SCREAM FACTORY GIVES CARPENTER'S "ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK" SEQUEL A NEW 4K TRANSFER AND BONUS FEATURES!
While not all of John Carpenter's later works were up to snuff with the legendary films he shot in the 70s and 80s, I still have a soft spot for most of them, including the oft-maligned ESCAPE FROM L.A. Is it super cheesy? Absolutely. Is it a far cry from the classic original? Definitely. But dammit, despite the surfing, and the basketballing, and the hang-gliding.... it is still very much a Snake Plissken adventure at its core!
And now it's back in print and better than ever with Scream Factory's new Collector's Edition release, which contains a new 4K transfer of the film, plus numerous NEW cast & crew interviews! To learn more about this disc (which you're going to buy, even if you hate the movie) just continue reading fellow Carpenter fans!
Synopsis: Snake is back! Kurt Russell rejoins filmmakers John Carpenter and Debra Hill to do to Los Angeles what they did to the Big Apple in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK – with even more futuristic thrills and big action!
Into the 9.6-quaked Los Angeles of 2013 comes Snake Plissken (Russell). His job: wade through L.A.'s ruined landmarks to retrieve a doomsday device. Don't miss the excitement as Snake surfs Wilshire Blvd., shoots hoops at the Coliseum, dive bombs the Happy Kingdom theme park, and mixes it up with a wild assortment of friends and foes including Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, George Corraface, Cliff Robertson and Pam Grier. ESCAPE FROM L.A. is a "go-for-broke action extravaganza" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)!

SCREAM FACTORY ADDS FRANK LALOGGIA'S SECOND DIRECTORIAL EFFORT AND ANOTHER JOHN CARPENTER FILM TO THEIR CATALOG!
Growing up, I was always a fan of Frank LaLoggia's LADY IN WHITE (which used to air on USA Network all of the time), which eventually led me to discover FEAR NO EVIL. LaLoggia's tale of a teenage Antichrist is a far different beast than his classic ghost story, and features a bloody baptism, death by dodgeball, and a showdown between the reincarnation of Satan and two archangels! It's not for all tastes, but I assure you that the movie really grows on you after multiple viewings.
John Carpenter's VAMPIRES was made in the twilight of his career as a director, and is one of his better efforts. (It followed ESCAPE FROM L.A. and preceded GHOSTS OF MARS and THE WARD.) James Woods (before Twitter drove him mad) leads a team of hunters against a powerful vampire who wants to make himself immune to sunlight! Both films get lots of new extras, but FEAR NO EVIL also gets a 4K transfer! I'm super excited for these new titles - I can't wait to add these to my collection!
FEAR NO EVIL (1981)
Synopsis: God has appointed three archangels to fight against Lucifer, who has assumed human features. Archangel Raphael, in the guise of Father Damon, kills Lucifer and ends his life in jail. But his sister, Archangel Mikhail, knows that one day the Devil will reappear. Eighteen years later, Lucifer returns, now in the form of Andrew, a brilliant but shy schoolboy who becomes conscious of his devilish nature on his birthday. Archangel Mikhail, allies with Gabrielle to defeat Lucifer in this "remarkably assured, personal and powerful film [that] is never less than gripping" (TV Guide)!

When Master Vampire Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith) decimates Jack's entire team, Crow and the sole team survivor, Montoya (Daniel Baldwin), set out in pursuit.
Breaking all the rules, Crow and Montoya take one of Valek's victims hostage – a beautiful but unlucky prostitute (Sheryl Lee). She is the sole psychic link to Valek and they use her to track down the leader of the undead. As Valek nears the climax of his 600-year search for the Berziers Cross, Jack and the new Team Crow do everything possible to prevent him from possessing the only thing that can grant him and all the vampires the omnipotent power to walk the world in daylight.

With the addition of VAMPIRES, Scream Factory has nearly all of Carpenter's films in their grasp and I'm pretty OK with that. (If you're keeping track, they are only missing DARK STAR, ESCAPE FROM L.A., GHOSTS OF MARS, THE WARD, and Carpenter's two contributions to the Masters of Horror TV series: CIGARETTE BURNS and PRO-LIFE!) KINO LORBER GIVES SOME MAJOR LOVE TO THIS OBSCURE 80S HEIST THRILLER!
On paper, BLACK MOON RISING seems like it just has to be one of the greatest films ever made! Directed by Harley Cokeliss (BATTLETRUCK, DREAM DEMON, MALONE) this film was written by John Carpenter, scored by Lalo Schifrin, and stars Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hamilton, Robert Vaughn, Bubba Smith, Nick Cassavetes, Keenan Wynn, Richard Jaeckal, and several other familiar faces!
I saw this movie on VHS many years ago and don't remember a thing about it (other than I think I liked it?), but I'm eager to revisit BLACK MOON RISING based solely upon the talent on both sides of the camera!
Synopsis: When master thief Sam Quint (Tommy Lee Jones - THE FUGITIVE, BLOWN AWAY, THE PARK IS MINE) is hired by the government to steal top-secret data from a crime organization, he hides the stolen data in the experimental supercar, The Black Moon. But when the car is then stolen by high-tech auto thief Nina (Linda Hamilton - THE TERMINATOR), Quint must pull off the most daring heist of all: break into an impenetrable skyscraper and steal it back. With time running out and all sides closing in, Quint and Nina take The Black Moon on one final ride towards a shattering climax of sky-high suspense.

BEFORE YOU SEE THE NEW "HALLOWEEN" SEQUEL, BE SURE TO REVISIT THE ORIGINAL FILM IN 4K RESOLUTION!
One of the constant headaches of being a collector is that you always feel compelled to upgrade something you already own, either because a newer release offers up more extras and better picture quality, or because it is coming out in a new format. Case in point, the latest re-release of John Carpenter's eternal classic, HALLOWEEN!
Synopsis: On a black and unholy Halloween night years ago, little Michael Myers
brutally slaughtered his sister in cold blood. But for the last fifteen
years, town residents have rested easy, knowing that he was safely
locked away in a mental hospital — until tonight. Tonight, Michael
returns to the same quiet neighborhood to relive his grisly murder
again…and again…and again. For this is a night of evil. Tonight is
Halloween!

In any case, I'm jumping the gun because let's take a minute to focus on Scream Factory's latest Carpenter entries into their ever-expanding catalog.
IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (COLLECTOR'S EDITION - 1994)
Synopsis: Sutter Cane (JĂĽrgen Prochnow - DUNE, THE SEVENTH SIGN) is the best-selling author whose newest novel is literally driving readers insane. When he inexplicably vanishes, his publisher (Charlton Heston - SOYLENT GREEN, PLANET OF THE APES) sends special investigator John Trent (Sam Neill - JURASSIC PARK, DAYBREAKERS, DEAD CALM) to track him down. Drawn to a town that exists only in Cane's books, Trent crosses the barrier between fact and fiction and enters a terrifying world from which there is no escape.
Inspired by the tales of H.P. Lovecraft, this shocking story is, in the words of its acclaimed director, "horror beyond description!"

MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN (1992)
Synopsis: Just a quick nap and weary stock analyst Nick Halloway is sure he'll emerge as good as new. Instead, he wakes up as good as gone. Vanished. A nuclear accident has made Nick ... invisible!
The laughs and visual effects are out of sight when Chevy Chase (NATION LAMPOON'S VACATION films, CADDYSHACK) headlines MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN. Invisibility makes it easier to spy on agents (particularly chief adversary Sam Neill) who've put him in his predicament.
And he can romance a lovely documentary producer (Daryl Hannah - HIGH SPIRITS) in a way she's never "seen" before. John Carpenter (HALLOWEEN, THE THING) directs and Industrial Light and Magic create eye-opening effects as Nick embarks on his manic quest. Seeing is believing! Disc Specs:

SOMEONE'S WATCHING ME? (1978)
Synopsis: Los Angeles newcomer Leigh Michaels moves into a chic high-rise apartment building. She loves the view. So does the Peeping Tom who lives somewhere in the adjacent tower.
John Carpenter writes and directs this thriller where the breath-catching suspense starts at the moment Leigh (Lauren Hutton - AMERICAN GIGOLO, ONCE BITTEN) is framed in the lens of a telescope. For Leigh, it's the beginning of terrors that escalate from anonymous calls and gifts to lights that mysteriously flicker to prove that someone watches every moment of her life.
Leigh fights back, matching her tormentor's obsession with her own relentless drive to uncover his identity. The prey is now predator – and that escalates the stalker's game to a deadly new level. Someone is watching.

ON OCTOBER 11TH, SCREAM FACTORY DELIVERS THE DEFINITIVE BLU-RAY OF JOHN CARPENTER'S
"THE THING!"
UPDATE: The original street date of September 20th has been pushed back until October 11th! Glaring audio issues were found in the main audio track, so all of us fans will have to wait just a bit longer to get the best possible release of this Carpenter classic!
THE THING is one of my all-time favorite films, so I'm ok with having to buy it again. (I've previously owned it on VHS, DVD, and currently own the Universal Blu-ray.) But now it's time to upgrade again to the last THING release (you and) I will ever need!
Film Synopsis: In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Soon unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and takes on the appearance of those it kills.
Paranoia strikes deep, and the stakes are high as the military personnel attempt to flush out the creature and kill it before it can assimilate them all. If they fail, "this Thing" could possibly make its way to civilization, where it could wipe out all of humanity in mere months!
Directed by Carpenter, THE THING stars Kurt Russell (ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA) and features special visual effects by Albert Whitlock (DUNE) and special makeup effects by Rob Bottin (THE HOWLING, FIGHT CLUB).

A new HD transfer?! A newly created 5.1 audio track?!! The Network TV Edit of the film?!?! And supposedly, there may be even MORE extras piled on before September draws near! Clearly this is the last release of this film any of us will ever need, so naturally you'll want to order your copy ASAP.
Shout! Factory did have a limited (to 1,500) edition up for pre-order on their site the other day, but that is currently gone! (All it came with was a second slipcover and an additional poster featuring alternate poster art, plus you would have gotten the disc three weeks early!)
And for those of you who aren't in a rush to get your paws on this Blu-ray (HA!), you can always order a copy from AMAZON.COM!
Regardless, order your copy of THE THING: COLLECTOR'S EDITION and then start counting down to OCTOBER 11TH (or September 20th if you ordered the Deluxe Edition from Shout! Factory, or September 27th if you ordered the standard Collector's Edition)!
DAMNATION AWAITS YOU ON APRIL 12TH WITH THE RELEASE OF SCREAM FACTORY'S "VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED" COLLECTOR'S EDITION!
More John Carpenter on Blu-ray is a good thing people! I can't wait to watch this flick as I missed out on it during its initial theatrical run and home video release. I for one am excited to adding this to my Blu-ray collection this April!
Film Synopsis: From the master of suspense, John Carpenter, comes a chilling new version of the sci-fi classic. Something is terribly wrong in the tiny village of Midwich.
