If You've Got a Taste for Terror... Get CARRIE on 4K UHD on December 13th!

Cover art for Scream Factory's 3-Disc Collector's Edition 4K UHD of CARRIE!
SCREAM FACTORY BRINGS BRIAN DE PALMA'S FANTASTIC ADAPTION OF THE STEPHEN KING NOVEL TO 4K, IN BOTH STANDARD AND STEELBOOK EDITIONS!

Though there's been a sequel, a made-for-TV remake, and a big budget Hollywood reboot, the original 1976 CARRIE is still clearly the best version of the Stephen King tale of a tortured teenage girl that unleashes her telekinetic powers upon those that wronged her. And now CARRIE is the latest Scream Factory double-dip, featuring a new 4k transfer, one new audio commentary, a newspaper ad gallery, plus the plethora of extras from the previous Blu-ray release! If you haven't yet added this movie to your collection, now is the time to do it Vault Dwellers! And if you already do have CARRIE, this seems like a worthy upgrade!

Synopsis: Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel, this "absolutely spellbinding horror movie" (Roger Ebert) stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in Oscar-nominated* performances. This ultimate revenge fantasy has become one of the all-time great horror classics!

At the center of the terror is Carrie (Spacek), a high school loner with no confidence, no friends ... and no idea about the extent of her secret powers of telekinesis. But when her psychotic mother and sadistic classmates finally go too far, the once-shy teen becomes an unrestrained, vengeance-seeking powerhouse who, with the help of her "special gift," causes all hell to break loose in a famed cinematic frenzy of blood, fire and brimstone! This classic also stars John Travolta (BLOW OUT), Amy Irving (THE FURY), William Katt (HOUSE), and P.J. Soles (HALLOWEEN).

While I haven't been a big fan of Scream Factory's somewhat recent decision to focus on re-releasing titles in new 4K editions, I must admit that the fact that they are using the original theatrical artwork, and adding a few additional bonus features, kind of sweetens the pot. The 3-disc standard Collector's Edition 4K UHD of CARRIE arrives on Tuesday, December 13th and should cost between $28 - $36! You can pre-order it now from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

There is also a Limited Edition Steelbook arriving the same day, which will cost somewhere between $30 - $39! That release is also available to order now from AMAZON, DIABOLIK DVD, and SHOUT! FACTORY. (Note: Ordering either the standard or steelbook editions directly from Scream/Shout! will net you a poster!) However, if you're a hardcore CARRIE fan, then you may want to indulge in one of Shout!/Scream Factory's exclusive bundles:
  • Bundle #1 contains the standard 4K release, a poster featuring the original theatrical artwork, and a set of cool enamel pins from Gutter Garbs! ORDER NOW for $99.95!
  • The second bundle contains the 4K Steelbook, a poster featuring the steelbook's new artwork, and a set of enamel pins! ORDER NOW for $99.99!

Scream Factory Wants to Hire You for the GRAVEYARD SHIFT in Late July!

Cover art for Scream Factory's upcoming Blu-ray release of STEPHEN KING's GRAVEYARD SHIFT!
STEPHEN KING'S "GRAVEYARD SHIFT" GETS ITS NORTH AMERICAN BLU-RAY DEBUT ON JULY 28TH!

Last September I mentioned GRAVEYARD SHIFT in an entry into my WANTED ON BLU-RAY column. Seeing as how Scream Factory was releasing a lot of Paramount titles, I made an educated guess that this oft-forgotten 90s Horror gem would end up in their catalog in the not too distant future.

And now, eght months later, I stand before you all with a big grin on my face because I WAS RIGHT! So get excited Vault Dwellers because in just over two months, we'll all get to enjoy this (very loose) adaptation of King's short story from his Night Shift anthology!

Synopsis: Workers clock in for their shift ... and clock out for good! From master storyteller Stephen King (Pet Sematary) comes his most terror-filled tale yet ...

When an abandoned textile mill is reopened, several employees meet mysterious deaths. The link between the killings is the hour: all occurred between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. – the GRAVEYARD SHIFT. The sadistic mill foreman has chosen a group to clean up the mill's rat-infested basement. But what the workers find is a subterranean maze of tunnels leading to the cemetery – and an unimaginable horror that comes alive in the dead of night ...

Return to The Overlook Hotel in Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP!

Cover art for the 4K UHD release of Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP.
THE FILM ADAPTATION OF STEPHEN KING'S FOLLOWUP TO "THE SHINING" ARRIVES ON DVD, BLU-RAY, AND 4K ULTRA HD DISC ON FEBRUARY 4TH!

Last year I barely went to see anything in theaters (I averaged less than one trip to the closest cineplex each month), though there were plenty of movies I wanted to see, such as Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP. Adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name (which I just finished reading last month), this film pits grown-up Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) against a supernatural foe called "Rose the Hat," a vampiric antagonist that targets children that have "the shining!" I've heard mixed reviews about this film, but I'm eager to finally watch it when it arrives in stores next Tuesday!

Synopsis: Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor - TRAINSPOTTING, the STAR WARS PREQUEL TRILOGY) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran - I CAN I WILL I DID), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the "shine." Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson - THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE series) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra's innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

THE STAND TV Mini-Series Arrives on Blu-ray on September 24th!

Blu-ray cover for Paramount's THE STAND Mini-Series!
OWN THE SIX-HOUR TV MINI-SERIES OF STEPHEN KING'S EPIC TALE OF GOOD VS. EVIL, NOW FULLY RESTORED IN HIGH-DEFINITION!

Seeing as how today is Stephen King's 72nd birthday, I felt it was worth mentioning this upcoming release from Paramount Pictures! I remember watching THE STAND when I was a kid - it was all everyone was talking about. My parents were glued to the TV. I was glued to the TV. And shortly after the final chapter aired, I was flipping the pages of King's novel. And now, twenty-five years later, the mini-series is getting a new lease on life for an entirely new generation of King fans!

Synopsis: In Stephen King's epic vision of an apocalyptic future, the few survivors of a plague-ravaged world must choose sides in the ultimate battle of good vs. evil that will decide the fate of humanity. As the followers of demonic Randall Flagg plot to rebuild the world in his dark image, a courageous foursome embarks on a heroic mission against Flagg and his minions. Fighting overwhelming odds, they will risk more than their lives as they take one desperate last stand against evil.

Adapted by Stephen King from his best-selling, celebrated novel, the all-star cast features Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan, Laura San Giacomo, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Miguel Ferrer, Corin Nemec, Matt Frewer, Adam Storke, Ray Walston and Rob Lowe.

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 359 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Audio - English Dolby Digital 2.0

Extras:
  • The Making of Stephen King's The Stand
  • Audio commentary featuring Author/Screenwriter Stephen King, director Mick Garris, editor Patrick McMahon, and actors Rob Lowe, Ruby Dee, Miguel Ferrer and Jamie Sheridan.
Though the few extras included were ported over from previous DVD releases, the restoration of the mini-series is worth the $22 - $32 pricetag alone. I've seen screencaps comparing the standard DVD release and the new HD restoration, and it's like night and day! Though the film looks colder (i.e. bluer) than it used to, the clarity is pretty remarkable. However, I should note that the back of the Blu-ray cover mentions that this version of THE STAND contains "enhanced effects," so that may be an issue for purists. Stephen King's THE STAND will be available on Tuesday, September 24th - order your copy today from AMAZON, BULL MOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

WANTED ON BLU-RAY: GRAVEYARD SHIFT (1990)

WANTED ON BLU-RAY - Stephen King's Graveyard Shift (1990)!
WANTED ON BLU-RAY: GRAVEYARD SHIFT (1990)

Rated R | Color | 89 minutes

UPDATE (08/20/2025): The Scream Factory release of GRAVEYARD SHIFT is now OOP. Luckily, Kino Lorber Studio Classics picked up the rights and has released this film on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD!

When I was growing up in my hometown of Scranton, PA between the late 80s / early 90s, there was an awesome mom & pop video store minutes away from the house called Electric City Video. With a cool sign (featuring neon pink lettering), its pleasant "video store smell" (a unique scent that can never be replicated), and impressive collection of Horror and Sci-Fi films on VHS. Sigh... it truly was heaven.

I always made sure to peruse the covers for the films that I wasn't allowed to watch, and how could I not? VHS covers were a definite art form, and beautifully designed to entice you to rent a movie. There were so many memorable VHS covers, but one that frequently caught my eye was Stephen King's GRAVEYARD SHIFT. The cyclopean skull with the bloody hardhat always drew me in.

I wouldn't actually get to see GRAVEYARD SHIFT until I was a teenager, when my uncle (a huge King fan that has since passed away) allowed me to borrow his VHS copy. While it didn't quite catch on with me then, I have since become a fan of this Stephen King adaptation, which is loosely based upon his short story of the same name. (It's one of the many tales contained in Night Shift!) With the upcoming theatrical release of DOCTOR SLEEP in November, plus the impending Blu-ray releases of THE SHINING (on 4K UHD), THE STAND (restored!), and SILVER BULLET (Collector's Edition!), I figure it's only a matter of time before GRAVEYARD SHIFT gets a physical media upgrade!

Synopsis: A drifter named John Hall (David Andrews - CHERRY 2000, FIGHT CLUB) gets hired at a rat-infested textile mill in Maine, that is run by an unhinged foreman named Warwick (Stephen Macht - THE MONSTER SQUAD, NIGHTWING). When asked to clean out the basement to make room for more office space, Hall and various other employees venture into the depths of the mill with Warwick, only to discover that rats aren't the only thing nesting beneath the ancient structure!

Stephen Macht's "Warwick" battles a giant bat-rat monster in Stephen King's GRAVEYARD SHIFT!
I'm starting to think Stephen Macht has an axe to grind against bats.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT also stars Andrew Divoff (WISHMASTER), Kelly Wolf (Tales From the Darkside), Brad Dourif (the voice of Chucky in the CHILD'S PLAY series), and Vic Polizos (C.H.U.D., NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, HARLEM NIGHTS), and features a team of special effects artists that are still actively working in Hollywood to this day! As far as book-to-film adaptions go, GRAVEYARD SHIFT is fairly accurate but makes some major changes in its third act, most likely due to budget constraints.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT is sole directorial effort of Ralph Singleton, who has spent most of his career producing films, including both PET SEMATARY movies and a pair of Eddie Murphy classics. His movie is a cool creature feature with a great cast, that totally embraces its own weirdness and absurdity. (In particular, that end credits "theme song" is SO bizarre!) By now, it surely has a large enough cult following to warrant an HD overhaul!

Availability: GRAVEYARD SHIFT is readily available on DVD and digital and super cheap to boot!

Current Rights Holder: This is an easy one for a change Vault Dwellers - Paramount owns the rights to GRAVEYARD SHIFT! And seeing as how Scream Factory has been dipping into the Paramount vaults as of late, I would not be shocked if they gave this movie its big Blu-ray debut!

Brad Dourif as "The Exterminator" in Stephen King's GRAVEYARD SHIFT!
"He's probably right you know."

Blu-ray Wishlist:
  • New 4K restoration from an original 35mm film print! (But I'd settle for 2K!)
  • Multiple cuts of the film: Theatrical, Director's Cut, & Network TV Edit.
  • Audio commentary with Director Ralph S. Singleton!
  • Deleted & Extended scenes (If no other cuts of the film are included.)
  • Interview with voice actor Frank Welker (who provided sounds for the film's mon-star).
  • Interviews with the cast and special effects crew!
  • Trailers
  • Poster & Stills Gallery
GRAVEYARD SHIFT's 30th Anniversary is next October, and I can't think of a better birthday gift for the film, than a nice Collector's Edition release! The movie pretty much broke even during its initial theatrical run, but I'm certain it quietly found an audience on VHS and late night cable TV since then. And hopefully somebody out there (cough, Scream Factory, cough) can find it in their heart to finally bring this oft-overlooked Stephen King fright flick to Blu-ray disc!

Get Cat Scratch Fever With Scream Factory's New Blu-ray of Stephen King's SLEEPWALKERS!

STEPHEN KING'S TALE OF VAMPIRIC SHAPE-SHIFTERS INEXPLICABLY GETS A COLLECTOR'S EDITION RELEASE FROM SCREAM FACTORY!

All I can think when I stare at the cover for SLEEPWALKERS is "this movie got a Collector's Edition Blu-ray and GRAVEYARD SHIFT still languishes in DVD Hell?!" I first saw this movie when it premiered on VHS in 1996, and I recall not being all that impressed with it, so naturally I was kind of surprised that it got so much TLC from Scream Factory. But then again, I haven't seen SLEEPWALKERS in over twenty years so maybe I missed out on what makes this particular movie worthy of a Collector's Edition? I'll guess I'll find out sometime in the near future!

Synopsis: Brian Krause (Charmed) and Alice Krige (GHOST STORY) star in this terrifying tale of modern-day vampires who move from small town to small town to prey on virtuous young women. Imperceptibly inhuman to everyone except for felines, these vicious shape-shifters have their eyes on a new victim: Mädchen Amick (Twin Peaks) is Tanya, the sexually curious virgin who falls for Charles, the new boy in school (Krause).

Mutating at will from golden boy to savage monster, Charles stalks Tanya to feed his seductive mother. As the tension mounts (and the casualties pile up), the town's tabbies gather for a final, chilling showdown with the monsters in their midst – and we all know it's not nice to hurt people's felines.

Learn Who Made Who With Vestron Collector's Series' New Blu-ray of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!

LONG OUT OF PRINT, STEPHEN KING'S SOLO DIRECTORIAL EFFORT FINALLY MAKES ITS WAY TO BLU-RAY IN THIS DELUXE VESTRON RELEASE!

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE may not be the greatest thing to bear Stephen King's name, but the film does have two things going for it: It's the ONLY movie ever directed by King (who was on a steady diet of cocaine at the time) and the only film (to my knowledge) that has an all AC/DC soundtrack. For years, this bad boy was only available on VHS or DVD, but Stephen King's ridiculous tale of mankind's machines retaliating against their creators is finally getting the love it deserves!

Synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate battle of man vs. bloodthirsty machine in this terrifying Stephen King classic! For three horrifying days, the Earth passes through the tail of a mysterious comet. The skies glow an eerie green as humanity waits to see what the fallout will be. But what they imagine is nothing like the nightmare the find - the comet's magnetic fields cause all the machines on Earth to suddenly come to life and terrorize their human creators in a horrific killing spree. Now, it's up to a small group of people trapped in a desolate truck stop to defeat the killer machines - or be killed by them!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 98 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & 2.0

  • Behind-the-Scenes Footage

  • TV Spots
Though Stephen King and Emilio Estevez are noticeably absent from the special features, that is still an impressive number of new extras for this release! MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE is now available wherever Blu-ray discs are sold and currently seems to go for $35 - $40! (Ouch! That is super expensive - unless you've got money to burn, you may want to hold off on buying this one for a while Vault Dwellers!) Order your copy now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, or DIABOLIK DVD!

Look For Scream Factory's Definitive Collector's Edition of CREEPSHOW on October 23rd!

ONE OF THE GREATEST HORROR ANTHOLOGIES OF ALL TIME GETS GETS AN IMPRESSIVE BLU-RAY RELEASE!

When I heard the news of this release my first reaction was bittersweet Vault Dwellers, because all I could think was "Man, Jimmy Harris would've went wild for this!" My pal, the late Doc Terror, adored CREEPSHOW - it was his favorite Horror movie. So I for one will be picking up this new Scream Factory Blu-ray, not just because I enjoy the movie on its own merits, but also because I want to feel some sort of connection to a good friend that was taken from us all far too soon.

Let's take a closer look at this beast of a Blu-ray, shall we?

Synopsis: Five creepy tales are strung together by a framing story involving a young boy being punished by his father for reading the gruesome, titular comic book. "Father's Day" tells the tale of a family patriarch exacting beyond-the-grave revenge on the daughter who murdered him. In "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill," a Maine hayseed is overtaken by a meteor-based plant growth. A cuckolded husband exacts watery revenge on his cheating wife and her lover in "Something to Tide You Over." A hairy beast in a box is used for nefarious purposes at a university in "The Crate." Finally, in "They're Creeping Up on You," a wealthy, arrogant New Yorker with a fear of germs has a disturbing run-in with cockroaches during a blackout.

Bring IT Home on DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K UHD on January 9th!

ON JANUARY 9TH, ADD THE SURPRISE HORROR HIT OF 2017 TO YOUR COLLECTION!

2017 was a great year for the Horror genre, especially when the new adaptation of Stephen King's IT became the highest grossing R-Rated fright flick of all time! With its great cast of child actors, and strong advertising campaign, IT was destined to do well. But no one expected this!

And if you loved the movie on the big screen, get excited because you can finally add this to your Stephen King film collection! (Right in between the original "IT" TV mini-series and MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!)

Synopsis: New Line Cinema's horror thriller IT, directed by Andrés Muschietti (MAMA), is based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades. When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

TARZAN REVISITED (2017)

Synopsis: After his first appearance in 1912 in an American pulp magazine, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ literary character Tarzan became one of the most significant pop culture characters of the 20th century, and the first quintessential superhero. Published in over 20 novels and translated into more than 50 languages, the story of a feral boy raised by great apes was an immediate sensation, spawning radio shows, newspaper comic strips, graphic novels, multiple TV series and countless movies.

Though the vine-swinging Tarzan proved hugely popular among audiences, he was often met with much controversy and criticism. Despite the many heated debates surrounding Tarzan, the character nonetheless became a versatile vehicle for highlighting important topics including animal cruelty, colonialism, slavery and the current morals of society. Even Tarzan's primitivist "return to nature" philosophy remains relevant today, further illustrating why this legendary figure has endured generations of cultural change and continues to be such a compelling and timeless hero.

From past to present, TARZAN: REVISITED explores the character's extraordinary evolution, giving a detailed overview of how he was first created, behind-the-scenes stories surrounding his innumerable media incarnations, and a fascinating insight into his longevity and legacy in pop culture.

FANTASTIC PLANET (1973)

Synopsis: Rene Laloux's mesmerising sci-fi animated feature won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and is a landmark of European animation. Set in a distant world, the FANTASTIC PLANET, where tiny humans, or Oms, are kept as pets by large alien creatures, the Draags, the film travels through a strange and beautiful world. Soon, one Om absconds with a Draag knowledge device, using the tool to foment a wild Om uprising against his captors.

Inspired by the Russsian invasion of Czechoslovakia in the late '60s, Laloux's breathtaking vision immediately drew comparisons to Swift's Gulliver's Travels and PLANET OF THE APES. Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki (PRINCESS MONONOKE, SPIRITED AWAY) due to its political and social concerns, epic imagination and groundbreaking animation techniques.

Celebrate He Who Walks Behind the Rows With Arrow Video's Special Edition Blu-ray of CHILDREN OF THE CORN!

ON OCTOBER 3RD, ARROW VIDEO GIVES "CHILDREN OF THE CORN" A MUST HAVE SPECIAL EDITION RELEASE!

CHILDREN OF THE CORN has always been one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations, and it still holds up relatively well over three decades later. (The nine followup films... haven't fared as well.) So naturally I'm pretty stoked for this Arrow release, which boasts a ton of extras, and an all new 2K transfer of the film!

Synopsis: From the mind of celebrated horror author Stephen King, the man behind such classic terror tales as The Shining, Carrie and It, comes one of his most chilling offerings yet: CHILDREN OF THE CORN.

A young couple on a road trip find themselves lost in the back roads of rural Nebraska, eventually winding up in the seemingly abandoned town of Gatlin. But the town is far from empty as the pair soon discover that it's inhabited by a twisted cult of murderous children thirsty for another blood sacrifice...

Adapted from King s eponymous short story first published in 1977 and starring Linda Hamilton (THE TERMINATOR) and Peter Horton (Thirtysomething), CHILDREN OF THE CORN has gone on to spawn one of the most enduring horror franchises of all time.

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 92 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & DTS-HD Master Audio Mono

Extras:
  • Brand new 2K restoration from the original negative!
  • Brand new audio commentary with John Sullivan of childrenofthecornmovie.com and horror journalist Justin Beahm!
  • Audio commentary with director Fritz Kiersch, producer Terrence Kirby, and actors John Franklin and Courtney Gains!

  • It Was the Eighties! – An interview with actress Linda Hamilton!
  • Return to Gatlin – A brand new featurette revisiting the film’s original Iowa shooting locations!
  • Stephen King on a Shoestring – An interview with producer Donald Borchers.
