Umbrella Entertainment's November 2017 New Releases!

ON NOVEMBER 1ST, RACE ACROSS AMERICA, HUNT HUMANS, AND SURVIVE A PANDEMIC WITH UMBRELLA ENTERTAINMENT'S NEWEST RELEASES!

This November, Umbrella Entertainment's got another great round of titles coming to DVD & Blu-ray! Based upon Michael Crichton's novel, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN has humanity facing extinction when a virus from outer space makes landfall on Earth, CANNONBALL RUN II's crazy cast of characters race from coast to coast to win a huge cash prize, ATTACK FORCE Z's all-star cast (Mel Gibson, Sam Neill, John Philip Law, and... John Waters?!) goes on a rescue mission during the Pacific Theater in WWII, and HUNTING HUMANS is a new film where a rural desert town's residents literally hunt humans for sport! For full specs & extras on these titles, scroll down!

ANNOUNCEMENTS & RELEASE DATE CHANGES:
  • Umbrella's 40th Anniversary Blu-ray of SUSPIRIA was also due out on November 1st, but has since been pushed back at least three to four weeks in order to deal with an issue. While this is disappointing news, it is good to know that the folks at Umbrella are making sure fans get the best release possible!
  • RAZORBACK's Blu-ray release has been pushed back until February 7th! However, this disc will be absolutely loaded with awesome extras, including an audio commentary, interviews, deleted scenes, a "VHS cut" of the film, and more!
  • Umbrella just announced the Blu-ray debut of FAIR GAME, yet another Ozploitation classic that I can't wait to check out! Release date and extras TBA!

THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (1971)

Synopsis: Directed with clinical precision by Academy Award(R) winner Robert Wise, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN is a compelling account of the earth's first biological crisis. After an errant satellite crashes to earth near a remote New Mexico village, the recovery team discovers that everyone in the town are victims of a horrible death, with the mysterious exception of an infant and an old homeless man.

The survivors are brought to a state-of-the-art underground laboratory, where the puzzled scientists race against time to determine the nature of the deadly alien virus before it wreaks havoc. A trailblazer in the areas of special effects and inventive sets, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN is based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel that created national paranoia for it's topical relevance to the first moon landing and is perhaps the most chillingly realistic science fiction thriller ever made.

Arrow Video invites you to partake of H.G. Lewis' BLOOD FEAST on October 24th!

ON OCTOBER 24TH, ARROW VIDEO SERVES UP A 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITION OF H.G. LEWIS' INFAMOUS "BLOOD FEAST!"

Though I have seen BLOOD FEAST in 35mm, and briefly met and shook hands with the late H.G. Lewis, I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of this film. That being said, I cannot deny that BLOOD FEAST served as a very important part of Horror film history, as it is the great grandaddy of splatter cinema! Arrow's release boasts an HD transfer of the film, plus a wealth of extra features. This is such a great-looking release, that even I wouldn't mind adding it to my collection!

Synopsis: The filmography of late movie maverick Herschell Gordon Lewis brims with the mad, macabre, and just downright bizarre. But perhaps the most unhinged of all his directorial efforts, and certainly the most influential, must surely be his original gore-fest BLOOD FEAST, the first ever splatter movie!

Dorothy Fremont is looking to throw a party unlike any other, and she gets just that when she hires the decidedly sinister Fuad Ramses to cater the event. Promising to provide her guests with an authentic Egyptian feast, Ramses promptly sets about acquiring the necessary ingredients the body parts of nubile young women!

Featuring a host of stomach-churning gore gags including the infamous tongue sequence and much more nastiness besides, Herschell Gordon Lewis' BLOOD FEAST more than lives up to its name and remains essential viewing for any self-respecting splatter fan.

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color | 67 minutes | Region A
Video - 1080p Widescreen (1.85:1)
Audio - LPCM Mono

Extras:
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard DVD presentations.
  • Scum of the Earth – Herschelll Gordon Lewis’ 1963 feature!
  • Blood Perspectives – Filmmakers Nicholas McCarthy and Rodney Ascher on Blood Feast!
  • Herschell’s History – Archival interview in which director Herschell Gordon Lewis discusses his entry into the film industry.

Kino Lorber resurrects RAWHEAD REX and revs up ROLLING VENGEANCE on DVD & Blu-ray!

TWO LONG-TIME CULT FAVORITES
ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BLU-RAY, THANKS TO KINO CLASSICS!

Both RAWHEAD REX and ROLLING VENGEANCE have been personal favorites of mine for decades! And though I already own them both (on DVD and DVD-R respectively), I do believe it is time for an upgrade!

RAWHEAD REX (1986)

Synopsis: "He’s pure evil… pure power… pure terror!" RawHead Rex is a demon, alive for millennia, trapped in the depths of hell, and waiting for release. He is held by an ancient seal, imprisoned for centuries in a barren field near the hamlet of Rathmore, Ireland. In time, this gruesome legacy has been forgotten, dismissed as an odd pre-Christian myth until Tom Garron (Donal McCann, DECEMBER BRIDE) decides to plow the field his ancestors knew better than to disturb.

The seal is broken and an unspeakable evil is unleashed - on a rampage of blood and lust. Howard Hallenbeck (David Dukes, GODS AND MONSTERS), an American historian on a working vacation with his family, discovers on the stained glass windows of a local church a series of scenes illustrating the reign of terror of RawHead Rex, but the one piece of glass depicting the defeat of the monster is missing.

RAWHEAD REX is on the loose, and he is insatiable as Howard desperately races against time for a way to stop the vicious monster. Directed by George Pavlou (TRANSMUTATIONS) with a screenplay by horror legend Clive Barker (HELLRAISER, CANDYMAN, NIGHTBREED, LORD OF ILLUSIONS).

ROLLING VENGEANCE (1987)

Synopsis: When a clan of drunken goons get off scot-free after senselessly killing a young trucker’s family, the trucker, Joey Rosso (Don Michael Paul, ROBOT WARS), takes matters into his own hands by building the ultimate monster truck to even the score. Spitting flames, and armed with a giant drill, his awesome rig is unstoppable as Joey pursues the clan leader Tiny Doyle (Ned Beatty, WHITE LIGHTNING) and his murderous offspring.

He tracks down the clan, one by one, crashing cars, flattening trucks, demolishing buildings and destroying anything or anyone that gets in his way. ROLLING VENGEANCE is heavyweight action, a powerful story of twisted emotion and mangled metal, the telling of which costs the lives of no less than 65 vehicles. Steven Hilliard Stern (THE PARK IS MINE) directed this action-packed revenge yarn with a screenplay by Michael Thomas Montgomery (EYE OF THE TIGER) and co-starring Lawrence Dane (SCANNERS).

Vault Master's Pick of the Week!
Greetings Vault Dwellers! We're just two weeks away from HALLOWEEN, can you believe it?! Yet oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be a major increase in new Horror titles on DVD & Blu-ray.

Wes Craven's SUMMER OF FEAR comes to Blu-ray courtesy of Doppelganger Releasing, and Mill Creek Entertainment releases MARY REILLY (a Jekyll & Hyde tale) to Blu-ray disc.

But it is Kino Classics that wins the week by giving ROLLING VENGEANCE its Blu-ray & DVD debut, plus they have just unleashed a great Special Edition of RAWHEAD REX! The disc boasts a new 4K remastered transfer made from the original negative, a new audio commentary, and a wealth ofcast & crew interviews!

As for the remainder of this week's releases, there are a slew of DVD & Blu-ray boxed sets, with several focusing entirely on DC's superheroes. (Not too shocking since JUSTICE LEAGUE is less than a month away from a theatrical release!) Also, many of Studio Ghibli's feature-length animated films are being re-released to DVD & Blu-ray, which might be of interest to some of you anime fans! To see the full list, start scrolling down!

This Halloween, upgrade your copies of DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004) and LAND OF THE DEAD!

SCREAM FACTORY GOES ALL OUT WITH THEIR UPCOMING COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS OF "DAWN OF THE DEAD" AND LAND OF THE DEAD!

I've always been a big fan of George A. Romero's LIVING DEAD films, so I'm pretty excited for these two releases! DAWN OF THE DEAD was an unexpected hit, and far better than anyone expected. (I give most of that credit to James Gunn!) LAND OF THE DEAD, while a far cry from the entries that came before it, is still a fun and engaging zombie flick with Romero's brand of societal commentary. I look forward to double-dipping on these two titles!

DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004)

The world is in danger when a mysterious virus turns people into mindless, flesh-eating zombies. In a mall in the heartland, a handful of survivors wage a desperate, last-stand battle to stay alive and maintain their humanity!

LAND OF THE DEAD (2005)

Synopsis: Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero returns to unleash another chapter in his zombie series! In this new tale of terror, Romero creates a harrowing vision of a modern-day world where the walking dead roam a vast uninhabited wasteland and the living try to lead "normal" lives behind the high walls of a fortified city. A new society has been built by a hand of ruthless opportunists, who live in luxury in the towers of a skyscraper, high above the less fortunate citizens who must eke out a hard life on the streets below.

With the survival of the city at stake, a group of mercenaries is called into action to protect the living from the evolving army of the dead waiting outside the city walls. LAND OF THE DEAD features a cast of great actors including Dennis Hopper (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2), Simon Baker, Asia Argento, Robert Joy and John Leguizamo.

JUST IN TIME FOR THE HALLOWEEN SEASON, ENJOY A TRIO OF NEW SCREAM FACTORY TITLES ON
BLU-RAY!

Once again, Scream Factory manages to find more genre films that I've never seen before! Are you as excited as I am? If so, scroll down to learn more about these three new releases!

AFTER MIDNIGHT (1989)

According to Professor Edward Derek, the only way to truly understand the psychology of fear is to be afraid ... very afraid! So he invites his class home for a night of three spine-chilling stories: First, a married couple lose their heads in a haunted house; next ravenous guard dogs prowl for cute coeds; and finally a psychopathic killer stalks a terrified telephone operator. But as the frightened freshmen get a hands-on lesson in real fear, the extracurricular creep-fest enters a class of its own, with a fiery final test that could scare the students to death!

Diehard metal-head and struggling artist Jesse (Ethan Embry, CHEAP THRILLS) moves with his wife (Shiri Appleby, UNREAL) and daughter (Kiara Glasco) to a rural Texas town, unaware that the house they got for an unbelievable deal comes with a grisly history. Their dream home turns into a nightmare as disturbing demonic occurrences culminate with the appearance of Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince, Identity), the home’s former resident – who’s destined to do the devil’s bidding.

FANTASTIC PLANET (1973)

Synopsis: Rene Laloux's mesmerising sci-fi animated feature won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and is a landmark of European animation. Set in a distant world, the FANTASTIC PLANET, where tiny humans, or Oms, are kept as pets by large alien creatures, the Draags, the film travels through a strange and beautiful world. Soon, one Om absconds with a Draag knowledge device, using the tool to foment a wild Om uprising against his captors.

Inspired by the Russsian invasion of Czechoslovakia in the late '60s, Laloux's breathtaking vision immediately drew comparisons to Swift's Gulliver's Travels and PLANET OF THE APES. Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki (PRINCESS MONONOKE, SPIRITED AWAY) due to its political and social concerns, epic imagination and groundbreaking animation techniques.

Disfigured and cloaked, they feel sorry for him until they discover his extreme religious motives and anti abortion message.

Diane orders him to leave unaware he is her son. Twenty years ago she had an abortion and on that day a religious zealot bombed the clinic. Her still-living fetus was taken and raised by the bomber. After being rejected by his mother once again when all he wanted was love, he seeks vengeance and kills the family who cast him out.

From award-winning director, Craig Anderson, comes his feature debut. Starring notable actor and scream queen Dee Wallace, RED CHRISTMAS is a character-driven horror, which tackles the abortion debate from multiple angles.

STEPHEN KING'S CAT'S EYE (1985)

Synopsis: A wandering supernatural feline's adventures provide the linking story for STEPHEN KING'S CAT'S EYE, a dead on trilogy scripted by King and directed by Lewis Teague (CUJO).

The staff at Quitters Incorporated promises to help nicotine fiend Dick Morrison (James Woods) kick the habit. If not, someone in Morrison's household might get smoked... because QI is run by a very persuasive mob family.

Next, a luckless gambler (Robert Hayes) is forced into a bet involving a stroll around a building - on the five-inch ledge encircling the 30th floor. Finally, our wayfarer kitty rescues a schoolgirl (young Drew Barrymore) from a vile, doll-sized troll.

The most complete version of 1925's THE LOST WORLD is now available on Blu-ray!

REDISCOVERED FOOTAGE AND AN ALL-NEW 2K TRANSFER MAKE THIS BLU-RAY THE DEFINITIVE RELEASE OF THE LOST WORLD!

Out of the handful of silent films I've sen, THE LOST WORLD is easily my favorite. It is arguably one of the most important movies in cinematic history, and for the longest time has only been available in bargain-priced public domain DVD releases that contained the abridged 63-minute cut of the film.

Then in 2012, Image Entertainment released a 93-minute "restored version" of THE LOST WORLD. Though the quality of the transfer left a little to be desired, it was amazing to see a half-hour of never before seen footage! And now, we have a whopping 110 minutes of THE LOST WORLD to gawk at, thanks to Blackhawk Films, Lobster Films, and Flicker Alley!

Synopsis: True to its title, the 1925, 10-reel version of The Lost World effectively disappeared from circulation in 1929 all known positive prints destroyed a move by First National Pictures to help clear the way for another creature film utilizing special effects and Willis O Brien's cutting-edge animation techniques: KING KONG! For more than 80 years, only abridged editions of THE LOST WORLD remained in existence... until now!

Follow Professor Challenger, played by the inimitable Wallace Beery, as he and a crew of curious explorers embark on an expedition in search of a mythical, prehistoric plateau in South America. Along for the adventure are eminent scientist Summerlee (Arthur Hoyt, the director s brother), sportsman Sir John Roxton (Lewis Stone), journalist Ed Malone (Lloyd Hughes) and Paula White (Bessie Love), whose father disappeared on the same plateau. The party is not there long before the lost world of the jungle begins to reveal its secrets: a primitive ape-man, a Pterodactyl flying through the air, a massive Brontosaurus feeding upon the trees, the vicious Allosaurus, and many more monstrous beasts of the Jurassic age.

Flicker Alley, Lobster Films, and Blackhawk Films are thrilled to present the world-premiere Blu-ray edition of Arthur Conan Doyle's THE LOST WORLD, the most complete version of the film ever released! This visually stunning 2K restoration, accomplished by Lobster Films, features newly-discovered scenes and special effect sequences, incorporating almost all original elements from archives and collections around the world. Renowned silent film composer Robert Israel contributes a new and ambitious score, performed by a full orchestra in 2016!

Disc Specs:
Not Rated | Color (tinted) | 110 minutes | Region Free
Video - 1080p Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Audio - LPCM 2.0 (Orchestrated music only.)

Extras:
  • Audio Commentary: Feature-length audio essay by Nicolas Ciccone, amateur filmmaker and film historian.
  • Deleted Scenes: Restored outtakes from a 1925 original nitrate transfer of THE LOST WORLD.
  • R.F.D., 10,000 B.C. (1917): Short film directed by Willis O'Brien for producer Thomas Edison.
  • The Ghost of Slumber Mountain (1918): Short film written and directed by Willis O'Brien in a new 2K restoration by the Dinosaur Museum.
  • Creation (1930): Unfinished film directed by Willis O'Brien that nonetheless convinced Merian C. Cooper to hire O'Brien for KING KONG.
  • Image Gallery: Featuring original production, exhibition, and promotional materials.
  • Booklet Essay: "The Lost World: Secrets of the Restoration" by Serge Bromberg of Lobster Films.
The reviews are in and this restoration of THE LOST WORLD is a definite must-have! It boasts the longest, and most complete cut of the film, a beautiful new transfer, a newly orchestrated soundtrack, and a fantastic array of extras! You can order it now from AMAZON or BULLMOOSE! The price is a bit steep, but in this case, the pricetag seems warranted!
