEN TRAXLER'S OBSCURE LOW-BUDGET CREATURE FEATURE MAKES ITS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE BLU-RAY FORMAT!

SLITHIS (aka SPAWN OF THE SLITHIS) came across my radar decades ago when, you guessed it, I found a copy at a local video store! While it didn't quite blow me away back then, I admit that I enjoyed it a helluva lot more when I saw it in 35mm with a crowd at a pre-Covid film festival! (Sigh... those were the days...)

After decades of being forgotten, SLITHIS debuted on DVD in 2010, and finally arrived on Blu-ray disc 2017, when it was released as a limited edition title with a really cool slipcover! But now, four years later, the amphibious creature born of radioactive sludge has returned to occupy a spot in your movie collection! If you're a fan of films featuring men in rubbery monster suits then you'll definitely want to pick this one up Vault Dwellers!

Synopsis: Finally, nature unleashes its revenge! From the pollution of our nuclear waste came the killer we cannot destroy. Our worst nightmares come to life with the terrifying, scaly monster – SLITHIS! First this nuclear mutant killed household pets near the canals of Venice, California. Now it preys on old couples and a homeless rotund man sleeping in the public men’s room! In the tradition of JAWS, two outcasts, a teacher and a Jamaican sea-hunter, will take on the horrific monster to stop the slaughter! This mud monster creature is something out of those 50’s classics we love!

Disc Specs:
Rated PG | Color | 86 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.78:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:

  • 2017 2K Scan of the Original Camera Negatives!
  • Theatrical Trailer
Code Red's Blu-ray re-release of SLITHIS should cost between $18 - $23 and is currently available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold! Get yourself a copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or RONIN FLIX!

Note: The film is Rated PG, but I distinctly remember there being some brief female nudity, particularly when the creature attacks a horny couple on a boat. I mention this to not only give you more incentive to own SLITHIS, but to also give those of you with kids a heads up!

Surf the Devouring Waves With Code Red's New Blu-ray of Lamberto Bava's MONSTER SHARK!

LAMBERTO BAVA'S CLASSIC CREATURE FEATURE FINALLY GETS THE LOVE IT DESERVES THANKS TO CODE RED!

For years Lamberto Bava's MONSTER SHARK was only available to us via Mystery Science Theater 3000's hysterical episode under its alternate title of DEVILFISH. But now Code Red has unleashed the original "Sharktopus" to Blu-ray with a new HD transfer and I couldn't be happier!

Synopsis: The ocean depths unleash a bloodthirsty monstrosity in this cult classic monster favorite from Italy! A marine biologist (Michael Sopkiw, BLASTFIGHTER), a dolphin trainer (Valentine Monnier, 2019: AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK), a research scientist, and a local sheriff (Gianni Garko, THE PSYCHIC) try to hunt down a large sea monster, a shark/octopus hybrid, that’s devouring swimmers and fishermen off a south Florida coast.

Also starring William Berger (SABATA) and featuring a score by Fabio Frizzi (THE BEYOND), this aquatic nightmare was directed by Lamberto Bava (DEMONS) and co-written by Luigi Cozzi (STAR CRASH) and Sergio Martino (HANDS OF STEEL) -- and now you can see it bigger and bloodier than ever in a new HD scan!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 94 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.66:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Extras:
  • Audio commentary with actor Michael Sopkiw.
  • Reversible cover art.
Code Red's MONSTER SHARK Blu-ray is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold, and should cost you between $20 - $24. If you're a fan of Italian Horror and/or creature features, you should definitely snag a copy of this flick from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Help Fund the Restoration, and Blu-ray Release, of William Fruet's BLUE MONKEY!

CODE RED DVD TURNS TO HORROR FANS TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR A FULL RESTORATION OF WILLIAM FRUET'S LONG OUT OF PRINT CREATURE FEATURE!

UPDATE (03/20/2018): Having been unable to reach Bill Olsen via e-mail or social media, I had to take matters into my own hands and get a refund directly from GoFundMe. For the details of what happened with this abruptly cancelled crowdfunding campaign, and learn how you can get your money back, CLICK HERE.

UPDATE (03/13/2018):
Apparently the crowdfunding campaign was canceled by Bill. I've reached out to him on social media to inquire about the status of the restoration, and to see if refunds are going to be issued to the people that donated! Stay tuned for updates!

Our bi-weekly WANTED ON BLU-RAY column has been doing quite well Vault Dwellers, and there are plenty of titles on the short list that I can't wait to shine a spotlight on. Imagine my utter surprise when one of those titles, BLUE MONKEY, suddenly popped up in my Facebook news feed just the other day.

It seems that Bill Olsen, the owner and operator of Code Red DVD, aims to bring this obscure creature feature to Blu-ray. But unlike his previous efforts in releasing Cult, Horror, and Exploitation classics, this time Bill is looking to crowdfund a high-def restoration of BLUE MONKEY! Just what is this mysterious "azure ape" film I keep mentioning?

Synopsis: A handyman working in an eccentric old woman's greenhouse comes into contact with a strange plant and ends up going to a nearby hospital after pricking his finger on the thornless flower. (We later learn it was more likely an insect bite.) Once he arrives in the ICU, he vomits up a rather large larvae, and begins to succumb to an illness that is liquefying his body from the inside out! Soon the disease is spreading throughout the hospital, leading to a government quarantine of the facility.

Trapped and desperately seeking a cure, the hospital staff fails to keep tabs on a group of precocious kids from the pediatric ward. The children find the insect that was birthed from the unfortunate handyman, and end up pouring a substance onto it (later found to be a growth hormone) that causes it to grow to gigantic proportions.

"HA! Your cans of RAID are now useless puny humans!"
Soon, the giant insect makes itself a nest in the utility tunnels beneath the hospital, and begins laying eggs. It's up to Dr. Rachel Carson (Gwynyth Walsh), Detective Jim Bishop (Steve Railsback), and an entomologist named Elliot Jacobs (Don Lake) to stop the creature, and find an antidote for the growing epidemic!

As for the film's misleading title, I've heard two reasons behind it: The first is that the movie was originally going to have a primate-like creature on the loose. The second is that the title (which was originally GREEN MONKEY, but changed because no one wanted people to equate this film with deadly AIDS-carrying monkeys) sort of refers to a creature that one of the kids in the film has nightmares about. Regardless, this movie has absolutely no monkeys in it at all!

The lack of colorful apes aside, if this Canuxploitation flick sounds enticing to you at all, then please consider pledging $30 ($25 for the Blu-ray + $5 for shipping) towards Bill Olsen's GoFundMe campaign for BLUE MONKEY's restoration! Let's work together to give this long-requested film a Blu-ray release worth owning Vault Dwellers! And if you're not too keen on donating any money, please share the crowdfunding page on Facebook and Twitter to help spread the word!

Spend ONE DARK NIGHT with Meg Tilly in Code Red's Newest Release!

CODE RED
GIVES TOM MCLOUGHLIN'S "ONE DARK NIGHT" A WHOLE LOT OF LOVIN' IN THEIR NEW SPECIAL EDITION BLU-RAY!

While I am familiar with Tom McLoughlin, I must admit that anything past FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI and his band The Sloths is unknown territory for yours truly. So I'm very curious about Tom's ONE DARK NIGHT, especially since Code Red put so much effort into this release! Along with a new transfer and reversible cover art, they packed this Special Edition with tons of extras!

Synopsis: A world famous psychic is found dead along with several victims of his bizarre experiments. One the same day his body is interred in a mausoleum, high-schooler Julie Wells (Meg Tilly, PYSCHO II, THE BIG CHILL, BODY SNATCHERS) agrees to spend the night there all alone  as part of a hazing to join the clique, "The Sisters" (Robin Evans, E.G. Daily, Leslie Speights). Later that night, the sisters secretly return to torment Julie in an attempt to scare her out of her mind. But the girls are not alone.

The psychic s experiments continue even after death - on his own body and on the dozen resident corpses in various stages of decay. Soon they're exhumed and looking for fresh bodies! ONE DARK NIGHT haunts audiences' psyches with its claustrophobic setting, moody cinematography, foreboding score and ultra-realistic makeup effects. Tom McLoughlin (DATE WITH AN ANGEL, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES) directed this terrifying chiller which co-stars the great Adam West (Batman, Family Guy).

BLU-RAYS

But when her rowdy girlfriends Ginger and Ducky show up unannounced and ready to party, Uncle Carl's serene beach retreat turns into a loud, rip-roaring celebration that would make even a Roman orgy pale by comparison.

BLACK CANDLES (1982)
It's a stew of satanic sex when Carol and her boyfriend Paul travel to England after the unexpected death of her brother. Once there she finds out her sister-in-law is involved in a secret cult, and Paul might be getting pulled into their lusty web of diabolical destruction. Also known as "Hot Fantasies," this cult film from Euro horror icon Jose Ramon Larraz (VAMPYRES, SYMPTOMS, THE HOUSE THAT VANISHED) will seduce you in luscious HD with all of its shocking, goat-abusing thrills intact!

BLACK GESTAPO (1974)
General Ahmed (ROD PERRY, TV's S.W.A.T) has started an inner-city People's Army to try and relieve the misery of the citizens of Watts. When the locals are put under increasing pressure by Mafia thugs, Ahmed's second-in-command Colonel Kojah (CHARLIE ROBINSON, TV's Night Court, SUGAR HILL) asks for permission to start a protection squad to take more direct action. Ahmed fears this protection squad will just turn into a vigilante mob, and his prediction soon proves correct. Will Ahmed be able to wrest control back from the power-mad Kojah, or will he be the mob's next victim? Throw away all those PD bootlegs, watch this classic from the original camera negatives in HD!

BLOODTHIRSTY BUTCHERS (1970)
Legendary bargain-basement filmmaker Andy Milligan tries (and fails) yet again to pull off a period horror piece, this time applying his trademark touch to the legend of Sweeney Todd. Viewers are thus presented with Victorian England, Milligan style -- replete with thrift shop costumes! As in the oft-told tale, the infamous "Demon Barber of Fleet Street" slashes his customers into cutlets, providing a local baker with yummy filling for his popular meat pies. When their scheme is undone by the lady friend of a recent victim, they eventually turn on each other.

DAY OF THE ANIMALS (1977)
Scientists warn that the depletion of the earth's ozone layer is reaching critical levels, particularly in higher altitudes. How critical? Enough to unleash the vengeful wrath of the entire animal kingdom! No human is safe, particularly a group of nature-loving hikers made up of Leslie Nielsen (THE NAKED GUN, AIRPLANE), Richard Jaeckel (GRIZZLY), Jon Cedar (THE MANITOU), Lynda Day George, PIECES), and their guide (Christopher George, GRIZZLY, MORTUARY). Together, they are constantly menaced by every conceivable mountain-dwelling creature: Dogs, rats, snakes, hawks, owls, mountain lions and bears are out to send a clear message about chlorofluorocarbon abuse.

DEVIL TIMES FIVE (1974)
Five children crawl from the wreckage of a deadly van accident in a snowy canyon. The juvenile survivors (including teen heartthrob Leif Garrett) seek shelter at a secluded mountaintop winter home occupied by a rich businessman (Gene Evans) and his friends (including Sorrell Booke, Boss Hogg from TV's Dukes Of Hazzard and Shelly Morrison of Will & Grace). Soon, strange mishaps occur and the group is stranded without electricity and telephones. One by one, the adults begin to fell prey to a series of shocking and violent deaths!

THE FOREST (1980)
Two couples plan a trip into the forest. But they didn't count on a killer on the loose with a taste for human flesh! Haunted by the ghosts of his children, the killer is eventually double-crossed as the ghosts of his children come to the aid of the campers in this unique entry into the killer-in-the-woods genre. From 70's exploitation director Don Jones (LETHAL PURSUIT, SCHOOLGIRLS IN CHAINS), featuring cult star Gary Kent (SATAN'S SADISTS, THRILL KILLERS), Stafford Morgan (LEGEND OF BIGFOOT) and Corky Pigeon (TV'S Silver Spoons). Now see this slasher classic from a brand new 2k scan!

Two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Freddie Francis (Glory, The Elephant Man) steps into the director's chair to tell the bizarre tale of Girly a killer black comedy unlike any other! In a large mansion outside of London, an eccentric family lurks: Girly, a flirtatious schoolgirl with eyes of fire; Sonny, her mischievous brother; Nanny, the house's caretaker; and Mumsy, the family matriarch. This quite unusual family is far more dangerous than you can imagine! Any man who enters the house never comes out, as they are sucked into a blood-curdling game with children! Before AMERICAN PIE, there was HOT MOVES! When four horny Venice Beach teenagers, led by Barry (Michael Zorek, PRIVATE SCHOOL), make a pact to lose their virginity by the end of Summer, hilarity and madcap humor ensue, as everything they do goes horribly wrong in their quest to go all the way! Mike escapes from prison and goes after the bad guys who framed him, and to also settle the score against the prison gaurd (Nello Pazzafini) who was responsible for his brother's death. It's hot times in Yumatown tonight! The wild west will never be the same as muscles vs. pistols in this action-packed spaghetti western!

LORD SHANGO (1974)
In this atmospheric blaxploitation classic, a wrong Christian mother turns away from her faith to a more ancient religion and summons a tribal priest to avenge her teenage daughter. Rarely seen since its original release, this striking blend of folklore, African traditions, and supernatural menace stars cult icon Marlene Clark (NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, GANJA AND HESS, ENTER THE DRAGON), and now comes to Blu-ray for the very first time!

THE MAN WITH TWO HEADS (1974)
Dr. William Jekyll (Denis de Marne) is a brilliant scientist whose revolutionary theories on the nature of human evil have earned him derision from the more conservative corners of his profession. The devoted doctor has developed a serum that isolates and identifies the part of the brain that produces violent behavior, and is working on another chemical that will block all antisocial desires, effectively curing evil once and for all. Of course, something goes wrong, and the crusading doctor is transformed into Mr. Blood, a sadistic, lustful creature with grey-green skin and ferocious eyebrows. Jekyll remembers nothing after recovering from his fits of violence, but his sister, fiancee, and the students he teaches all notice that his behavior is becoming very strange. The doctor's evil alter ego begins surfacing uncontrollably and at random, threatening the safety and sanity or his loved ones, as well as Jekyll himself.

MARK OF THE WITCH (1970)
A college co-ed attends a class on the occult and ends up possessed by a 17th-century witch who seduces the girl’s lover (who is also teaching the course). She then goes on a murderous rampage to get revenge on the descendant of the man who persecuted her in this taut 70’s horror movie.

MOONSHINE COUNTY EXPRESS (1976)
Hollywood legend John Saxon (ENTER THE DRAGON, HANDS OF STEEL, BLOOD BEACH) stars in a drive-in classic! Villainous racketeer Starkey (William Conrad, Jake And The Fat Man) has bumped off likable moonshiner Pap Hammer. Now, Starkey must do away with Hammer’s beautiful daughters Dot (Susan Howard, Dallas), Betty (Claudia Jennings, DEATHSPORT, TRUCK STOP WOMEN, GATOR BAIT), and Sissy (Maureen McCormick, The Brady Bunch, TEXAS DETOUR, SKATETOWN U.S.A.). The girls receive unexpected help from Starkey’s flunky, J. B. Johnson (Saxon), who turns out to be more than capable of helping them fight back.

MY TUTOR (1983)
Bobby Chrystal and his friends Billy and Jack are three rambunctious high school seniors looking for love. It seems everything leaves them, well, unfulfilled. Jack is chased out of a whorehouse by a vicious dominatrix, Billy is almost beaten to a pulp after hitting on some female mud wrestlers, and Bobby ends up making his getaway when the girl he's making out with is paid a surprise visit by her motorcycle gang boyfriend. All that cruising leaves little time to study, and Bobby flunks French. His hopes of attending Yale seem lost until shapely, blonde beauty Terry Green is hired to teach him the language of love. Before you know it, verbs turn into urges, and she ends up teaching him more than how to structure a sentence.

THE POM POM GIRLS (1976)
Forget your troubles and swing into action with the beautiful pom pom girls in this fast-paced story about high school seniors enjoying a final fling before graduation. The carefree and scandalous antis of these kids indulging themselves before they enter adulthood is pure spontaneous fun. Will the handsome womanizer Jesse win over radiant pom pom girl Laurie? Will the kids' crazy antics get them in trouble? Will the delectable pom pom girls get their kicks? It's a classic youth-gone-wild pleasure-fest.

SAVAGE ATTRACTION (1983)
Based on a shocking true story! In 1980s Australia, Young runaway Christine (Kerry Mack) is dragged into a whirlpool of psychological terror when she marries a coworker, Walter (Ralph Schicha), who turns out to be a modern-day Nazi. Pregnant and facing life-threatening complications, she's caught up in a wave of crime and deception when she accompanies him to Germany and becomes a hostage in a nightmare from which there may be no escape.

TORTURE DUNGEON (1971)
Cult filmmaker Andy Milligan is best known for extreme, unconvincing gore and the odd habit of making British-set costume dramas on location. This one is a gruesome re-working of TOWER OF LONDON with Jeremy Brooks as the mad Duke of Norwich, who murders and tortures his competitors to the English Throne. The acting is typical of Mulligan's films, which is to say horrid, and the bloody highlights include a pitchfork impalement and rattlesnake torture. Advertisements promised that the film was shot in "dripping blood color," but the tacky school-play costumes and sets do not benefit from this alleged process. You can even see the water tower in the background!

DVDS

ATOR (1982)
Miles O'Keefe stars as Ator in the first of four films featuring the muscle-bound Ator character! In his first adventure, Ator, son of Thorn, is destined to put an end to the dynasty of the Spider! Together, they conquer danger after danger as they encounter many supernatural villains including witches, dead warriors, and even Ator's own shadows! Their final showdown with the High Priest of the Spider and finally the Spider itself will leave you breathless!

BUTCHER, BAKER, NIGHTMARE MAKER (1982)
The movie tells of bigoted police detective (Bo Svenson, WALKING TALL PART 2) Joe Carlson, whose homophobia leads him to try to frame high school basketball player Billy Lynch (Jimmy McNichol, ESCAPE FROM EL DIABLO) for the murder of a television repairman when he becomes convinced that the killing was the result of a homosexual love triangle. Unbeknownst to the detective, Billy's aunt Cheryl (Susan Tyrrell, FAT CITY) is the real killer; having harbored incestuous fantasies towards Billy for years, his impending graduation has caused long dormant homicidal urges to resurface. Joe's continued plaguing of Billy causes Cheryl to become progressively more unstable, ultimately jeopardizing the lives of everyone around her. Julia Duffy (TV'S NEWHART), and Bill Paxton (FUTURE SHOCK) co-stars. directed by TV great William Asher.

SATAN'S SLAVE (1976)
A young girl (Candace Glendenning, TOWER OF EVIL, FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW) moves in with her uncle Alexander (Michael Gough, BATMAN, BERSERK, KONGA) after her parents' car mysteriously explodes. After being taken in by her cousins, she soon begins suffering strange visions. But what she doesn't know is that her planned role in the house is more sinister than she could have expected. Starring horror icon Michael Gough and Martin Potter (GOODBYE GEMINI) and directed by cult director Norman J. Warren (TERROR, INSEMINOID), Scorpion Releasing proudly presents the complete uncut version for the first time anywhere in the world in its original scope ratio!
