ARROW VIDEO GIVES DAVID NELSON'S LONG FORGOTTEN SLASHER FLICK A NEW LEASE ON LIFE WITH THEIR NEW LIMITED EDITION RELEASE!
I'm an absolute sucker for slasher flicks! From the major franchises, to the multitude of international standalone films featuring psychotic killers, I've seen just about everything the sub-genre has to offer. But every now and again, some rare or obscure slasher movie claws its way up from the depths to be rescued by a boutique Blu-ray label. Which brings me of course to DEATH SCREAMS! The folks at Arrow Video got their hands on the only
existing 35mm print of this film and have given it a new 2K restoration, along with a variety of new bonus features
(which include two audio commentaries and a making-of documentary)! I have to admit that I'm totally in the dark on this one Vault Dwellers, but that didn't stop me from blindly pre-ordering a copy once I learned of its existence! If you're on the fence about picking up a copy of DEATH SCREAMS, continue onward to learn more about this (mostly) forgotten slice of slasher film history!
Synopsis:
In one of the most unlikely cinematic pairings of all time, David
Nelson (who rose to fame as a child star playing alongside his real-life
family in the wholesome TV show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet)
directs Playboy Playmate and adult star Susan Kiger in this
bodycount-heavy, long overlooked slice of Southern fried hack-and-slash –
1982's DEATH SCREAMS!
Late one night, a young couple are
brutally murdered at a make-out spot by an unseen assailant, their
bodies tossed into the nearby river. As the lifeless lovers drift slowly
downstream, the residents of the town excitedly prepare themselves for
their annual carnival, unaware that a machete-wielding maniac with a
twisted grudge is lurking in their midst. When a group of teen revelers
plan a late-night after party down in the local cemetery, they
unwittingly set the stage for a bloodbath.
DEATH SCREAMS, which
was released on US VHS as HOUSE OF DEATH (and on UK DVD with the reels
in the wrong order!) oozes early '80s regional slasher charm from its
every pore, boasting an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink final reel
featuring slashed throats, bisected bodies, and exploding heads. At long
last arriving on Blu-ray and lovingly restored from the only-known
existing 35mm print, this little-seen slasher classic is ready to carve
its way into the bleeding hearts of horror fans everywhere!

Back in January, I threw out a prediction that this set would become a reality by November 13, 2020, and it turns out that I was just a month off! But even I couldn't BEGIN to surmise that the end result would be a sixteen-disc beast with so much restoration work, and so many hours upon hours of special features!
And sure, while we all would have liked to have seen an extended cut of PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD (that footage is likely lost for all eternity sadly), and even though there have been some issues with the final product (as stated way up top), this is a FANTASTIC release and likely the closest we'll ever get to a definitive collection! So what's the price of this monster? Depending on where you go it goes for between $130 - $160, which isn't bad considering that you get a dozen feature-length films, multiple documentaries, and two bonus discs loaded with content.

ARROW VIDEO BRINGS JOSE RAMON LARRAZ' OFT-OVERLOOKED 1988 SLASHER FLICK TO BLU-RAY WITH A NEW 2K RESTORATION AND EXTRAS!
One of my favorite sub-genres of Horror has to be the slasher film. From the mighty franchises filled with increasingly ridiculous sequels (e.g. FRIDAY THE 13TH and HALLOWEEN), to the one hit wonders (e.g. THE BURNING, INTRUDER, MY BLOODY VALENTINE), I feel like I've seen just about all of them. Leave it to Arrow Video to burst my bubble with their recent announcement of EDGE OF THE AXE! I have never seen this Spanish slasher flick before (though I do vaguely recall seeing its minimalist VHS cover art at my local mom & pop video store back in the day), but the more I read about it, the more I need to see it! And once next week rolls around, I will finally have my chance to experience this rarely-mentioned slasher flick in startling HD clarity!
Synopsis: From cult Spanish filmmaker José Ramón Larraz (VAMPYRES, SYMPTOMS) comes this long-neglected late 80s slasher classic, finally unleashed on Blu-ray for the first time ever!
The rural community of Paddock County is being rocked by the crazed exploits of an axe-wielding psychopath, who stalks the night in a black trenchcoat and mask. As the victims pile up, the authorities attempt to keep a lid on the situation, whilst computer whizz-kid Gerald and girlfriend Lillian seek to unmask the killer before the town population reaches zero.
Nominally set in Northern California but shot primarily in Madrid, giving the film an off-kilter, American/European atmosphere akin to the likes of PIECES, Edge of the Axe is a late entry hack-and-slash masterpiece from one of the titans of Spanish terror.

Hot damn that's a lot of love for a movie that most of us had forgotten about - good on Arrow Video for taking the time to give EDGE OF THE AXE a new lease on life! I grew up on a steady diet of heavily-edited slasher films when I was a kid, and typically gravitated toward the usual suspects. (i.e. Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, etc.) I eventually got out of my slasher comfort zone in my early teens, and finally got to see many classics in their R-rated glory, while also discovering numerous non-franchise slasher gems like MY BLOODY VALENTINE! This film in particular became an instant favorite, and I was filled with excitement when Lionsgate released it to Blu-ray back in 2009 with various gory bits edited back into the movie! With a new HD transfer, restored footage (thought lost for many years), and new extras, clearly there was no way anyone could top that long out of print Blu-ray release.... UNTIL NOW.

TODD FARMER AND PATRICK LUSSIER ATTEMPT TO CREATE A NEW HORROR ICON WITH "TRICK!"
While I haven't seen all of the films he has directed, at the moment I haven't met a Patrick Lussier film I didn't like. DRACULA 2000 was a solid reboot of the world's most famous vampire, MY BLOODY VALENTINE proved to be a shockingly fun (and competent) remake, and the completely off-the-rails DRIVE ANGRY is a total blast. (As far as Nicolas Cage revenge films go, I'll take this one over MANDYany day!)
Teamed with Todd Farmer, the man who wrote the screenplay for JASON X (as well as DRIVE ANGRY and MY BLOODY VALENTINE), is it any wonder that I'm kind of excited for TRICK? While I think it is super bizarre to release a Halloween-themed Horror film in December, I welcome this new slasher movie with open arms and I'm honestly thinking of just making it a blind buy - I trust these guys that much!
Synopsis: On Halloween night in 2015, Patrick “Trick” Weaver massacred his classmates at a costume party. After being arrested, he managed to escape police custody, but not before being shot five times by Detective Mike Denver (Omar Epps). Everyone believes Trick must be dead, but when a masked killer reappears the following Halloween, and every Halloween after that, they realize the nightmare is not over. With Trick wreaking havoc and killing people in increasingly terrifying ways, Denver will stop at nothing to finish what he started and bring the carnage to an end!

While THE FAN's subject matter isn't entirely new (I've seen multiple movies where a crazed fan stalks a celebrity), the cast of THE FAN pretty much sold me on this film! THE FAN was initially a flop when it was released in theaters in May of 1981 (some believe this was due in part to John Lennon's murder by Beatles fan Mark David Chapman) and has been out of print since the early 2000's! But perhaps now, after nearly forty years, Edward Bianchi's film will finally find its audience! THE FAN arrives on Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 19th, and should cost between $24 - $26! UPDATE [08/20/2025]: ALONE IN THE DARK is once again out of print. Used and new copies of the Scream Factory Blu-ray (released on September 14th, 2021) are still available from third party sellers.
I know I've said this before but it bears repeating: Back in the ole video store days, VHS cover art was on point. It was eye-catching and the best designs told you everything you needed to know about the movie before you even read the description on the back.
And some of those covers seared themselves into your brain, never to be forgotten. For me, that is definitely the case with Jack Sholder's 1982 slasher classic, ALONE IN THE DARK. (Not to be confused with Uwe Boll's awful video game adaptation featuring Christian Slater. Poor Christian Slater....)
The cover is a bit misleading as there's MORE than one killer in the film, and if memory serves, an axe doesn't really feature prominently in the multiple slayings that take place. Still, the image of a madman, bloody axe in hand in the foreground, silently contemplating the secluded house in the distance on a moonlit night, is somewhat chilling. The movie itself, is far from being your typical slasher movie, and is equal parts hilarious (Donald Pleasance's super laid-back demeanor in this movie cracks me up), and horrifying (you just may find yourself peeking under your bed to make sure a knife-wielding Martin Landau isn't under there).
While Jack Sholder's ALONE IN THE DARK seems to have finally found its audience all these years later, the movie has remained out of print for quite some time. And as we near the film's 37th Anniversary (it was released in theaters on November 19, 1982), wouldn't it be great if someone announced a Blu-ray release of this criminally underrated (and underseen) Horror classic?!
Synopsis: Dr. Dan Potter (Dwight Schultz) gets a new job at a psychiatric clinic run by Dr. Leo Bain (Donald Pleasance), replacing Dr. Harry Merton. Among the patients Dr. Potter must tend to, are four particularly dangerous men that are incarcerated on the clinic's third floor: Paranoid war vet Frank Hawkes (Jack Palance), murderous arsonist Byron "Preacher" Sutcliff (Martin Landau), child molester Ronald "Fatty" Elster (Erland van Lidth), and the homicidal John "The Bleeder" Skaggs (Phillip Clark).
ALONE IN THE DARK is a lot like 1989's THE DREAM TEAM... but with way more murder!
Convinced that Dan Potter has murdered their former psychiatrist, the "Third Floor Four" plot to avenge (the very much alive) Harry Merton. Though breaking out seems impossible, after a power outage the four men execute an escape plan and eventually lay siege to Dr. Potter's home. What follows is a nail-biting sequence of events where the Potter clan is cut off from any aid, and must fend for themselves against a brutal surprise attack orchestrated by Frank Hawkes and his fellow psychos.
Availability: ALONE IN THE DARK is completely out of print. If you can find a reasonably-priced VHS tape or DVD then go play the lottery afterward because you are one lucky son of a gun! Otherwise, the only way to currently watch this Horror classic is a low-quality video on YouTube.
Current Rights Holder: New Line Cinema produced and distributed ALONE IN THE DARK theatrically in November of '82 followed by an eventual VHS release from RCA / Columbia Pictures Home Video. In 1993 Image Entertainment brought the film to Laserdisc, then released it to DVD on September 13, 2005 in a great Special Edition that contained cast interviews and a director's commentary. The last time ALONE IN THE DARK was available on any format was in 2007 when Image added it to a four-movie collection that also featured AFRAID OF THE DARK, and RELENTLESS 3 & 4.
So who owns the rights at the moment? Well... I'm not entirely sure. The easy choice would be New Line (now a subsidiary of Warner Bros.) so there's a slight chance that ALONE IN THE DARK could eventually become part of the Warner Archive Collection, or even join Scream Factory's catalog as they have recently been raiding (mostly Hammer Horror) titles from Warner's vaults.
However, if we look back at Image Entertainment another possibility opens up. Image was merged with Acorn Media in April 2012, and became RLJ Entertainment. (Which was acquired by AMC Networks last July.) So there's a definite possibility that if (or hopefully when) ALONE IN THE DARK gets a Blu-ray release, there may be a "RLJE Films" logo on its spine!

Honestly Vault Dwellers, I'd just be happy to own this movie on a bare bones Blu-ray, but it doesn't hurt to dream big, right? I'm not entirely sure who to prod for an HD release of this film, but as ALONE IN THE DARK nears its 40th Anniversary, hopefully my pleas to the movie gods are heard. I guess all we can really do is wait and hope for the unexpected announcement of ALONE IN THE DARK (LIMITED DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION) sometime in the not-to-distant future!

For as long as I can remember, I have had a love/hate relationship with Edwin Brown's THE PREY. It was one of the earliest slasher films I watched, and while it does have its moments, it is honestly a chore to sit through. But every so often, I watch THE PREY again just to make sure I still hate it. So maybe, in some strange way.... I actually like this movie, because I've revisited it multiple times over the years. Perhaps that's why I'm suddenly so keen on owning Arrow's new Blu-ray which offers up a new 2K transfer, tons of new extras, and THREE CUTS OF THE FILM?! Whaaaaa?
Synopsis: One of the most underrated efforts to hail from the slice-and-dice boom, THE PREY at last emerges from the VHS wilderness in a brand new 2K restoration from the recently unearthed original camera negative!
Three young couples set off into the mountains for a weekend of climbing, drinking, and lovemaking. I remember seeing VALENTINE on the big screen back in 2001, but aside from the little twist at the end I don't remember much else about it. In fact this seems like a movie that isn't discussed very often among horror fans, which is why I was extremely shocked to see VALENTINE get so much love from Scream Factory! Guess it's time to revisit this (possible) gem, which arrived a little late to the game after the slasher boom of the 90s!
Synopsis: Revenge is sweet, just like Valentine's Day chocolates. At least, that is what a vengeful, Cupid-masked killer thinks. Be my Valentine ... or else! Broken hearts and other mortal wounds await a cast of contemporary young stars when they play dating-scene veterans dying for love in this humor-laced, twist-filled thriller cleverly directed by Jamie Blanks (URBAN LEGEND) and starring David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones), Denise Richards (STARSHIP TROOPERS), Marley Shelton (SCREAM 4, PLANET TERROR), Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) and more. WATCH JESSICA ROTHE DIE OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN "HAPPY DEATH DAY!"
I recall seeing the trailer for this film earlier last year and thinking to myself "Huh, this could be fun." Though I have still not had the chance to watch it, by all accounts, HAPPY DEATH DAY indeed turned out to be a total blast to watch!
And now that this critical (and box office) success is out on DVD & Blu-ray, I can finally check it out for myself!
Synopsis: Blumhouse (SPLIT, GET OUT) produces this original and
inventive rewinding thriller in which a blissfully self-centered co-ed
(Jessica Rothe, LA LA LAND) is doomed to relive the day of her murder
unless she can identify her masked assailant and hopefully stop the
madness. If she can’t, she will be stuck in an insane loop, reliving a
ghoulish nightmare that has become her death day.

Greetings everyone! Vault Master here with another trio of trailers for your perusing pleasure! This time around we have a bizarre Horror tale from director Takashi Miike, a documentary about the first actor to portray the legendary slasher villain Michael Myers, and a parody trailer involving murderous Pokemon! Your mind won't believe what your eyes are telling you is true!
TRAILER #1: OVER YOUR DEAD BODY
I haven't watched a lot of Takashi Miike flicks (maybe a half-dozen or so), but I've enjoyed the few I have seen. One of his most recent efforts is OVER YOUR DEAD BODY, a weird, reality-bending supernatural tale. It's a story of love, jealousy, and revenge on the set of a play that is based upon legend. Honestly, this doesn't look like my cup of tea, so I think I'll hold out for Miike's YAKUZA APOCALYPSE instead.
TRAILER #2: HORROR ICON - INSIDE MICHAEL'S MASK
Filmmakers David Langill and Jordan Pacheco are currently working on a documentary about the actor who first portrayed Michael Myers on film: Tony Moran. This doc features interviews with Moran, as well as other genre vets like Felissa Rose, Debbie Rochon, Ernie Hudson, Dee Wallace, P.J. Soles, and many others! HORROR ICON: INSIDE MICHAEL'S MASK is set to debut in October 2016!
TRAILER #3: CATCH 'EM ALL, KILL 'EM ALL
From the guys that brought you PAPERBOY 3: THE HARD WAY, comes this parody trailer that mashes up Pokemon and slasher cinema! When a mysterious Pokeball is unlocked, the evil Jigglypuff escapes and goes on a violent killing spree! Enjoy this faux trailer from MIDNIGHT SHOW creator Newt Wallen, and be sure to share it with a friend!
