Now Available on Blu-ray: THE HELLBENDERS, KILL THEM ALL AND COME BACK ALONE, and THE SPECIALISTS!

Cover art for Kino Lorber's Special Edition Blu-ray of THE HELLBENDERS!
KINO LORBER STUDIO CLASSICS RUSTLES UP A TRIO OF CLASSIC SPAGHETTI WESTERNS ON BLU-RAY!

I've been absolutely enamored with Spaghetti Westerns ever since I first laid eyes upon Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST so many years ago! It opened the floodgates, and soon after I watched Leone's MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY, the delightfully odd SABATA TRILOGY, the TRINITY films (starring Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer), DJANGO, and numerous others!

Truth be told, it has been some time since I delved into the Spaghetti Western sub-genre, but Kino Lorber's latest releases, which include THE HELLBENDERS and THE SPECIALISTS (both helmed by Sergio Corbucci, director of DJANGO and NAVAJO JOE) and KILL THEM ALL AND COME BACK ALONE (from THE LAST SHARK director Enzo G. Castellari) seem like a great way to jump back in! If you're as big a fan of "macaroni westerns" as I am, then continue reading to learn more about these Kino Lorber titles!

THE HELLBENDERS (AKA I CRUDELI, THE CRUEL ONES - 1967)

Synopsis: From Sergio Corbucci, the legendary director of DJANGO, NAVAJO JOE, THE GREAT SILENCE, and THE MERCENARY comes this classic spaghetti western starring screen icon Joseph Cotten (THE THIRD MAN, DUEL IN THE SUN, PORTRAIT OF JENNIE) as the fanatical patriarch of a family of ex-Confederate killers who, in order to finance an invasion of the North, massacres a Union Army convoy carrying a large shipment of money. But before the hell-bent clan can re-ignite the Civil War, they’ll have to smuggle a coffin crammed with the stolen loot across a frontier inflamed by lust, violence and extreme vengeance.

Norma Bengell (PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES), Aldo Sambrell (FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE) and Al Mulock (THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE UGLY) co-star in this fully restored western shocker—also known as THE CRUEL ONES. Featuring a classic score by renowned composer Ennio Morricone (A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, THE HATEFUL EIGHT) and beautiful photography by celebrated cinematographer Enzo Barboni (MAN OF THE EAST, NIGHTMARE CASTLE).

In 1864, mercenary Clyde McKay (Connors) leads a squad of tough-as-nails cutthroats on a mission for the Confederate high command to infiltrate an enemy fortress and steal millions in gold from the Union Army. Unfortunately, the crew he has assembled to pull off the heist is even less trustworthy than he is—and they all end up double-crossing each other. Lee Van Cleef's Guns Are Blazing in Arrow Video's Special Edition of THE GRAND DUEL!

ARROW GIVES GIANCARLO SANTI'S BIG
WILD WEST SHOWDOWN
A NEW 2K TRANSFER AND LOADS OF NEW EXTRAS!

Along with Clint Eastwood, William Berger, and Franco Nero, Lee Van Cleef is one of my favorite stars of Spaghetti Western cinema! Having seen him as the hero in films like SABATA and FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (and as the memorable villain in THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY), I'm disappointed in myself for having never watched THE GRAND DUEL, which is now available on Special Edition Blu-ray thanks to the fine folks at Arrow Video!

Synopsis: THE GRAND DUEL is an archetypal spaghetti western which boasts many of the genre's classic hallmarks including action-packed gunfights, wild stunts and an impressive climactic showdown...

Genre stalwart Lee Van Cleef (THE BIG COMBO, DAY OF ANGER) stars as a gnarled ex-sheriff called Clayton who comes to the aid of young Philipp Wermeer (Alberto Dentice), a fugitive framed for the murder of a powerful figure called The Patriarch. Clayton helps Philipp fend off attacks from bounty hunters in a series of thrilling shootouts before the two make their way to Jefferson to confront three villains known as the Saxon brothers, and reveal who really killed The Patriarch.

A complex tale of revenge penned by prolific giallo writer Ernesto Gastaldi (TORSO, THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL), THE GRAND DUEL benefits from a beguiling central performance from Lee Van Cleef and assured helmsmanship from Giancarlo Santi (assistant director to Sergio Leone on THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST). Add to this brew a memorable and tuneful score by composer Luis Bacalov (DJANGO, MILANO CALIBRO 9) and the stage is set for one of the grandest of all the Italian westerns!

Disc Specs:
Rated R | Color | 94 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - Uncompressed Mono 1.0 LPC

Extras:
  • NEW! 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative!

Arrow Video Brings KEOMA to Blu-ray on April 16th With An All New 2K Restoration & Hours of Extras!

ONE OF THE GREATEST SPAGHETTI WESTERNS OF ALL TIME GETS A STELLAR BLU-RAY RELEASE!

I was never a big fan of Westerns growing up (quite frankly I found them boring), but then I stumbled across Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, and my life changed forever. After that I watched his "Man With No Name Trilogy," the SABATA films, DJANGO, the TRINITY series, and numerous others. And yet I've somehow missed out on KEOMA, which apparently is one of the best in the entire sub-genre. I think it's high time I check it out, now that Arrow Video has taken the trouble to release this amazing Special Edition Blu-ray of Enzo G. Castellari's highly-praised film!

Synopsis: A strikingly original spaghetti western with a unique elegiac tone, Keoma truly is a one-of-a-kind classic of its genre…

The legendary Franco Nero (DJANGO, THE FIFTH CORD) stars in the titular role as a half-breed gunfighter who returns from the killing fields of the civil war to find his hometown riddled with the plague, its inhabitants terrorized (with the help of Keoma’s own estranged half-brothers) by tyrannical gang leader Caldwell (Donald O'Brien - ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST).

Keoma’s father (Willian Berger - SABATA, SARTANA IN THE VALLEY OF DEATH) welcomes his prodigal son’s return, but when Keoma saves a vulnerable pregnant woman (Olga Karlatos - ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS) from Caldwell's thugs, the stage is set for a violent confrontation. With the help of his father and his friend, the freed slave George (Woody Strode - SPARTACUS), Keoma prepares to take a savage revenge on Caldwell and his gang.

Directed with immense flair and virtuosity by veteran Enzo G. Castellari (who channels Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone in equal measure), KEOMA is an epic film of Shakespearean and biblical proportions, which boasts compelling performances and thrilling violent action. Truly epic in scope, KEOMA is considered by many to be one of the greatest spaghetti westerns.

On December 11th, Get Yourself a Fistful of Westerns from Arrow Video and Shout Select!

Limited Edition Cover Art.
CELEBRATE FIVE DECADES OF NERO AND EASTWOOD WITH THESE NEW BLU-RAY RELEASES!

UPDATE: 05/23/2020 - After almost two years, Arrow Video's DJANGO Blu-ray is finally getting released! If you missed out on the Limited Edition (or Steelbook) the last time (like most of us did) you can snap up a copy on June 30, 2020!

UPDATE: 12/10/2018 - Arrow's DJANGO discs are currently ON HOLD (so if you somehow got one, count yourself lucky!) There is a review embargo in place, and the disc is not being shipped due to (from what I've ascertained from several sources) rights issues! I'll post more info as I receive it!

Because I'm quite possibly insane, I task myself with owning the best possible edition for just about every movie in my personal collection. That means that I am constantly double-dipping on titles I already own on DVD or Blu-ray.

And now here I am once again, on the cusp of upgrading two of my favorite Westerns: DJANGO and HANG 'EM HIGH, a pair of films warning of the dangers of leaving someone for dead! While DJANGO fares better (4K restoration, lots of extras, and a bonus film!), HANG 'EM HIGH's Blu-ray does offer up a pair of new audio commentaries! For a closer look a these new releases, please continue reading pardners. :: tips hat ::

DJANGO (1966)

Synopsis: In this definitive Spaghetti Western, Franco Nero (KEOMA, THE FIFTH CORD) gives a career-defining performance as Django, a mysterious loner who arrives at a mud-drenched ghost town on the Mexico-US border, ominously dragging a coffin behind him. After saving imperiled prostitute Maria (Loredana Nusciak), Django becomes embroiled in a brutal feud between a racist gang and a band of Mexican revolutionaries...

With DJANGO, director Sergio Corbucci (THE GREAT SILENCE) upped the ante for sadism and sensationalism in Westerns, depicting machine gun massacres, mud-fighting prostitutes and savage mutilations. A huge hit with international audiences, Django’s brand of bleak nihilism would be repeatedly emulated in a raft of unofficial sequels.

Arrow Video Satisfies Your Appetite for Spaghetti Westerns with THE COMPLETE SARTANA Collection!

ON JULY 3RD, ARROW VIDEO GATHERS THE FIVE ORIGINAL SARTANA FILMS TOGETHER IN ONE BEAUTIFUL, LIMITED EDITION BLU-RAY COLLECTION!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST was the film that got me hooked on Spaghetti Westerns. Soon after that I watched Sergio Leone's MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY, THE SABATA TRILOGY, DJANGO, the TRINITY films (featuring Terrence Hill and Bud Court), and various others from the sub-genre. But I still have yet to watch a single Sartana flick, which makes this set a definite must-own for yours truly! But if you want it, you better act fast because this set is limited to 2,500 copies!

About The Complete Sartana: Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name spawned imitations, variations and shameless rip-offs keen to emulate his success at the box office. Within months of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS’ release, Giuliano Gemma was playing RINGO, who was then followed by Franco Nero’s DJANGO, Tony Anthony’s THE STRANGER, and Gianni Garko’s SARTANA – each providing their own twist on the Eastwood antihero, and each of them then subject to their own spate of unofficial sequels, spoofs and cash-ins.

Sartana tapped into more than just his Spaghetti Western predecessors – a mysterious figure, he has a spectral quality, aided by his Count Dracula-like cloak which also nods towards comic strip figure Mandrake the Magician, with whom he shares he shares a penchant for card tricks. He takes pride in his appearance unlike the Eastwood’s dusty wanderer or Nero’s mud-caked drifter. And there’s a dose of James Bond too in his fondness for gadgetry and the droll sense of humor.

Unsurprisingly, this unique figure in the genre was treated to four official follow-ups. THE COMPLETE SARTANA collects all five films, presented here in brand-new restorations: IF YOU MEET SARTANA... PRAY FOR YOUR DEATH, I AM SARTANA YOUR ANGEL OF DEATH, HAVE A GOOD FUNERAL MY FRIEND... SARTANA WILL PAY, LIGHT THE FUSE... SARTANA IS COMING, and SARTANA'S HERE... TRADE YOUR PISTOL FOR A COFFIN, in which George Hilton replaced Garko in the lead role.

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 466 minutes (total run-time of all five films) | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (2.35:1)
Audio - Uncompressed mono 1.0 PCM audio (English & Italian)

THE GREAT SILENCE Gets a 2K Restoration for Its 50th Anniversary! Own it on DVD & Blu-ray on June 5th!

SERGIO CORBUCCI'S SPAGHETTI WESTERN MASTERPIECE COMES TO DVD & BLU-RAY IN A MUST-OWN 50TH ANNIVERSARY RELEASE!

To be perfectly honest Vault Dwellers, the only Sergio Corbucci films I've ever laid eyes on are DJANGO and NAVAJO JOE. I must correct this injustice, and it seems to me that the most logical step is to watch THE GREAT SILENCE, which debuted in theaters back in 1968! This tale of cruel bounty hunters and a silent gunslinging hero was restored in 2K and features some great special features!

Synopsis: On an unforgiving, snow-swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski, NOSFERATU, THE VAMPYRE) prey on a band of persecuted outlaws who have taken to the hills. As the price on each head is collected one-by-one, only a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant, THE CONFORMIST) stands between the innocent refugees and the greed and corruption that the bounty hunters represent. But, in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong aren't always clear and good doesn't always triumph.

Featuring superb photography and a haunting score from maestro Ennio Morricone, director Sergio Corbucci's (DJANGO, COMPANEROS) bleak, brilliant and violent vision of an immoral, honorless west is widely considered to be among the very best and most influential Euro-Westerns ever made.

Guess we won't have to add this film to our WANTED ON BLU-RAY column.

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 105 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - Italian & English audio options. (2.0 Mono?)

Extras:
  • NEW! 2K Restoration of the film!
  • Cox on Corbucci - Filmmaker and author Alex Cox (Repo Man) surveys Sergio Corbucci's career and how The Great Silence fits within the maestro's oeuvre.
  • Western, Italian Style - This 1968 documentary on Italian westerns includes prime behind the scenes footage of The Great Silence.

  • 2018 theatrical trailer.

Duck You Suckers! A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE Now Available on Blu-ray from Kino Classics!

Blu-ray Cover: SIDE A
SERGIO LEONE'S LESSER KNOWN SPAGHETTI WESTERN CLASSIC GETS A BIG UPGRADE WITH THIS NEW KINO RELEASE!

When you hear Sergio Leone's name, it instantly conjures up memories of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY, and perhaps even ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. However, I expect that very few of you Vault Dwellers would have recalled Leone's A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE (aka DUCK, YOU SUCKER), which sadly doesn't seem to get the same widespread love that his other films enjoy. But that may all change now that Kino Classics has given this oft-overlooked Spaghetti Western a fantastic, extras-packed Blu-ray!

Synopsis: From acclaimed director Sergio Leone comes his final Western--a relentlessly entertaining film that teams an Irish explosives specialist with a Mexican peasant-turned-revolutionary leader with thunderously explosive results! Starring acting giants Rod Steiger (IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT) as Juan Miranda, a cigar-chomping, salt-of-the-earth peasant with a Robin Hood heart and James Coburn (HARRY IN YOUR POCKET) as John Mallory, a dynamite-tossing Irish revolutionary who has fled to Mexico to practice his skills.

Together, they're a devilishly volatile mix of anti-establishment philosophies and violent tendencies as they attempt to liberate political prisoners, defend their compatriots against a well-equipped militia, and risk their lives on a train filled with explosives. Featuring a haunting and rousing score by iconic composer Ennio Morricone (DEATH RIDES A HORSE, NAVAJO JOE).
