Umbrella Entertainment's August 2018 Releases!

After two really solid months of genre releases from Umbrella Entertainment, it seems as though they've reigned themselves in at the close of the Summer! While there are multiple new titles from this fantastic company, only two of them really fit into the Vault's wheelhouse this.

First up is the looooooooong-awaited Blu-ray of RAZORBACK, which has been released as part of Umbrella's Beyond Genres label. Boasting a new 4K transfer, a second cut of the film, and loads of extra features, this one is a definite must-own! Also worth mentioning is Umbrella's new DVD release of Jack Arnold's classic atom-age creature feature, TARANTULA, which features a cameo by a very young Clint Eastwood as a fighter pilot!

For further details on these two new Umbrella titles (and to see what else they've released this month) please continue reading Vault Dwellers!

* Umbrella's September slate is looking mighty fine! Here's what's coming on 09/05: CARGO, HEATHERS, THE IMMORTAL WARS, SPIRIT OF THE AIR - GREMLINS OF THE CLOUDS, and TO CATCH A KILLER!

* Umbrella delivers thrills new and old on October 3rd (just in time for Halloween!) with the highly-anticipated release of the long out of print Ozploitation classic, NEXT OF KIN, QUIJA HOUSE, and Region Free Blu-rays of HELLRAISER, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, and HELLRAISER III!

Synopsis: Somewhere deep in the Australian outback there's a marauding, indestructible creature that can rip a man in half and destroy a homestead in seconds.

This giant freak of nature is nine hundred pounds of tusk and muscle - and it is hell bent on terrorizing the small isolated community of "Gamulla" - a town as violent and primitive as the beast that threatens it.

The astonishing feature film debut of music video maestro Russell Mulcahy (HIGHLANDER), RAZORBACK is a ferociously entertaining, adrenaline-pumping thriller that proudly counts Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino among its self-confessed fans!

Presented in a new high definition transfer, boasting stunning cinematography from Oscar winner Dean Semler (DANCES WITH WOLVES), a taut script by horror veteran Everett DeRoche (PATRICK), atmospheric music by Iva Davies (Icehouse) and a fearsome creature from effects master Bob McCarron (TURKEY SHOOT, THE ROAD WARRIOR, THE MATRIX), RAZORBACK is an Ozploitation classic, bloodcurdling to the last squeal.

Synopsis: A Jack Arnold (IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) atomic monster classic, TARANTULA is a cult extravaganza, featuring an inspired 1950s style of wild and imaginative science fiction horror.

Ambitious Professor Gerald Deemer (Leo G. Carroll - NORTH BY NORTHWEST) has developed an astonishing new project: A special growth formula! Testing the formula on his innocent lab tarantula in Arizona he expects nothing more than it to double in size. But when it somehow escapes into the desert , it grows to gargantuan size and threatens to destroy everything and everyone in its path.

Also featuring John Agar (STAR IN THE DUST, THE MOLE PEOPLE) and Mara Corday (MAN WITHOUT A STAR) TARANTULA is a cracking example of 50s sci-fi horror paranoia in the glorious tradition of THE BLOB and THEM!

Scream Factory Brings Three New IFC Midnight Titles to Blu-ray on August 7th!

Scream Factory's IFC releases are hit and miss for me, but this latest batch actually looks quite promising. LOWLIFE is the feature film debut of director Ryan Prows and follows a motley group of people caught up in an organ-harvesting scheme, PYEWACKET tells the tale of a girl that accidentally places a curse on her mother, and WILDLING is a coming-of-age story with a mythological twist. Learn more about this new releases below, and get your credit cards ready Vault Dwellers!

LOWLIFE (2017)

Synopsis: What happens when you throw together one fallen Mexican wrestler with serious rage issues, one just-out-of-prison ex-con with a regrettable face tattoo, and one recovering junkie motel owner in search of a kidney? That's the premise of the berserk, blood-spattered, and wickedly entertaining feature debut from Ryan Prows.

Set amidst the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, LOWLIFE zigzags back and forth in time as it charts how fate — and a ruthless crime boss — connects three down-and-out reprobates mixed up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes from bad to worse to off-the-rails insane. Careening from savagely funny to just plain savage to unexpectedly heartfelt, this audacious thriller serves up nonstop adrenaline alongside hard-hitting commentary about the state of contemporary America.

I was sold on this film as soon as I saw this guy.

Synopsis: When you're dealing with demons, be careful what you wish for. In this ultra-unsettling occult nightmare, teenage Leah (Nicole Muñoz, Once Upon A Time) finds solace from the recent death of her father — and from her strained relationship with her mother (Laurie Holden, The Walking Dead) — by dabbling in the dark arts.

It all seems like harmless fun at first ... until an argument leads Leah to do the unthinkable: put a death curse on her mother. Leah immediately regrets her decision, but it may be too late: An evil presence known as Pyewacket has risen — and threatens to destroy both mother and daughter.

BACKCOUNTRY director Adam MacDonald creates hair-raising tension and a complex mother-daughter dynamic in this frightening fable about our darkest desires come to life.

WILDING (2018)

Synopsis: A teenage girl's coming-of-age arrives with a terrifying twist in this spellbinding take on the werewolf legend. Since birth, Anna (Bel Powley) has been raised in isolation by a man she knows only as Daddy (Brad Dourif - CHILD'S PLAY franchise, Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN and HALLOWEEN 2). He has done everything possible to conceal the truth about her origins from her.

But when the teenage Anna is suddenly thrust into the real world under the protection of no-nonsense police officer Ellen (Liv Tyler - THE STRANGERS), it soon becomes clear that she is far from ordinary. Unable to adjust to a normal life, Anna finds herself drawn instead to the wild freedom of the forest while struggling to resist the growing bloodlust that has awakened inside her. This moodily atmospheric thriller combines supernatural scares with a myth-like tale of self-discovery.

Severin Films Brings Supernatural Classic THE CHANGELING to Blu-ray on August 7th!

THE CHANGELING is one of my all-time favorite supernatural fright flicks. It's quite atmospheric, and pulls you right in as George C. Scott's John Russell begins to unravel a mystery that started nearly a century before he moved into a haunted house. I'm very excited about this release and look forward to eventually watching this film in glorious high-definition! If you're a fan of THE CHANGELING, read on Vault Dwellers and rejoice!

Synopsis: The 1980 horror classic in HD for the first time ever in America! It is perhaps the most chilling supernatural thriller of our time and remains a career peak for star George C. Scott and director Peter Medak (THE RULING CLASS, THE KRAYS). Now the film that Martin Scorsese calls, "One of the scariest movies ever made," finally comes to Blu-ray.

Academy Award winner Scott stars as a Manhattan composer consumed by grief after his wife and daughter are killed in a shocking accident. But when he moves to a secluded Victorian mansion, he will find himself haunted by a paranormal entity that may unleash an even more disturbing secret.

Trish Van Devere (THE HEARSE), two-time Oscar winner Melvyn Douglas (BEING THERE) and Jean Marsh (FRENZY) co-star in one of the most unsettling ghost stories ever made. THE CHANGELING was the winner of 8 Genie Awards, including Best Foreign Actor, Best Foreign Actress and Best Canadian Film, and is based on actual events.

This wheelchair would go on to have a major cameo in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3!

Scream Factory Gives You a Triple-Dose of John Carpenter Goodness on Blu-ray!

To date, Scream Factory has released the following John Carpenter films to Blu-ray: HALLOWEEN (and its sequels), THE FOG, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THEY LIVE, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, THE THING, and VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED. They also have a Collector's Edition of STARMAN coming to Blu-ray later this year, and have released Carpenter's ELVIS under their Shout Select label.

Now, with the release of three more Carpenter films to Blu-ray, Scream Factory need only get their hands on DARK STAR, CHRISTINE (coming soon to 4K UHD from Sony Pictures), BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, ESCAPE FROM L.A., VAMPIRES, GHOSTS OF MARS, and THE WARD. And that's just the films that John Carpenter has directed....

In any case, I'm jumping the gun because let's take a minute to focus on Scream Factory's latest Carpenter entries into their ever-expanding catalog.

Synopsis: Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow - DUNE, THE SEVENTH SIGN) is the best-selling author whose newest novel is literally driving readers insane. When he inexplicably vanishes, his publisher (Charlton Heston - SOYLENT GREEN, PLANET OF THE APES) sends special investigator John Trent (Sam Neill - JURASSIC PARK, DAYBREAKERS, DEAD CALM) to track him down. Drawn to a town that exists only in Cane's books, Trent crosses the barrier between fact and fiction and enters a terrifying world from which there is no escape.

Inspired by the tales of H.P. Lovecraft, this shocking story is, in the words of its acclaimed director, "horror beyond description!"

Synopsis: Just a quick nap and weary stock analyst Nick Halloway is sure he'll emerge as good as new. Instead, he wakes up as good as gone. Vanished. A nuclear accident has made Nick ... invisible!

The laughs and visual effects are out of sight when Chevy Chase (NATION LAMPOON'S VACATION films, CADDYSHACK) headlines MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN. Invisibility makes it easier to spy on agents (particularly chief adversary Sam Neill) who've put him in his predicament.

And he can romance a lovely documentary producer (Daryl Hannah - HIGH SPIRITS) in a way she's never "seen" before. John Carpenter (HALLOWEEN, THE THING) directs and Industrial Light and Magic create eye-opening effects as Nick embarks on his manic quest. Seeing is believing!

Synopsis: Los Angeles newcomer Leigh Michaels moves into a chic high-rise apartment building. She loves the view. So does the Peeping Tom who lives somewhere in the adjacent tower.

John Carpenter writes and directs this thriller where the breath-catching suspense starts at the moment Leigh (Lauren Hutton - AMERICAN GIGOLO, ONCE BITTEN) is framed in the lens of a telescope. For Leigh, it's the beginning of terrors that escalate from anonymous calls and gifts to lights that mysteriously flicker to prove that someone watches every moment of her life.

Leigh fights back, matching her tormentor's obsession with her own relentless drive to uncover his identity. The prey is now predator – and that escalates the stalker's game to a deadly new level. Someone is watching.

STOCK YOUR VAULT: New DVDs & Blu-rays for 07/31/2018!

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!

July 2018 has come to an end Vault Dwellers, and it is leaving with a whimper instead of a bang. Seriously, this week's release slate is absolutely dismal, though there are a few choice titles you may want to pick up.

Warner Archive Collection debuts 1960's VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED to Blu-ray disc, Sony Pictures brings PENDULUM to the HD format, and those wonderful folks from Vinegar Syndrome released a double-dose of titillation with LIQUID ASSETS and SHOWDOWN.

But the biggest treat this weak offers up has to be Scream Factory's long-awaited Blu-ray release of PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING. Boasting a 2K transfer and new extras, this crazy sequel (that was briefly helmed by James Cameron) finally gets the love it so richly deserves.

There's not much else to highlight this week Vault Dwellers (aside from some more of those Frolic Pictures Double Features) but be sure to scroll down a few inches to see this week's list of new DVDs & Blu-ray discs!

PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING Flaps Its Way to Blu-ray on July 31st!

The 80s were a magical time Vault Dwellers. Anyone with a handful of cash, a camera, and a dream (and maybe some semblance of a plot) could shoot a movie. This led to the creation of some of the craziest films ever committed to celluloid. Nothing was off-limits and nothing was out of the question. The boundaries of special effects, suspension of an audience's disbelief, and good taste were all pushed to their very limits!

Which brings us to PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING. Released in 1981, this bizarre sequel to Joe Dante's original classic was partially directed by James Cameron, scored by Stelvio Cipriani, and features Lance Henriksen and a legion of flying killer fish! While its production history is ultimately more interesting than the film itself, PIRANHA II is still a fun reminder that there was once an era in cinematic history where just about ANYTHING could get bankrolled.

Synopsis: It may seem like paradise, but just off shore, a new brand of terror has been unleashed ... While investigating the mysterious death of a diver, scuba instructor Anne Kimbrough (Tricia O'Neil, ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE?) makes a horrific discovery: mutated piranhas, with wings that enable them to fly, are responsible for the death.

As the body count rises, Anne desperately tries to convince the manager of the resort to call off the annual fish fry on the beach, but he's determined to give his guests the ultimate feeding frenzy. This exciting sequel to Joe Dante's original Piranha also stars Lance Henriksen (ALIENS, THE TERMINATOR, NEAR DARK) and is the directorial debut of James Cameron (AVATAR, THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS).

Disc Specs:

Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING will be released on Tuesday, July 31st and should cost between $20 - $24! Order yourself a copy now from AMAZON, BULLMOOSE, DIABOLIK DVD, or directly from SHOUT! FACTORY.

Also, while you may be celebrating the fact that you can now complete your PIRANHA movie collection, I must point out that you're still a movie short. In 1995, Roger Corman produced a forgotten remake of PIRANHA starring William Katt. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Scream Factory eventually releases that to Blu-ray as well!

Arrow Video Brings THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE & DOOM ASYLUM to Blu-ray on July 17th!

Chalk up two more great Arrow releases for films that  I'm not super familiar with. I'm a fan of some of Sergio Martino's other films (e.g. THE GREAT ALLIGATOR, ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN), and I do enjoy the occasional giallo film, so THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TALE is a must-see for yours truly! And I love slasher movies in general, so I'm definitely interested in DOOM ASYLUM as well! Continue reading Vault Dwellers to find out more about this duo of stellar releases!

Synopsis: One of the major consequences of Western Europe s post-war Economic Miracle was the proliferation of international travel. Eager to tap into audiences desire to experience the glamor of the jet set lifestyle, the popular filmmakers of the day rushed to make the most of the exotic locales at their disposal.

Arguably no other giallo captured this trend as vividly as The Case of the Scorpion s Tail. The film begins in London, where Lisa Baumer (Evelyn Stewart - THE PSYCHIC) learns that her husband has died in a freak plane accident. Summoned to Athens to collect his generous life insurance policy, she soon discovers that others besides herself are keen to get their hands on the money and are willing to kill for it.

Meanwhile, private detective Peter Lynch (George Hilton - THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH) arrives to investigate irregularities in the insurance claim. Teaming up with a beautiful reporter, Cléo Dupont (Anita Strindberg - YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY), Lynch resolves to unearth the truth... before he too ends up on the wrong end of the murderer s straight razor.

The second giallo by genre master Sergio Martino (TORSO, THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR), THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL combines stunning views of Athens and the Greek coastline with brutal bursts of violence, a typically tangled script by Ernesto Gastaldi (DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS), and a cast overflowing with Euro cult talent, including Alberto de Mendoza (A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN), Janine Reynaud (Jess Franco's SUCCUBUS) and Luigi Pistilli (A BAY OF BLOOD).

Synopsis: If you thought SEX AND THE CITY 2 was a stomach-churner, you ain't seen nothing yet! Long before playing one of Carrie Bradshaw's best gal pals, actress Kristen Davis found herself up against an altogether different kind of horror in 1987's DOOM ASYLUM: a riotous mix of gore, gags and goth girl groups galore!

When a group of horny teens wind up on the grounds of a creepy abandoned asylum, they think they've found the perfect place to party. Little do they know that inside the building's crumbling walls lurks a freakishly deformed maniac, driven to madness by the tragic loss of his fiancée in a car accident. With an array of grisly surgical tools at his disposal, it's only a matter of time before the youngsters begin meeting various splattery ends at the hands of the ghoulish Coroner.

Helmed by director Richard Friedman (SCARED STIFF, PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERIC'S REVENGE), and also starring Penthouse Pet of the Year 1988 Patty Mullen (FRANKENHOOKER), DOOM ASYLUM combines outlandish gore and a wise-cracking villain to create one of the most wildly entertainingly blood-spattered slashers of the late '80s

Synopsis: Living in poverty in a shared studio apartment in Los Angeles, two brothers (Justin and Aaron) receive a mysterious videotape in a box that seems to have been shipped through a hundred countries before arriving on their doorstep. On it, a Heaven’s Gate-esque cult member talks about an impending “Ascension.” We learn that the brothers were raised in this cult, and fled from it a decade ago because Justin pulled Aaron out when he became aware of an impending mass suicide.

But this tape seems to say otherwise their old family is alive and well, which opens a crack in the brothers’ relationship: Why did Justin pull Aaron away from the only family he’s ever known, lie about their mass suicide, and have him live this destitute life? On Aaron’s insistence, they go back to their homestead in order to get some closure. But when they arrive, they discover that the “cult” might not really be a cult at all, and they’re not certain just how welcome back they are. There seems to be a dark truth to the commune’s otherworldly beliefs that suggest the laws of the natural world may be very different than we assume, which propels THE ENDLESS into a Lovecraftian tale about brotherhood, giving up your personal autonomy, and history’s weird, malevolent tendency to repeat itself.
